Justin Terranova of the New York Post recently conducted an interview with SNY’s Keith Hernandez.
Among the topics discussed include, if Jerry Manuel deserves credit for the Mets turnaround, what to expect from Pedro Martinez and if he is concerned about criticising players during the broadcast.

2B Felipe Lopez was given his outright release following Thursday’s game, ending his disappointing tenure with the Nationals. Lopez, acquired as part of an eight-player trade with Cincinnati in July 2006, hit only .245 with nine homers and 50 RBIs last season, then hit .234 with two homers and 25 RBIs this season. With newly acquired 2B Emilio Bonifacio ready to take over at second base, the Nationals had no choice but to release Lopez after not finding any willing trade partners. “We tried to deal him,” GM Jim Bowden said. “We weren’t able to do it. I think it’s better for him and for the club to just part ways at this time.” Lopez, who is making $4.9 million, said he will try to sign with another club.
Would you guys sign him? I think for the right $$ he might be worth taking a chance on….
He’s doing worse than Luis Castillo. Horrible, horrible idea.
uh….add lo duca to that list
And J. Estrada was released as well. So….for those that don’t like Schneider, didn’t like that trade, we very well could have been stuck with LoDuca and/or Estrada this season and been in worse shape than we are with Schneider.
Good catchers are not easy to come by and with back up man Ramon, it’s not a bad duo for now.
Or maybe they were just stuck with a bad barely-AAA team down in DC. You never know if either one would fit in with a team like this. Probly not, but still. Perspective is, look at the team too. And would loduca have been hurt twice with DL stints if he had been playing differently.
Cest la vie.
Since Schneider is worse than Castro and even Robinson Cancel, we would have been better off without Schneider. Estradea and LoDuca would have been on DL and guys who could hit and field would have played. Schneider is horrible at the plate and his game calling is very over rated.
But who then would be our primary catcher? I can’t be Castro. Overuse of him catching guarantees a trip to the DL. He’s got arthritis of the back. That’s what landed him on the DL coming down the stretch last year…..
* It can’t
I wouldn’t sign him. I don’t see a point to it. He is worse than the options the mets have. Maybe to a low cost minor league contract but not more than that.
I like how Keith says that he was hired to be honest. He is one of the few broadcasters that will actually criticize the team he was hired to cover. If you watch the Yankees their broadcasters just suck up to the team even when the team is not playing well. Keith criticized Reyes for lazy play and he was completely right. Reyes is a great player that sometimes doesn’t play up to his potential. We all see it and it was great to have Keith saying the same things we were thinking. I really think that Keith has turned into the mascot for the Mets! lol
Keith is great, but he will NEVER be as great as Mr. Met.
Amen to that. Evidence. Mr. Met will live for infinity years. Beat that, Keith.
Just curious, what does Reyes have to do to live up to his potential?
Obviously it’s something more than being the best player on the team, because he’s already that.
Whew! Deadline day has arrived at last. Who are we getting? Manny or Bay? I sure do hope it’s Manny!
We got Manny AND Bay!
Oh my goodness!!! I’m very happy. Very happy!
Who did we give up? Please tell me nothing more than Cow-Bell-Man and some of that still water that sits on the painted concrete floor in the grandstands.
I heard that the Yanks just signed Victor Zambrano. Now I KNOW those guys are desperate idiots!
Why is it that when Minaya signs a piece of crap its called a low risk high reward move but when anyone else does it, its called being an idiot. So tell me the difference between a Lima and a Zambrano signing please.
Uh-oh! Your Pinstripes are showing…
Lima is at least entertaining when he flips out when he allows 14 runs.
Not that I’m saying the Lima thing was a brilliant move, but as I remember (and I’m probably wrong) it was an off season thing. Signing Victor now looks like they think of him as a savior.
VICTAH IS HERE! THE YANKEES ARE BAHK!
