The Mets have announced that 32–year-old, Triple-A RHP Brandon Knight will start on Saturday in
place of Pedro Martinez, who has left the team to be with his family.
Since joining the Zephyrs, Knight is 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA in 11 appearances, during which he has struck out 49 batters and walked 10 in 39 innings.
Earlier today at Mets Minor League Blog, Toby Hyde explained why Knight should be chosen, despite having the opportunity to pitch from the Olympic team this summer.
Martinez will likely rejoin the Mets next week, though Jerry Manuel told reporters that the team must be ‘cognizant of the healing process.

guy looks good
FMart leaves the game early with another hammy injury today. Can we get this kid on the Reyes improvement program pronto?
Meanwhile, looking at the Cyclones web site first round sandwich pick Brad Holt struck out 14 in 6 innings tonight. Are you kidding me?
Let the guy pitch in the Olympics. It’s not like he’ll get a spot in the Mets rotation long-term. I think bringing him up would be a selfish move.
I would bet that they cleared it with him first, then again maybe Muniz isnt gonna stick around.
I’d bet they asked him first, but who knows. Guy’s been around forever and this would be his first (and possibly only) opportunity to start a major league baseball game. I’d find it hard to believe he wouldn’t jump at the opportunity. Obviously, the olympics are a huge deal as well — but given how long he’s been around and how he’s never started a big league ballgame, I’d be shocked if he would prefer the olympics.
There is also the fact that Oberkfell obviously has alot of experience with the guy and if he plays well who knows what the future will hold. Not to mention hasnt there been a bunch of talk about another arm in the pen?
I agree with your assessment DSB, I’ve never heard a tee ball, little league, high school, american legion, college or minor league baseball player state that his dream is to play in the Olympics (but if it is more power to him!), it’s always to play in the major leagues.
Screw the Olympics. We’re going to the World Series and Brandon Knight (IF he plays his cards right) might just be asked to come along with us.
There, I said it. I said it. Take THAT Rollins.
Sorry, Rollins isn’t here yet, but as soon as he gets here we’ll let him know what you said.
lmao
Are you stupid? He works for the Mets! How would it be selfish to want him to pitch for them? They are his freakin employer!
I don’t get what it is with people that makes some of them so stupid. The Mets would be selfish to ask a man, that is on their payroll, that they give a salary too, to do his job for them. Wow.
I agree.
Starting him for one fill-in game, taking away his olympic eligibility and knowing he has no future with the team doesn’t seem right to me.
I know the team can do whatever they want and they owe the olympic team nothing, but I’d look for another option.
Holt WOW 51 k’s in 34 IP’s with a 1.57 era
yep, and he’s had 10+ Ks in two of those starts. If he keeps it up, I wonder if he can get to AA before the season is over.
Read the NY Observer article linked to Toby’s Minor League web site (which is a really excellant site by the way. Matt should link there more often). While Holt has been compared to Pelfrey in many ways, Holt apparently is already progressing faster, learning a decent fading change-up within his first month and now working on a slider as another secondary pitch. When scouted he was a “one pitch pitcher” but to dominate a league like this, even the Penn League is impressive. It looks early like Reese Havens is going to be a great pick-up once his health rights itself. Ike Davis on the other hand looks like he’s gong to need time and more time.
But I think Holt is going to be a steal and Reese is going to at least a solid player who can contribute very soon. And from what I read scouts think Holt can get more velocity on his fastball by improving his mechanics.
As for Davis, eh you can’t win em all. His obp is like 40 points lower than his average, I didn’t even realize that was possible. But it is a small sample size so there’s still time.
I was really happy when they drafted Holt. These stats are sick, I love it. It’d be nice to add another power arm to Pelf in a few years.
Most people killed Omar within 5 minutes of drafting Holt. Some even said things like… “Oh Great, this guy looks like another Pelfrey… just what we need… way to go OMar”
That sort of stuff was everywhere. Holt looks very good so far, with great stuff. Just because ESPN 2 cast was too lazy to get a bio on him we all assumed he stunk. I have actually seen him pitch live before in college and was impressed, but still surprised when we drafted him. I will say this, I sure as hell hope he is another Pelfrey.
whats he thorwing down their now? 94 95???
To Gina.
It’s NOT possible to have a lower OBP then average. So you thought right.
ImissPiazza, yes it is possible to have a lower obp than average. The formula for batting average is:
Hits/(Plate Appearances – Walks – Sacrifice)
The Formula for OBP is:
Hits + Walks/(Plate Appearances).
Therefore, it is possible to have a lower OBP than average if you do not have few to no walks, and a decent number of sacrifices, with don’t count against BA, but do count against OBP.
There are a few players who finished a season with such a scenario, but I can’t recall their names.
Yeah I looked again at Davis’s stats I was looking at the wrong thing the first time. But he does only have 1 walk in like 111 plate appearances.
hbp counts in obp, too. it’s eckstein’s bread and butter!
Gina, I didnt care for the Ike Davis drafting either, but a little soon to label him a bust, no? I do like Havens and Holt a lot, but it is not true that Holt just learned a slider and changeup within the last 2 months. They may be developing quicker then they thought, but he always had them, they just were not great pitches and were not consistent, but he always had them in his repetoire. I am excited. I am a bit surprised that there has not been much noise in the LAtin American Market though, that is usually Omar;s bread and butter for building a system.
Well, I’m already developing a mancrush on Wilmer Flores. To have an OPS over 1.000, even as a 16 year-old, even at Kingsport is impressive. The fact is, the top International guy this year was that pitcher Beane paid like $4M for but Omar always seems to find a few young ‘uns that have potential in this market.
Flores was signed last year. He’s right there’s been zero news about who we’ve signed this year, it’s a little odd.
I’ll be at this game Sat. night. This is the first opportunity I’ve had to get to Shea in 21 years so I’m hoping Knight does something special and we pull out a win.
If I’m Knight, screw the Olympics. Isn’t the minimum salary over $100,000 in the MLB now? If he is up for two weeks, he’ll make probably half of his AAA salary. Not only that, he’ll get some more MLB exposure. The Olympics are a crock anyway. The world is very anti-USA right now, which is evident in that they want to eliminate baseball for the 2012 games. We should boycott these games anyway, I know I will.
