In a post to ESPN.com over the weekend, citing ‘one baseball man who has
spoken with the Mets,’ Stark writes that the Giants and Mets have had recent conversations about 34–year-old OF Randy Winn.
However, according to Ken Davidoff in Newsday, “The Mets haven’t shown much interest (in Winn).”
…from what i can gather out of san francisco, if the Mets are willing to take on all of winn’s money, including his $8.6 million salary for next season, they will not have to give up a significant prospect in trade…
In his report for the New York Post, in which he details who on the Mets is ‘untouchable,’ and who is not, Joel Sherman writes that the Giants are unwilling to eat any portion of Winn’s salary, while quoting a Mets official as saying, “That is a lot of money, and you tie yourself up and miss out on somebody else you really want (for 2009 and beyond).”
Winn is batting .275 with five HR, 40 RBI and 20 stole bases in 98 games for the Giants this season, during which he has played both center and right field.

plz tatis is better than winn
Winn is no better than a combination of Endy Chavez and Tatis. He’s an average hitter with above average defense. He just happens to cost 8 million dollars too much.
too young.
he has a contract for $8+m next year. no thanks.
So as far as I can tell we’ve had conversations with everyone about everybody but we haven’t shown much interest in anyone.
I think you’ve just written the tagline for the movie “He’s Just Not That Into You.”
It’s like the Mets are the teasers of the MLB.
I see little point in pursuing this guy. He’s a fine player, but Tatis will presumably produce as much as if not more than Winn. Why take on the salary and possibly miss out on a better player?
I think I probably echo the sentiments of man Mets fans on this.
I think female and trans-gender Mets fans would also agree.
LMAO
Don’t leave out the Unic’s!
MANY Mets fans… thank you :-)
This might be the worst possibility out of all of the rumors, Fernando Tatis is better than Randy Winn, if Church comes back Im starting to be fine with an Endy/Tatis platoon and maybe look for a role player outfielder that can be added in August. These rumors are all pretty ridiculous
Agreed, I’d have to imagine that Winn and his 8.6 million will clear waivers in August. If we can’t add Dunn or Bay and Church doesn’t come back I feel like we could add Winn much like we did with Shawn Green a few years ago.
I’m sure they wouldn’t have to give up any significant prospect to get Zito if they were willing to take on his money either. For that matter, they probably wouldn’t have to give up too much for a flaming bag of turds….
No way! Stick with Tatis.
How about this “Mets official” tells us what the Mets ticket prices are for next year before claiming that $8.6MM next year would “tie them up?”
Does that mean Alou’s $8MM is “tying us up” this year?
I think Winn is a good fit, and you could get him for nothing but money, which this franchise is drowning in. Who do they play on playing in LF next season anyway? Alou again?
Blah.. more garbage OF…
Go get Bay or Manny
don’t hold your breath
Tatis is not better than Winn. Tatis currently, at this moment, right now is playing better than Winn. Yes I agree. However, its does not make Tatis a better player over the long run. Winn has a history of playing well year in year out whereas Tatis does not. Also Tatis has been pretty lucky playing the OF. In all fairness Tatis is learning to play the OF. Winn is a good OF.
I wouldn’t trade for Winn only because the Mets do not need another table setter as much as they need a RBI guy. Pass on Winn, but not because Tatis is better or worse.
NEXT!
Quite frankly, this guys stats compare with Endy Chavez’s. And Chavez is a little younger and plays stellar defense. Plus Chavez does other intangibles which help win.
As far as Tatis, he is better than this guy. The only reason to have this guy is not to start but to replace Nick Evans. For that reason I don’t see it as a bad move, but it doesn’t replace Alou. But I wouldn’t want him for next year.
Quite frankly, I think Tatis may be winning the starting job as it is. We may have caught lighting in a bottle on this one. He has 7 homers right now, I would guess that over a full year that may equate to about 15-20 and he has 26 RBIs which may equate to about 75-80 RBIs. He’s hitting .315 right now but you gotta figure he will hit about .275-.280. I honestly think he has earned the job.
Plus his defense is no worse than Alou’s and he has a decent arm from the outfield.
