Buzz: Minaya itching to make a Deal
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 31, 2008 11:29 am

In an update to his blog for SI.com, Jon Heyman writes:

“Competing GMs say Omar Minaya is ‘itching’’ to do a deal…However, a lot of Mets people want to hold onto their top prospects…Minaya is spending more time on the relief situation.”

from what i can gather, minaya may be turning his attention away from a significant upgrade, which will cost a quality prospect, and instead could return to the idea of just locking down specific holes on the team, such as a legitimate, defensive replacement for Carlos Delgado, and a power bat for the bench, while swapping out relief pitchers to keep the bullpen fresh…

…also, the Mets do not seem eager to push for a starting outfielder, a) because they believe in Fernando Tatis, for now, and b) trust that players like Kevin Millar or Marlon Byrd will end being available on the waiver wire…

…in fact, the team’s desire to acquire an outfielder likely has more to do with Ryan Church, than it does with tatis

Um, eh, um, scratch it — lightly.

  2. krispy644 says:

just do something Omar. Marlins are not playing around lol

defensive replacement and a reliever will do. The price to get someone like Ibanez is ridiculous. Probably the reason is because M’s are pissed that they have to rebuild lol

  3. Santana57 says:

What would other Mets people have to do with Omar making a deal. He’s the GM. Get Ibanez in NY, please.

All ESPN is talking about is the damn Yankees.

    • mikey_FF says:

What do you want him to trade for Ibanez?

      • ssor1005 says:

Unless he offers two of our top prospects, there is absolutely no reason for the M’s to trade Ibanez. In other words, don’t get him.

        • mikey_FF says:

That was what my question was leading to. Thank you for saving me the aggravation.

    • napes22 says:

Why would we want a 36 year old rental who is on the decline in his career. He isn’t a good fit. There is nothing wrong with not making a trade.

I’m glad you’re not our GM – apparently you’d make a trade for the sake of making a trade. Who cares what the Yankees do.

    • Mingo says:

Who cares what ESPN says. That doesn’t make the team better or not. And from what I can see, the Yankees traded a 100 mph flame thrower for a has been catcher.

    • The Slider says:

We don’t need no stinking Ibanez.

    • mikepelfreyismyguy says:

yankees are not making the playoffs. i pick the rays to win the division, the red sox to the wild card, the yankees crying at home, and the mets in the world series, losing in 5 to the angels.

  4. Darth Manuel says:

He should of made a deal a long time ago. the second Alou and Church got injured we should of picked up a big bat. But now we’re stuck with an outfield of Chavez.tatis and beltran. and a bullpen thats falling apart. Hooray for Omar.. Great work guy

    • mikey_FF says:

But what did you want him to get a long time ago, when so many teams are in the race, and for who?

      • SadClownGoodMets says:

Too many people make stupid blanket comments without backing them up at all…..but that’s how it’ll always be, because people think things are so amazingly easy in hindsight.

        • mikey_FF says:

Amazing how people can’t see the big picture.

        • Darth Manuel says:

Whats this big picture you talk of? I’ve been waiting 22 years for the big picture Prophecy to pay off.

        • mikey_FF says:

Just answer a simple question. What exactly do you want to trade from our current roster and minor league system and for who?

After you tell me that… explain how that effects the major league roster for 09.

        • Darth Manuel says:

It would take FMART 5 years to reach the level of Jason Bay. Did you look at the package the Bucs might accept for Bay. We could easily match that and without giving up Niese.

        • mikey_FF says:

Really? What player on the current MAJOR LEAGUE ROSTER to we have to give to them that matches Hermida?

After you realize that there is not player like that for us to give them … you’ll realize that we don’t have what it takes to pull off such a trade, regardless of how long it takes for F-Mart to succeed in the majors.

Tell me how we could “easily match that without giving up Niese”.

        • Darth Manuel says:

Hermida is what? 290. 20 homers annually. We can’t put a package together that matches that?

Parnell, Martinez, Carp, would be a much better package than Hermida.

        • mikey_FF says:

Yet you just said F-Mart won’t be producing for 5 years. If the Pirates are getting a player who is young and cheap and hits 20 homers now … plus MORE … why on Earth would F-Mart, who won’t be doing that for a few years equal that?

