Prior to tonight’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Ryan Church has been cleared to do light conditioning after which he will play in at least six minor-league rehab games.
…which, by my math, suggests he will not be ready to return to the Mets until at least August, i.e., after the Trade Deadline…
Also, Manuel told reporters that while Luis Castillo continues to workout in Port St. Lucie, he will not return until at least the first week of August.
Lastly, Pedro Martinez has been officially put on the Bereavement List, and will be replaced in the rotation on Saturday by Brandon Knight, as noted yesterday evening.
Manuel suggested Knight could stick around in a different role after Martinez rejoins the team.

Poor Knight? Cant go to the Olympics now i guess. I think i would be bum’d, but then again it dont pay the bills.
This team should realize NO ONE wants Luis Castillo back. He ABSOLUTELY better not start.
And by the way – is it no coincidence that Jose is back to being Jose with Castillo gone? That blinged-out, slap happy, has-been has NO place on this team.
I think Manuel is smart enough to know that.
Let’s hope so. Take your time Luis, we don’t miss you (or need you in the least bit).
Honestly, I don’t even think he’s that hurt. Obviously he only has some value to the team if he’s absolutely 100%, even at 80% we have better options, I think they’re just realllly letting him take his time.
Jose was playing well before Castillo got hurt. There is little correlation there.
I could careless about Castillo, but I do know Easily as the starting 2nd baseman for the who year ain’t going to cut it either.
I agree, both Delgado and Reyes are playing well since Castillo is gone…..less late nights and game day jaking going on…anybody ever read Ball Four? Jaking is the term they gave to slacking off…..
Argenis Reyes is a sparkplug who will be a pain in the butt to the opposition.
Castillo can take Luis Aguayo’s spot along the lines a third…
Jose Reyes best month was May. Castillo was still with the team and playing that month. Reyes had a good month in June too – Castillo was still with the team. July is a little better than June, but worse than May.
There is no correlation between Reyes’ performance and Castillo being on the DL. It’s all in your mind.
Brandon Knight……
Was set to retire, gave it one more shot this year, seems to be doing good down there, picked for the Olympic team, now getting his first ML start tomorrow night? Scary, but I hope he really, really gets it done. Especially since I’ll be at the game….
Yea, could be “The Natural II”. Wouldnt that be great.
Even if it’s just “The Nelson (Figueroa) II” it will be good for a couple of starts.
If Church can come back producing like he was, and Delgado can stay hot and Omar picks up an OF bat then this team can make a real run at something
great news for church, it’s about time we get some good new on a player that is suffering a serious injury. Wags injury wasn’t really serious, but getting church back is maybe the biggest thing this team needs, besides acquiring another corner outfielder.
Who said chemistry doesn’t mean anything….Castillo will not be on this team anytime soon. Look at what the Twins are doing to hold Franaisco Liriano down in the minors. The guy is 9-2 with a 3 ERA, and he STILL is not called up! Just trying to keep his serice time down and Liriano filed a grievance through the union. So, holding McSlappy down should not be any big deal here.
I really hope Church can come back 100%…that would be the best case and really cure our OF woes. Of course, Minaya can’t assume that, so we should be another body in the mix shortly.
Anyone know anything about what type of stuff Knight has? The guy is 33 years old and he struck out 12 in 6 innings in his last start.
I thought Church HAD been doing light conditioning. So he has just been chilling at home and watching from the dugout when the Mets are at Shea?
Trade
F-Mart, Niese, Carp, and Heilman
for
Roy Halladay
Trade
Carlos Muniz and Lucas Duda
for
Raul Ibanez and Jose Vidro (salary dump, thats why u can trade crappy prospects
Send down Nick Evans, Robbie Cancel,
Call up Kunz to replace Heilman
bench: tatis, vidro, castro, reyes, chavez
Rotation: Johan, Halladay, Maine, Ollie, Pelfrey,
bullpen: Wags, Sanchez, Feliciano, Show, Smith, Kunz,
lineup: Reyes, Church, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Ibanez, Easley, Schneider/Castro
Only question is what to do with Pedro…
You must be one heck of a GM in MVP Baseball.
None of that is going to happen. Halladay isn’t going anywhere. Vidro sucks. Ibanez is ok.
