Buzz: Rockies may Sit on Brian Fuentes
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 28, 2008 2:45 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal, in his most recent report for FoxSports.com, the Rockies will trade LHP Brian Fuentes for a young, major-league ready starting pitcher.

Yesterday, according to a report from Jon Heyman for SI.com, Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd says it is unlikely he will trade Fuentes or OF Matt Holliday.

the Rockies are in a tough spot, which would probably explain the consistently mixed messages…they built up so much goodwill with their fans last season, and a firesale would erase it…plus, last year, they came back from a poor start to make it to the World Series…this season, despite being 10 games below .500, they are 28–20 in their last 48 games and are just six games out of first place in a weak NL West…so, it’s understandable that recent buzz from colorado is suggesting they may keep fuentes and holliday and actually look to acquire a back-end starting pitcher instead

According to a recent report in the Denver Post, the Rockies had asked the Mets for LHP Jon Niese in a deal for Fuentes.

Similarly, the Rockies recently asked the Marlins to give up RHP Anibel Sanchez in a deal for Fuentes, which they rejected, according to Jason Stark in a post to ESPN.com.

basically, the Rockies are asking all interested parties for the top pitching prospect, like rosenthal suggested, be it Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy from the Yankees, Clay Buccholz from the Red Sox, Nick Adenhart from the Angels, and so on…

The Rays, Cardinals, Angels, Red Sox, Mets, Tigers, Yankees, Marlins, D’Backs and Phillies have all been linked to Fuentes in published reports.

Way too high a price for someone who will become the 4th lefty in our pen.

    Speaking of sitting on Fuentes..

The Rockies can sit on it.

im starting to feel the mets wont do anything. i think that is a mistake. Not saying they should go after big names, but we need a reliever or outfielder

I actually think we are ok in the bullpen. Duaner just went through a rough patch. We have too many specialists unfortunately; we could really use a guy who can get both sides of the plate out.

      Joe Smith, Heilman, Duaner, Wagner

      Feliciano, Schoeneweiss, Muniz/Collazo

I’m ok with that as long as we use our pitchers correctly. Collazo and Muniz should be used to give our other guys some time off. For example when we are losing by 1 run, or in a blowout.

    Bring back Timo Perez!

the rockies should just keep fuentes and make an all out bid for a chance to be in the playoffs especially in a terrible nl west division.
the rockies are asking for too much for fuentes.

trade rumors are the same as watching day time soap operas.
let me know when something actually happens…

Who’s in the mood for some fish?

    umm we dodged a bullet!
the braves almost traded for Bay but it was killed when the Pirates owner saw the offer
    Phew!

    • Bruce Boisclair says:

And even if they did, so what? They have some serious pitching issues and they probably will trade Texeira anyway (’cause they’re going to lose him next year). Bay is pretty good, but the Braves probably would have paid up with some pretty good talent.)

  8. Bruce Boisclair says:

Saw on Adam Rubin’s blog that Niese was promoted to AAA. (A little strange, given that they keep kids who they really like in AA, and it’s closer to NYC.) Nevertheless, I think they are challenging him and may even give him a peak towards the end of the year, depending on Pedro’s health. Looks like he is staying put.

    • ravi3 says:

Or they are trying to build his value…does he make a start before the trade deadline?

  9. maybealittlemoredelgado says:

that price for bay is obscene.

  10. krispy644 says:

forget Fuentes! he’s going to the Cards, they desperately need a closer.

Arthur Rhodes: Good comeback year, but he’s old. good enough as a rental

Brian Tallet: on the DL. dont trust his health right now. good lefty though

Jack Taschener: best option. young, healthy, having an alright year, too many walks though.

I dont understand why noone is bringing up Nelson Cruz from the Texas Rangers. Im sure he can be obtained. i rather take a shot on him than depleting our system even more for these descent at best outfielders(bay, ibanzez, dunn)
