Buzz: Mets check in on Reliever’s Market

by Matthew Cerrone on July 27th, 2008 at 9:40 pm

In a post to Baseball Prospectus, John Perrotto writes that the Mets have made trade proposals for A’s RHP Huston Street and Rockies RHP Brian Fuentes, while also checking in on M’s LHP Arthur Rhodes and Rangers LHP Eddie Guardado.

However, the Rangers have no interest in trading Guardado, ‘despite extensive interest,’ according to Jason Stark in his most recent column for ESPN.com.

…and from what i can gather, A’s GM Billy Beane, who is a master at trade market economics, is tempting teams with street, because so many teams are interested in relief pitching, and, while there are lots of pitchers available to be had, they are all mediocre…

For instance, according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, citing ‘team sources,’ the Dodgers are ‘on the verge’ of trading 3B Andy LaRoche to the A’s for RHP Huston Street.

…la roche is los angeles’s top position prospect, or Fernando Martinez to the Mets, and so i just don’t see the Mets giving up such a bounty for street or fuentes when they have more obvious holes and a farm system that cannot fill them all at once…

…that said, the buzz around baseball suggests the Mets, Dodgers, Phillies, Marlins and Brewers are all showing the most interest in the relievers market…

By the way, according to in-the-know Dan Graziano in a recent report for the Star-Ledger, the Mets have also expressed interest in Jays LHP Brian Tallet and Giants LHP Jack Taschner.

postGame: Mets 9 Cardinals 1

by Matthew Cerrone on July 27th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

The Mets defeated the Cardinals by the score of 9 to 1 in Shea Stadium today.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from today’s game, go to SNY.tv.

The formula for this game was simple: Johan Santana turned in a dominant complete-game, six-hitter, during which he allowed just one run, while David Wright, Ramon Castro and Fernando Tatis spent time dropping fly balls in to the bleachers.  The result was a clean, confident, comfortable win.

Carlos Beltran made a fabulous catch, running, tracking, leaping and robbing a potential home run, going above and beyond the wall to snow-cone the fly ball.  Oustanding.  As Keith Hernandez repeatedly said, “It just doesn’t get any better than that.”

The crowd chanted ‘Johan (clap, clap), Johan (clap, clap),’ throughout the entire ninth inning, willing Santana on to the first complete game from a Met since 2006.

The Mets are a cohesive team right now, and I like it.

The Mets begin a three-game series with the Marlins tomorrow in Florida, with John Maine (9-7, 4.20 ERA) taking on Ricky Nolasco (10-6, 3.99 ERA).

Buzz: Yankees could Turn to Bannister

by Matthew Cerrone on July 27th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

According to the Kansas City Star, if the Yankees are unable to acquire Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners, they could look to swap OF Melky Cabrera with the Royals for RHP Brian Bannister.

in April, when bannister was 3–0 with a 0.86 ERA, i was forced to read e-mail after e-mail and listen to phone call after phone call on talk radio about how Omar Minaya was an ‘idiot’ for trading away bannister for RHP Ambiorix Burgos…

odd, now that bannister is 7–9 with a 5.40 ERA in 21 starts, those e-mails and phone calls have seemingly stopped

Jimmy Rollins stolen-base streak ended yesterday when Brian McCann caught him in the first inning of Saturday’s game.

Carroll Rogers looks at four possible trades of Braves 1B Mark Teixeira for another first baseman.  The James Loney deal seems most likely to me, as the Dodgers front office is more likely to waste a valuable young player to win now.

Mike Phillips seems to think an SI photo shoot caused Dan Uggla’s slump.  Please.

Jason Bergman pitches today for the Nationals.  He’s 1-7 this season despite a decent 4.21 ERA. The Nationals have scored three runs or less in 11 or Bergman’s 14 starts.

Buzz: Turning to Ibanez, Bay and Winn

by Matthew Cerrone on July 27th, 2008 at 11:29 am

According to Jayson Stark, in a post to the MLB Trade Deadline blog for ESPN.com, now that Xavier Nady and Casey Blake are off the market, the Mets will turn their attention to M’s OF Raul Ibanez, “whom they believe is their only remaining realistic option to acquire as an outfield bat.”

The left-handed hitting Ibanez, 35, is hitting .275 with 14 HR and 61 RBI for the Mariners this season, while batting .307 against lefties and .262 against righties.

In a report for Newsday, in which he explains why Manny Ramirez is not an option for the Mets, Ken Davidoff writes, “The Mariners have been asking a high price in return for Ibañez.”

like in other cases, the buzz from seattle is that the M’s must get back two high-ceiling prospects, equal to the type of talent they would draft with two first-round picks…

Meanwhile, according to Peter Gammons, in a post to ESPN.com, the Pirates are still listening to offers for OF Jason Bay, “but right now there doesn’t seem to be anyone willing to step up and pay the price.”

Such as the Mets, who, according to Stark, feel the asking price for Bay is too ‘excessive.’

In a recent report for SI.com, in which he too explains why Ramirez will not be traded to the Mets, Jon Heyman writes, regarding Pittsburgh’s asking price:

“Mets people balked at including top outfield prospect Fernando Martinez for Nady and are said to be extremely reluctant to part with either Martinez or left-handed pitching prospect Jon Niese.”

Yesterday, in a video report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal said the Mets will not trade Martinez, Niese, nor Robert Parnell.

Lastly, in a separate post, citing ‘one baseball man who has spoken with the Mets,’ Stark writes that the Giants and Mets have had recent conversations about 34–year-old OF Randy Winn.

…from what i can gather out of san francisco, if the Mets are willing to take on all of winn’s money, including his $8.6 million salary for next season, they will not have to give up a significant prospect in trade

Winn is batting .275 with five HR, 40 RBI and 20 stole bases in 98 games for the Giants this season, during which he has played both center and right field.

By the way, in Stark’s post, he also details Minaya’s efforts to wade through the relief pitcher market, which could include such targets as Cla Meredith, Chad Bradford and Jeremy Affeldt.