No … we really can’t put something together that matches that.

        • Darth Manuel says:

Pirates have no interest in a win now philosophy.. So waiting a few years until FMART matures would be fine by them. Tabata is a prime example or their mentality. Plus FMART is much closer to producing than Tabata is.

        • mikey_FF says:

They already got Tabata. Obviously they are looking for an immediate impact player on the major league level to replace Bay … IF they trade him.

If they don’t get that in return … they don’t trade Bay. Simple as that.

        • Darth Manuel says:

The Mets could get Bay… Its definitely possible.

        • mikey_FF says:

Anything can be possible. Whether that possibility is realistic or not is another thing entirely.

      • Darth Manuel says:

He did nothing!!! Instead we have Marlon Anderson who clearly has a case of VERTIGO manning the corner outfield spots.

Nady could of been in May for a couple of average prospects, Now its panic time and a sellers market.

        • napes22 says:

Nady would have been more expensive in May. At that point he was batting around .400

        • mikey_FF says:

Nady in May for a couple of average prospects? Really? Wow. That settles it.

          ugh.

        • Darth Manuel says:

The Yankees really broke the bank to acquire Nady at the trade deadline..

        • mikey_FF says:

What did you want the Mets to offer for Nady that was as good as or better than the Yankees package?

Instead of being sarcastic, answer the question.

        • ToastyJoe says:

Darth, maybe the problem isn’t who the Mets offered or didn’t offer, but rather who the PIRATES decided they wanted. Ever consider that?

        • freubr01 says:

If the mets are planning on starting Niese in the rotation next year, then I am glad they are holding him. If not, they should trade him…we just drafted Holt who is a stud, he can replace him on the farm

    • Tidewater says:

      Should have, not should of.

      • kistics says:

LOL… you just scratched the itch…

        • gipper82475 says:

Amen…how can you take anyone seriously who writes “should of,” or “could of,” rather than “should have,” or “could have?” It’s like these nincompoops hear “should’ve” and “could’ve” and translate it in their ignorant pea-brains to “should of / could of.”

You just have to love the current public education system! Maybe Hampton was right about the NY schools after all?

        • kistics says:

How about ‘there’ for ‘their’ or ‘then’ for ‘than’…

        • gipper82475 says:

          I know…it’s all very sad.

    • napes22 says:

While I won’t 100% defend his moves, there is no reason to bash him for not getting an OF. Who would have we traded for then that we couldn’t get now? They’d still be asking for the same ridiculous prices. It’s not ALWAYS the GM’s fault for not making a deal.

      • freubr01 says:

you should bash him, however, for going into the season relying upon alou, who is always hurt, that is where omar messed up, but it is not his fault he cant get a guy now

  5. Mets17 says:

We can do without a OF but we need a reliever

  6. ssor1005 says:

Get me Bradford and Huff, please.

    • DK says:

      BA HR RBI OBP SLG
      .302 22 72 .359 .554

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Huff has excellent batting numbers as DK points out above.

He’s also predominantly a DH who hasn’t played the OF since 2006 and has a career fielding percentage at 3B, of .945, so if he is acquired, where is he going to play?

      • kistics says:

Maybe the Mets can use him as a DH on interleague games

      • mylegshurt says:

I don’t see the Orioles dealing Huff so long as he remains productive. They are rebuilding upwards and have made some progress. Ownership doesn’t want to start over.

Also doesn’t help that O’s just took a series from the Yankees — not the right cue for a fire sale.

  7. mrose says:

so….you all want a deal for the sake of a deal? Great logic

    • Nightlife says:

      I know.

Most of these “reports” are designed to be bluffs to try and coax teams to make unnecessary, reactionary deals.

  8. I think it’s time to break out the winter meetings trade lube :-).

  9. Great pic, Matt.

  10. Tidewater says:

Why does Marlon Byrd’s name keep coming up? Over whom is he an upgrade?

  11. Mingo says:

This is exactly what I wanted to hear.

  12. metphan says:

Since when are we a small market team that has to hang on to prospects for dear life?

We have a chance to get to the WS this year. If we get Manny it will happen.

Go get the big fish already. This is New York.

    • mikey_FF says:

Where did you buy your crystal ball from. I’d like to get one too.

