News: Pedro will Miss Start on Saturday
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 23, 2008 10:18 pm

Following tonight’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Pedro Martinez’s father died – and so Martinez left during the game to fly home and be with his family.

As such, Martinez will not make his scheduled start on Saturday.

Carlos Muniz last pitched on June 19, and so he could probably make the spot start, but my guess is that the team will instead recall some one from Triple-A to fill in

i thought he was supposed to start on Friday? that’s what MLB.com says.

    • Nate W. says:

Pelfrey can make the start on Friday. For some reason the Mets were slotting Pedro in ahead of Pelfrey, probably because Pelf pitches better on an extra day of rest.

my guess is that Pelf will start on Friday, and Rugy Lugo or Willie Collazo will start on Sat… yikes. This is because they have an off day 5 days after Sat, meaning they can skip Pedro’s fill in the next time around.

Claudio Vargas just pitched yesterday, and Nelson Figueroa pitches the day before that, so count them both out. Not very smart of the Mets to have the two of them pitching back to back after the AAA all star break which was 4 days long…

Brandon Knight has been hot lately, but isnt on the 40 man roster, and is headed to the Olympics soon anyway…

  2. shannon says:

    RIP!!!!

  3. iluvbuckner says:

    So sad…my condolences.

Condolences to Pedro and his family.

    • chicagometfan says:

He will be gone both saturday and sunday so it doesn’t matter when he was supposed to pich. He last threw on July 12Th so they can put him on the 15 day DL and activate him for his next start and call up Niese or someone from AAA.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

I believe you can put a player on bereavement leave and call up a pitcher too. should use whichever one gives Pedro the most time back home.

        • chicagometfan says:

That’s why I said DL because it gives you the most time but you are correct in that we could also use the bereavment method

  5. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Just heard this on SNY.
Thoughts and prayers to Pedro (a true gentleman and one of the classiest in the game) and his family.
Must have been so hard not to have been there back home. I feel for him. Many of us have been there…..

  6. NickA33 says:

God Bless Pedro and his family in this time of need. As much as we all love the sport of baseball, it’s times like this that we realize there is more the life (I don’t like it but it’s true!).

Godspeed Pedro, we’ll pick up a few wins for ya while you’re gone…

  7. Arsenal13 says:

The game always takes a back seat to news like this…good luck to him and his family

  8. Church4prez says:

God Bless his Soul. Thoughts and prayers with the Martinez family

    May he rest in peace.

our thoughts, prayers, and condolences to pedro martinez and his family. there is no bigger thing in someone’s life then their family, not even baseball.

  12. mrmustseetv says:

My condolences to Pedro and his family on their loss.

As for who should start? Mr. Niese. Paging Mr. Niese.

    • Nate W. says:

Niese is scheduled to pitch today in one game of the double header Bingy will be playing starting at noon. Keep an eye on the AA box scores to see if he pitches or is pulled.

  13. bigvito22 says:

RIP, my condolences go out to the Martinez family, God bless.

  14. mookie says:

Take as much time as you need pedro. The mets will pick you up, and our thoughts are with you and your family.

  15. chicagometfan says:

The choices for call up as I know them are

    Armas On DL

Vargas and Figgy both just pitched not enough rest

AAA Knight and Lugo both have enough rest and previous MLB experience

AA Niese and Sal Aquilar both have enough rest.

I would not be quite sure what to do if it were my call.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I’ll be at the game Saturday night. First game I’ve been able to get to Shea in 21 years.
I figured 2 weeks ago I was going to see a replacement pitcher b/c of Pedro’s injury but now it’s official.
Have my fingers crossed they bring up someone who can get it done…..

    • The Slider says:

I know nothing about Knight and Lugo. I don’t think the Mets will call up Neise, do you?

  16. jbinva says:

I’m thinking they give Knight a shot. Career minor leaguer, but has been sick at AAA this year.

    • Nate W. says:

Is Knight still available? He was set to join team USA for the olympics sometime soon…

      • KFS says:

He is available. Of course, if he’s called up, he’ll have to miss the Olympics. The White Sox did that with Clayton Richards when they called him up recently.

  17. Necciai27 says:

RIP. My prayers are with the Martinez family tonight.

“Carlos Muniz last pitched on June 19, and so he could probably make the spot start, but my guess is that the team will instead recall some one from Triple-A to fill in…”

Which is a good idea, because Carlos Muniz has never started a professional baseball game…

Lugo and Knight are both kinda iffy. Lugo was converted into a starter just this year and has been even more Jekyll and Hyde than Oliver Perez. Knight has been a really nice comeback story and has actually been pretty dominant, but he’s been used as a spot starter and long reliever. Another name is Brian Stokes. Again, he’s been pretty Jekyll and Hyde, but not so much as Lugo and has a bit more of a track record than Knight. To tell you the truth, none of these three guys are particularly appealing as starters…

    • chicagometfan says:

Stokes threw 8 innings of one run ball on Monday 7/21 so he is possible.

Agreed that none of the choices is all that great

  18. BeatWritersSuck says:

Wow…nice post Matt….All we care about is who will pitch…Someones Parent passed away…not even a condolences message for Pedro and his Family…Baseball is just a game goes to show how people are

    • MetsFaninCA says:

      Agreed!

    • dave27 says:

Relax – he runs a blog….the readers are handling the condolences just fine.

      • letz_go_metz says:

Our thoughts prayers and sympathies are with Pedro tonight. There are few milestones in life that compare to the loss of a parent. Times like this, baseball is just background noise.

        Hang in there Petey!

