postGame: Astros 4 Mets 0
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 3, 2008 4:54 pm

The Mets (58–53) lost to the Astros (53–57) by the score of 4 to 0 in Houston this afternoon.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

  • Oliver Perez let up a home run to Ty Wigginton for the game’s first run, followed by a double from Wigginton, a double from Hunter Pence and a double from Humberto Quintero, and that was pretty much it, as the Astros jumped out to a four-run lead that they never relinquished.
  • The Mets left the bases loaded twice, once in the fourth and once in the fifth.
  • Robinson Cancel was thrown out trying to steal third base with two outs and David Wright at the plate, against a left-handed pitcher.
  • On two different occasions, Nick Evans made a nice pick up off the tall wall in right field, and then tossed out the runner trying to take second base.
  • The Mets finished with one win in six games on the road trip.
  • Eddie Kunz made his major-league debut, pitching a scoreless inning in the seventh.  He looked good.  He clearly has a strong sinker, and a quick fastball, which will come in handy when brought in to games with a runner on base.
  • Dan Murphy reminds me of Don Mattingly.
  • Hmmm, ‘Danny Baseball.’
  • The Mets have not scored in a run in their last 16 innings.

The Mets are off tomorrow, and resume play on Tuesday in Shea Stadium for the start of a three-game series with the Padres.

yaa ok like barry bonds will help. itll be just like having moises alou there only with worse hitting ad with our luck hell pbly get injured in the first week. i think they need 1 or 2 new outfielders 3 or 4 new relievers and a new second basemen.

Don’t Boo yet , and those getting off the bandwagon, we have peaks and valleys. We are in yuet another valley. Look the Dodgers will be hosting the Phillies on 8/11. I think the Phils and a west coast swing may help things. I would not be surprised to see the Marlins back in 1st for a short period of time. If we can stay close enough the next two weeks , it could be a very Exciting September. I think all three teams will be in fiRst place at one time or another this month. Phils and Fish square off again. I think the young kids called up will help in Sept tremendously. I have been following murphy all year. . This kid should not be tradE bait . Kunz maybe the answer in the pen. Yes they are young but they will provide a solid future. Evans is steady . Carp would be the only guy from Binghamton who could bE trade bait.

Betting on other teams to lose because you cant win has always been the sign of a solid team in any sport.

      FIRE JERRY

        Jerry sucks.

        • KHERUB VON KHERUB says:

BITE YOUR TONGUE!! Manuel is an awesome manager.

          K ~

        • MudvilleNine says:

Jerry couldnt get himself arrested as a manager. In game managerial decisions and bullpen use is horrible. Makes one wonder whether Willie was going too much with Jerry’s advice from the bench. Jerry might have eased the tensions amongst the players and shown he’s in control, but thats about it. Example. Man on third, 2 outs, 8th inning, he allows Evans to bat against the righty instead of pinch hitting Murphy (LH). If he pinch hits Murphy there, he puts the incoming pitcher in that spot in the lineup and puts Chavez in the outfield batting in the pitchers spot. I know one run means nothing but he turned around and pinch hit Murphy the next inning anyway. He’s just another american league guy that cant handle the national league game.

        • KHERUB VON KHERUB says:

First of all the difference between Manuel and Randolph is night and day. Manuel actually has a clue to utilize a bullpen, and in fact in my opinion has a great feel for the game. You said it yourself….he used Murphy as a pinch hitter the next inning….that’s what he was doing…thinking ahead, and using Murphy in a spot where he wouldn’t have to burn a position player. You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about, and your ignorance is my undying joy because I will most definitely laugh a belly laugh at your inane blathering later on this evening as I exploit to a few baseball stalwart friends of mine….HA HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHA!!!!! AHHhh hHAHAHa see, I was gonna stop before the second rendition of AHhh Hahaaa’s, but you’re so off the mark I opted for a concurrent AHAHha HAHAHHAAA’S!!! At your expense. Know why? Because your ignorance is my bliss. Please, with all sincerity I implore you to reply…I could certainly use another laugh…..

that was intentional…no accidental omission of words there….Charly…do you mind if I call you Charly, Charly? How you doin Charly? How you like your new name Charly? How’s it feel to be called Charly, Charly??

r u stupid jus cause of a 4 game losing u wnt 2 fire manuel i hope they bring him bak next year

        • Gina says:

No I want them to fire him because he’s a mediocre manager and we should be able to do better.