Also from mlbtraderumors: The Braves had a deal for Jason Bay in place but the Pirates owner turned it down. The Braves though will continue to pursue Bay.
What is the point of the Braves getting Bay? They need pitching not offense.
I would guess they were thinking of deals that would help this year and next. And they’re not really desperate for pitching or anything.
They’re not? What in the name of Jo-Jo Reyes are you talking about?!
What race are the Braves watching? They should sell, sell, and sell some more. They blew 9-3 and 5-0 leads the last two days. What makes them think they are in this?
They could maybe sell spare parts but there’s no reason for them to full out sell, with their core of players, most of whom are very young, they could easily compete next year with a few fixes. And Jo-Jo Reyes is their second round pick a few years ago, he’s been up and down all season but there’s no reason to think he’s going to stay horrible. In fact going into July he had very respectable numbers, it’s just his last two starts he’s imploded. Are they going to compete this year with the rotation? Maybe (probably) not, but Bay isn’t a rental player, he’s under control past this season. And their pitching staff could very easily be better next season.
at mlb rumors the braves want bay!! weird
I guess they see the Mets and Phillies as vulnerable.
Alternatively, in typical strange Braves fashion, they are planning and plotting for next year– about to trade Texeira away but going to simultaneously replace his bat with Bay.
I don’t think it’s strange. I’d say it’s smart. They’ll possibly come out even in terms of prospects they give up and receiver, and they’ll still be in a position to compete next year.
man, I hate the braves.
Well . . . plugging him in to the #2 hole would free (a healthy) Church to move down to an RBI spot in the lineup, dropping Easley down therefore lenghtening the lineup.
Reyes
Winn/Church
Wright
Delgado
Beltran
Church/Tatis
Easley/Castro
Schnieder/Reyes
Not bad.
Maybe we give up a “medium prospect” and pickup less money?
I still think he’s a better option than anyone else out there. TO me he’s a more consistent hitter which will translate better into the NL and out team needs.
You’re forgetting Castillo. The way Church is going, Castillo will be back on the roster before him. With Castillo in the lineup, Winn becomes a non-impact. Where do you bat him? 7th? So you’re making a deal for a 7-spot hitter? And assuming his high salary for 2 years? He’ll be a platoon guy in that outfield – a very expensive platoon. Pass.
u know, i’m starting to change my tune here too. I was all about getting an OF, but i really think an Endy/Tatis (murhpy too eventually) platoon will be fine as long as we can count on church (fingers crossed)
I like our bullpen, but they have shown many (not TOO many) times that they can implode. If we’re gonna trade some prospects that we dont deem “untouchable” i think we should try to upgrade the bullpen.
I do however think that given more opportunities that collazo, muniz, and eventually kunz can help us as well.
sign bonds
I just threw up a little in my mouth.
I think whenslydale meant to write “sing bonds”
How is Winn an upgrade over what we already have? I thought we needed a corner OF with some pop? Winn is an older more expensive version of Endy without the great defense.
I’d do this deal only if it’s straight up Winn for Castillo. Probability: Zero point zero.
lol like the number of peopel that went to eric the midget’s appearance last month
How about Castillo for Winn? Your crap for our crap.
there is no chance any team is taking 3 years of castillo and his bad knees
Wow, you made a sensible post!!
I have printed it out and framed it!
You should immediately retire from posting and go out on a high note, a la George Costanza!
Look, I love what Tatis has done. But i’m not willing to take a chance that it continues thru the rest of the year. If it means taking on salary, then who really cares…one extra 8 million for Randy Winn doesn’t matter. They need another OF that is serviceable
How is Randy Winn not taking a chance? His numbers are just a tad better than Brian Schneider. He isn’t that productive with his bat. He can run some but so can Endy.
An extra 8 mil for Winn doesn’t matter?
I think were it your money you’d be singing a different tune.
The only reason I would go for this deal is that it wouldn’t cost us any of our decent prospects (unlike any Bay trade). The only name out there that I would consider giving up Martinez or Niese for is Manny, and even that would take some deep thought…
As far as the money, why should I care about that? It’s not my money and I see no immediate plans to pass the hat for the Wilpons…
Will Randy Winn be of value to the Mets? I have no idea, but as an expensive backup I don’t see him causing any harm…
Winn is not a bad deal if they will throw in the LHRP we have been interested in.
