News: Rhodes traded to the Marlins
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 31, 2008 10:51 am

According to ESPN’s Peter Gammons, on ESPN Radio, the Marlins have acquired LHP Arthur Rhodes in exchange for 22–year-old RHP Gaby Hernandez.

If you recall, Hernandez was traded to the Marlins by the Mets in 2005 for Paul Lo Duca.

The 39–year-old Rhodes, who did not play in the major leagues in 2007, has struck out 24 batters in 19 innings, while posting a 2.75 ERA in 33 appearances for the M’s this season, during which left-handed hitters are batting .194 against him.

Meanwhile, Hernandez, who has yet to pitch in the major leagues, is 5–8 with a 6.47 ERA in 17 minor-league starts.

The Mets, Marlins and Brewers were all reportedly interested in acquiring Rhodes, who was first rumored to be going to the Marlins yesterday in the Miami Herald.

    Gaby used to be ours!

  2. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

    hooray lets be glad

  3. Prismo says:

If the Marlins end up netting Rhodes and Manny today, the Mets and Phillies better watch their backs.

  4. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

    They still don’t scare me.

    • metfan435 says:

They took two of three from us, when they sweep is that when you get scared?

      • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

The Mets didn’t play up to their potential this week. When they come to shea we will see what they’re all about.

        • metfan435 says:

Are we getting a new bull pen? what I am saying is they are upgrading we are not yet, our bull pen is in need of a serious boost. Sorry this team has to prove they will not collapse down the stretch. we don’t know what Pelf is going to do he has never pitched 200 innings in a season. we don’t know if church is coming back and if he will be effective. Way too many if this happens, on this team.

it said on mlb traderumors that hernandez was aquired for paul lo duca in ‘05. So he was once a met? and at the time he was 18 or 19?

  6. JoseJoseJoseJose says:

    finally some good news

  7. napes22 says:

Gaby hasn’t done much since leaving the Mets.

  8. bigchart333 says:

we traded gaby to the marlins for lo duca, no?

  9. GravediggerHebner says:

Geez, if only we had held onto Gaby we could have Art Lee now, he said sarcastically.

  10. Andrew says:

Look what you did, Omar! This is what you get for trading away our Latino talent for white people! Never trade a Latino player again!

  11. Wally Backman says:

We are in major trouble. It’s amazing how the Yankees immediately fix every problem they have. I can only imgaine that they will aquire a starter today.

    • metsfan101589 says:

they can cause they have the B prospect teams are looking for at this time of the year. The mets gave their B prospects away for johan.

      • Nate W. says:

Actually the Mets traded 4 B prospects a year ago and got Luis Castillo and Jeff Conine.

I said at the time that those trades would come back and bite them.

    • napes22 says:

      That’s a bit of a generalization.

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

Major trouble would be if we still had Willie, we were 5 games under .500 and we made dumb moves for the sake of making moves.

Omar is doing the right thing here so far…

    • TugTheMan says:

the thing that blows my mind is that the Yankees were able to dish off Fartsworth for Rodriguez. Granted that Rodriguez is on a major decline and isnt the same player, etc etc BUT the man is still hitting in the area of .290 with a little pop and still has a throwing arm!!! For Fartsworth!!! Why cant Omar swing a deal shipping Show for an OFer??? The Mets OF doesnt really need a MAJOR overhaul just an piece to offset Tatis IF needed (Ibanez type). And I’m sorry, the Mets must have some B type prospect along the lines of Gaby Hernandez or the package that Yanks sent to get Nady. Its getting a bit fustrating watching all these names flying by and then watching players (great, good, fair or bad) switching teams.

      • metsfan101589 says:

the thing is a lot of teams still think farnsworth can be a lights out closer because he has the stuff for that job. Now detroit doesn’t need a future closer, but could use help there right now. Zumaya and Rodney, and Jones is horrible.

    • How did the Yankees fix their starting pitching problem?

