Buzz: Mets and the Reliver Market
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 25, 2008 12:14 pm

According to in-the-know Dan Graziano, from the Star-Ledger, the Mets have expressed interest in Jays LHP Brian Tallet, Giants LHP Jack Taschner, and Arthur Rhodes.

In 36 appearances for the Blue Jays this season, the 30–year-old Tallet is 0–1 with 3.11 ERA, while striking out 34 batters in 37 innings pitched.  He had an ERA below 4.00 to end each of the last two seasons.

Left-handed hitters are batting .273 against Taschner, while righties are batting .215.

Meanwhile, Taschner, 30, is 2–1 with a 3.18 ERA in 47 relief appearances for the Giants.  He is having his best season since making it to be the big leagues in 2005.

Left-handed hitters are batting .188 against Taschner.

Lastly, the 39–year-old Rhodes, who did not play in the major leagues in 2007, has struck out 24 batters in 19 innings, while posting a 2.75 ERA, in 33 appearances for the M’s this season, during which opponents are hitting .229 against him.

Left-handed hitters are batting .194 against Rhodes.

frankly, i’m not surprised the Omar Minaya is interested in rhodes…he’s a veteran, he’s been through several pennant races and he made the Mets look silly during interleague play

…that said, there are so many mid-level relief pitchers on the market, if the Mets want one, it should not be a problem making a move and he will not cost a whole lot either…

…for what it’s worth, from what i can gather, the O’s are asking for a high-impact, immediate-impact prospect in exchange for George Sherrill, and so the Mets, like most teams, are no longer interested…

…also speaking of relievers, cross Huston Street from your list of potential acquisitions…i just don’t see the Mets giving up such a bounty when they have more obvious holes and a farm system that cannot fill them all at once…

Graziano also discusses Bronson Arroyo, Roy Halladay, the O’s, and whether Fernando Martinez’s recent injury will impact how the Mets approach acquiring an outfielder.

    No, no, and no.

  2. Dirtysanchez says:

man idk guys to me it doesnt look like omar will/can get anything done here. Im sure hes going to work down till the last second of july 31…but i just dont see anything happening….hope omar can prove me wrong

  3. the Straw says:

I just dont understand what the reasoning behind looking into any of these reliever are. I mean we already have 3 lefties in the pen and a guy like arthur rhodes is not better than any of them. there is no need to add another lefty unless you are removing schoe or feliciano. I think this is just a smoke screen. Omar is smarter than this.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the talk. Every GM does a lot of talking and talking never hurts. Its just that in NY, this talk gets hyped up way more than it should be.
Remember all the talk about getting Manny Ramirez a few years ago that never materialized? Who knows how close that deal came to fruition but it was weeks of speculation for nothing.

  4. mex84 says:

We have like ten leftys in our pen now, is there more LH batters out there then RH? Get a righty power arm to compliment Wags!

  5. dontstopbelieving says:

The biggest need in our pen is a guy who can pitch to both sides. All of our non-closer relievers — lefty and righty — except Sanchez have pronounced splits. I think that’s what makes some of these guys appealing.

    • mex84 says:

True, Tallet seems the most apealing. Tashner is a one batter type and Rhodes is kind of long in the tooth, overwork might creep up on him soon.

    • Gina says:

Heilman’s career splits are pretty even, it’s just this year he’s been struggling against lefties.

      • dontstopbelieving says:

Yeah, I don’t know what to make of that — is this an aberration, or has he changed something about his pitching that makes him vulnerable to righties.

Similarly, in Feliciano’s 2 “good years” (07 and 06) he had splits, but was still capable against righties. Now all of a sudden he can’t get righties out…so do we assume he’ll return to form or do we treat him as a LOOGY…

        • napes22 says:

Honestly, I think that Heilman’s splits are mainly due to his struggles in the first half of the season. He hasn’t faced that many lefties since he started to rebound. His splits will eventually even out.

Good Example: Jhonny Peralta (Right handed)
          .215 vs lefites
          .282 vs righties
His early season struggles were against both lefties and righties. He is hitting really well right now, but since he mainly faces righty pitchers, his lefty numbers haven’t come back up yet.

  6. Bruce Boisclair says:

We will end up getting guy(s) no one had speculated about. It’s the nature of the (trading) game.