        • ahingo says:

I’m not sure who to blame this bullpen funk on, but Jerry has been overusing the bullpen significantly and muniz is a complete joke of a long man, he can only give you like 1 or 2 innings, that also overworks the bullpen

    • metsfan42793 says:

      fire omar!!!!!!!!

  3. teufelshuffle86 says:

ugh. This team just needs to figure out how to put 9 innings together at this point. Hopefully a return home will wake the bats up. Right now they look exactly like they did back in May, no life at all. Hopefully they can come out of it but this is a bad team right now.

  4. calzone45 says:

Gee, I was almost kinda missing the tanking Mets of April-June! Welcome back frustration!

  5. metsfan42793 says:

Unfortunately I have tickets to the game on Saturday against the Marlins. When I bought the tickets the Mets were on the 10 game winning streak. I was fooled by this team. I can’t believe Omar did not make a move at the deadline. At this rate, there is no way this team will play baseball in October. Whoever thought this team was better with Jerry as the manager are complete fools. The fact is…. the players suck. This team can’t even score one run when the bases are loaded. This team is pathetic. I am starting to lose faith in this team very quickly. They better figure something out.

    • MetfaninFL says:

Under Willie we were 34-36. Under Jerry we are 24-17. Am I a fool for believing the W-L record?

      • The Slider says:

        Yes.

Jerry got a bump from the cloud lifted from the team when Willie was fired. Jerry has made a bunch of boneheaded moves and the player continued to make stupid plays on the field.

        • Gina says:

Agree 100x. The team’s improvement is more in spite of Jerry than because of it, he’s not much better at x’s & o’s than Willie. Regardless of what happens this season we should be looking at other options for manager this off-season.

        • MetfaninFL says:

It doesn’t matter how he got the bump in W-L. To me it just matters THAT he got a bump in W-L. While we might not be better due to his superior managerial skills we are better even if its just because it took some pressure off. That is a job of a manager: put your team in a position to win. For the Mets to win they needed to get rid of Willie.

        • ahingo says:

it’s not the managers it’s the players. Beltran and Castillo have underachieved, and Wagner has blown a huge # of saves. I don’t like Manuel playing Nick Evans though. Evans sucks.

      • tufflesheufle says:

Take away the six games when SF & COL didn’t even show up – and made the bullpen look unhittable – and Jerry is 18-17.

        • ToastyJoe says:

I can play that game, too. Take away the 17 they lost, and they’re 24-0. Gee, this is fun.

        • mylegshurt says:

While we’re at it, let’s not count the three games the Phillies won against that American Legion team we have here in Washington. Wheeeee!

        • el_giacomo says:

You’re right, this is fun! But instead of picking out a handful of games here and there, howabout we just take away all 53 Mets losses, turn them into wins, and now they are sitting at 111-0 and are the best team in the history of Major League Baseball!

oooooooohhhh and while we’re at it, can we turn all the Phillies, Braves, and Marlins wins into losses too? I’ll be nice and spare the Nats…they’ve gone through enough this year…

    • Gland says:

So you bought the tickets when they were doing well, now you don’t want them when they’re doing badly. Bandwagon much?

