News: F’Mart Leaves with Leg Cramp

by Matthew Cerrone on July 24th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Mets Double-A OF Fernando Martinez left today’s game in Binghamton with a cramp in his hamstring.

…ugh…this will be martinez’s third leg injury of the season…

…i’m thinking the Mets should get him to the same magic healing center where they sent Jose Reyes a few seasons agoand quick

According to a spokesman in Binghamton, Martinez is day-to-day.

News: Pagan to have Surgery

by Matthew Cerrone on July 24th, 2008 at 10:33 pm

The Mets have announced that Angel Pagan will have surgery next week to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

and so, from what i understand, pagan will miss the rest of the season…he had sought a second opinion, after getting the same diagnosis earlier in the month, but apparently both examines were the same…ugh

In 31 games for the Mets, Pagan hit .275 with 13 RBI and eight extra base his while playing all three outfield positions.

News: Knight will Start on Saturday

by Matthew Cerrone on July 24th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

The Mets have announced that 32–year-old, Triple-A RHP Brandon Knight will start on Saturday in place of Pedro Martinez, who has left the team to be with his family.

Since joining the Zephyrs, Knight is 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA in 11 appearances, during which he has struck out 49 batters and walked 10 in 39 innings.

Earlier today at Mets Minor League Blog, Toby Hyde explained why Knight should be chosen, despite having the opportunity to pitch from the Olympic team this summer.

Martinez will likely rejoin the Mets next week, though Jerry Manuel told reporters that the team must be ‘cognizant of the healing process.

Buzz: Mets, Reds and Huston Street

by Matthew Cerrone on July 24th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Yesterday in the San Francisco Chronicle, Susan Slusser wrote that the Reds and Mets have expressed interest in trading for A’s RHP Huston Street.

…from what i can gather, A’s GM Billy Beane, who is a master at trade market economics, is tempting teams with street, because so many teams are interested in relief pitching, and, while there are lots of pitchers available to be had, they are all mediocre at best…

…so, beane can dangle street and ask for the moon in return, and be justified in doing so…

…the thing is, in this market, and with the sporadic nature of relievers, i suspect you’ll see a team be more inclined to part with less and get less in return, then trade a top pitching prospect for street…unless, of course, your team is just one player away, and that player is a closer, in which case street could be worth it

postGame: Mets 3 Phillies 1

by Matthew Cerrone on July 24th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

The Mets (55–47) defeated the Phillies (54–48) by the score of 3 to 1 in Shea Stadium today.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from today’s game, go to SNY.tv.

With 60 games left in the season, the Mets are once again in sole possession of first place.

  • With the game tied in the bottom of the eighth inning, Robinson Cancel reached first base on a single.  He advanced to second on a sac-bunt.  Endy Chavez lined out on a quick rip to the pitcher.  However, in what is a moment that will likely be overlooked, Cancel wisely took pause, and was able to get back to second instead of being doubled up.  The inning continued.  David Wright was intentionally walked, and Carlos Delgado than ripped a double in to the left-field corner to drive in two runs.  A) The heads-up base running by Cancel should not be understated, and 2) the hit by Delgado cannot be overstated.  It was HUGE.
  • When Wright crossed home, he let out one of the biggest fist pumps I have ever seen, while yelling, “Yeah,” with his eyes shut.  Outstanding.
  • Oliver Perez pitched 7.2 innings and allowed just one run and six hits, while walking one and striking out 12.  He let the bases become loaded in the eighth, and now owes Aaron Heilman a beer, or a glass of wine, for getting a pop out to end the inning.
  • Speaking of Perez, is there anything more entertaining than watching him swing a baseball bat?  Hilarious.  He is the human corkscrew.
  • Once again, Billy Wagner returned for a save.  By the way, he has not allowed a run in seven straight innings.
  • It make me feel extra special knowing Jimmy Rollins made the final out in today’s game.
  • I owe Delgado an apology.  I think a lot of us do, actually.  There is a lot of season left, but, wow.

The Mets are 9–4 against the Phillies this season.

…i am so impressed with the way this team fought back from Tuesday night’s lossnice job, men

The first-place Mets start a three-game series with the Cardinals tomorrow at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm, with Mike Boggs (3-1, 6.59 ERA) taking on Mike Pelfrey (8-6, 3.81 ERA).

Blog: Toby on Wilmer Flores and Brandon Knight

by Matthew Cerrone on July 24th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

As he continues his tour of the Mets minor league system, for Mets Minor League Blog, Toby Hyde writes today about Mets 16–year-old OF Wilmer Flores.

Also, Hyde explains why the Mets should pull Triple-A RHP Brandon Knight from the Olympic team and, instead, start him on Saturday in place of Pedro Martinez, who is scheduled to miss the start while with his family.

In five starts since joining the Triple-A Zephyrs, the 32-year-old Knight is 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA.
