Buzz: The Manny Ramirez to the Marlins Saga
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 30, 2008 10:30 pm

Update10:30 pm

According to Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus, the deal, which has been sent to the Commisioner’s Office, will send Manny Ramirez and cash to the Marlins, who will send Jeremy Hermida to the Pirates, who will send Jason Bay and John Grabow to the Red Sox, while the Pirates will get one prospect from Boston and two prospects from Florida.

Update9:10 pm

…the buzz from pittsburgh is that the Marlins and Red Sox need to get their business in order, while the Pirates keep talks with the Rays at bay, literally…at which point the Sox will need to work out a deal for Jason Bay…what’s more, other players from the Pirates could be involved, including LHP John Grabow

Original Post

According to the Boston Globe, citing one industry source, the Marlins and Red Sox have had talks regarding Manny Ramirez.

Earlier on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, Peter Gammons said, after having talked with people close to the Red Sox, he is convinced that ‘this thing with the Marlins’ and Ramirez will happen.

In a report for SI.com, Jon Heyman writes, “The Phillies and Dodgers are among other teams talking to the Red Sox about a possible blockbuster for Ramirez,” though, “The Marlins are said to be at or near the top of the list of teams pursuing the embattled superstar.”

In a post to Baseball Prospectus, Will Carroll writes, “I’m hearing that a multi-team deal involving Jason Bay and the Florida Marlins is in the ‘final stages.’”

That said, at MLB.com, Jim Moloney writes, “The chances of the two sides reaching an agreement on a trade before Thursday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline appear to be small.”

Earlier today, John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus wrote that the Red Sox are ‘on the verge’ of sending Ramirez to the Marlins in exchange for three players, including 19–year-old OF Mike Stanton, who Gammons recently said is widely considered among the top five prospects in baseball.

According to Jason Stark, at ESPN.com, the Red Sox have asked the Marlins to part with Stanton, as well as Ryan Tucker and either Josh Willingham or Jeremy Hermida.

However, Ken Rosenthal on FoxSports.com cites a Marlins official as saying Stanton will not be included in any such deal.

people keep asking me why i continue to post about manny when the Mets have no shot of getting him…well, i would say the Marlins potentially acquiring manny will have about as much of an impact on the Mets and their effort to win the division as any deal the Mets could make on their own

…by the way, that image of manny makes me laugh every single time i use it…it’s like he’s in such awe of himself that he is, at the moment, part of the audience…hilarious

    keep the updates coming matt

  2. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

all i have to say is damion easily

  3. Santana57 says:

I agree Dirtysanchez, keep ‘em comin.

  4. mrmustseetv says:

Why the hell are we not in on the Manny Ramirez discussion? Are we really going to let the damn Marlins land him?

Look, I’m sure Omar is trying to land reinforcements, but only Fernando Martinez should be untouchable.

If Omar hasn’t picked up the phone and offered Jon Niese, Dan Murphy and Eddie Kunz for Manny or something along those lines, then I’m disappointed in Omar.

    Niese is a #4 starter.

Murphy is more of a DH.

Kunz may be a closer, but his walks may also mean he’s more of a middle reliever.

    UGH!

    • Because you need to trade Fernando Martinez, and specifically Jon Niese.

      Interested?

      • mrmustseetv says:

I’d trade and combination of Niese, Murphy, Kunz, Rustich, Parnell, Carp, Evans.

None of them are going to be stars.

        Niese is a #4.

        Murphy is a DH.

Rustich is all of the place.

Parnell seems like he may be more of a reliever.

        Carp is a DH.

Evans looks like the kid from the Bad News Bear.

I’d give up any four of them to get Manny. Yes, I said 4 of them. I only wouldn’t trade Fernando or Wilmer.

      • dwright012 says:

        Yes

      • danlx13 says:

        I would do it

      • therealsince86 says:

These guys are Crazy Matt. There is a guy saying we should trade Fmart, Niese, Kunz and Parnell for 2 moths of Manny. This is insane. All because the “know” that these guys won’t be anything. Like Manny in LF in Shea is some birth right to the WS.

    • You’ve copy-pasted this post 4 times now, and while I agree with some of it, come on, man, you didn’t just write a new gospel.

I don’t know that giving definitive analyses of such raw prospects is really fair, especially in the case of Murphy, but I agree that we should be in on these Manny chats.

    • letsgomets942 says:

I agree 100%! Omar at least try! This is making me sick to my stomach. Time is running out!! We better get someone soon.

