Mets 2B-3B Dan Murphy has been promoted to Triple-A New Orleans, according to Toby Hyde of MetsMinorLeagueBlog.com
Murphy is the second top prospect playing in Binghamton to get promoted, after Jon Niese was called up and made a sparkling debut this past week.
In his great, informative post, Toby writes that Murphy’s manager at Binghamton, Mako Oliveras, said he
would not be surprised if Murphy played in the big leagues this year, which jives well with what Omar Minaya said yesterday, that he would not be afraid to call up his top prospects to the Majors this year.
…i met and watched Murphy play earlier this season, and let me tell you, the kid can hit… even more impressive was how much of a gamer and hard worker he is… mid-interview, when he could have used my microphone as an excuse to avoid running laps, he bailed out on me so he could do sprints around the base paths, then came and finished the interview… i suspect Mets fans will love that…

great to hear about a kid who is WILLING to put in the hard work to make himself a better person…
Yeah, unlike that Wright fella… such a slacker!
did i say anything about wright? however, there are tons of young people all over who have talent but let it go to waste.
“there’s nothing worse than wasted talent”
Anyone else remember his decent hitting in spring training?
To a good eye, you could see that this guy can hit. I too watched him in the minors in AA ball and his mechanics are quite good. I would like to see him w/ the Mets this season but I suspect he’ll be a 40-man roster call up.
Bring it in AAA, Mruphy!!!
Yea if he starts to bring it in AAA, they might have to bring him up. Has he played OF at all this season?
I think they traded him, Carp and Evans all in the of. As far as I remember none of them were very successful.
He has played a few games in LF, but recently when Bingy was short on position players they went with Carp in LF and Murphy at 1B. This probably is more about Carp being a lesser defender than where they would prefer Murphy.
Anyone know how his glove is? I think I remember hearing that he just recently volunteered to play 2B at Binghamton. Anyone know how that’s working out?
I heard he committed a bunch of errors in his first few starts but he quickly adapted. There’s a good article on the minor league blog that explains examples of his creative glovework. He sounds very promising.
CITIZEN SNIIIIPPPPPSS!
I think he was originally a second basemen and then they moved him to third and then moved him back. I remember hearing he was a butcher at third but that he was very athletic and adapting quickly to being back at second.
so basically, he’s Ty Wigginton?
with a better bat
Wigginton has a career .780 OPS at the ML level. Dan Murphy has a career .787 OPS in the minors. He projects to have a solid bat, but it’s silly to state that his bat is better than an established ML player like Wigginton.
I’ve been making that comparison for a while now. He could be better, maybe a bit like Chone Figgins as well.
Nevermind he played 2nd in high school, so he third basemen when they drafted him.
apparently he was drafted in the 13th round too. If he can contribute talk about a find.
Any one heard anything on Church? I read somewhere that his scheduled minor league stint has been cancelled and that he is making the trip to Houston under the doctors care? The story made it sound vaguely like there might have been a “Set Back”?
Does anyone have an update?
Care to cite a source? sounds like BS
I wish I could, I was surfing this morning all over the place and came across the article, it was actually embedded in the article, the article wan’t specifically about Church. If I find it I’ll post it here.
I read that too, but I thought it was a couple of days ago (and as noted below, due to rain out).
It was on Metsblog. Yesterday or the day before. There was, indeed a report that Church is going to travel to Houston with the team instead of going down to play rehab games…i guess he’s not ready yet…
The minor league thing was cancelled probably because the games have been rained out for the past 3-4 days.
Hopefully Murphy’s done wasting his time at 3B now (who am I kidding?). Too bad he had to beg to be switched to 2B a couple months back when the Mets knew the day they drafted him he’d have no future at 3B in the organization.
Well his defense at 3B was poor, due mostly to his crappy footwork. Poor footwork is even more of a problem at 2B, which is why he struggled so mightily there in limited action.
Also, he never “begged”. He asked once and was given the opportunity.
BOO! I was planning on making a trip to Binghamton to see him and guys like Kunz.
sweet call him up
sounds like the next victor diaz
That makes no sense seeing how Victor Diaz had a terrible work ethic and was overweight.
How about Alex Ochoa? Talk about a promising “five tool” guy that went pretty much nowhere…
Dan Murphy isn’t a five-tool player.
Kent had a similar style of hitting and no fielding :D
the more i hear about this murphy kid the more i get excited. If he can play 2nd base at all he needs to be brought up this year.
he is not going to be brought up this year for the simple fact that there is damion easly, argenis reyes, and LUIS CASTILLO coming back. three guys, maybe as a september call up, he can hit off the bench, but i doubt it.
i think that moving murphy to second was cuz they liked his bat
but what about that guy reese havens that they had just drafted?