Thanks Ms. Waldman
I dunno, to me it looks like a reaction to what they were and were not able to accomplish before the non-waiver trade deadline. Who knows, maybe it works out, and if it doesn’t, all it cost them was a little money. It’s like the MLB equivalent of the Claw game on the boardwalk. You drop in a quarter and try to get lucky. If you don’t, you’re just out a quarter. Count on Minaya making a few of these moves in the coming weeks. It’s just smart business, whether it works out or not.
Well, the Yanks also signed Jon Leiber to a two year deal, when they already knew he would miss year one with Tommy John surgery. That’s a high risk, low reward deal. I think the track record is the reason we call it low risk, high reward.
Sure, there is low risk in signing Victor Zambrano, but the Yanks make a habit of constantly signing players (Sexson is a prime example) whom they will realize sucks and have no use for within a month. Then, they will replace that guy with another. Thing is, Cashman has this much room ( ) to make mistakes and correct them, while the next closest team probably has this much room ( ).
Cashman has this much room (………………………………….)
Nest closest has this much room

genital herpes?
this was in reply to the question “what’s the difference between Lima and Zambrano?”…
belated HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Psssst!
Cashman? Wrong Zambrano.
For what it’s worth, the Mets promoted Danny Murphy to AAA after last night’s (B-Mets) game. It’ll be interesting to see where they play him, but the kid can rake.
Foxsports says the Mets are big losers at deadline:
The Mets had many needs, and they filled not one of them. A bat for the outfield corner? Needed that. Insurance for a rotation that includes the aging, injury-prone Pedro Martinez and John Maine and his strained rotator cuff? Needed that. Another arm for the bullpen? Needed that, too. Heck, they could also stand an upgrade at second base. Yet they got nothing. It’s no guarantee that Ryan Church will be productive once he returns from tandem concussions, and Fernando Tatis is a prime candidate to regress in the coming weeks. With so many outfield bats in play at the deadline, it’s particularly disappointing that GM Omar Minaya failed to address that glaring need.
And why would the media call the Mets losers of the trade deadline? Hmmm… which headline sells more papers “Mets stand pat, hold onto prospects” or “Manny Mania: Mets add slugging diva to outfield, empty farm”?
The media can’t report on the value of investing in a system and then having the patience to wait for the rewards because first, it’s a boring read, and second, it doesn’t fit in with our instant gratification culture. If the Mets had traded Jon Niese and Dan Murphy to the Rockies for Brian Fuentes, they would have been listed among the “Winners”, just like they were when they traded minor league outfielder Jason Bay and others to the Padres for Steve Reed. I’d rather be winners on the field than in the Foxsports opinion section.
If we have a lot of needs what did they expect us to do? I mean it’s one thing to go all in on a big bat when that big bat is all you need to get to the post-season, but it doesn’t make any sense to give up a significant package for a big bat when you have multiple holes. And besides the Phillies, the Marlins, the Cardinals all have holes too. It’s not like we’re the only flawed team.
Yes, Omar played his hand as well as he could have. He sniffed around for players that could potentially help us out, he tested the waters when it can to the big ticket players, he even tried thinking outside the box, but at the end of the day there was nothing he could do that wouldn’t have been irresponsible. And he had the stones to do nothing.
And it’s not necessarily over yet, either. Omar’s pretty good at the intricacies of post-deadline horse trading. You never know…
You just know it was really hard for Omar to holster that “Itchy Trigger Finger” of his and just stay pat. For once, I’m glad he did. The asking price for most of these guys was way too high, especially for the ones that would basically be only a two-month rental. I’m pretty confident Omar will pick-up a couple of missing pieces off waivers, they won’t be sexy, block-buster deals but they will help the team fill in some holes. Good job Omar.
I love how people on here wanted us to trade the farm for crap…
Hello, we werent getting Bay or Manny, and the pitching choices all sucked….get over yourselves!
So, the team didn’t hustle under Willie this year. Hmmmm.
I certainly don’t think it’s outlandish to suggest, like Manny not hustling because he wanted to be traded, that there was a cause and effect relationship there.
Yup. Keith stating what those of us with eyes to see had noticed for months with Willie.