      • danlx13 says:

F mart should b the only untouchable prospect for the mets.. if a combinations of the others could get manny then DO IT

    • dave27 says:

Do the Mets know that you know exactly what all of their prospects…who I imagine you’ve never actually seen…are destined to become? They could really use you! If they knew they’d trade these bums!

Can I at least use your time machine?

      • mrmustseetv says:

Nice Dave. Love the sarcastic wit.

By the way, I have seen the following prospects:

        1. Ike Davis
        2. Rees Havens
        3. Brad Holt
        4. Fernando Martinez
        5. Mike Carp
        6. Shawn Bowman
        7. Nick Evans
        8. Bobby Parnell.

So if that then allows me to speak about why I think they shold be traded for the best bat available then yes I’m saying my peace.

I haven’t seen Niese, but he’s not Kazmir so trade him if it lands Manny.

And you can borrow my time machine any time just make sure you bring it back with the same amount of gas.

    • samp says:

Because he sucks. If the Mets think Adam Dunn is a defensive liability than we shouldn’t even mention Ramirez’s name. Worst. Defender. In. The. League.

  5. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

I agree with Omar, it’s not worth giving up our big chips for 2 months of Manny.

Let him go and be miserable in Miami. The Marlins will score more runs but will still have a terrible D and overall pitching staff. (altho Josh Johnson and Sanchez helps them).

    • danlx13 says:

“it’s not worth giving up our big chips for 2 months of Manny.”

The difference is..is that manny could lead the mets to the world series, while anyone else can not. My opinion is that the mets have no shot of going to the world series with the team they have now. even with someone like ibanez i dont think they can make it.

      • therealsince86 says:

If they can’t make it with Ibanez then they can’t make it with Manny. The problem will STILL be the BP. Just like it will be for the Marlins and the Phillies.

    • VegasMet says:

I’m for any deal with Miami as long as they trade Willingham away.
As long as I don’t have to hear the Marlin play-by-play guy continually refer to him as “Hammer.” “Hammer’s on first,” “Hammer throws it to the cutoff man,”"Hammer’s on deck,”…I’m not exactly sure why that drives me up a wall, but it does.Get him gone!!!

  6. mets2010 says:

i wouldnt be surpised if as this deal gets closer, the mets come into play willing to part with f-mart, i think less chance if the marlins are on the verge but should the phillies come close the mets will be right there cause that would put them over the top. i would take manny any day on the mets it would be a boost that would take us to the top

  7. Nightlife says:

Like I said in the other thread Will Carroll also said that Santana to the Red Sox this winter was “in its final stages”.

  8. shea_guevara says:

Has it occurred to anyone that the Marlins rumors are an effort to stir up interest among Florida’s chief competition, ie, the Mets and Phils?

I mean, assuming there have been talks have taken place between the two teams, I’m sure those talks are in good faith. But maybe the reason we’re hearing so much about them is to try and make other teams freak out and overpay for a two month rental.

  9. Ryn05 says:

Mike Stanton top 5? Is that a joke?

  10. ou812jay8 says:

The Mets shoud get involved with the Manny talks if for nothing else than to drive the price up for the Marlins.

  11. Ryn05 says:

    Mike Stanton < Wilmer Flores.

  12. MetsAllTheWay says:

Earlier on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, Peter Gammons said, after having talked with people close to the Red Sox, he is convinced that ‘this thing with the Marlins’ and Ramirez will happen.

Gammons is a good analyst and all but I’ve heard that way too many times. Manny is defintely going ______. And nothing ever happens.

    • dave27 says:

Gammons still owes us all for reporting that “Olerud and Baerga to Baltimore for Palmeiro and Alomar is a done deal” in 1998.

Since then, more and more of the same.

  13. dave27 says:

I guess I am the first to realize the Marlins are fluorishing without the questionable presence of Miguel Cabrera. Manny is like the sideshow Cabrera could only hope to be.

You want to add this knucklehead to this young team, where he’ll undermine everything their manager is doing with his poor example and sloppy play?

Be my guest – I’m not worried. This is as bad a fit as I’ve ever seen. You’re adding a me-first aging superstar to an overachieving group of kids. I guess the Marlins see a cheap way to sell alot of tickets.

    • Gina says:

I agree, and I’d love for Hermida to be out of division and out of the league. I have no problem with teams in our division making stupid trades.

