News: Nady, Marte Traded to Yankees

by Mike Nichols

According to FSN Pittsburgh, the Pirates have traded OF Xavier Nady and LHP Damaso Marte pending medical reviews.

However, the receipent of both Nady and Marte are unknown at this time.

Update7:50 pm

According to Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus, the Yankees have acquired Nady and Marte.

…hat tip to MLB Trade Rumors for the link…

…added to by Matthew Cerrone

According to Pete Abraham at his blog for the Journal News, Yankees RHP Phil Coke was pulled mid-way through his start for Triple-A Trenton tonight, suggesting he could be part of the deal for Nady.

...however, coke was not on Baseball America’s Top 10 Yankees Prospects at the start of the season…of course, maybe he is the iffy-prospect, as alluded to by Jayson Stark from ESPN.com…

Update8:07 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Yankees have traded RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Phil Coke, RHP George Kontos and OF Jose Tabata to the Pirates for Nady and Marte.

Update8:33 pm

…added to by Matthew Cerrone

In his report, Rosenthal adds, “The Rays were among the teams pursuing Nady, along with the Mets and Phillies.”

…i can’t even begin to wonder what the Mets may have been able to offer…the thing is, i just can’t think of four prospects, including one who is major-league ready for the mound, who the Mets could even offer, let alone a deal that fits like this…

…also, like i said earlier, from what i could gather, the Rays were being the most aggressive for nady, and who has more minor-league talent then they do…and they didn’t get him…

…sometimes, it’s just a matter of who the Pirates may have wanted…and not necessarily about who you and i think is a better prospect – if that makes any sense…

…earlier today, i heard from a person in Pittsburgh who said that if a team was willing to take on marte’s contract, plus nady, the deal could become more about quantity than quality…

…what tonight’s nady deal tells me is that a) the Rays must be eyeing bay, etc., and b) the Mets may be even unable to put together a quantity deal, let alone quality

WHERE THEY GOING!!!!!!!!

bvaz July 25, 2008 at 7:49 pm

interesting.

KingWright July 25, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Oh for the love of God.

Nightlife July 25, 2008 at 7:50 pm

I certainly hope the Pirates did better than Ian Kennedy, cause that would be pretty pathetic if otherwise.

bvaz July 25, 2008 at 7:51 pm

obviously kennedy is part of the deal. but to get both, I am sure the yanks gave up at least 2 more decent prospects.

Midtown July 25, 2008 at 10:27 pm

wrong, and wrong.

The Pirates front office is painfully stupid for allowing this trade to happen.

mex84 July 25, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Friggin Skanks!

KingWright July 25, 2008 at 7:55 pm

I’m sorry, but it’s gonna suck seeing Nady swing a Yankee bat.

mex84 July 25, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Tell me about it

bvaz July 25, 2008 at 8:02 pm

don’t forget, we got OP for Nady. it is not like there was o return.
plus, I’d rather see players not go to NL teams that the Metas are contending with. The Mets were not going to give up the chips for Nady.

jbinva July 25, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Baseball Prospectus server FAIL!

Arsenal13 July 25, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Hopefully it is melky thrown in there

Ceetar July 25, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Probably, but I hope not cause he sucks.

I hope they traded Cano and Joba personally.

MetsFan1989 July 25, 2008 at 7:59 pm

i dont think it is yanks. i think it is the rays.

MetsFan1989 July 25, 2008 at 8:00 pm

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo

Mo Vaughns Nutritionist July 25, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Oh, they traded Phil Coke? Wow that must have taken some guts to do.

KingWright July 25, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Did the Mets not have a Phil Coke?

Church4prez July 25, 2008 at 8:07 pm

this makes me sick

huge_mets_fan11 July 25, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Sounds like their top prospect Austin Jackson is involved.

ou812jay8 July 25, 2008 at 8:09 pm

If not Jackson, then Tabata.

huge_mets_fan11 July 25, 2008 at 8:11 pm

Yup its Tabata, my bad

ou812jay8 July 25, 2008 at 8:08 pm

heard ross ohlendorf was part of the package.

jbinva July 25, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Thus ends the MetsBlog love affair with Xavier Nady.

Sorry, X, we officially hate you now.

Gina July 25, 2008 at 8:11 pm

To much IMO.

Gina July 25, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Actually nevermind, for some reason I thought I read Austin Horn’s name.

Still I’m pissed because I picked up Marte as a closer in fantasy, now I gotta go find someone else.

SovereignRonnie July 25, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Gina, I suggest NOT Duaner Sanchez.

gipper82475 July 25, 2008 at 8:11 pm

Eh, Nady sucks in the 2nd half!

