Buzz: Mets haven’t talked to Padres about Giles

by Matthew Cerrone on July 25th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

In a post to his blog for the New York Post, citing ‘team officials,’ Joel Sherman writes that the Mets have had no talks with the Padres regarding OF Brian Giles.

Earlier today, ESPN’s Buster Olney told MetsBlog that the Padres are open to discussing Giles and there has been contact between the Mets and Padres.

“It’s not yet serious,” Olney said, adding, “and it may well turn out that it never gets serious.”

Instead, according to Sherman, “They continue to look more heavily at Pittsburgh’s Jason Bay, Seattle’s Raul Ibanez and Cleveland’s Casey Blake.”

…you know, i wonder if by watching Xavier Nady go to the Yankees, does it put extra pressure on Omar Minaya, within the New York market, to acquire a player with more substance than, say, blake or ibanez…will such an acquisition seem like not enough…is a guy like bay or Matt Holliday necessary…or, will we be comfortable if he only acquires blake, etc…not only did their crosstown rivals step up ahead of the market and improve, they did so with the very player most Mets fans and minaya wanted…

…i’m interested to see how this all plays out

Sherman also provides information on the overall trade market, why rumors start, and why the Mets are back in first place.