    • The Slider says:

Oh stop it! Everyone feels bad for Pedro that his dad passed. The thread is also about who will replace him in the starting rotation. It’ s not like his dad was suddenly taken from Pedro at an early age. He was elderly (yes?) and in bad health. I just hope he didn’t suffer.

But to take an indignant and “holier than thou” approach is out of line. You have no right to take that position with anybody here.

Besides, I think this already showed its warm sympathy for Pedro and his loss. We don’t have to go on ad nauseum about it. Geez, George Carlin would have a field day with you.

  19. Koko says:

    Condolences Pedro and family!

It must have happened during the game, as they showed Pedro sitting in the dugout. .

  20. 4eyeJoe says:

my heart goes out to the Martinez family. so what are the chances of Omar deciding to bring Niese or Parnell up to make the start. i think it would be a great idea to make one of these young arms get a taste of the majors cause we will need one of them to be in the 2009 mets rotation.

  21. chew13 says:

Hey Petey, I don’t know if you visit the site or read the comments. .. But I wanted to let you know that I feel for your loss. Matt, you have SNY connects. See if you can, try to get our notes to Pedro. Thanks.

  22. dave27 says:

For what it’s worth Lugo and Bostick are on the 40-man roster…Vargas, Figueroa, Knight, Niese, etc. are not.

I think you can forget them messing with Niese’s roster status for a spot start. I’d like to see Vargas, but having to DFA him so close to the trade deadline virtually assures he will be snapped up.

No clue what he’s done recently, but Bostick would seem the darkhorse. Lugo is pitching out of the pen no?

In any case, ditto all condolences to Pedro.

    • M3TS4L1F3 says:

No Lugo is a starter and so is Willie Collazo who is another option.

    • nyr2k2 says:

Bostick is done for the season.

    • Nate W. says:

Bostick had season ending knee surgery on 5/28/08

Collazo has only one start in July, having moved to the bullpen at the start of the month.

I would see 4-5 innings from him, and 2-3 from Muniz to get through the 7th. That would be good enough I guess.

  23. ucmetsfan says:

dam and they were talking during game about how he has permission to leave team whenever he wants too. this sucks. RIP! My prayers and thoughts are with Pedro and his family. I put on my Pedro shirt the second I read this and will wear it tomorrow ha. Pedro has always been one of my favorite players so this hurts as I am sad about this.
Anyways, let a proven guy go I dont want to see Neise get call. I would rather see someone like Knight or Lugo get the start. Meanwhile there are positives to Neise starting as he could be in our rotation next year so why not see what we got now rather than later.

  24. M3TS4L1F3 says:

knight is playing for the olympic team and i think Bostick is injured…. Aguilar is 26, Niese start got rained out and they could try and “showcase” him….

    • KFS says:

Showcase? While we’re at it, why don’t we also showcase Holt? What is there to show this kid can go 5 innings without giving up half a dozen runs?

It’s one thing with a batter where he only gets 3 or 4 ABs but with a starter, you’re talking pretty much the game.

  25. Mookie1986 says:

That’s a tough one. I still have both my parents, and while I know they too will one day pass away, I don’t know how I will manage without either of them. I really don’t even want to think about it.

What makes it worse is that his family lives so far away. That’s gonna be one long flight back home.

  26. My best to the Martinez finally…Petey our hearts go out to you

I say go with Niese. He has options so we don’t have to DFA another guy and worry about the waiver wires and why not give your best prospect (pitching wise) a shot. Don’t go to the barrel, give yourself the best shot to win…We are in a pennant race..these all count now (I know th others did too..just more so now)

  27. bkfitz says:

My condolences to Pedro and his family.

  28. KHERUB VON KHERUB says:

  29. sincekindergarten says:

Pedro, your father’s in a place where there is no more suffering, no more tears, no more disease. My condolences and prayers go out to you and your family.

  30. patrick says:

This has been weighing on Pedro for a long long time.

  31. stickguy says:

Very sad for Pedro. But in a way, it will take a bureen off the family (and his mind of course). When you have a parent with this tyupe of terminal illness, it messes with everyones lives (hence the whole is Pedro in or out discussions from earlier in the year).

Give Pedro whatever time he needs to take care of the family. At least he won’t try to rush back from his current injury.

For the Mets, maybe Aquilar? Isn’t he the guy that had a great stretch this yer after converting from a reliever?

Whoever it is, better expect them to make more than 1 start. I don’t expect Neise or parnell now, but who knows. A AAA guy s/t makes more sense. There is pelnty of room on the 40 man roster, but I have no idea which of the retreads has options.

Actually, this would have been a nice time to have a long man/spot starter in the pen like Vargas. Or, of course, Duque!

    • Nate W. says:

as the Mets have off days on July 31st and August 4th I dont think they will need Pedro or a replacement again until August 9th-ish.

They do play 23 consecutive days after Aug 4th, so they may want to get some extra rest of the starters somewhere. I dont like the idea of this rotation pitching a 5-6 weeks all on four days rest. They arent used to it due to the babying.

    • Nate W. says:

Salvador Aguilar was a AA all star this year and could be a nice choice. He is repeating AA this year and was demoted to the pen to start the year, but has been a starter most of his career.

He would be an unlikely choice, but he is rested and is just as likely as any other choice to give a respectable start.

  32. nyr2k2 says:

Carlos Muniz is the spot starter? Cerrone, you realize he has NEVER started a game in his entire professional career?

  33. Dirtysanchez says:

    my condolences petey.

  34. CaseStreet says:

Pedro, lo siento mucho. Estamos rezando por ti y tu familia.

  35. HoJoWright says:

be strong Pedro. and when you get back pitch even stronger now that your dad is watching over you.

Can Nelson Figuera be called up for a start? I liked watching him work