Manny doesn’t guarantee anything … and the fact remains that he most likely won’t get traded at all.

Even if the Mets DID have enough to trade for him … where does that leave us for next year and beyond? Ask your crystal ball.

    • The Slider says:

In that case, would you trade FMart, Neise and Kunz for Matt Holliday and Brian Fuentes?

    • Gina says:

Since the market started changing and teams starting locking up their star players earlier and free agency starting to decline.

    • DK says:

It’s a little different since revenue sharing, young All-stars are not going to hit the FA mkt as often as the past cause these cheap-skate small mkt teams now have money coming in. Have to be more cautious with prospects cause most FA that will be avail in the future are more often going to be older guys who have already peaked.

      • Gina says:

And the few good ones who hit the market, like Tex for example, are going to be asking for ridiculous contracts.

  13. Dirtysanchez says:

    Lol love the pic matt
Omar stay put…dont do anything stupid…

  14. metjim says:

Get Bay, he’s young, he’s proven. F-Mart is a great unkown. Bay is a great KNOWN.

    • freubr01 says:

bay is 30, so he is not all that young anymore…if they trade fmart, need to get a 25 year old back

      • Gina says:

25 is asking to much, anyone between 27-29 would make sense.

        • freubr01 says:

what i mean is get a guy (though not as talented) like beltran when we signed him, 26 and just on the cusp of being great, trade fmart and niese for a guy like that is worth it

        • Gina says:

Beltran was 28 when we signed him. Or he turned 28 early that season.

      • kistics says:

I wouldn’t mind the deal. I think Bay will have even better numbers with Wtight, Beltran and Delgado in the lineup

    • ravi3 says:

Bay is a great KNOWN who has crapped teh bed against lefties over the last two years, which is the exact opposite of what this team needs:

      ‘07: .227/.336/.406/.742
      ‘08: .193/.337/.349/.686

      That my friend is AWFUL.

      • Gina says:

Have you seen our teams splits against lefties and righties. The lines are basically identical. If we’re going to add a bat it should be the best bat possible righty/lefty shouldn’t be a concern,

  15. ToastyJoe says:

Meanwhile, could these ads on the FAN be any more annoying? Especially this JD Wentworth “opera” ad – makes me want to throw the radio out the window.

    • butthead says:

      Come on, sing along!!!

Call JG Wentworth.. 877 cash now!!!!!!

That stupid song has been in my head all week. Please make it stop!! I’ll take Guiseppie Franco and his Procede over that any day.

  16. 86mets42 says:

WE HAVE ONE OUTFIELDER!!!!! ONE !!!!! TATIS WILL NOT HOLD UP AND WHO KNOWS ABOUT CHURCH, IF WERE GONNA BE A CONTENDER WE NEED AN AVG OUTFIELDER

  17. Jetsmets321 says:

It seems to me that Omar is willing to wait for a shawn green to come along in august then to give in to seattle which is asking way too much for ibanez.

i have no idea where he is gonna go for bullpen help but if street can be had and then they bring up kunz, maybe the mets can solve their pen woes

  18. ssor1005 says:

    Solution:

    1) Sign Julio Franco to a 3 year deal as our new setup man…and

    2) Sign Timo Perez and order him to repeatedly compliment Pelfrey so he doesn’t lose confidence

    3) Repeat steps 1 through 2.

    • I think Timo Perez could constantly give Pelfrey encouragement and also constantly remind people to run out fly balls that look like they are going to bounce off the top fo the wall and back into play. Especially in Game 1 of a World Series game.

    • fongulalou says:

      SHHHHHHHHHHh!–Don’t give Omar any Ideas!!!

    • napes22 says:

You mean sign Desi Relaford to pitch!

  19. JoseReyesForPresident says:

    itch omar itch keep itching!!!

  20. 911nafstem says:

Has anyone else noticed that the farther we get from game 7 of the ‘06 NLCS the more painful the loss becomes?

    • freubr01 says:

yeah because we thought we’d be back there last year, and this year

      • Well it is still possible this year. But for me it has gotten less painful. I barely recall how close we were to the World Series. I finally ripped up my 2006 World Series tickets before this year. Time to move on. But that game was pretty painful. Unfortunately, my lasting memories from this game are:
        1) First batter of the game popped up to the infield. Delgado came in and missed it.
        2) Endy’s catch
        3) Squandered opportunities
        4) Yadier Molina’s metrosexual waxed eyebrows.

