The Mets (58–53) lost to the Astros (53–57) by the score of 4 to 0 in Houston this afternoon.

- Oliver Perez let up a home run to Ty Wigginton for the game’s first run, followed by a double from Wigginton, a double from Hunter Pence and a double from Humberto Quintero, and that was pretty much it, as the Astros jumped out to a four-run lead that they never relinquished.
- The Mets left the bases loaded twice, once in the fourth and once in the fifth.
- Robinson Cancel was thrown out trying to steal third base with two outs and David Wright at the plate, against a left-handed pitcher.
- On two different occasions, Nick Evans made a nice pick up off the tall wall in right field, and then tossed out the runner trying to take second base.
- The Mets finished with one win in six games on the road trip.
- Eddie Kunz made his major-league debut, pitching a scoreless inning in the seventh. He looked good. He clearly has a strong sinker, and a quick fastball, which will come in handy when brought in to games with a runner on base.
- Dan Murphy reminds me of Don Mattingly.
- Hmmm, ‘Danny Baseball.’
- The Mets have not scored in a run in their last 16 innings.
The Mets are off tomorrow, and resume play on Tuesday in Shea Stadium for the start of a three-game series with the Padres.
The Mets have announced LHP Billy Wagner will be unavailble for today’s game as he has been sent back to New York to be examined for a stiff forearm.
Jerry Manuel said the recently called up Eddie Kunz may be the team’s closer for today’s game.
The Mets announced today RHP John Maine has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to continue soreness in his left shoulder.
Maine can be reactivated from the disabled list on August 13.
Mets pitching prospect Eddie Kunz was promoted from Double-A Binghamton to take Maine’s spot on the roster.

In the Braves injury market, Chipper Jones is up as he expects to return to the lineup Friday, while Tim Hudson is down, deciding on Tommy John surgery.
Elijah Duke’s injury Saturday night was just a charlie horse.
Scott Olsen, starting for the Marlins today, has seen his strikeout rate drop each season since his 2005 debut. His K per 9 over the years were 9.3 in 2005, 8.3 in 2006, 6.8 in 2007, 4.8 in 2008. Fewer strikeouts mean more balls in play and more pressure on the Marlins defense.

According to Adam Rubin at the Daily News, the Mets will promote Eddie Kunz from double-A Binghamton to provide the team with bullpen help.
Kunz has 27 saves so far this season with the B-Mets, and is sporting an ERA of 2.79.
…any help is welcome, especially after last night…with jon niese probably set to join the club soon, and kunz on his way now, my fear is that they are needing to move these guys along too quickly…however, i’m pretty sure, especially in niese’s potential case, that this is just a temporary solution to help fill some holes in the pitching staff…
