by Matthew Cerrone

According to ESPN’s Peter Gammons, on ESPN Radio, the Marlins have acquired LHP Arthur Rhodes in exchange for 22–year-old RHP Gaby Hernandez.

If you recall, Hernandez was traded to the Marlins by the Mets in 2005 for Paul Lo Duca.

The 39–year-old Rhodes, who did not play in the major leagues in 2007, has struck out 24 batters in 19 innings, while posting a 2.75 ERA in 33 appearances for the M’s this season, during which left-handed hitters are batting .194 against him.

Meanwhile, Hernandez, who has yet to pitch in the major leagues, is 5–8 with a 6.47 ERA in 17 minor-league starts.

The Mets, Marlins and Brewers were all reportedly interested in acquiring Rhodes, who was first rumored to be going to the Marlins yesterday in the Miami Herald.

Gaby used to be ours!

jstocks5 July 31, 2008 at 11:06 am

with an off day today. omar and crew has a lot of time to be thinking. for some reason i feel a move has to be made

mikepelfreyismyguy July 31, 2008 at 10:53 am

hooray lets be glad

Prismo July 31, 2008 at 10:53 am

If the Marlins end up netting Rhodes and Manny today, the Mets and Phillies better watch their backs.

atlantasnumber1metsfan July 31, 2008 at 10:54 am

They still don’t scare me.

metfan435 July 31, 2008 at 11:20 am

They took two of three from us, when they sweep is that when you get scared?

atlantasnumber1metsfan July 31, 2008 at 11:25 am

The Mets didn’t play up to their potential this week. When they come to shea we will see what they’re all about.

metfan435 July 31, 2008 at 11:30 am

Are we getting a new bull pen? what I am saying is they are upgrading we are not yet, our bull pen is in need of a serious boost. Sorry this team has to prove they will not collapse down the stretch. we don’t know what Pelf is going to do he has never pitched 200 innings in a season. we don’t know if church is coming back and if he will be effective. Way too many if this happens, on this team.

metsfan101589 July 31, 2008 at 10:54 am

it said on mlb traderumors that hernandez was aquired for paul lo duca in ‘05. So he was once a met? and at the time he was 18 or 19?

metsfan101589 July 31, 2008 at 10:55 am

ok i got my answer, but we gave him up for lo duca, unreal.

Nate W. July 31, 2008 at 1:58 pm

I cant wait for the Rhodes v. Schneider matchup so we can see who actually won that sequence of trades.

whats that, Ramon Castro is pinch hitting?

JoseJoseJoseJose July 31, 2008 at 10:54 am

finally some good news

napes22 July 31, 2008 at 10:54 am

Gaby hasn’t done much since leaving the Mets.

bigchart333 July 31, 2008 at 10:54 am

we traded gaby to the marlins for lo duca, no?

fongulalou July 31, 2008 at 10:55 am

Yeah,Gaby was once a can’t miss.

GravediggerHebner July 31, 2008 at 10:56 am

Geez, if only we had held onto Gaby we could have Art Lee now, he said sarcastically.

Andrew July 31, 2008 at 10:56 am

Look what you did, Omar! This is what you get for trading away our Latino talent for white people! Never trade a Latino player again!

metsfan101589 July 31, 2008 at 10:57 am

unless his name i luis castillo.

Wally Backman July 31, 2008 at 10:57 am

We are in major trouble. It’s amazing how the Yankees immediately fix every problem they have. I can only imgaine that they will aquire a starter today.

metsfan101589 July 31, 2008 at 10:59 am

they can cause they have the B prospect teams are looking for at this time of the year. The mets gave their B prospects away for johan.

Nate W. July 31, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Actually the Mets traded 4 B prospects a year ago and got Luis Castillo and Jeff Conine.

I said at the time that those trades would come back and bite them.

napes22 July 31, 2008 at 11:00 am

That’s a bit of a generalization.

atlantasnumber1metsfan July 31, 2008 at 11:03 am

Major trouble would be if we still had Willie, we were 5 games under .500 and we made dumb moves for the sake of making moves.

Omar is doing the right thing here so far…

TugTheMan July 31, 2008 at 11:06 am

the thing that blows my mind is that the Yankees were able to dish off Fartsworth for Rodriguez. Granted that Rodriguez is on a major decline and isnt the same player, etc etc BUT the man is still hitting in the area of .290 with a little pop and still has a throwing arm!!! For Fartsworth!!! Why cant Omar swing a deal shipping Show for an OFer??? The Mets OF doesnt really need a MAJOR overhaul just an piece to offset Tatis IF needed (Ibanez type). And I’m sorry, the Mets must have some B type prospect along the lines of Gaby Hernandez or the package that Yanks sent to get Nady. Its getting a bit fustrating watching all these names flying by and then watching players (great, good, fair or bad) switching teams.

metsfan101589 July 31, 2008 at 11:10 am

the thing is a lot of teams still think farnsworth can be a lights out closer because he has the stuff for that job. Now detroit doesn’t need a future closer, but could use help there right now. Zumaya and Rodney, and Jones is horrible.

krumbledkookie July 31, 2008 at 11:17 am

How did the Yankees fix their starting pitching problem?

