Note: Today will be a Busy, Crazy Day
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 31, 2008 7:22 am

I anticipate a crazy, fast-paced, super-informative day today, with the MLB Trade Deadline set to expire at 4 pm EDT.

My advice would be to check back here quite frequently, because things tend to move rather quickly.

I will do my best to update the blinking link in the upper left-corner of MetsBlog, to keep you up to date on the hottest topics and make things a bit easier in terms of pertinent information and links.

That said, excuse me while I go brew a few gallons of coffee.

Not sure if the coffee will do it today, Matt. I had a hard time keeping up yesterday and all I was doing was reading the updates.

Good luck and thanks for keeping us informed!

  2. Prismo says:

Good luck Matt! I’ll be working (read: F5ing Metsblog) all day for the updates. I like the banner on the upper left corner too.

Cheers to hopefully a successful day for the Mets!

D*mned if you Do, d*mned if you don’t….

    That’s Omar’s predicament today.

If he makes a trade to get a reliever, a corner OF or even a much-needed SP, the media and most fans will slaughter him for “overpaying” and trading away a top prospect or even a prospect whose reputation and potential will be boosted by the fans and media post-trade.

If Omar doesn’t make a trade, the media and most fans will say that we didn’t have any prospects that anyone else wanted and will slaughter him for “ruining our farm system” by making the Johan deal, or will even revert back to the “curse” of Scott Kazmir.

    Enjoy your day, Omar! :)

I think he has to make a move.. but I don’t think he will.. I predict a very tense day for Mets fans as landscapes change over baseball, and we’re gonna be left to wonder if we have in the cubbords is enough…..

I get the feeling Omar doesn’t do anything unless he gets a good deal, and it’s a total seller’s market this week. Omar likes to keep his chips when that’s the case, and hope the market falls to him. This is similar to 2006, when Zito, Willis, Livan, Meche and other names were too high priced and the other rotation fillers weren’t worth it. Granted, injuries hurt that year but it turned out that Omar was right to lay off those pitchers. The only reason he dealt last minute was Duaner’s car accident.

So in a weird way, I hope he doesn’t deal, because I think it would mean Maine is not as ok as they say. Their pitching is fine if Maine is actually fine as they say, and the OFers are WAY overpriced. Wait for August and waivers.

God speed my good man. Now get to work!

  6. Teacherhst says:

    Matt,

Good luck today. For the past few years, this has been my home-away-from-home during the trading deadline. I appreciate all the work you are going to do today.

  7. bigvito22 says:

I’ll be checking back all day, thanks Matt!

  8. Dirtysanchez says:

ill be at work and on this site the whole day! Thanks matt! keep the updates coming.

  9. acraane says:

    I shall call him……….mini-heyman

  10. VegasMet says:

Unless an “offer he can’t refuse” comes along, I’m all for Omar sitting pat.

Too many people (on an earlier thread about the deadline) seem to want a signing for signing sake because it’s deadline time. Like it’s Christmas morning and we didn’t get any presents!

I see only one “difference-maker” out there, and for a two-month rental, and the requisite drama that Manny brings, I just don’t think it’s worth giving up what seems to be our only legitimate prospects.

If Maine is ok, and Church can play(2 big ifs, I know, but in deference to my home town, I’ll take the risk), the only area that I see the Mets in any real need is middle relief, and someone to help out there should be available for a reasonable price…

    • ridethesnake says:

I agree with you, except I think if Omar makes a deal he shed Show’s contract while he is pitching decent, and brings up Kunz — just a gut feeling.

  11. metsfan42793 says:

I will be at work to all day but I will be checking literally every 10 minutes for updates. Just wanted to say this is the best website I have ever been on for baseball information and most of all mets information. This is 10 times as better than mets.com, mlb.com, si.com, sny.tv, and espn.com. Thanks for the updates Matt.

  12. danatural44 says:

don’t panic omar. don’t give up the farm. let’s go mets!

where is my phone call regarding my seats in citifield or this mysterious packet i’m suppose to receive?

  13. BaltimoreMets says:

Can we confirm that none of our players got into cab accidents in Miami last night? I’d like to know now instead of at 3:00 this afternoon – brings back bad memories of 2 years ago.

    • ridethesnake says:

Today at 3pm you will find out that John Maine is out until 2011. Happy deadline day.

  14. metjim says:

    We appreciate you Matt!!

Now tell Omar to get us a RELIABLE reliever!!

  15. magic00700magic says:

    Matt:

I am torn. If there is a trade involving FMART, I don’t think I want to know about it.

If I do, my computer may end up in the east river.

