postGame: Mets 6 Marlins 2

by Mike Nichols on August 31st, 2008 at 6:07 pm

The Mets (76–61) defeated the Marlins (69–68) today by the score of 6 to 2 in Dolphins Stadium.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

Pedro Martinez continue his first inning struggles as he allowed two runs in the opening frame, but rebounded and settled down over his next five innings to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Despite not scoring in the first inning of today’s game, the Mets brought out the lumber against Marlins pitcher Scott Olsen. Nick Evans, David Wright and Carlos Beltran each hit solo homeruns to give the Mets an early one run lead.

It looked as if the Mets would again set the offense on cruise control the rest of the day, but were able to get to Olsen again in the seventh as they scored three runs on four hits and a walk.

In typical Jerry Manuel fashion, he mixed and matched his way through the last three innings, using five relievers.

Brian Stokes tried to make it interesting in the ninth, allowing two hits, but Jose Reyes put a stop to that with a beautiful diving catch in the hole at short to end the game.

Once again the Mets bounced back after another brutal loss the night before and perhaps put the proverbial nail in the coffin of the Marlins chances to compete for the National League East title.

The Mets will continue their eight-game road trip as they start a series versus the Wild Card leading Brewers tomorrow at 2:05 pm, with Johan Santana taking on Ben Sheets.

Read: Today in the NL East

by David Pinto on August 31st, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Kevin Gregg’s secret knee injury may have cost the Marlins a shot at the division title:

In that brutally honest talk, Gregg confessed to his manager for the first time that he has been going to the mound with a knee so inflamed that it made landing on his left leg painful, rather than second nature.

Gregg holds a 16.20 ERA since August 15th, his last two outings the worst of the group.

Cristian Guzman leads the Nationals in hits during their five game win streak.  His 14 for 24 included two doubles, a triple and a home run.  Note that Elijah Dukes, in fewer plate appearances, produced the same number of RBI and scored more runs than Cristian.

The Phillies are doing a very good job of keeping the Cubs from drawing walks.  Phillies pitchers issued just 3.1 BB per 9 innings to Cubs batters, the fourth best average against Chicago in the majors.  The Astros have allowed just 2.1 walks per 9 innings to Cubs batters, the best in the majors.

This article claims Chipper Jones‘s home run Saturday night tied him with Eddie Mathews for consecutive 20 home run seasons at the start of a career, 14.  But Chipper came up for a cup of coffee in 1993 and didn’t hit any home runs.  I assume, instead of start of career, they mean from the player’s rookie season.

postGame: Mets 5 Marlins 4

by Mike Nichols on August 29th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

The Mets (75–60) defeated the Marlins (68–67) tonight by the score of 5 to 4 in Dolphins Stadium.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

Whew, you can exhale now.

I don’t think the Mets have had a more shocking win this year than they did tonight.

On a night when Oliver Perez managed to pitch through six innings without having much command of the strikezone and the Mets offense looked to be asleep at the wheel, the game came down to a dramatic ninth inning.

With the Mets down to their final out, down by one in the top of the ninth and the base loaded, Carlos Beltran crushed a first-pitch fastball from Marlins “closer” Kevin Gregg for a clutch grand slam. The Mets dugout couldn’t have looked more pumped, which gave me chills.

However, it can never be easy with the Mets bullpen. In the bottom of the ninth, Mets “closer” Luis Ayala got the first two outs of the innings with ease, just as Gregg did in the top half, but proceeded to let up two runs before getting the final out to preserve the save.

Excellent win tonight gentlemen, keep it rollin’.

The Mets will continue their three-game series versus the Marlins, with Mike Pelfrey (13-8) taking on Ricky Nolasco (13-7).

Read: Wright’s September Production

by Mike Nichols on August 29th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

In his most recent The Starting 9 column for ESPN.com, Jerry Crasnick takes a look at the nine players who are poised to carry their team during the season’s final month.

Among those listed by Crasnick, include Mets 3B David Wright, who is a career .324 hitter with a .939 OPS during the month of September.

Crasnick credits Wright’s performance and leadership during the team’s collapse last season, writing:

“Wright put up monster numbers in September (six homers, 20 RBIs and a 1.034 OPS), and won points for standing at his locker and answering the hard questions during the team’s late meltdown. In New York’s 8-7 loss to the Phillies on Tuesday, Wright stayed in the game despite a mashed right hand and spent most of the 13th inning flexing his fingers. He’s just built that way.”
