@hjhjhjh At the time, I too wanted Santana to stay in to at least start the ninth. But I cannot fault either Manuel's faith in the bullpen's ability to get 3 outs before giving up 3 runs nor the idea that they are saving Santana wear and tear so that he is fresh in September and October. I think Manuel and Warthen are managing for the season not just individual games. The decision backfired as concerned that game. I can't blame Manuel for saying he'd make the same move again...I should be a high percentage move if you have any bullpen at all.

i agree with your assesment of the Maine situation...but im going to have disagree with santana...that game against philly was the BIGGEST game of the year up that point....for the team and for santana....he should have at the very least gone out there to start the 9th (especially since we didnt have wagner)....but it worked out in that series and i believe he made up for it in his next start....

LGM and let hope maine is healthy

ok...sorry he's not a "CY Young" guy...but he is pretty damn important to this team...and by the way was going for his 10th win of th season last night....not bad for a number 3 guy in a rotation....

Manuel and Warthen gave very good explanations as to why Maine was removed. Maine was changing his delivery to avoid triggering the pain--was not coming over the top. He was putting strain on his shoulder and arm by doing so. They wanted to make sure he not only did not exacerbate the current problem but didn't compound it with new injuries. That's smart, not "overprotective."

As for pulling Santana after the eighth a couple of games back, they were managing in light of his history at Minnisota and with faith that the bullpen could get 3 outs before giving up three runs. This bullpen had had a streak of several innings without giving up a run not so long ago so you can't really fault them for that---except with 20/20 hindsight.

the difference between Santana and the rest of them (Maine and Pedro)....SANTANA WAS HEALTHY!! Maine and Pedro seem to be dealing with injuries??

another thing. Manuel's "OVERPROTECTION" seemed to pay off with Reyes and Santana. Santana saved the bullpen from being overused and Reyes went back to playing like he was capable of. (remember Manuel took him out in Anaheim after Reyes said he had minor cramp in his hamstring)

look, santana couldnt go 9, and then he goes on radio and said he would if johan asked, are you kidding me

You ever think he did that on purpose to send a bit of a message to Johan? The guy is a great pitcher but he's passive.

Manuel isn't above sending the odd message or 2 through the press

I'd rather have Maine come out early in a game then miss the rest of the season.

I'm a John Maine fan, to be sure. However, I cant help but be concerned about his durabilty now. Last year he should have been an All Star what with the way he was pitching the first half and then just ran out of gas in the 2nd half, although he did step up big-time in the penultimate game of the season vs these pesky Marlins, what a game that was!!

Reading the Post this morning about Maine, Warthen says in referring to the pain in his shoulder , that its "...generally not a serious area" and that it "wasnt a red flag"....

Now I'm definitely not a doctor or anything or pretend to know everything about pitching mechanics, but SHOULDNT this be a red flag?

Lets hope Maine gets some rest at the least and that its nothing serious. With 2 off days in the next week, maybe Jerry and company can juggle some arms around....

LETS GO METS!

MY GOD, manuel is SO FRIGGIN OVERPROTECTIVE ABOUT EVERYTHING. look, santana couldnt go 9, and then he goes on radio and said he would if johan asked, are you kidding me, it was his responsibility, pedro said he wanted to go ahead and pitch, but again he said no, and now maine, if i was john, i was probably start a yelling match and curse him out, and if he suspends you, you lost a game right there cuz he is one of your top pitchers.

velvetfoot, yes since peterson left, it was a problem, cuz peterson gave him a plan of what to do, warthen doesnt do that, peterson leaving negatively affected maine the most, pelfrey was neutral, and warthen positively affected perez the most, pedro and santana dont need it.

i bet willie randolph wouldve trusted his players.

YO JERRY MANUEL, THERE IS SOMETHING CALLED TRUSTING YOUR PLAYERS! EVER HEARD OF IT???