    • dwright012 says:

I know you’re kidding magic.. and I even remember you for from posting on the ESPN Mets message boards back in the day…

But I’m curious why so strong about F-mart?

      • magic00700magic says:

I am a big fan of youth and promoting from within.

Granted we have 50 million coming off the books, but we also have increased contract obligations for Wright, J. Reyes and others.

To put a great team on the table you need some inexpensive talent.

I have seen FMart on occasion and I like his stuff.

From a point when we thought we had too many young OFers with Gomez, Milledge and FMART, I am still annoyed with losing Gomez. I want one of them to stick around.

        • starz31 says:

Yea, but Gomez returned a pretty good pitcher for us. Milledge has talent, but it’ll take him a few years to really thrive. Fmart was always touted as a more pure hitter than those two (obv the others have more tools) and thats why I kinda wanna keep him. Athletic toolsy players we have groomed b4 and failed (escobar) but we haven’t had a pure hitter since DWright and before him I couldn’t tell you.

  16. chew13 says:

Days like this is what got me to 1st visit the site years ago. You do a great job Matt. Thanks for keeping us in the loop. Go Mets!

    • rogasm says:

Wow, Has this site been up for 6 years already? I came here day 2 and cannot leave! I’m getting old!

  17. starz31 says:

Great Job in past years around this time and its a compliment to say I expect no less. That said, this is one of the few years where we enter the deadline day not being tied or rumored to any big deals. Last year, we had Gomez’s and milledge’s name being thrown around. Chad Cordero was in everyone’s head (glad we didn’t do that one!). That said its gonna be a busy day as everyone will be wondering who and where and if our prospects will be on the move.

    Keep Fmart! trade Niese!

    • patrick says:

under achieving over hyped outfield prospects are a dime a dozen, young lefties who improve every year while jumping levels are not, you “F-MART” fans have bought into the ridiculous hype and superlatives thrown at this kid who has flat out not made an impact yet beyond rookie ball, and the only thing you can hang your argument on is he is 19 playing a level above where he should, to which I can only say that means it will be at least three years before he makes credible impact at the major league level.

He would have already been traded for Bay if I was the GM.

  18. roman411 says:

I’m mostly a Sumatra fan myself but French Roast will suffice if necessary.

    Oh…this isn’t a thread about coffee?

    Matt,

Good luck today. These are the days your servers crash (I work in IT across the street from SNY studios so if you need someone to help….) and your staff gets stressed (there’s a guy on the corner of 10th and 46th who sells stuff to relax you).

    All kidding of course.

  19. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

i would make the fmart trade in a second, this is manny ramirez, the greatest righty in history, yeah, that includes arod, and he is clutch, why not. this completely elevates them to world series, pennant at the minimum

    • patrick says:

Manny is not the player he once was, For Bay I would send the incredibly over hyped Martinez in a second, you have a right handed bat in his prime and under contract for at least one more season at a very reasonable price.

Martinez better be the ROY next year and be an immediate all star caliber player the way Wright was, anything less is unexpectable the way they treat this kid.

      • starz31 says:

the way they treat this kid? its responses like that, they are extra cautious with the kid. People like you would boo him if he makes an out in his debut. which is just unreasonable. The kid is 19 years old, there is no reason to rush him. Over-hyped only b/c the kid cant stay on the field. Sounds just like another 19 year old that debuted at the big league level and he is our starting shortstop.

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Manny is the greatest righty in history?

      In history? Really?

  20. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

its not that, it is just that the mets, if you know, he does well, just sign him to a 3-4 year deal, if not, he leaves for free agency, and you get the players that you had lost, it is risky, i know, but if omar plays all his cards right, the mets might, i repeat, might go to the world series,

cuz frankly, the only reason martinez is hyped is cuz he is the only prospect that is an A caliber prospect. if he was so good, he would have been known when guys like carlos gomez and MY GUY LASTINGS MILLEDGE were still here. know this, lastings was one of my favorite players watching. why did the mets trade him, he might be a 30-30 guy one day. that seriously is horrible.

    • patrick says:

Lastings Milledge is garbage and should have been traded for Ramirez in 2005 and 2006 when the opportunities presented themselves and Ramirez still had production ahead of him.

    • starz31 says:

He was rated above Gomez and Milledge, WHEN they were here. And thats when he was 18 years old. Thats why, WHEN they were here, that he was untouchable and they were’nt. He’s been hyped since the day we signed him in 2005.

  21. AngryFan says:

It won’t be a busy, crazy day for the Mets :(

  22. JNGordon says:

    The Yankees now have:
    A-Rod
    I-Rod and
    Nimrod (Steinbrenner)
