In a post to his blog for the New York Post, citing ‘team officials,’ Joel Sherman writes that the Mets have had no talks with the Padres regarding OF Brian Giles.
Earlier today, ESPN’s Buster Olney told MetsBlog that the Padres are open to discussing Giles and there has been contact between the Mets and Padres.
“It’s not yet serious,” Olney said, adding, “and it may well turn out that it never gets serious.”
Instead, according to Sherman, “They continue to look more heavily at Pittsburgh’s Jason Bay, Seattle’s Raul Ibanez and Cleveland’s Casey Blake.”
…you know, i wonder if by watching Xavier Nady go to the Yankees, does it put extra pressure on Omar Minaya, within the New York market, to acquire a player with more substance than, say, blake or ibanez…will such an acquisition seem like not enough…is a guy like bay or Matt Holliday necessary…or, will we be comfortable if he only acquires blake, etc…not only did their crosstown rivals step up ahead of the market and improve, they did so with the very player most Mets fans and minaya wanted…
…i’m interested to see how this all plays out…
Sherman also provides information on the overall trade market, why rumors start, and why the Mets are back in first place.

This adds to my list of “Stuff Buster Olney makes up”
I agree with Matt, this Mary trade is good… Now that the Pirates got some decent prospects, it could mean Bay’s price will get lower
oops I mean Nady LOL
The Pirates didn’t get a whole lot for Nady and Marte. Besides, if they did why would they take less for Bay? They desperately need to refill their farm system.
Mets are a OF bat away from being BYE BYE in this division. Cmon Omar!!!
I really believe that if Ryan Church comes back they can get away with Tatis, Easley and Endy in the OF. I am more concerned with the Mets getting another arm in their bullpen. I think that Pedro is either not coming back or will be susceptable to going down with an injury. I don’t think you can have enough arms as the season progresses.
Another arm in the bullpen over a COF? Right, and the Yankees need a 3B more then they need a starter. Pedro was scheduled to start, and left because his dad died. So I dont know why you would say he wont pitch again, and even if he didnt, what does that have to do with the pen? Nady is not some outstanding pickup, so I dont get the point by Matt about Omar having to answer with somebody better then Casey Blake (by the way Xavier is Casey Blake, check out the career numbers, and also, what in the world does a team in another division in another league have to do with the moves that we make? Are we trying to compete with the Yankees for the division or the Phillies, somebody remind me.). I also seriously, seriously doubt Minaya was ever serious about Nady. He is not stupid, Nady (although the Yankees gave up just Tabata and fillers) was being overvalued and is not much more valuable then Juan Rivera, Casey Blake, or Austin KEarns. The only difference in those guys is what they could cost in terms of prospects. It drives me crazy how people act as if Nady is some all star. The guy is a fringe 3rd outfielder having a career year. His value will never be hiugher then it is now.
what ever buster onley says is wrong. u need to listen to peter gammons b/c wht ever he says always happens. its weird i think gm’s go by what he says
Rosenthal is the best though.
I wonder how many GMs/Execs purposely feed Olney misinformation because they know he’s going to run with it? I feel the same with Jon Heyman. Meanwhile, I get a sense that guys like Gammons, Rosenthal and Verducci do a little more HW than their peers.
Lol. Gammons is a senile old fool.
bay would look so sweet in our lineup
Hmm… If we acquire Bay, where would he bat in the lineup?
I say bat him 3rd and Wright second or just bat Bay in the 5 hole
What do you guys think?
Buster Olney is wrong about something? To quote the immortal Billy Wagner, F’n shocker.
just completely in shock that a 25 year old 6.67 era middle reliever can get you a .330 hitting all-star outfielder.
pirates office should be fired instantly- they ask for f-mart and turn around and accept 4 complete garbage players?
You just called Xavier Nady an all star. Funny stuff. Are you taking your routine on the road?
O, and Omar should go and get Austin Kearns for minimal offerings.
thats what I thought earlier in the year but to be honest he’s not that could at all
hes a 25 homer guy outside of rfk (he’s hurt all this year so far, can’t look at his stats now)… look at church out of rfk
If we couldn’t get Nady I don’t think we’d be able to get Bay.
But that being said I think I’d be willing to part with F-mart for Bay.
F-Mart is not leaving, you all might as well stop thinking about it. You would just be wasting your brain power.
I would part with F-mart for Bay also.
Brian Giles??
NO MORE LEFT HANDED BATS PLEASE!
Sheesh
please enough about Giles already….
Yeah, really, why would anybody want a veteran .300/.400 guy to bat 2nd in their lineup?
how much are you willing to give up for a 37 year old? this team needs to get younger, not older.
Hey Manny’s acting up in Boston again. Lets start those rumors up again.
Go get’em Omar!!!
I want Carlos Blake!!!!!
