Buzz: Manny to Marlins, 50-50 Chance
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 31, 2008 10:47 am

Jason Stark on ESPN.com believes there is a 50–50 chance that Manny Ramirez actually gets traded, while Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald believes it is less than 50 percent.

i think what is pretty clear here is that a) the Red Sox and Marlins have essentially agreed to a framework for a deal that would send Manny Ramirez to the Marlins in exchange for Jeremy Hermida, while b) the Pirates will include Jason Bay, and maybe even LHP John Grabow, who could be going to the Marlins, but they will require a certain level of prospect to be returned in the deal…and so, today, the three sides will haggle about whether to include Ryan Tucker or Mike Stanton…meaning, we’ll have to read endless reports suggesting this guy, no that guy, no this guy, it’ll happen, no it won’t, yes it will, over and over until 4 pm…

i’ll say this, if the Marlins end up acquiring LHP John Grabow and OF Manny Ramirez, i will officially become concerned…

  1. Marlins just got Rhodes for Gaby Hernandez. Remember him?

  2. Santana57 says:

If the Marlins reel in Manny, do you think Omar will be forced to get Ibanez/Bay/Dunn/DeJesus.

  3. ToastyJoe says:

How about swooping in and offering Niese for Bay just to queer this whole deal?

    • I’d rather give F-Mart for Bay. I know that’s crazy, but I don’t have a whole lot of faith in F-Mart, and want to hold onto Niese like grim death.

      • metsrbest says:

You’re not crazy. F-Mart is just the newer version of Alex Escobar. Alot of promise, 5 tool guy, but injured all the time.

      • astoriametsfan72 says:

You don’t have faith in a 19 year old player who is playing competitive baseball in a league where the competition is 4 or 5 years older than him? You gotta look past the stats and look at the tools. Martinez has the goods to be a superstar player like Wright or Reyes. At 19 he already has tremendous power and a sweet swing. He’s only going to get better.

You don’t trade him for a a player a tick above league average and is 30 years old.

        • ToastyJoe says:

Am I the only one who has no idea what “career isolated power” is?

        • Joseisbetter says:

haha, Toasty, I have no clue. That is hysterical…

        • ToastyJoe,

It’s another useless stat, probably made up by ESPN. In the world of satellite TV and internet, we should all know everything about every team and their players, because the information is available. All I need to know is what I see with my own two eyes.

Let me ask you this question. If these stats were so meaningful, why even send scouts to games? Shouldn’t the numbers tell it all? Isolated power. HA!

        • astoriametsfan72 says:

I guess ‘career isolated power’ is hitting 400+ foot home runs off the shed in deep right during spring training.

I guess ‘isolated power’ is what had all the scouts drooling over him during the futures game 3 weeks ago.

          And he’s 19 years old.

Once again, stat heads looking at numbers and not seeing the talent. AT this age you can evaluate talent by looking at raw numbers in a vaccuum. Watching the kid play is much more instructive than looking at a stat sheet on ESPN..com.

        • ToastyJoe says:

I love how he said “You realize his career isolated power is around 140, right?” I was like “ahhhh…..I see. That explains everything.”

        • ToastyJoe says:

          I bet you didn’t know F-Mart’s ODWPS is 56.68. That’s a good 1.565 above average.

        • GravediggerHebner says:

Isolated Power is who I make my check out to every month to keep the electricity on.

        • Isn’t Isolated Power the old sign they used to have out behind the left center field fence at Shea?

        • astoriametsfan72 says:

Toasty Joe – you said “I bet you didn’t know F-Mart’s ODWPS is 56.68. That’s a good 1.565 above average”

That’s right – he’s above average at 19 years old against players in a level where the competition is 4 or 5 years older than him.

        • ravi3 says:

Isolated power is a fairly straight forward metric: At the simplest form, its measures extra base hits/AB.

The basic formula for ISOP is SLG-BA. This function essentially eliminates singles from the equation, as it is not given any weight in the formula for SLG, whereas a 2B counts twice, a 3B counts three times, and a HR 4 times.

Pecota has a variation to ISOP. The equation is simply: (doubles + triples + 3*HR)/AB. The logic being that a double is one extra base, a triple 2 extra bases, and a HR 3 extra bases. However, you’ll notice that both doubles and triples are given the same weight. This is because Pectoa researchers feel that the difference between doubles and triples is more a result of speed then power, and after watching Jose play for the past 5 years, I think that is a valid conclusion.

        • ToastyJoe says:

astoria – sounds good, but the only problem is I made that stat up. However, if ODWPS (which I made up my mashing my hand against the keyboard)is an actual stat, I would be most amused.

        • astoriametsfan72 says:

the problem is that this stat would be comparing Martinez against other players in league that are considerably older and physically more mature than him. They are bigger and stronger because of the age. They are naturally going to have more power because of that factor.

Again, these statistics don’t exist in a vacuum and it makes it difficult to make any sort of meaningful, conclusive evaluation of a player so young like F-Mart based on stats alone.