  7. Bruce Boisclair says:

Also, all of these LHPs means that the organization may be souring on Pedro Feliciano. I am certainly not as confident in him as I once was, and we have seen the Schoe instead of Feliciano in big spots recently.

    • HoJoWright says:

that’s kinda how I’m reading into it. eventhough we don’t need any of the three guys mentioned, we would if Feliciano or Heilman is included in another deal. we’ll see…

  8. napes22 says:

This might sound dumb, but why do we need a releiver? Or more specifically, why are we looking at a one sided guy. I assume that when Matt mentions lefthand hitters bat .194 off a reliever, that righties kill him.

Joe Smith – Shuts down righties
Aaron Heilman – Shuts down righties, but more recently, everyone
    Feliciano – Shuts down lefties
    Schoeneweiss – Shuts down lefties
Muniz – with the exception of 3 games in early June has been great against both sides (only 16 innings)
Duaner – Remove July 22, June 10th, May 3 explosions, he has an ERA of 1.70 and WHIP of 0.94, with a .153 BAA.
Wagner – Shuts down both, buy with the occasional blown save

    • mex84 says:

Depth never hurts, but i agree. Focus needs to be directed to the outfield, especially a righty bat.

      • starz31 says:

I understand Omar is exploring his options in the trade market, but its like this story is written just to have a story. I don’ know why Omar wants another lefty unless feliciano or Show are gone. Depth never hurts, but yea focus should be spent on the outfield. And not another lefty bat.

        • napes22 says:

The only thing I can think of is that our releivers could be involved in a potential deal, and Omar is looking to replace him. Otherwise, you’re right. It’s a story to have a story.

What we really need is outfield help and another bat off the bench. No reason for us to have 3 catchers and Marlon Anderson as a pinch hitter (.203 BA).

If Church comes back, we still need an OF. It’s fairly obvious now that F-Mart won’t be coming to play at Citi next season. Injuries this year, his age, along with the fact that the logical next step in his progression is another year at AA give me that idea.

        • starz31 says:

or at least see how he plays in AAA

    • metsrbest says:

How do you remove implosions? And three of them as a matter of fact! lol

      • napes22 says:

Well he actually had 4, I just left one in. I wasn’t saying ignore them, but from a statistical prospective, his numbers are quite impressive without his bad nights. Still need to take them into consideration when viewing the player as a whole.

In either case, the only thing I can see us needing in the bullpen is another releiver who can get both side of the plate out.

Otherwise, its a matter of managing our bullpen correctly. Willie/Peterson were never able to do this. Judging by Manuel’s choices this week, he isn’t sure how to do it either. The point I was trying to make above is that our pen really isn’t bad.

  9. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Left-handed hitters are batting .273 against Taschner, while righties are batting .215.

Meanwhile, Taschner, 30, is 2–1 with a 3.18 ERA in 47 relief appearances for the Giants. He is having his best season since making it to be the big leagues in 2005.

Left-handed hitters are batting .188 against Taschner.

Wait… What? The first one’s supposed to be Tallet, correct?

  10. metsrbest says:

G0d no Arthur Rhodes. Saw somewhere that the Mets had interest in Scott Downs from the Blue Jays…he would be worth it.

  11. What the heck happened to Matt Wise? I know he was hurt, but since when is he done for the year? He’s probably not the answer anyway, but then again, I’m not sure what the question is since what we really need is a corner OF.

  12. UpstateDave says:

I also fail to understand why we’d need another lefty reliever. I think if we were to trade for a reliever, what we need is a power arm to bring in when we really need a strikeout, whether lefty or righty. Most of our bullpen, with the exception of Wagner and possibly Heilman, tends to pitch to contact. Street could be that guy, but Beane will ask for way too much.

    • SovereignRonnie says:

Only reason I could think of to acquire another lefty is to beat solely the Phillies. Utley, Howard, Dobbs, Jenkins all are worse against lefties. Similarly, perhaps there is a desire to constantly switch Tex & Chipper to the right side.

Just a thought, I agree that there are better use of our resource and more pressing needs on this team.

  13. zen says:

pretty intetresting if you’re a college fb fan: cubs called up right-hander jeff samardzija

  14. bkfitz says:

    All of those guys suck.

  15. TheIcon says:

Having covered Taschner in the minors, he would be a good addition to the bullpen, though I can’t see the Mets adding another lefty.