TugTheMan July 31, 2008 at 11:34 am

they havent. I’m not singing praises for the Yanks or saying how much better they are. what I’m saying is that the Yanks havent really given up much of anything (that I know) and getting some decent pieces back (Nady, Marte and Rodriguez.) By no means those trades make the Yanks that much better, but they have improved slightly…something that the Mets are looking to do.

metsflip July 31, 2008 at 10:58 am

Another name crossed off the Mets list

fongulalou July 31, 2008 at 11:02 am

This is a prime example why one has to be careful w/the
“gotta hold onto Fmart,Niece etc.Stuff” Gaby Hernandez
depending on the source was either a top 5 or top 10 prospect both for us then the fish the last 4 seasons.

Tidewater July 31, 2008 at 11:05 am

I was just thinking the same thing. Not all promising prospects end up fulfilling their potential.

That said, hang on to them until you get what you want. Trading F-Mart or Niese for an Ibanez type is nuts.

Like when Steve Phillips wanted to trade Reyes for Jose Cruz, Jr.

Mets17 July 31, 2008 at 11:22 am

It was Wright for Cruz Jr

Gina July 31, 2008 at 11:34 am

He offered up Jose for both Jose Cruz Jr and Roberto Alomar but the teams didn’t know enough about him to build deals around him. Which is one of the reasons I think people talking about trading Flores or Marte are ridiculous, you’re never going to get decent value back for them, at best they’ll be throw ins because other teams don’t want to take that kind of chance on players with so little information on them.

metsflip July 31, 2008 at 11:05 am

Thats exactly why prospects are called prospects

The Slider July 31, 2008 at 11:11 am

That’s right. Remember: Former “jewels of the Mets minor league system” David West Alex Escobar? Now in the “where are they now” catagory.

kd bart July 31, 2008 at 11:00 am

Arthur Rhodes isn’t going to change much.

Nightlife July 31, 2008 at 11:03 am

I predict this is the only addition the Marlins make today.

metsflip July 31, 2008 at 11:07 am

I really think the Manny deal is going to be get done

fongulalou July 31, 2008 at 11:10 am

Hopefully you’re right. I’d like to see Manny stay were he
is Haunt the yankees some more and keep them out of the
playoffs while the Dodgers get in.

Wally Backman July 31, 2008 at 11:05 am

That’s a good pick-up for them no matter how you look at it. He was signed by the Mariners on a minor league contract. Hernandez is a fading prospect and the Marlins get a cheap, experienced, lefty specialist with good numbers. The Mets are in for a battle no doubt.

GravediggerHebner July 31, 2008 at 11:10 am

In general I agree with you that the Mets are in for a battle. Specifically regarding Rhodes however, I’d say the only battle is between the hitters to see who can get to the batter’s box first.

nobeers July 31, 2008 at 11:13 am

Starters averaging 6 innings a game and no long reliever spells trouble in Aug and Sept. That is common baseball knowledge.

Thats not including Pedro.

Nate W. July 31, 2008 at 2:03 pm

you dont have to worry about September because you have a full 40 man roster to use. A couple minor league starters like Vargas and Figueroa and you have your long man situation covered.

of course the Mets have to survive thier brutal August scedule for Sept to even matter…

krispy644 July 31, 2008 at 11:10 am

has anyone forgot what Rhodes did to us when Seattle came to town? He quickly ended a rally in a save situation and his velocity touched 94-96 mph.

Marlins are trying to improve. they are serious. got to get used to it. we all said they will eventually fall. it hasnt happened yet!!

talks are sort of dying with Manny, but if they can get him, Mets and Phillies are in for one hell of a battle!

krumbledkookie July 31, 2008 at 11:23 am

the Mets are in for a battle anyway.

JoseJoseJoseJose July 31, 2008 at 11:10 am

non-waiver trade deadline, SI.com’s Jon Heyman weighs in with the latest trade talk from around the majors.
10:58 a.m.

Competing GMs say the Mets’ Omar Minaya is “itching” to do a deal. And it’s no wonder with the Yankees stealing the show across town and the competing Marlins close to possibly adding superstar Manny Ramirez. However, a lot of Mets people want to hold onto their top prospects, including outfielder Fernando Martinez, and pitchers Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz and Robert Parnell. Seattle requested “two premium prospects” for outfielder Raul Ibanez, and Mets people don’t like that idea. Minaya is spending more time on the relief situation, which is looking iffy lately, especially with Duaner Sanchez’s radar gun readings down.

Bruce Boisclair July 31, 2008 at 11:20 am

Hopefully, he is not too “itchy.” Don’t make a deal for the sake of getting something done.