  14. ESPN also reported that the Yanees were “ready to trade LaTroy Hawkins” after he got traded.

    • dave27 says:

“Ready to trade Latroy Hawkins” most be the most needless phrase in baseball history.

  15. dwright012 says:

    ball game

    • SadClownGoodMets says:

I have faith that the offense can get the job done (especially when/if Church comes back).
I have faith that the starters can give quality outings (especially in a short playoff series).
I have no faith in the bullpen to backup their teammates (regardless of who is in).

      • Gina says:

Unfortunately I agree with all of this.

      • Nails says:

I agree with the no faith in the bullpen, but I’d feel a lot better if everyone not named Aaron or Duaner never pitched the 8th inning again.

Sanchez has had a few good outings in a row (3 I think). Heilman can be iffy, but is mostly solid.

Everyone else is like throwing darts blindfolded. Who cares about Manny? I want one (maybe two) major league bullpen arms coming here by 4 pm.

  16. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

says alot about so called analysts saying a manny trade would never happen

    • dwright012 says:

or 90% of the people on the comment section.. who also tout that we should do nothing since we’re in 1st place..

      ooops

  17. ou812jay8 says:

I guess Will Carroll is saying that Jacobs is going to go to the Giants in a deal for Bengie Molina.

  18. Church4prez says:

This outfield and bullpen sucks. now with maine hurt, we are in big trouble

  19. MetfaninFL says:

I’m not really sure why anyone is nervous about the Fish getting Manny. If the Fish miss the playoffs its not going to be due to a lack of runs scored. If the Marlins added a serious closer I’d be nervous but Manny just gives them more of what they have. HR Offense and No Defense.

  20. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

i love how gammons says the deal will be talked through tomorrow and is unlikely to happen

  21. Church4prez says:

gammons is a dick and a sox homer anyway

  22. jlukes says:

Deal is done — pending commish approval

Red Sox getting Jason Bay and John Grabow; the Marlins acquiring Ramirez, cash and a prospect from the Red Sox and the Pirates picking up Jeremy Hermida, two prospects from the Marlins and one from Boston.

    • stickguy says:

cool. I love when big deals, especially multi team, actually come down.

    • Church4prez says:

its not done you fool. its going till tommorrow

      • jlukes says:

wanna bet money? The deal is done and on the commish’s desk — it will be approved overnight or early tomorrow, but the trade talks are done and the conditions have been agreed upon

      • there’s really no need to call people names

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

You’re talking about a child here. Being one, he doesn’t have the maturity to participate in this type of forum when other posters don’t agree with him. Emotions always rule with someone of his young age.

        • kingman 26 says:

Church4Prez is the prototypical troll, who comes here all day every day and does absolutely nothing except call people names and post idiocy again and again and again and again.

It is long past time that everyone–myself included–starts ignoring his absolute drivel.

  23. I don’t care what anyone says – with Manny on the Fish, the Mets can no longer be regarded as faves to win the division unless they do something to seriously upgrade something between now and 4 PM tomorrow.

    • imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

      dunn and david weathers. lol

    • Church4prez says:

MAYBE THEY SHOULD BRING UP ALL OF THEIR HOF PROSPECTS

    • Church4prez says:

there are too many parts for it to be done. manny must waive his clause too

      • jlukes says:

Manny signed the papers waiving his no trade clause this afternoon.

Everything is done — don’t know why you are in such denial

      • The ESPN report about that 24-hr no-trade waive deadline was completely false, and they pulled that story.

        • jason277 says:

Just get Adam Dunn on the cheap. He has a .400 OBP and will hit some home runs. Sure he strikes out a lot, and his average sucks. Who cares. The team doesn’t need a hitter with a high average.

Tatis will come crashing back to Earth, and we’ll be stuck holding our dicks.

        • Mets17 says:

          I agree with Jason 100%

  24. Mookie1986 says:

I’m stunned that this is going to happen. Absolutely stunned.

Stunned at the fact that the Marlins of all teams are the ones in the lead for his services, and stunned that the Sox… after keeping him through all the crap… are going to part ways with the man primarily responsible for getting this franchise a WS title after decades of nothing.

    Stunned.

  25. krispy644 says:

MANNY HAS NOT BEEN OFFICIALLY TRADED YET. BE PATIENT LOL

but unlike Omar, the Marlins are doing something to improve their club in any way possible.