Ceetar July 25, 2008 at 8:14 pm

more concerned about the pitcher. Although Nady is much better than Melky..wonder if they’re putting Damon back in center?

Church4prez July 25, 2008 at 8:13 pm

this sucks. the skanks gave up nothing!!!!! FIRE OMAR!!!!

Gina July 25, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Tabata was their 3rd ranked prospect, according to baseball america, going into the season, and I remember reading that with his performance this season some scouts have him ahead of Jackson.

mex84 July 25, 2008 at 8:17 pm

They are prospects, two of them are pitching well in AA. If they pan out its a good deal for the constantly building Pirates.

AngryFan July 25, 2008 at 8:15 pm

What happened to Pittspukes’ “Two immediate impact prospects” price for NADY alone?

!??!?!?

!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

No wonder that franchise is in the toilet.

mex84 July 25, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Wow, quite a haul for the Pirates if those guys pan out.

MetsFanInVegas July 25, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Why would they consider bringing up F-Mart ! He’s TOO YOUNG.

MetsFan4Decades July 25, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Looking less and less like Omar’s gonna be doing any trading by the deadline. Should be interesting to see in the next week…..

mex84 July 25, 2008 at 8:18 pm

A small move is likely, my money is on Winn and a RH reliever from Toronto.

Constnza81V2.0 July 25, 2008 at 8:19 pm

If Church is actually healthy, I think Winn would be a nice complimentary outfielder and should be a stalwart in the #2 hole. He’ll be like Castillo but his hits leave the infield.

wrightstuff08 July 25, 2008 at 9:13 pm

lol, c’mon Constnza, Castillo has 5 or 6 hits that left the infield this year.

AngryFan July 25, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Omar is doing something. Teams will come off their insane demands because Omar and others are serious about doing w/o if they don’t.

Ibanez, Giles or Blake, with a possibility of a BP arm like a Taschner.

Not earth-shaking, but would be a help

Constnza81V2.0 July 25, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Isn’t Tabata the Yankees’ version of FMart? I guess because the Yanks got two players in return it’s not a huge haul to give away but I have a feeling a lot of Mets fans would have been uncomfortable giving away this much minor league talent for these two guys. And Omar has already said he can’t do any deals with multiple prospects. We got Santana. We have to deal with that now.

Gina July 25, 2008 at 8:29 pm

The Yankees also have a deeper system than ours. Tabata and Ohlendorf are the only guys on that list in their top ten prospects and Tabata was behind another of and Ohlendorf was 9th. And tabata isn’t playing as well now, it would akin to us trading F-mart when we still had Milledge, and then trading like our third ranked pitcher, and that’s not counting Chamberlain, Hughes and Kennedy so really their 6th ranked pitcher.

Constnza81V2.0 July 25, 2008 at 8:41 pm

It’s still not as hideous a haul for the Pirates some are making it out to be. The Yankees gave up a lot, but they had the resources to do so. The Mets were going to trade four comparable prospects, if they even have four comparable prospects.

Gina July 25, 2008 at 9:15 pm

I agree I’m not saying it’s a bad haul for the Pirates, just that it’s not a trade that’s going to really hurt the Yankees farm system. If we had trade comparable prospect it would have seemed like we gave up more.

Church4prez July 25, 2008 at 8:20 pm

THIS BLOWS!! PIRATES BLOW!! WHAT A BUNCH OF CLOWNS!! TABATA HAS BEEN A BUST THIS YEAR!! FIRE OMAR!!

Ceetar July 25, 2008 at 8:23 pm

okay..relax. We don’t play the Yankees until May of last year and it doesn’t matter.

nyr2k2 July 25, 2008 at 8:23 pm

You wanted to give up F. Martinez for Nady?

JDuelz (Athens, GA) July 25, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Even if you are joking, you’re still the worst.

nyr2k2 July 25, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Tabata, Ohlendorf, Kontos and Coke. That’s a NICE haul.

That would be like giving up Martinez, Parnell, plus two pitchers at AA with good upside (no comp on our end since our AA pitchers either have no upside or more than Ohlendorf and Coke).

Metshead1974 July 25, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Relax everyone. Forget the Yanks. Just concentrate on OUR Mets. The Yank are chasing two teams who have better pitching than them. We just have to stay on top of the Phoneys and Fish.

Nightlife July 25, 2008 at 8:23 pm

God the Pirates are an awful, awful organization.

Nightlife July 25, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Also, some of you guys need to stop caring so much about the Yankees all the time.

JDuelz (Athens, GA) July 25, 2008 at 8:25 pm

Yeah, I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand following the AL.

Metshead1974 July 25, 2008 at 8:27 pm

Agreed. You think Yankee fans care about the Mets? Don’t give them any emotions, it’s not worth it.