Other teams have successfully held on to prospects and they have blossomed. Plus, we have a lot of guys (who have been labeled “untouchable”) who are steadily increasing their value to the point where, next year, they will either be on or close to being on our team, or more capable of being used as bait for bigger fish. We all knew that the Santana trade would hamstring us around July 31, so let’s not act all shocked that we are not pulling the trigger on something more substantial. I still think Omar gets a relief pitcher before the day is done; it wouldn’t surprise me, given Joe Smith’s recent struggles, if that is Chad Bradford.

bigvito22 July 31, 2008 at 11:11 am

Wouldn’t have minded Rhodes be he has a history of imploding in big spots

The Slider July 31, 2008 at 11:13 am

That’s true about Rhoads. He was here in Philly for a year and they didn’t like him at all for that reason. If I recall, he also has a tendancy to walk batters.

SadClownGoodMets July 31, 2008 at 11:16 am

“didn’t like him at all” is an understatement I think.

dcmetsfan July 31, 2008 at 11:12 am

Good pickup for the Marlins. Not disappointed the Mets didn’t grab him since I think we have our fill of situational lefties already.

krispy644 July 31, 2008 at 11:12 am

another thing. I dont know if Omar looked into Rhodes, but I wonder what the price was if he did. because the Marlins only gave up one prospect, who is not even major league ready yet.

ssor1005 July 31, 2008 at 11:16 am

Get ready to see Rhodes called in to face Delgado

krumbledkookie July 31, 2008 at 11:20 am

And Delgado take him deep…

ssor1005 July 31, 2008 at 11:25 am

into the count

GravediggerHebner July 31, 2008 at 11:32 am

Delgado v. Rhodes career:

31 PA, 5 H, 2 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 8 K, .167 BA, .194 OBP, .333 SLG.

So it seems he doesn’t often hit Rhodes, but when he does it’s for extra bases IMO.

There's Always '09 July 31, 2008 at 11:22 am

Arthur Rhodes is garbage. How many times has he absolutely melted in a big spot. Didn’t want him on my team. Glad Florida got him.

The Slider July 31, 2008 at 11:31 am

Many times, if I recall correctly.

Darth Manuel July 31, 2008 at 11:25 am

I’m so happy we did nothing to improve. This is going to be a fantastic finish to the season. Tatis.Chaves,Beltran.. Can you see the parade? What an outfield! Clutch hitters at every spot.

Late September when the Mets are still in the race and were in a crucial spot, I can’t wait for Feliciano and Smith to come in and close the door. We are truly built for a championship.. Way to go Omar.. Solid depth all around.

helicopter ben johnson July 31, 2008 at 11:31 am

lighten up Francis

DK July 31, 2008 at 11:34 am

You will not be getting an invite to the parade. Who thought we would be having a parade for the Giants in the canyon? If this is what we have so be it, big names are not always the answer.

There's Always '09 July 31, 2008 at 11:26 am

Today will tell us a lot about what Omar thinks of the post season. Right now, this team is good enough to make it to October. Are they good enough to win in October though? I’m not so sure. If Omar is like Joe Torre and thinks the playoffs are a crapshoot; a) Hank Steinbrenner would fire him and, b) he will feel less of a need to make a deal. However, if he truly believes they aren’t, he may press the panic button. A heavy hitting outfielder would push this team to the top, IMO.

Dirtysanchez July 31, 2008 at 11:31 am

Well……..
I dont think the position that omar is in right now has any relationship to what he thinks the teams chances are in october. Im sure omar would have loved to trade fmart and others to get the talent out there, but part of a gms job is to think about the future so we can avoid giving up draft picks by signing Type A FA. If he doesnt make a move i think its because of lack of pieces not will, and im okay with that.

There's Always '09 July 31, 2008 at 11:35 am

I’m completely fine with not making a move either. I’m with Joe Torre in that I think many times it’s a crap shoot. If you have solid starting pitching, you increase your odds though. I think we have solid starting pitching when healthy.

I think if Omar really thought by adding a premier bat, it would put this team over the top, he would decimate the farm. It’s a win now world. Not as much as the NFL, but I would gladly take a World Series this year at the expense of needing to rebuild the farm for the next few years.

Nightlife July 31, 2008 at 11:35 am

I am a believer that the playoffs are a crapshoot (see St. Louis 2006), but that doesn’t mean I don’t think a move should possibly be made.

metsflip July 31, 2008 at 11:27 am

Why is it that the other teams dont ask much for teams other than the Mets?
Its like the Mets are the uncool kids

krumbledkookie July 31, 2008 at 11:33 am

lol, They hate us because Jose is always dancing and “being immature.”

krispy644 July 31, 2008 at 11:38 am

let’em hate us. IIIFFF we go deep into the playoffs, they will be blowing us like crazy! lol

metsflip July 31, 2008 at 11:39 am

This is true

Justin4383 July 31, 2008 at 11:35 am

Is it just me or does this feel like its gonna be Hanukkah where all your friends who celebrate Christmas get Nintendos and Segas and you get clothes and a pencil case?

roman411 July 31, 2008 at 11:48 am

I was thinking a plastic dreidel and a visit from aunt rose who always smelled like too much perfume and moth balls.

however…

aunt rose let you stay up late to watch west coast mets games when you slept over.
