In Newsday, Arthur Staple profiles Mets 2B Argenis Reyes, who grew up nearby Jose Reyes in the Dominican Republic.
…staple doesn’t mention it, but i recall hearing that reyes and reyes played in the same pick up games back in the DR, which, if true, is an awesome twist to this new tandem…i will not lie, i’m willing to let reyes play, just because i think the idea of having reyes and reyes succeed on the middle infield would be damn cool…
Manuel, on Reyes, while speaking to reporters:
“One of the things Felipe Alou used to talk about was a guy who was always in the middle of something. [Reyes] seems to be always in the middle of something. Whether he gets on on a fielder’s choice and eventually scores, whether he makes a big play defensively, he’s always in the middle of something. That’s what’s intriguing me about this young man. I really like what I’ve seen so far…What we have seen is a good player. He has been extremely impressive and has brought a lot of enthusiasm and energy to a team that sometimes kind of lacks that…I’m going to try to find out here in these next few days or weeks and see exactly what kind of player we’ve got. I plan to play him a lot unless I see something different.”
In 37 at bats since joining the Mets, Reyes is batting .297, but with just one extra base hit, six strike outs and one stolen base.
He is hitting .300 against left-handed pitching, .296 against righties, and has yet to be charged with an error in the field.
…i will always be a fan of this sort of player…you know, guy who is viewed as simply being the overachieving bench player, but who, though he doesn’t have the best physical talent on the field, makes up for it with smart, hard-nosed play and grinds his way in to the starting lineup…sort of like a David Eckstein or Craig Counsell, or even a Miguel Cairo from time to time…
Prior to yesterday’s game, Mets Asst. GM Tony Bernazard told
reporters that Fernando Martinez is day-to-day with a ‘tender’ right hamstring, which is the same hamstring he injured earlier in the season.
…for what it’s worth, i have heard that the hamstring is sore, tweaked, tight, tender, etc., and every time i think, ‘ugh,’ not good…fernando missed five weeks earlier in the season because of the same hamstring…he missed a ton of time last season with a hand injury…frankly, it seems he is taking the word ‘replacement’ a bit too seriously when eyeing the left-field void at Shea Stadium…
Carlos Beltran is on pace to hit roughly .265 with 25 home runs, 110 RBI and 25 stolen bases, while batting clean up for the Mets.
However, in the nine games since the All-Star Break, Beltran is batting .229 with two extra base hits and four RBI, while batting just .241 during the month of July.
He was 1 for 4 last night with three walks, a strike out and run scored.
In the New York Post, Mark Hale quotes Howard Johnson as saying he has seen a recent improvement in Beltran.
…Jerry Manuel has said he likes to put a player in the two-hole to try and get him more fastballs, and thus hopefully get him going…it may be time to do this with beltran, who seemingly prefers to hit second anyways…
The Cardinals (57–48) defeated the Mets (56–47) by the score of 10 to 8 in 14 innings at Shea Stadium.