AngryFan July 25, 2008 at 8:28 pm

Great point….my 2nd reaction- thank goodness they weren’t moved to an NL (East) team….

BeatWritersSuck July 25, 2008 at 9:00 pm

Agree with all these points…lets just worry about our own team

Papi Chico July 25, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Yankees will receive RHP Ross Ohlendorf, Phil Coke and George Kontos, and OF Jose Tabata

lil pelf July 25, 2008 at 8:27 pm

i just want church back

Ryn05 July 25, 2008 at 8:28 pm

Tabata not Jackson? There’s a reason the Pirates are horrible.

Church4prez July 25, 2008 at 8:28 pm

TABATA IS A STIFF!! HE IS OVERHYPED AND THE YANKEES KNEW HIS VALUE WAS DOWN!! THE PIRATES ARE CLUELESS!! DAMN YANKEES

BeatWritersSuck July 25, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Calm the hell down who cares what the yankees do…jeeze

Metshead1974 July 25, 2008 at 8:33 pm

God the Cards are overrated. The Brewers and Cubs are going to expose them. Thanks to Tony LaRussa for giving the pitcher a few extra at-bats tonight….Carlos Delgado strikes again!!

Papi Chico July 25, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I saw Degado bust his book back out

MetsFan1989 July 25, 2008 at 8:40 pm

nady sucks second half. and umm. .330 avg hell no lol. and marte. even though he won a ring. he played in the worst world series by ratings i bleieve and hes going to tank under the pressure

Church4prez July 25, 2008 at 8:46 pm

the positive could be that the market prices drop now and the mets swoop in and get bay or ibanez

mistermet July 25, 2008 at 9:12 pm

As a Mets fan, I was never interested in Nady coming back here (especially for what they commanded), and frankly, I don’t see what all the fascination is over this guy. If you watched him play everyday with the Mets, you saw that he never got a big hit- never got a hit with 2 outs, RISP, and rarely with RISP in general (look it up). He was also a bit of a slug in the outfield, and kicked around more than a few balls. His best season of his career was 20 HR’s and 72 RBi’s. His second best season of his career was 17 HR and 63 RBI’s. And yeah, he’s hitting like .325 this year, but that’s going to come down near his .280 career average. He has 12 HR and 56 RBI’s this year- there are probably 30 OFers in MLB with better numbers. I just don’t see what all the fascination is with him, can somebody please explain? I just don’t understand why Mets fans wanted this guy back so bad, as he was far from overly impressive when he was here. Not that the NYY gave up a ton here, but I’d still rather get Ibanez for cheaper, or a guy like Juan Rivera even cheaper than that. I wanted to pass on Nady all along, and I’m glad the Mets didn’t get him, though they still definitely need an OFer. But I’d like somebody to explain to me what all the fascination/hub bub is with this slightly above average player. Never had more than 72 RBI’s in a season. I think he had 10 HR in April of this year and he now has 12.

metsforever July 25, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Omar shouldn’t overreact to this. The AL East is way better than what the Mets have to contend with. The Mets would likely be a distant 4th in that division right now. The moral of this is to break the slotting system and build the minor leagues up instead of signing every 30 yo retread that pops up on the waiver wire. Then they could be in on deals like this

Joe D July 25, 2008 at 9:31 pm

mistermet, Nady was the biggest reason the Mets jumped out to a huge lead through the middle of 06 when he carried the team!

Chan Ho Parking Lot July 25, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Nady did not carry the team. In 06, Beltran had an MVP caliber season (41 HR, 116 RBI), Wright had an incredible first half (20 HR, 74 RBI), and Reyes and Delgado had good years. Nady hit 6th or 7th that year and hit .260 with 14 home runs before he was traded. He was a goo complimentary player, but to say he carried the team is laughable.

bayridgehodges July 25, 2008 at 10:47 pm

I just wanna see the Red Sox go trade for Holliday now, cuz I know we won’t, and his Home/Away problem could transfer well to Fenway.

SuperSchlong July 25, 2008 at 11:44 pm

The Rockies trading Holliday would be like the Mets trading Wright. He is their golden boy–they would be nuts to dump him. Plus Colorado is only 5.5 games out. Their season is no near done. In the pathetic West they always have a chance to win the division.

Gina July 26, 2008 at 1:19 am

Wright’s like 4 years younger and locked up long-term to a relatively cheap contract. Holiday’s contract is up next year, it’s completely different situations.

SuperSchlong July 25, 2008 at 11:42 pm

Poeple are missing the obvious about Nady: the guy has been very injury prone the past two seasons. His numbers have indeed been stellar, but what good is that if you don’t play?

