News: Maine to Miss Start
By Regis Courtemanche - Aug 2, 2008 9:31 am

John Maine will not make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the Astros due to a strained rotator-cuff.

The Mets will also use a spot starter in a makeup game against the Pirates on August 11th. The buzz is that LHP Jon Niese will be called up from triple-A New Orleans to make the start.

No surprise there. Ron Darling said yesterday afternoon on the radio that in his opinion, the varied injury setbacks that Maine has been suffering this season suggest a more serious injury for which he has been compensating. To borrow a popular Metsblog word, Ugh.

  2. EliPorter says:

fyi, dan murphy got called up, according to adam rubin

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

to the majors or the triple A?

      • GravediggerHebner says:

According to the article that EliPorter mentions, after spending one game in AAA, Evans is on his way to Houston to join the major league roster.

      • mikepelfreyismyguy says:

        triple A fortunately

        • therealsince86 says:

I think it’s to the majors.

        • mikepelfreyismyguy says:

it was triple A, he is not promoted as of now.

Daniel Murphy’s Triple-A career lasts one day, gets call to Mets

HOUSTON – Daniel Murphy’s Triple-A career lasted one day. The 23-year-old prospect is expected to join the Mets for Saturday night’s game against the Astros, the Daily News has learned.

        • jstocks5 says:

on my way to modell’s to get a murphy jersey.. jk.. but, best of luck to him.. he kid has earned it. on the maine subject, all i have to say is sheesh, could it be serious where he has to have surgery?

  3. Gina says:

I really feel like we can’t catch a break. Are we just moving everyone up 1 in the rotation or is someone else starting tomorrow.

  4. Cliff Pink Floyd says:

Anyone else think maybe Niese is being moved along too quickly now? I know he’s our top starting pitching prospect but he just made his first AAA start last week..

    • therealsince86 says:

Its only a spot start. Teams do that from AA all the time, let alone AAA.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

If you think that’s quick, check out Dan Murphy.

I have mixed feelings. I have no ’stat’ to verify it, but it seems to me that many other teams routinely fill ‘holes’ with their own actual prospects, not AAAA retreads or waiver acquisitions. I’m more excited about the seeming change in philosophy than I am worried about the players being rushed. Having said that, due to his constantly missing significant time due to injury, I hope they do NOT bring up Fernando Martinez soon.

    • Nate W. says:

yes, but if its only for one start its no big deal.

It should be a confidence boost for Niese that he has jumped ahead of the whole AAA staff for this start.

This is probably more about the Mets having 23 straight games, and not wanting to push Maine, Santana, and Pedro.

  5. therealsince86 says:

Useless info but Rubin also said “Here’s another reason for Oliver Perez’s recent success. He’s incorporated running stadium stairs as part of his daily routine. Perez’s body fat has dropped from 17 to 13 percent since spring training.” That shows someone who we really should resign.

Dan Murphy getting called up = Bye bye Marlon?

    • therealsince86 says:

Most likely A. Reyes or Cancel. Marlon has a contract for next season.

      • thatpreludeguy says:

Marlon is signed through NEXT year? I know he’s a stand up guy and has a great clubhouse presence but his bat has been dead since late last year. Without getting plate time I cant see it coming around.

We dont have any OF prospects except for FMart we can give some time? It would nice for Tatis and Endy to get some rest.

        • Gina says:

As far as I know Evans is the closet thing we have to a of prospect other than F-mart, although I think Murphy has played some of too.

        • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

I agree that Anderson will never turn around with his backside glued to the bench, but he’s hurting us right now, and it’s starting to get to the part of the season where that matters. I’m not sure how many more at bats we can take on the chin for the sake of Marlon’s potential reawakening, Let’s face it: the chances of that are starting to appear to be slim to none.

I don’t know anything about Anderson’s contract, but couldn’t he spend the rest of it (or at least the next few months of it) in New Orleans? Or does it not work that way?

Regarding resting outfielders, I agree that Endy needs some downtime, but I see no reason to rest Tatis. I don’t think he wants to rest, and his bat has been a godsend.

    • Nate W. says:

Nick Evans would be my guess.

      • Nate W. says:

actually Argenis Reyes would be a likely candidate as well if they want to play Murphy at 2B

  7. nysportsfan16 says:

Dan Murphy is getting the call up. He has played mostly at 3rd but also has seen time at 2nd, 1st, and LF

  8. therealsince86 says:

Murphy should start and bat 2nd. His OBP as a rookie would be higher than Endy no bat just glove Chavez.

  9. Gina says:

Murphy isn’t on the 40 man roster is he. I know we have a bunch of guys on the roster who could be moved to the 60 day dl but how exactly does Murphy being called up work.

    • Nate W. says:

They have room on the 40 for one more guy right now.

They have plenty of guys who could go on the 60 day DL and be replaced by others being newly added to the 40 man.

plenty of room for Murphy and Niese

      • therealsince86 says:

I think they want to keep those DL guys for September call ups so they will be elligible for the playoffs.

        • Nate W. says:

But they don’t need all of them.

especially if Murphy is on the 40 man roster before Sept 1st.

They have Pagan, Nixon and Alou to choose from. :(

        • Gina says:

And as far as I know those guys won’t be ready for September anyway, or El Duque he’s on the 40 man roster isn’t he. And I think Vargas is too.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

My informal count of the mets dot com 40 man shows 37 guys so they should just be able to add him.

      • Nate W. says:

mlb.com seems to have lost track of Armas and Pagan, its 39

        • GravediggerHebner says:

Aha, thank you. I would make a bad joke about losing track of them, but I think both those guys have merit in a fluid roster context so I won’t.

    • therealsince86 says:

      Prob. DFA Cancel again.

  10. metterman says:

i think armas was DFA’d so the count should be 48 with pagan, I say lets see what niese and murphy can do. Evens jumped straight to the bigs from AA and the guy had 3 doubles his first game. I say there’s no time like the present, Eisely, Castillo and reyes have been less then steller so why not give the kid a chance. as for niese, i’d rather see him get a shot then a guy like armas, cordero or figueroa

  11. nobeers says:

It really seems like Omar is hoping for a miracle at this point. Unfortunately in August with all the positional problems that we have it may just take one.