      • TugTheMan says:

they havent. I’m not singing praises for the Yanks or saying how much better they are. what I’m saying is that the Yanks havent really given up much of anything (that I know) and getting some decent pieces back (Nady, Marte and Rodriguez.) By no means those trades make the Yanks that much better, but they have improved slightly…something that the Mets are looking to do.

  12. metsflip says:

Another name crossed off the Mets list

    • fongulalou says:

This is a prime example why one has to be careful w/the
“gotta hold onto Fmart,Niece etc.Stuff” Gaby Hernandez
depending on the source was either a top 5 or top 10 prospect both for us then the fish the last 4 seasons.

      • Tidewater says:

I was just thinking the same thing. Not all promising prospects end up fulfilling their potential.

That said, hang on to them until you get what you want. Trading F-Mart or Niese for an Ibanez type is nuts.

Like when Steve Phillips wanted to trade Reyes for Jose Cruz, Jr.

        • Mets17 says:

It was Wright for Cruz Jr

        • Gina says:

He offered up Jose for both Jose Cruz Jr and Roberto Alomar but the teams didn’t know enough about him to build deals around him. Which is one of the reasons I think people talking about trading Flores or Marte are ridiculous, you’re never going to get decent value back for them, at best they’ll be throw ins because other teams don’t want to take that kind of chance on players with so little information on them.

      • metsflip says:

Thats exactly why prospects are called prospects

      • The Slider says:

That’s right. Remember: Former “jewels of the Mets minor league system” David West Alex Escobar? Now in the “where are they now” catagory.

  13. kd bart says:

Arthur Rhodes isn’t going to change much.

  14. Nightlife says:

I predict this is the only addition the Marlins make today.

  15. Wally Backman says:

That’s a good pick-up for them no matter how you look at it. He was signed by the Mariners on a minor league contract. Hernandez is a fading prospect and the Marlins get a cheap, experienced, lefty specialist with good numbers. The Mets are in for a battle no doubt.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

In general I agree with you that the Mets are in for a battle. Specifically regarding Rhodes however, I’d say the only battle is between the hitters to see who can get to the batter’s box first.

    • nobeers says:

Starters averaging 6 innings a game and no long reliever spells trouble in Aug and Sept. That is common baseball knowledge.

      Thats not including Pedro.

      • Nate W. says:

you dont have to worry about September because you have a full 40 man roster to use. A couple minor league starters like Vargas and Figueroa and you have your long man situation covered.

of course the Mets have to survive thier brutal August scedule for Sept to even matter…

  16. krispy644 says:

has anyone forgot what Rhodes did to us when Seattle came to town? He quickly ended a rally in a save situation and his velocity touched 94-96 mph.

Marlins are trying to improve. they are serious. got to get used to it. we all said they will eventually fall. it hasnt happened yet!!

talks are sort of dying with Manny, but if they can get him, Mets and Phillies are in for one hell of a battle!

  17. JoseJoseJoseJose says:

non-waiver trade deadline, SI.com’s Jon Heyman weighs in with the latest trade talk from around the majors.
    10:58 a.m.

Competing GMs say the Mets’ Omar Minaya is “itching” to do a deal. And it’s no wonder with the Yankees stealing the show across town and the competing Marlins close to possibly adding superstar Manny Ramirez. However, a lot of Mets people want to hold onto their top prospects, including outfielder Fernando Martinez, and pitchers Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz and Robert Parnell. Seattle requested “two premium prospects” for outfielder Raul Ibanez, and Mets people don’t like that idea. Minaya is spending more time on the relief situation, which is looking iffy lately, especially with Duaner Sanchez’s radar gun readings down.

    • Bruce Boisclair says:

Hopefully, he is not too “itchy.” Don’t make a deal for the sake of getting something done.

Other teams have successfully held on to prospects and they have blossomed. Plus, we have a lot of guys (who have been labeled “untouchable”) who are steadily increasing their value to the point where, next year, they will either be on or close to being on our team, or more capable of being used as bait for bigger fish. We all kne