        • kistics says:

Ouch. It’s gotta hurt to rip up the WS tickets. I had 2 playoff tickets at Shea last year and I thought that was bad.

        • It took me a year to do it. I ripped up the 2006 ones after the last game of last season. This was after on that same night, going to the Giants-Eagles game at Giants Stadium and riding a shuttle from the parking lot, amidst “Let’s Go Phillies” chants. I wanted to hit someone.

        • kistics says:

Wow, you’ve gone through some tough times.
You ’should of’ stood up and say “Let’s go Mets!”

        • ToastyJoe says:

At least the Jints beat the snot out of the Eagles that night.

  21. jsugs says:

I hope we can hang on to our best prospects just long enough to get them to the bigs and prove they are not as great as everyone thought, lose trade value, and then ship them out for far less than they were worth originally. Lastings successfully did this now its Martinez’s turn. A team that has money should never hold onto a potential power hitter that will play a corner outfield spot given the chance to get one of the best proven power hitters in the game. If Manny gets moved and it is not to the Mets than Omar should either be fired for not giving up whatever prospects are needed or quit for not being allowed to do his job. Do people honestly believe Martinez is going to be more productive between today and whenever his first major league contract expires than Manny will be between now and he retires? that is time frame you have to look at because once that first time comes up the Mets can just bring him back if they trade him now.

  22. kd bart says:

It’s a sellers market. There is such a dearth of quality talent to be traded that the sellers can hold buyers up. I wouldn’t give my two best prospects to what amounts to a 2 month rental that doesn’t guarantee anything. Stop looking at Manny as if it were 2003.

  23. AngryFan says:

KENNY LOFTON *CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP* KENNY LOFON…

  24. Mingo says:

Look, I know this guy is a pariah but I don’t think its unreasonable to look at Jay Gibbons as an outfielder. He could be had on a minor league deal.

  25. tomterif says:

You know, I’m sure Jon Heyman, et al, are good reporters on these rumors, but do you really think that Omar is leaking exactly what he is thinking or plans to do to the press. While some of these rumors do happen, who flagged the I-Rod to the Yankees trade. I think Omar is going to do something nobody expects. Stop reacting to these rumors and wait till there is some real news. And you know what, if Omar decides nothing is out there worth our prospects, give him the benefit of the doubt.

  26. metphan says:

Re the above question, yes I would trade Fernando Martinez, Niese and Kunz for Holliday and Fuentes.

I would then try and trade Holliday for Manny, because I’m interested in who can help us win the WS this year, not who is under contract for next year.

    • ssor1005 says:

That’s stupid. So you’d rather have an aging drama queen who would cost us our future for 2 months?

      • metphan says:

If you get a chance to win you go for it.

        • kistics says:

Holliday and Fuentes went off the market like a week ago

        • krispy644 says:

Holliday over Manny at this time of year!! and you dont have to worry about his contract until he’s a FA.

          no brainer!!

Holliday can help you in the playoffs too. 2007 NLCS MVP if you forgot. finished 2nd in NL MVP voting if you forgot (honestly he was robbed!!)

    • kistics says:

      Not happening

  27. ssor1005 says:

Whatever he does, he better not trade Ron, Keith, or Gary. Send Kevin to the O’s for Bradford and Huff.

    • kistics says:

I don’t know about that. Keith has been a cancer in the clubhouse, getting in the face of Jose

  28. Gina says:

I hope he’s not actually itching to make a trade. It makes it sound like he wants to make a trade just for the sake of making a trade.

    • kistics says:

From what I’ve heard and read, Omar has always mentioned that he’s not going to make a trade just to make a trade. He was fairly strong in saying that the trade HAS to make sense in upgrading their talent.

      • fongulalou says:

Yeah, maybe he learned something from Keppinger
        for Gotay.

        • Gina says:

Or Lindstrom and Owens for Bostick and Vargas. Not that anyone involved was anyone special but there doesn’t seem to be any purpose to that trade.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      thats how i interpret it

  29. Fregosi says:

Phils rumored to be in for Ohlman.