Reese is atleast a year away. I don’t you can realistically expect to see him until mid-season next at the earliest.
Reese might be moved to catcher. And he seems to have caught an injury bug. I think he’s being shutdown for a while.
3-5 weeks.
“Reese Havens is out three to five weeks at Brooklyn with a groin injury. Havens had been limited to DH duty because of a shoulder injury, but Mets VP Tony Bernazard indicated Havens would have been poised to begin playing shortstop soon without the second injury.”
So if this kid plays 3B and 2B, he is blocked for atleast 3 years at both positions. What would people think about moving Wright to 1B after the season and making Murphy your 3B
nope….it seems as though this guys has trouble fielding, so why would you move DW, how is a good fielder (while improving his throwing accuracy every year) for a guy who apparently cant field at all? makes no sense….sounds like the jose to 2nd move….just a really dumb thought
…how…should be who
Maybe we shoukd let Murphy get an at bat or two at AAA before we move an all-star away from 3B to make room for the kid at first.
Personally, I hope he develops as a 2B. If he can play defense and hit well then we can do a salary dump on Castillo down the road…even though Castillo is so deeply loved by all of us.
heh, people at the minor league blog were talking about moving Wright off 3B for Bowman.. who is a stellar defender and good with the bat, but is just now getting his first taste of AA pitching.
Funny how the Mets fans always expect our great players to move positions all the time.
HoJo to the OF
Samuel to the OF
Kent to 3B, and to 2B
Alfonso to 3B, to 2B, and to 3B again
Piazza to 1B
Wright to 1B
its good to have ‘ball players’ who will do whatever it takes, but why are we messing with a good thing?
… Reyes to 2B
I think if you’re going to move anyone it’s Murph.
I don’t think he’s blocked for 3 years. He probably won’t be ready by next season either if he just made the switch. If he’s ready by 2010 or late next year they can always eat the last 2 years or year of Castillo’s contract.
I think you can get better production next year by signing a guy to play 1B, keeping Wright at 3B, and sticking Murphy into LF.
Wright has been quite excellent at 3B recently, havent we noticed he hasnt had many bad throws lately?
I would like to see Murphy in LF, and O-Dog at second next year. Eat Castillos contract and and spin him somewhere for solid middle relief.
That probably will not happen, but I still like the idea of Murphy in LF this year and see what he can do at second next. I have a feeling that he might be Dan Ugglaish at second.
Carp at first and Murphy at second. I wonder how that would go…..interesting none-the-less.
I feel Carp’s glove gives us the need to send him somewhere in the American League.
Oh, and Reese Havens will not be up for at least another two years, so don’t seat it.
Seriously…where exactly do all of you who are talking about these players in the minor leagues, get your information from….have you seen these players play? are you listening to other bloggers here or elsewhere? i mean seriously i have never heard such raw stupidity about players the are in the MINOR LEAGUES!!!!! players that other teams DONT WANT !!!! now some of you have Carp at first and Murphy at second ? what….the way things are going right now….delgado will be back and castillo will be at first (no one is eating that contract)…then you have this other guy Havens who is at BROOKLYN…i repeat BROOKLYN!!!!! he is NO WHERE NEAR coming to the majors “by the middle of next year”….these posts have seriously made me question the intelligence of the average met fan….i really hope its just a few fools that have no clue, but the more i read here, im really not too sure
We have to be careful about moving Havens to Catcher. Pena is still only 18 and is showing improvement. No reason to make that move just yet.
It’s nice to see that we have another possible jewel in the farm system, but what exactly does this do for us now? We’re set at 3B with Wright and when Castillo gets back this week, we’ll have three second basemen.
good. let the prospects slowly bulld up value, so other teams can slobber on them for a trade. lol
but he cant be any good. in fact, I am sure h sucks rocks. I mean, all the “experts” said the Mets farm is barren, and they have no one that will make an impact (or have a future in the majors) for at least 10 yeats or so!
and yes, this was done with a nod to MLS!
Man, the idea that Castillo and Delgado will be the opening day right side of the infield when Citifield opens is truly depressing.
I appreciate the hot streak CD is having, but accept the gift from the heavens, don’t get greedy, and move on next year.
Keeping CD and LC after this year sure isn’t going the right direction toward getting younger and more athletic.
And if Omar really wants to, there has to be a way to unload Castillo in the off season. Right? Please?
is delgado afree agent after this season?if not maybe we should see what can be had for him?
as for castiilo houston wanted him too when the mets signed him.
castillo ,mike carp and a low level pitching prospect for hunter pence.
