postGame: Mets 7 Cardinals 2

by Matthew Cerrone on July 25th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

The Mets (56–47) defeated the Cardinals (57–48) by the score of 7 to 2 in Shea Stadium tonight.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

  • I don’t have a lot of experience watching a home-grown pitcher develop and go from being a thrower into a smart, major-league pitcher.  That said, it has been an absolute pleasure watching Mike Pelfrey make such an evolution.  What’s most impressive is how he is commanding the inning and limiting damage with an understanding of his talent and the inning at hand.  Here’s an example, he let up seven hits in seven innings, but just one run.  That’s not an accident and it’s a beautiful thing.
  • David Wright hit a hanger in to the left-field corner for the game’s first run.  Jose Reyes hit a two-run triple that was worthy of the Jose-Jose-Jose chant that followed.
  • Carlos Delgado, who hit another two-run homer, is making me question my ability to access talent.  To say he’s on fire would be an understatement, frankly.
  • Argenis Reyes delivered a two-out, two-RBI single.  He also hit his first first home run of the season.  What’s more, he cleared the pitcher on two occasions.  All of which is impressive.  Less impressive is the blond hair that he is rocking, said Mike Piazza.
  • David Wright made a stellar one-handed pick up on a slow roller up the line for a ground out to end the inning.
  • Pedro Feliciano and Aaron Heilman were able to clean up Duaner Sanchez’s bases-loaded mess in the ninth inning to protect the victory.

By the way, the Phillies lost, meaning they are now tied for second place with the Marlins behind the Mets in the NL East.

The Mets continues their three-game series with the Cardinals tomorrow at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm, with Joel Pineiro (3-4, 4.52 ERA) taking on Brandon Knight, who will be making his first start of the season.

Opinion: Pulled from the Game

by Matthew Cerrone on July 25th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

The best part about tonight’s activity is that it applied the ‘Pulled from a Game Theory,’ and actually worked.

Usually, we all freak out when a player is pulled from a game and assume it suggests a trade, yet it never does.

Tonight it did.  So, there you go.

Buzz: Mets haven’t talked to Padres about Giles

by Matthew Cerrone on July 25th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

In a post to his blog for the New York Post, citing ‘team officials,’ Joel Sherman writes that the Mets have had no talks with the Padres regarding OF Brian Giles.

Earlier today, ESPN’s Buster Olney told MetsBlog that the Padres are open to discussing Giles and there has been contact between the Mets and Padres.

“It’s not yet serious,” Olney said, adding, “and it may well turn out that it never gets serious.”

Instead, according to Sherman, “They continue to look more heavily at Pittsburgh’s Jason Bay, Seattle’s Raul Ibanez and Cleveland’s Casey Blake.”

…you know, i wonder if by watching Xavier Nady go to the Yankees, does it put extra pressure on Omar Minaya, within the New York market, to acquire a player with more substance than, say, blake or ibanez…will such an acquisition seem like not enough…is a guy like bay or Matt Holliday necessary…or, will we be comfortable if he only acquires blake, etc…not only did their crosstown rivals step up ahead of the market and improve, they did so with the very player most Mets fans and minaya wanted…

…i’m interested to see how this all plays out

Sherman also provides information on the overall trade market, why rumors start, and why the Mets are back in first place.

News: Nady, Marte Traded to Yankees

by Mike Nichols on July 25th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

According to FSN Pittsburgh, the Pirates have traded OF Xavier Nady and LHP Damaso Marte pending medical reviews.

However, the receipent of both Nady and Marte are unknown at this time.

Update7:50 pm

According to Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus, the Yankees have acquired Nady and Marte.

…hat tip to MLB Trade Rumors for the link…

…added to by Matthew Cerrone

According to Pete Abraham at his blog for the Journal News, Yankees RHP Phil Coke was pulled mid-way through his start for Triple-A Trenton tonight, suggesting he could be part of the deal for Nady.

...however, coke was not on Baseball America’s Top 10 Yankees Prospects at the start of the season…of course, maybe he is the iffy-prospect, as alluded to by Jayson Stark from ESPN.com…

Update8:07 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Yankees have traded RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Phil Coke, RHP George Kontos and OF Jose Tabata to the Pirates for Nady and Marte.

Update8:33 pm

…added to by Matthew Cerrone

In his report, Rosenthal adds, “The Rays were among the teams pursuing Nady, along with the Mets and Phillies.”

…i can’t even begin to wonder what the Mets may have been able to offer…the thing is, i just can’t think of four prospects, including one who is major-league ready for the mound, who the Mets could even offer, let alone a deal that fits like this…

…also, like i said earlier, from what i could gather, the Rays were being the most aggressive for nady, and who has more minor-league talent then they do…and they didn’t get him…

…sometimes, it’s just a matter of who the Pirates may have wanted…and not necessarily about who you and i think is a better prospect – if that makes any sense…

…earlier today, i heard from a person in Pittsburgh who said that if a team was willing to take on marte’s contract, plus nady, the deal could become more about quantity than quality…

…what tonight’s nady deal tells me is that a) the Rays must be eyeing bay, etc., and b) the Mets may be even unable to put together a quantity deal, let alone quality

Note: Church Cleared, Other Pre-Game Notes

by Matthew Cerrone on July 25th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Prior to tonight’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Ryan Church has been cleared to do light conditioning after which he will play in at least six minor-league rehab games.

which, by my math, suggests he will not be ready to return to the Mets until at least August, i.e., after the Trade Deadline…

Also, Manuel told reporters that while Luis Castillo continues to workout in Port St. Lucie, he will not return until at least the first week of August.

Lastly, Pedro Martinez has been officially put on the Bereavement List, and will be replaced in the rotation on Saturday by Brandon Knight, as noted yesterday evening.

Manuel suggested Knight could stick around in a different role after Martinez rejoins the team.

Recap: Omar Minaya on WFAN

by Matthew Cerrone on July 25th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Earlier today, Mets GM Omar Minaya appeared as a guest on WFAN’s morning show.

To listen to the full 15–minute interview, go to WFAN.com.

Minaya told the show’s host that he has no problem with the way Jose Reyes reacted while running around the bases following a game-breaking home run against the Phillies on Wednesday night, adding:

“It’s no different than what other players do in this day and age.  It’s all within the moment and the game and I am okay with Jose Reyes doing it.  Just like I am okay with other players doing it in the moment.  I do believe it is entertainment and that there is a fine line, but I do believe that emotion and expression are part of today’s players.”

Minaya also told WFAN that he hopes Ryan Church will return to baseball activities soon, after which he will play in a minor-league rehab start before rejoining the Mets.

Minaya also discussed the state of Luis Castillo and Pedro Martinez, whether Church impacts the Trade Deadline, and Johan Santana not pitching the ninth inning in his last start.

Again, to listen to Minaya’s full interview, go to WFAN.com.

Note: Olney to MetsBlog regarding Giles

by Matthew Cerrone on July 25th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

In the previous post, I reference a comment from Buster Olney that he made on his blog for ESPN.com regarding Omar Minaya’s interest in Padres OF Brian Giles.

I did not see Olney on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, where he discussed Giles in more detail, so I asked him for a few specifics.

According to Olney, the Padres are open to discussing Giles and there has been contact between the Mets and Padres.

“It’s not yet serious,” he said, adding, “and it may well turn out that it never gets serious.”

as i said in the earlier post, there are eight teams who giles can reject a trade to…from what i understood, most of the teams are on the east coast…logic would suggest the Mets are included, but if the Padres and Mets have talked, i’m guessing the Mets are a team he is open to going to…of course, that’s all a guess…only the Padres and giles know for sure