        • gameball says:

FMart’s WAD tops out at a mere 4.267, which projects to just a 37 SAC at the major league level.

Best to trade him while his SVEUM is high.

  4. astoriametsfan72 says:

But Manny watching Manny run down flyballs in Dolphin Stadium could be entertaining. Their OF defense would really suck it an pitchers park

  5. Santana57 says:

ESPN 1050, Mets and Yankees are interested in starter Kyle Lohse. Mets are considering calling up Eddie Kunz if they cannot get a reliever.

Thanks for that radio link, Matt.

  6. dwright012 says:

Welcome to the concerned party Matt… the water’s just fine.. come on in

  7. AngryFan says:

    Marlins acquired Rhodes

    *SIGH*

    • Are you kidding? They can have him – he’s brutal. Not a big game pitcher at all. Did you see him last nite?

      • astoriametsfan72 says:

he was awful last night and couldn’t get outs. And he was facing all lefties. It was pathetic. Rhodes isn’t as good as Feliciano or Shoenweiss.

    • metsrbest says:

That “SIGH” I hope is a sigh of relief that the Mets didn’t acquire that bum

    • Wally Backman says:

I am very concerned about our pitching staff. Our bullpen looks horrible and I’m convinced that Maine is seriously hurt. Pedro can’t be counted on, El duque will never see a MLB mound again, Pelfrey is tired and we aren’t going to be obtaining anyone. Although they have overperformed the likes of Tatis, Chavez and Easley aren’t going to carry us into the playoffs. Church’s injury still makes me suck how it was handled and still being handled. He may not even play again this year.

      • metsrbest says:

I’m concerned too. But I don’t think there are any difference making starters or relievers available. I’d love to get Manny, but i’m not sure he is worth F-Mart/Niese. I’d love to get Ibanez, but he definitely is not worth F-Mart/Niese. I think you’ll see Kunz up here to help the pen and if he pitches well for his next few outings, Niese will be up too.

      • ravi3 says:

        Is that you, Chicken Little?

  8. metsrbest says:

Don’t look now Matt, but you should already BE concerned about the Marlins. After 100 or so games they are not going away, with or without Manny.

  9. CaseStreet says:

Pitching wins games. In Omar we Trust!

  10. Darth Manuel says:

We are over valuing our prospects big time. Mulvey and Humber sure look dominant in triple A.

Lets face it Omar is scared to make another deadline trade. He will forever be known for the worst deadline trade in history and we are paying for it.

    • metsfan101589 says:

mulvey has pitched in some bad luck it appears, but humber is a bust and minny is trying to use him as a reliever now.

Obviously gomez is playing ok there. And Guerra is in high A ball with a winning record, but a bad ERA

This deal is most likely the reason other GM’s are reluctant to make a trade with us.

      • metsrbest says:

Carlos Gomez: .256 BA .289 OBP .354 SLG. 100 Strikeouts and 15 walks in 400 AB’s. He has been awful offensively so far.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Acquiring Luis Castillo for 2 forgettable minor leaguers was the worst deadline trade in history?

    • bvaz says:

I know. That Zito deal he didn’t make a couple years ago really killed us.

    • ravi3 says:

What are you talking about scared? There is no difference maker to be had. It is absolutely idiotic to make a deal for the sake of making one. If you can’t get a guy that you KNOW will upgrade the team, may as well stick with what has worked so far.

Trading Martinez would be an absolute mistake for several reasons…One, being the fact that he is a 19 yr old succeeding in AAA. Two, (which can also be seen as a reason to move him) FMart has yet to play to his abilities, due to his injuries. It is arguable that there is still another gear at this point. Three, if you are in fact going to deal him, at least let him build his value up more. Give him time at AA to show everyone what he can do. He should be better than the 20-25th best prospect.

Neise on the other hand, I’m open to moving in the right deal.

  11. the_other_matt says:

“Jason Stark on ESPN.com believes there is a 50–50 chance that Manny Ramirez actually gets traded”

I love it when Stark goes out on a limb like that.

  12. bvaz says:

This is the first report that has actually made sense to me. All the talk last night of a deal already being sent to the commissioners office or that it was all but done just didn’t make sense.
Manny is one of the most frustrating players to have to deal with but his production has always made it worth it. The Sox know that this is the last year they will need to deal with it, but his production while still good is not what it used to be.
This will be a last minute decision by the ownership on whether they actually want to pull the trigger on a deal.
Last night, I was saying there is no chance. Now I think there is definitely some chance. I’d agree with the less than 50% chance but probably not far from that number.

  13. moogman says:

Listen – we only have to worry about US – not the Marlins. Frankly, the only team I need to concern myself with (other than NYM) is Philadelphia. Whether we finish first or fourth – we HAVE to finish in front of them.

But hey, the Marlins win it all every five years – looks like they could be right on time….

  14. christian warrior says:

    Officially concerned? You think?

They will have acquired Manny Ramirez, Rhodes, Grabow, and perhaps Bengie Molina. They will have essentially shored up all of their holes. Many would begin to consider them the frontrunners in the NL east.