LongJohnMaine July 26, 2008 at 1:08 am

Brian Cashman must have blackmailed Neal Huntington. I don’t understand how the Yankees can get a very good complimentary player in Nady and a good lefty reliever in Marte for a pitcher like Ohlendorf, who has shown absolutely nothing in the big leagues; Tabata, whose stock has taken a hit this year and has attitude problems, and these two pitchers who I’ve never even heard of.

Also, Matt says that the deal may have been more about quantity than quality if the team took on Marte’s contract as well as Nady’s. Um, what? The Pirates are that frigging cheap that they didn’t want to pay Marte the rest of his expiring contract for the rest of 2008, approximately $800,000? What the hell?! I thought this new regime in Pittsburgh was supposed to be smart. I thought wrong. The Pirates will always suck with an attitude like that. I can’t believe they couldn’t even get Austin Jackson. Horrible.

Lastly, Joba Chamberlain reminds me of Clemens. Real tough guy throwing at heads when you pitch in the AL.

Two-By-Four July 26, 2008 at 2:00 am

This trade is consistent with the Yankees approach of taking on additional salary, even if in this case it was actually ridiculously cheap of the Pirates, and obtaining talent for lower rated prospects or suspects.

The Pirates will be a team in a constant rebuilding stage with lower priced marginally young players ad infinitum. The franchise is a joke and should be put out of its misery.

djstue July 26, 2008 at 9:04 am

A friggin bag of balls. That’s all it took. Bits and parts that will never even sniff a Major League ballpark. Unbelievable

Do you really expect to close out this race with Tatis and Chavez at the corners? Come on Omar?!

With one fell swoop, the Skanks block Boston, Tampa, and the Mets!

I just can’t believe it?! I bet Omar waits for the waivers in Aug.

bigvito22 July 26, 2008 at 10:19 am

I still love X, I don’t care if he’s a Yank or not…for me, this at least gives the Yanks a player I like and we won’t ever have to deal with him this year unless we get to a Subway WS, haha.

I don’t like the Yanks and I certainly would never root for them…but to me the whole Yanks/Mets rivalry is overrated. Maybe this is because I live in CT and so I’m not as caught up in the in-city rivalry, I dunno. Fact is, outside of playing in NY they have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

That being said, if the Yanks happen to go far this year, good for them, they’ve had to overcome a lot…I prefer to focus on my own team. LET’S GO METS!!!

mikepelfreyismyguy July 26, 2008 at 10:28 am

my god, you people make it seem like the phillies got nady. FORGERT ABOUT IT, GIVE IT A REST, nady will slow down in the second half and i am betting marte becomes latroy hawkins, and they arent even in your own division, as for the mets, they just need a solid player, not an all star, ibanez is a good player, 11 hr, like 60 something rbi’s i would take that, now, as for the mets, good move not breaking down, the yankees were just hypocritical on that move. remember in the offseason, they said that they refused on the best pitcher in the game in johan santana for young players, and now they give them up, wow, i mean the mets should stop kissing up to the commisioner’s office and draft above slot, draft maybe an outfielder, and you are set long term

reyes

wright

ike davis

reese havens

fernando amrtinez

i seriously would like to see carlos beltran long term after the 7 year deal

ryan church, maybe sign him 3-4 years, and draft someone

rotation

santana

maine

big pelf

oliver perez 3-4 years/brad holt

jonathon niese

closer- billy wagner 3 years/eddie kunz

set up-bobby parnell

uppertank July 26, 2008 at 12:38 pm

hey remember when nady was on the mets? he’s mediocre

mistermet July 26, 2008 at 3:36 pm

What is the fascination with a guy who has 12 HR and 56 RBi’s two-thirds through a baseball season? Joe D- you are an id*ot. Your comment above makes you look foolish.

mistermet July 26, 2008 at 3:40 pm

And last year Nady had 20 HR and 72 RBI’s…somebody in a post above called that a “stellar year.” David wright and other more “stellar” players put up those #’s in 3 months. Can somebody please tell me what the fascination is with Nady? There are about 30-40 OFers with better #’s than him the past few years. His current .325 average will come down very near his lifetime avg. of .280

Again, Joe D: you are an id*ot

mistermet July 26, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Nady was terrible in the clutch for the Mets, especially with 2 outs, RISP, or with RISP in general (look it up). And he was a slug in the Outfield- kicked the ball around constantly. Been there, done that- did not need to see him back here. I’d rather bring in someone else, and the Mets will.

ryno July 26, 2008 at 4:34 pm

The Pirates should be embarrassed by this trade. They got spare parts in this deal. Tabata has been nothing but trouble, on and off the field. Not only has he gotten into fights in the dugout, but has let his immaturity carry onto the field. He’s just another Elijah Dukes… ton of talent but no self control.
