…Update…1:15 am…
“The Reds and Rays talked Wednesday night about a deal that would send Adam Dunn to Tampa Bay,” writes Jason Stark on ESPN.com, citing sources with knowledge of the discussions.
…Original Post…
In a post to SI.com, Jon Heyman writes,
“The Diamondbacks made a play for Adam Dunn, offering first baseman Chad Tracy.”
However, Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently told reporters in Cincinnati that he had not talked to any one today about Dunn, according to the Cincinnati Inquirer.
Nevertheless, Heyman adds, “Another National League team also is said to have called about Dunn, a slugger who’s drawn surprisingly little interest.”
In the New York Post earlier this week, Joel Sherman wrote, “The Mets did consider Dunn, but his poor defense, historical problems in clutch situations and high strikeout rates have eliminated interest.”
By the way, Heyman also provides information on talks between the Dodgers and White Sox, regarding a shortstop.
…Update…10:30 pm…
According to Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus, the deal, which has been sent to
the Commisioner’s Office, will send Manny Ramirez and cash to the Marlins, who will send Jeremy Hermida to the Pirates, who will send Jason Bay and John Grabow to the Red Sox, while the Pirates will get one prospect from Boston and two prospects from Florida.
…Update…9:10 pm…
…the buzz from pittsburgh is that the Marlins and Red Sox need to get their business in order, while the Pirates keep talks with the Rays at bay, literally…at which point the Sox will need to work out a deal for Jason Bay…what’s more, other players from the Pirates could be involved, including LHP John Grabow…
…Original Post…
According to the Boston Globe, citing one industry source, the Marlins and Red Sox have had talks regarding Manny Ramirez.
Earlier on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, Peter Gammons said, after having talked with people close to the Red Sox, he is convinced that ‘this thing with the Marlins’ and Ramirez will happen.
In a report for SI.com, Jon Heyman writes, “The Phillies and Dodgers are among other teams talking to the Red Sox about a possible blockbuster for Ramirez,” though, “The Marlins are said to be at or near the top of the list of teams pursuing the embattled superstar.”
In a post to Baseball Prospectus, Will Carroll writes, “I’m hearing that a multi-team deal involving Jason Bay and the Florida Marlins is in the ‘final stages.’”
That said, at MLB.com, Jim Moloney writes, “The chances of the two sides reaching an agreement on a trade before Thursday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline appear to be small.”
Earlier today, John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus wrote that the Red Sox are ‘on the verge’ of sending Ramirez to the Marlins in exchange for three players, including 19–year-old OF Mike Stanton, who Gammons recently said is widely considered among the top five prospects in baseball.
According to Jason Stark, at ESPN.com, the Red Sox have asked the Marlins to part with Stanton, as well as Ryan Tucker and either Josh Willingham or Jeremy Hermida.
However, Ken Rosenthal on FoxSports.com cites a Marlins official as saying Stanton will not be included in any such deal.
…people keep asking me why i continue to post about manny when the Mets have no shot of getting him…well, i would say the Marlins potentially acquiring manny will have about as much of an impact on the Mets and their effort to win the division as any deal the Mets could make on their own…
…by the way, that image of manny makes me laugh every single time i use it…it’s like he’s in such awe of himself that he is, at the moment, part of the audience…hilarious…
The Marlins (57–51) took two out of three from the Mets (58–50) following a 7 to 5 win in Miami tonight.
For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.
- The Mets took the early lead in the top of the 1st inning when Jose Reyes singled and then later scored on a David Wright double play.
- Brian Schneider made a nice tag at the plate on Dan Uggla to keep the one run lead. Keith Hernandez expressed how he really felt about Uggla’s slide, calling it “the slide du jour and it stinks!”
- Mike Pelfrey continued his strong pitching through three innings. However, it all came crashing down when he surrendered five runs on six hits in the fourth. Pelfrey’s line for the night: 4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 K. Ouch!
- I agree with Matt’s statement about how annoying it is to watch games in Florida. Although hearing what some of these fans yell is pretty amusing.
- Carlos Muniz was impressive in two innings to keep the Mets in the game. He struck out four in two innings pitched.
- Muniz’s effort turned out to be big when, in the top of the 7th, Damion Easley jacked a three-run home run to cut the lead by one run.
- Duaner Sanchez seemed to get back on track with only nine pitches thrown in the bottom half of the 7th.
- Uggla killed any hope of a Mets comeback with a towering two-run shot off of the recently struggling Joe Smith in the bottom of the 8th.
- With two outs in the ninth, again the Mets almost came back with three straight hits, but Jose Reyes flied out to center field to end the game.
This was a big win for the Marlins confidence, and if they somehow land Manny Ramirez, I will be legitimately concerned. The Mets now fall out of first place by a half a game following the Phillies win over the Nationals tonight.
The ‘Metsies,’ as Keith likes to call them, are off tomorrow and head to Houston to start a three-game series on Friday. Pedro Martinez returns to the mound to face Brandon Backe.
Earlier this week, in a report for the Boston Globe, citing a team official, Nick Cafardo wrote that the
Mets would be willing to part with RHP Scott Schoeneweis if they could obtain an outfielder.