  26. whatdatmean says:

    enough is enough here!!!!
reality is, if manny goes to the marlins, we realistically could lose the division…possibly miss the playoffs
marlins would have a very potent offense with a solid rotation…we could lose the season right here

why? bc mets fans dont want to lose prospects
    thats laughable….forget bargains…this is serious.
manny could endup on either the phils, dodgers, or marlins…all of which would put up way more offense than we can
not to mention that our mets are based around the 2 streakiest hitters in all of baseball in beltran and delgado.

with the exception of fmart, back up the triuck…
hey pitts, redsox, and even the tigers…give me a slugger and have your pick
niese, parnell, moviel, carp, murphy, evans, kunz….
beltran, delgado, easley, castro, show, heilman, feliciano
knock yourself out! make a good package…lets get something done here.

ugh….this is worse than watching the Santana saga!!!!

  27. jason277 says:

The problem now is that if Omar doesn’t make a move, even if that’s the right decision, it makes the Mets look bad. Florida went out and got Manny, even Philly got Blanton, though he is questionable.

If the Mets stand pat and don’t make the playoffs, there will be a lot of pissed off people looking back at the deadline.

  28. Darth Manuel says:

This stinks.. No bay, no nady, no manny, no Reliever.. Nothing!

  29. pbelli01 says:

Keep the updates coming. Ive come to look at this blog as a great baseball blog, that centers on the Mets. Now, I mean I dont need to hear about the Marlins and Red Sox in Mid June, but if a blockbuster is about to go down, even involving a team not in our division, by all means, keep posting. We all appreciate it.

  30. Church4prez says:

    SIGN BONDS NOW!!!!!

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

      Why?

      • Cos22 says:

How did I know something like this would happen? Years and years of the Manny teasing, and he ends up on the damn Marlins of all teams!! Fun life being a Met fan sometimes…………..

  31. whatdatmean says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if we dont get manny or bay….
    we SHOULD sign Bonds…
especially if manny goes to the NL

    we need an impact bat

Omar will never do it, but i would prefer to have
manny + casey over delgado + RP + prospect
    or
manny + crisp over beltran + RP

anyday….streaky hitters like beltran and delgado are the bain of this teams existance

    • ghobot says:

there are no reports that say he is even ready for baseball activity and he may be in the process of being colluded, so your pleas for him dont make any sense.

  32. Darth Manuel says:

Yup,, If our prospects are so untouchable then the only option is to sign Bonds. We need a bat.. He is a big big bat and he’s free.

  33. Knuckles99 says:

Marlins 2 WS. Mets 2 WS. We are the most horrifically run big market franchise.

  34. whatdatmean says:

even worse…rumor mill has that the Marlins are actively trying to land all 3 of the following…

    RHODES-for mid prospect[s]
    MOLINA-for jacobs+low prospect
    MANNY-for hermida + prospects

and, by selling off their players…they have the minor league depth to do it

    hanley-ss
    cantu-1b
    molina-c
    manny-lf
    uggla-2b
    willingham-rf
    ross/maybin-cf
    helms/amezaga-3b
    SP-johnson, nolasco, olsen, miller, sanchez,[volstad]
    RP-miller, hendrickson, pinto,lindstrom, rhodes, gregg

thats a tough team to beat….
just to keep up we would have to make a big splash…no…a HUGE splash

cmon omar…hope you got a rabit up your sleeve

    • Darth Manuel says:

Why would the Giants want Jacobs.. They have a big time prospect playing first base right now.

    • therealsince86 says:

We would not need a huge splash. We would just play our butt off and pick up a piece here or there. I still think the Marlins will struggle with the schedule they have.

  35. whatdatmean says:

bc that big time 1b can also play the OF…
jacobs would hit 30+ hrs there and supply a power bat they are missing, while adding a prospect as well…
building off of rowand, bowker, lewis, and jacobs is a nice start
plus they have a 3b + ss prospect that is just about ready to go.
molina has 1 year left on his contract, so a few years of a cheap jacobs + prospect[s] is a nice return

  36. ghobot says:

i hate this time of year….

  37. ghobot says:

why is everyone so sure that manny wont use his no trade clause?

    • fongulalou says:

Because one would think that would have been addressed
before getting this deep into talks and wasting all this time.
Thats omars m.o. not really that of other g.m.s.

  38. bkfitz says:

    Omar, please get someone.

  39. metphan says:

Why do the Mets have “no shot” at getting Manny?

The Mets will rue this day, when they allowed fear and public opinion to get the best of a sound baseball move.

    • metphan says:

After this I don’t even know if I’m going to watch anymore.

Declining to even pursue Manny…. there’s just no excuse.