  30. Mingo says:

Its Ohman to begin with and unless he is a rental the Braves aren’t going to help the Phillies.

Also the Twins are looking for a second baseman. Send Castillo back is what I say.

  31. 911nafstem says:

If the Mets make a package of Niese, Carp, and 1 or 2 other lower level prospects for Bay, they should really consider it. I get the feeling that the reason the Mets want Niese around so bad is because they have absolutely zero intention of resigning Perez.

  32. christian warrior says:

So let me see if I have this right.

Omar is no longer focusing on finding a starting outfielder when he is actively recruiting guys from the grounds crew to play there so that he can focus on the REAL problems like finding a defensive replacement for Carlos Delgado who can play in blowouts?

    Give me a break.

And it’s really great that Omar thinks that maybe guys like Kevin Millar and Marlon Byrd will be available after the deadline. That’s fantastic. I’d rather have Tatis in the OF than actually have to give something up for another Endy Chavez, and Kevin Millar doesn’t play in the OF.

What is going on with our FO?

    • 911nafstem says:

I would trade Niese for Dunn in a nanosecond. You have your top four starters in their twenties, sometimes you have to give something to get something.

    • fongulalou says:

Really Millar doesn’t play the OF? Who was the guy in his uniform patroling Left & Right for Fla,Bos&Balt.?————
      Cowboy up Gangstas!

      • christian warrior says:

Millar has played 3 games in the OF in the last 2.5 years, starting 2 of them.

Why do you suppose that is?

  33. Darth Manuel says:

Matt,, clearly the Mets will not trade both of them.. So wouldn’t a more accurate poll be

would you trade FMART, Parnell, Murphy for Bay

    • fongulalou says:

      No!–

    • 911nafstem says:

I still seriously doubt it will happen, but the Mets have to think strongly about derailing this Manny deal, I’m not saying trade FMart, but for gods sake, take the no-trade tag off of Niese and go after Bay. You need this guy, especially with Church looking like he’s not coming back anytime soon.

    • And my answer would still be no. Not trading FMart for Bay, when nothing has happened to his overall value this year, while we refused to include him in a deal for Santana. Bay simply isn’t that great. He is a very nice player, but not worth your best prospect. Manny is a different story.

      • 911nafstem says:

When you take into account that Bay is the key piece in a potential 3way deal for your division rival to get Manny, his value increases by a lot.

        • That is a great point. But I don’t think you can fall into the Yanks-Red Sox trap of moving players not to necessarily benefit yourself, but to keep players away from your rivals.

If the trade is for Manny and we can lock him up for 3 more years maybe, I would strongly consider it. But if you’re talking about dealing for Bay, I just can’t bring myself to it. But again, that is a great point.

  34. magic00700magic says:

We need to be careful what we wish for …

Omar may make a big trade. We lose our entire farm, and we still dont make the playoffs.

    Omar gets fired.

And you know what? We are the Expos.

    • 911nafstem says:

in fairness he made the Colon trade knowing that the team was about to get sold to the MLB. It’s not fair to judge him on that.

    • Darth Manuel says:

Nope cause we have Money and that could never happen.

    • Ugh, I hate this knock on Minaya.

If the Royals were 4 games back in the division, do you think they would trade their top three minor league prospects for an ace (which Bartolo Colon was at that time) or a big bat? You’re nuts if you think otherwise.

Fact is, this is what the Marlins are looking to do right now in order to get Manny. When you are unexpectedly contending, there is nothing wrong with going for it all. I wouldn’t blame Florida for it, and I certainly can’t blame Minaya for it.

  35. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Rosenthal says Manny trade nearing completion.

  36. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Rosenthal says Manny trade is almost done.

  37. Flushing_is_Burning says:

how come I don’t remembered the trading deadline getting THIS CRAZY last season?

  38. Joe D says:

MANNY RAMIREZ APPROVES TRADE TO MARLINS! I JUST POSTED IT!

  39. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Heyman says M’s starting lower their price for players, maybe they might lower their price for Ibanez although I doubt it.

  40. Fregosi says:

ESPN reporting Manny deal is DOA.

  41. atrain311 says:

All of this “Manny deal is happening…Manny deal is doa” is cracking me up! Too funny.