According to Cafardo, the Tigers could be interested in Schoeneweis.
…there had been an idea floating around that the Mets could trade shoney to the Tigers for an outfielder, than acquire one of the many relief pitchers on the market to fill in the bullpen…
…however, it just occurred to me, that by the Tigers acquiring RHP Kyle Farnsworth from the Yankees for Ivan Rodriguez, they must no longer be seeking a relief pitcher, like schoeneweis…
That said, according to a recent post from Dan Graziano at the Star-Ledger, the Yankees, Tigers, Rangers and Rays have all talked to the Mets about Schoeneweis.
…so, i guess the above model, which includes the Mets getting an outfielder, could still be in play…
Tagged Scott Schoeneweis |According to Buster Olney on ESPN.com, “The Red Sox are
engaged in serious conversations to trade Manny Ramirez to the Florida Marlins, as well as other teams.”
Naturally, according to MLB.com, Ramirez spotted Olney’s report while walking by a TV in the clubhouse prior to tonight’s game, and begin sarcastically hugging people goodbye.
…Update…6:57 pm…
Meanwhile, according John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus, citing ‘multiple baseball sources,’ the Red Sox are ‘on the verge’ of sending Ramirez to the Marlins in exchange for three players, including OF Mike Stanton.
…enter your, Mike Stanton the old relief pitcher joke here…
…Update…7:10 pm…
In a post to ESPN.com, Jason Stark writes, “Officials from several teams theorized Wednesday that if the Red Sox trade away Manny, they would target Jason Bay as a right-handed bat to replace him.”
…Update…7:20 pm…
…i guess the idea here, from what stark is suggesting, would be Bay to the Red Sox, Ramirez to the Marlins, and, i assume, prospects from both to the Pirates…
…interestingly, Mark Healey made this very suggestion for the Mets earlier in the week on Gotham Baseball Magazine…of course, such a deal would needed to have included Fernando Martinez and Jon Niese, and so, you know how that goes…
For what it’s worth, according to a poll on MetsBlog.com, 86 percent of people who responded said they would not trade Martinez and Niese in a deal for Ramirez.
…Update…7:52 pm…
Earlier on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, Peter Gammons said, after having talked with people close to the Red Sox, he is convinced that ‘this thing with the Marlins’ and Ramirez will happen.
As Gammons pointed out, the Red Sox won a World Series after letting go of Nomar Garciaparra, they won a World Series after letting go of Pedro Martinez, and they believe they can win a World Series without Ramirez.
Later, also on Baseball Tonight, Buster Olney said, ‘The divorce is coming, and both sides realize that.’
…Update…8:20 pm…
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports that Marlins OF Jeremy Hermida would likely end up with the Pirates, in such a three-team deal between the Red Sox and Marlins involving Bay and Ramirez.

…there is increasing buzz suggesting that a) the Pirates will trade Jason Bay before tomorrow’s 4 pm Trade Deadline, and b) the Rays are the most likely suitor…though, the A’s, Braves, Cardinals and D’Backs are still interested it seems…
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “The Pirates and Tampa Bay continue to discuss Bay, a process that became deep yesterday, and two prospect names known to be in the mix on the Rays’ end are shortstop Reid Brignac and pitcher Jeremy Hellickson.”
…the buzz from tampa suggests that brignac is a given, and both teams agree he’ll be swapped, but the hold up appears to be issues involving specific pitchers…
…my guess is that the Pirates want one of tampa’s big fish, and the Rays will not yet part with him, or them…
…it’s quite clear, at this point, that if the Mets are not going to trade Fernando Martinez, or specifically Jon Niese, then bay is out of their league, because it appears a floor for bay has been set…and so, i think i may turn my attention back towards the reliever’s market, because, like Jason Stark said earlier, the Mets may wait and see what bats clear waivers in August, which, if you recall, i suggested might happen on Monday…
…Update…6:30 pm…
To follow the Bay talks, check out Dejan Kovacevic’s blog for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, where he is essentially live blogging his research.
At ESPN.com, Jayson Stark is reporting that the Mariners continue to ask for Mets pitcher Jon Niese and a second
prospect for Raul Ibanez, and unless the price drops, the Mets will pass.
According to Stark, instead, the Mets may simply wait, not make a move, and see what bats become available on the waiver wire in August.
Comparably, the Mariners are asking the Cubs for Felix Pie and a second prospect for Ibanez.
Meanwhile, Stark writes that the Mets are not looking at pitchers like Jarrod Washburn or Tim Redding, rather power arms if anyone in that caliber becomes available.
According to Buster Olney at ESPN.com, the Yankees have acquired Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers for Kyle Farnsworth.
Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald is reporting that the Marlins are closer to acquiring Arthur Rhodes from the Mariners.
According to Spencer, the price tag for Rhodes’s services will only cost a mid-level prospect.
In 35 relief appearances this season, Rhodes is 2-0 with a 3.83 ERA.
…added to by Matthew Cerrone…
According to Jason Stark at ESPN.com, however, the Marlins are telling people that a deal for Rhodes is not done.