Look guys he is not here to replace Tatis. He is an insurance plan against Church not being healthy, Tatis and Endy not keeping up their pace.
Once Church is back, do you know how valuable Tatis can be as the super sub playing 3-4 games a week?
He can give Wright, Delgado, Church, Winn, and even Beltran if you slide Winn over to CF, a break. That’s big down the stretch.
I agree with it in this manner, however, I don’t like having him here for next year at that price.
Next year it’s nothing. He holds the fort down for Fmart.
seeing the giant uniform and trade or free agent just brings me to a point where i’d like to thank the baseball g-ds for not letting barry zito end up with the mets.
just take a shot, i mean kunz, as hyped as he is, projects as a 7th 8th inning guy, as for niese, he is a back end of the rotation guy, but the mets want to hold onto him cuz that is what they need with santana maine and pelf around, as for murphy, i mean, isnt reese havens gonna be a second baseman, or a catcher??? and finally, WINN? that is the best that the mets can come up with. omar minaya makes up so many stories it is hilarious, he says “we will make a trade” and they probably wont, for the fact that they have nothing to give and winn sucks. but really, the mets should get someone considering fmart is not ready, and he is injured.
The Mets also need to keep their eye on Dylan Owen as well. I would figure by the end of this year he would see some time at AA, and if continues to pitch as he has been, he could be due for some time in the majors near the end of next year. Granted that is 100% over the top optimism. Just nice to see our prospects gaining some momentum.
Jose Guillen. He’d come cheap as he’s owed big bucks next year and is better than anyone that has been rumored except Manny. I’d gamble on his history of attitude trouble as he can flat out hit.
Not bad . . .
exactly what i noted here yesterday. KC newspapers
several days ago in noting possible moves stated–
Guillen might be available & fairly cheap. Such as a Power Bat at 1B (Carp?).
+1
I don’t think Carp is much of a power bat. More like Evans.
Carp is much better hitter then Evans.. and a much worse fielder…
Have you look at their AA stats? I don’t know what scouts say but Evans seems to be a better hitter by a pretty big margin.
Get them to “throw in” Ron Mahay and I’m even more intrigued.
Do you really think Guillen would play in NY? Does anyone remember the two brawls that he basically started single-handedly?
Who cares bout that?
I just have not seen his name mentioned. It seems strange that the Royals would sign him to a big contract only to trade him when he has been about what they expected.
That being said if we could get him and Mahay for Evans and Carp then so be it.
MLB Trade Rumors brought it up a month or so ago and KC said it wanted to keep him around.
He’s not mentioned because he’s not moving.
He doesn’t necessarily have to be better than Tatis (which he might be anyway). Randy Winn keeps us from relying on Tatis, Chavez, and Anderson as starters. Since Church’s future contribution is still a question mark, picking up Winn without giving up prospects would be smart.
By the way, Matt, you’re doing a great job breaking down the trade market player by player.
Yup..good call on Omar waiting out Nady… oh wait…
Hard to be mad at Omar because the Pirates GM is an idiot.
So is Dunn not being pursued because of the former Reds employee now working for the Mets? I don’t get why the Mets wouldn’t want Dunn considering you get two draft picks if you don’t resign him.
I want Dunn so bad!! I know Omar is smarter than to be fooled by the low batting average. If the Mets organization is truly not interested then it must be because the Reds want too much in return or because Dunn is a big jerk or something.
You want a kick in the face
2 picks are nice, but they are at best in the 2nd half of the first round and a sandwich. Plus, they won’t even hit the system until until Summer 2009.
Then add a few years before they are ready (if they ever are) and the impact is pretty far down the road.
Compare that to the value of a ML ready prospect (or at least well proven and close), and ofter the guys on hand are worth more than the future pick.
Of course, you get the major league rental too, so that is the value that is supposed to offset the delay in seeing your prospects.
I love this time of year. All of the in depth analysis, and detailed breakdowns on the deals being discussed.
Then deals come down that no one predicted or even rumored, like the Nady/Marte deal to the Yankees!
