Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com writes, as of 1:30 pm, “The
Manny Ramirez trade was ‘dead,’ according to an executive with one of the three teams involved in the discussions.”
In a post to ESPN.com at 1 pm, Peter Gammons wrote, “A source close to the three-way negotiations involving Ramirez says the deal is close to dead,” because the deal would essentially come down to the Red Sox trading Ramirez, $9 million and two prospects for Jason Bay.
…from what i can gather, this is all about money…buzz from Boston and Miami continue to suggest that the Pirates are confortable with the prospects coming back in return, however it’s the Marlins who are not confortable with the amount of money they will be getting from the Red Sox, while renting ramirez and giving up on so much young talent…
In an appearance on ESPN’s MLB Trade Deadline Show, currently airing on ESPN News, Jason Stark reported that the Blue Jays are now interested in M’s OF Raul Ibanez.
…form what i can gather, the M’s contacted the Blue Jays, not the other way around, which would suggest that the price on ibanez could be ready to come down…
…frankly, i still believe the Mariners just do not want to trade ibanez, who, stark and others, have suggested could simply end up back in Seattle as a free agent following this season…
According to Stark, the Mets expressed interest in Ibanez, ‘but didn’t get far,’ as was the case with the Cubs.
Tagged Raul Ibanez |In a post to his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman
writes, “As of 1 p.m., Met officials were growing seriously downcast about the possibility of making a trade today.”
…i am trying not to believe anything i read about the Mets, because i have grown used to Omar Minaya making moves that i never saw coming while being quite creative…so, hopefully, today is one of those days…
Sherman also blogs about the Yankees plans before the Deadline.
According to Jason Stark on ESPN.com, “The buzz around the
sport is that the Pirates are still talking to other teams about OF Jason Bay,” including the Blue Jays.
Speaking of outfielders, on SI.com, Jon Heyman reports that the Reds are requesting RHP Jeff Neimann and RHP Jeremy Hellickson from the Rays in a deal for Adam Dunn.
Earlier today, Heyman wrote that the D’Backs had made a play for Dunn, offering 1B Chad Tracy.
…from what i can gather, the Rays were reluctant to part with niemann in a deal for bay, so i am not sure why they would consider him in a deal for dunn…
Speaking of Bay and Dunn, while Stark recently wrote on
ESPN.com that the Rays are not pursuing Bay and Dunn, Stark’s colleague, Buster Olney, then quickly reported that the Rays are still pursuing Bay and Dunn.
…oh, boy…it’s that time of day…buckle up…
Nevertheless, according to Stark, the Pirates continue to seek a three-prospect package in exchange for Bay.
…well, from all of the Manny Ramirez reports, it’s safe to assume that any deal for bay would need to include at least one prospect better than, say, Ryan Tucker and Mike Stanton, who the Pirates would have been getting from the Marlins in exchange for bay in a three-team deal with Boston…
…hey, who’s dizzy…i am, i am…
In a recent appearance on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, Buster Olney said there is just a 99 percent chance that the A’s do absolutely nothing before today’s 4 pm Trade Deadline.
Last week, in the San Francisco Chronicle, Susan Slusser wrote that the Reds and Mets had expressed interest in trading for A’s RHP Huston Street, as did Dan Graziano in a report for the Star-Ledger a few days later.
Though a deal hasn’t been officially agreed to, according to Jon Heyman at SI.com, Ramirez has approved a trade to the Marlins.
However, according to the Boston Herald, FoxSports.com, and others, if the Pirates do not get a sufficient level of prospect in return for Jason Bay, they may pull out of the rumored three-team deal that would also reportedly net them Marlins OF Jeremy Hermida.
The Red Sox will still work to deal Ramirez even if the Pirates pull out of discussions, reports Baseball Prospectus.
According to Carroll, “They can’t do a deal to just the Marlins, but the Dodgers and one other mystery team have been contacted.”
…ah, yes, the ‘Mystery Team,’ made famous by Scott Boras…i love those guys…i always imagine the Riddler as being their General Manager…
…the buzz from tampa seems to be that the Rays will pounce on Jason Bay if talks with the Marlins and Red Sox fall apart…the thing is, folks, you have less than four hours to figure this out, so let’s get moving…

According to MLB.com, Reds OF Ken Griffey Jr. has accepted a trade to the White Sox.
Jon Heyman, at SI.com, says the Reds will recieve pitcher Nick Masset and minor league infielder Danny Richar.
…Update…8:15 am…
The White Sox have completed a trade that will allow them to acquire Griffey from the Reds, according to Ken Rosnthal at FoxSports.com.
Griffey is batting .245 this season with a .355 OBP, 15 HR and 53 RBI in 359 at-bats
In an update to his blog for SI.com, Jon Heyman writes:
“Competing GMs say Omar Minaya is ‘itching’’ to do a deal…However, a lot of Mets people want to hold
onto their top prospects…Minaya is spending more time on the relief situation.”
…from what i can gather, minaya may be turning his attention away from a significant upgrade, which will cost a quality prospect, and instead could return to the idea of just locking down specific holes on the team, such as a legitimate, defensive replacement for Carlos Delgado, and a power bat for the bench, while swapping out relief pitchers to keep the bullpen fresh…
…also, the Mets do not seem eager to push for a starting outfielder, a) because they believe in Fernando Tatis, for now, and b) trust that players like Kevin Millar or Marlon Byrd will end being available on the waiver wire…
…in fact, the team’s desire to acquire an outfielder likely has more to do with Ryan Church, than it does with tatis…
Tagged Omar Minaya |According to ESPN’s Peter Gammons, on ESPN Radio, the Marlins have acquired LHP Arthur Rhodes in exchange for 22–year-old RHP Gaby Hernandez.
If you recall, Hernandez was traded to the Marlins by the Mets in 2005 for Paul Lo Duca.
The 39–year-old Rhodes, who did not play in the major leagues in 2007, has struck out 24 batters in 19 innings, while posting a 2.75 ERA in 33 appearances for the M’s this season, during which left-handed hitters are batting .194 against him.
Meanwhile, Hernandez, who has yet to pitch in the major leagues, is 5–8 with a 6.47 ERA in 17 minor-league starts.
The Mets, Marlins and Brewers were all reportedly interested in acquiring Rhodes, who was first rumored to be going to the Marlins yesterday in the Miami Herald.