I expect more of the same this week. A few guys often mentioned will get traded, but not to the expected places, and a few deals that were never on the radar will also go down!
That trade is proof that it pays to have a vast farm system full of B/B+ prospects. Or maybe it just proves that Neal Huntington is a nitwit.
he is a clueless idiot. that trade with the skankees annoyed me to no end. if he got nothing back for those 2 guys to any other team than them, i would not care. why help the skankees?
Who cares what they will or won’t have to give up. Winn is not an upgrade from Tatis. Why take on the extra money? this would make no sense.
But he is definitely an upgrade to Chavez, Anderson and Evans. Winn provides insurance in case Tatis regresses to career norms or Church cannot play.
People just don’t understand this. It’s like we are knocking Tatis. Tatis will still be starting until Church is acutally ON the team.
I think the mets have zero (point zero) interest in almost all of these guys. I think they are just creating the perception that they have a lot of options to give themselves any extra leverage they can.
I really think Manny or Bay are the only position players who provide enough of an upgade to even considering making a deal. Otherwise, shore up the pen…
ibanez could play left field with tatis in right and church prob wont come back this year and sustain enough without getting symptoms again. seattle will ultimately come down with their price
I hope church can comeback. Tatis could play some 2B. He is an infielder
For the last time, stop with the Ibanez crap. It’s already been addressed time and time again.
Why would Seattle back off on their demands? They want and will want what they can get back in 2 draft picks. They do not mind offering him arbitration where as we would not want to do that at all.
what happened to Matt Wise by the way? is he out for the season? I cant remember
8.5 mil and 1 year for Winn?
PASS
All I can say is that the names floating around (I don’t believe Manny is getting traded) are pretty weak, so it’s hard to blame Omar for not having pulled the trigger. I honestly believe he wanted Blake, but the Dodgers had better talent/more surplus minor league talent. I think we will do a deal, but it may not be for anyone that has been mentioned.
I know alot of people have mentioned Tatis. How can you not ignore what he has done? He is an important part of the calculus here— i.e., will someone you trade for be as productive as him? Then, you complicate matters by asking about Church. Getting him back is also big. We might be sitting back until August to have the complete picture…
I’d rather have tatis
Man, unless the right deal comes around, I would almost be content standing pat. The August schedule is absurdly easy on us. We play exactly two teams that are currently over .500 next month–Philly and Florida. Here is who we play next month:
Houston – 7
Pittsburgh – 5
San Diego – 3
Washington – 3
Atlanta – 3
Florida – 6
Philadelphia – 2
If they keep playing like they are I could see them winning 17-20 of those 29 games next month. I just hope they have turned the corner when it comes to beating teams they should be beating, they’ve been pretty decent against good teams.
Would you mind pulling up their W-L record against these teams (sans FLA and PHI)? Something tells me it might be below .500…
I know we’re like 2-7 or 3-7 against the Braves. And didn’t the Padres sweep us in 4 games? Or was that the Giants.
ATL- 2-7
Padres- 0-4
Houston- 0-0
Pittsburgh-1-1
Washington-5-4
So 10-16
And by 10-16 I mean 8-16
I wouldn’t expect trouble with any of these teams except the fricking Nats and the Braves.
wow…worse than i thought…let’s hope we can turn this one around.
Yeah it’s pretty bad. Combined 8-16 against those teams (haven’t played Houston yet) keep in my mind they got swept in 4 games series by San Deigo and Atlanta, which accounts for the majority of the losses in the record. Atlanta should be much easier this time around, especially if they make some moves this week.
Win Losses against
Atl – 2-7
SD – 0-4
Wash – 5-4
Pit – 1-1
You see the names of the minor leaguers the Pirates wanted in that aborted Bay deal? Lillibridge, Jones and A ball pitching.
Holy christmas, they’re WAYYYYYYYYY too concerned with getting quantity over quality
Seriously. Maybe we can trade our whole A ball team is get him. Is there anyone important on there?
while quoting a Mets official as saying, “That is a lot of money, and you tie yourself up and miss out on somebody else you really want (for 2009 and beyond).”
Hmmmm………..Sort like how I feel with Castillo’s contract and how that relates to Orlando Hudson. Way to go Omar.
This also worries me. This quote might mean that the Mets will not cut ties with Castillo and eat his contract, and they will not aquire Orlando Hudson.
taking quantity over quality is enough of an indication that the pirates front office does not care about winning in the future.
To everyone saying that Tatis is better than Winn: Why has Tatis played in only 249 games since ‘02 as compared to Winn’s 1029?
Tatis is having a GREAT comeback year, but you need someone on the backburner because you shouldn’t expect it to last. We all hope it does, but what if pitchers figure him out again and it doesn’t…”Dont fix what isnt broken” doesnt apply here because you need to prepare for the future.
That being said, getting Church back will do more than any trade would. Uncertainty’s a bitch.
Is Kenny Lofton staying in shape?
I was just going to write that. Why take on Winn and his overblown contract when you can sign the exact same player in Kenny Lofton for at least 1/4 of the price? And not give up ANY minor leaguers…HELLO earth to logic, come in please…
Agreed. Plus we would be Lofton’s 17,000th team
LHP Jon Niese has been promoted to Triple A. congrats Jon Niese.
bobby parnell needs to be promoted to triple a if he does well in his next two starts in double a.
Also Brad Holt struck out 14 in 6 innings of work, Holt has a 1.57 ERA so far. Looking like a solid pick so far, but it is still way too early to tell.
One thing I will say is that the Mets put WAY too much emphasize on chemistry. Should we get Dunn? No because he is all about himself. How about Manny? Too many character issue. I think that chemistry is important to an extent but at some point you have to take chance on one. The Red Sox won 2 WS with Manny so obviously Manny is not as big of a problem as the media portrays him.
The Mets aren’t the Red Sox and the Red Sox aren’t the Mets … I’m not sure if it’s fair to directly compare the two.
Even a mets player has reportedly said “Manny isn’t helping the Red Sox win right now.”
Regarding Dunn, I think price is more of a factor than character issues … at least I hope its not “character issues” that are keeping him from the Mets.
True good points but do you agree that chemisty is over-rated?
What’s important about Manny is that he’s 36 with horrible defense, bad knees, and 2 20m options that he would probably want guaranteed in order to ok a trade.
What’s important about Dunn is that he’s a lefty who either k’s, walks, or hits a hr. And the only reason he walks is there’s nobody batting behind him who’s a threat, so the pitchers aren’t scared to put him on and set up a double play since he’s also slower than Brian Schneider. I’d love his 40 hr’s at Shea, but let’s face it, his inflated OBP and sub-.230 BA is not enough of a factor for him to be an impact player.
Nothing to do with Chemistry.
Actually, according to Rotoworld Manny would want a team to decline the options so he could be a free agent (seems strange to me turning down $20 mil, he couldn’t possibly get more as a FA!)
But if that is true….I’d be for dealing for him.
Why would he want the team to decline the options? He’s not very likely to get 20m/yr or more on the open market. He would either want those guaranteed or just sign an extension. Him wanting to turn down 40m doesn’t sound right to me…
Why? He is nuts.
The priates have givin me confidence as a met fan that they will do another dumb trade and deal us some1 of signifacance
It would be a collosal mistake to take on Winn’s salary. We have a huge amount of salary coming off the books after this year. Eating 8 million dollars for an older Chavez next year would just hurt our promising offseason.
no! do not get Winn. Ibanez or Thames will do. Winn had no pop in his bat. we need some pop and and rbi’s from LF. Love what Tatis is doing, but face facts, he’s going to decline eventually. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Guillen hurt his groin this weekend. He’s also had back spasms and hasn’t hit a homer since June. Plus, check this out:
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Volatile Kansas City outfielder Jose Guillen got into a heated clubhouse exchange with pitching coach Bob McClure, knocking over chairs before several Royals separated them prior to Saturday night’s 3-0 loss to Tampa Bay.
Guillen and McClure argued face-to-face, but no punches were thrown. Guillen, who unleashed a profanity-filled tirade against his teammates in May, went 0-for-4 and struck out twice.
Guillen declined to comment on the incident.
“It’s been handled in-house and honestly,” Royals manager Trey Hillman said after the game. “It’s a non-issue. It’s not a big deal. It’s not going to characterize anybody.”