    • KHERUB VON KHERUB says:

I’ll take those tickets off your hands you ingrate. GIVE THEM TO ME!!!…..NOWWW!!!!

the mets will go on a big winning streak including a sweep of the two games series with the phillies, by the end of the month the mets will have a 4 game lead. this team will not collapse again, you will see guys……LETS GO METS!!!!!! AND THIS IS NOT SARCASM

    • casey s. says:

well, to be fair, a team cannot collapse if it isn’t frontrunning.

    • sincekindergarten says:

Exactly. The pendulum swings both ways. It was waaay over one way at the beginning of the season, thenit swung back for a bit, then it swings the wrong way for a bit. If the pattern holds, that means it should come roaring back our way for the next 55 games or so.

      • m00kie says:

ohhhh, so you mean this is a baseball season? See, I was confused, because football is starting again, I though teams could go an entire season and only lose 2 or 3 games.

        ;)

checkout road records around the league, most are abysmal.

and to all those saying “we should have gotten manny, look how well he’s doing..” well he’s happy he’s being left alone, do you really think he would have come to new york and been left alone? uhhh nope.

as far as barry bonds goes … gimme a friggin break.

    • 2008mets19 says:

rite now thts kinda hard 2 beleve espicially if wagner goes 2 tha DL

  7. fsolomon75 says:

10 game streak aside, this team has just been inconsistent all year, whether it’s a lack of clutch hitting or someone in the bullpen who can get outs.

    • scottykick says:

FIRE Jerry! FIRE Omar! FIRE The Wilpons! FIRE The Idiot Fans who still support this dismall franchise! Were does the line for the Pirates bandwagon begin? at least when they do not make the playoffs, it’s no big shock and no major disappointment. When Omar sat on his hands during the trade deadline I said the Mets would finish 3rd, looks like I was giving them to much credit. At this rate they will finish 1 game ahead of the Nats.

This Team is Pathetic, but that is not breaking news. yeah go get Livian Hernandez, that will fix the problem Omar.

  8. kd bart says:

Ingredients for a 1-5 trip. Poor bullpen work and not taking advantage of the numerous scoring opportunities presented. Team actually hit in the .260s for the week but only scored 19 runs in six games while leaving 45 on base. Today was the topper. Shutout despite 14 reaching base. Left 11 of them on base.

  9. lindro says:

i think by now we should all be used to the idea that it is a long season,, that will be full of streaks. lets not all give up on this team again, only to be waxing poetic about them in two weeks when they win 5 in a row. while 5 over .500 and 2′ games out isnt ideal, it does constitute “in the thick of it” and i can live with it. team needs to come home, take a day off and be ready to make up for this trip back at shea. on the bright side kuntz looks like he could be a useful guy, as does murphy, so maybe they will be big contributors the last 2 months. this has been my mets fan public service announcement.

  10. Xavier22 says:

This team is in desperate need of a decent bat at the bottom of the lineup. Having someone like Nady or Blake (let alone Bay) batting in the 6 or 7 hole could have been the difference in a couple of these games this week.

At least Beltran is getting some hits in the 2 hole.

  11. BigPelf4prez says:

Cancel and evans must go. FIRE OMAR. With the pen in tatters, they are goin nowhere

    • danlx13 says:

I agree 100 persent..I would have pulled cancel out of the game after he got caught stealing third with wright up against the lefty which was the third out of the inning.

      • AngryFan says:

Just like last season. They made planty of idiot plays under Willie also….this team never changes

    • ahingo says:

agreed, but bring up Fernando Martinez and Johnathan Niece I wanna see why Omar is so fixed on these guys

  12. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

This all started when Geico came on board to sponsor MetsBlog. Fire the gecko!

Slumps happen. Doesn’t necessarily make us the worst team ever. However, this team has, I would say, about two weeks (at most) to right themselves, and if they don’t by then, you can pretty much put a fork in them.

Such a letdown from July. Very disheartening.

  13. kd bart says:

Just a bad week. Where everything was off. Teams have them. Have to take advantage of three at home versus the Padres and win the series versus the Marlins.

    • AngryFan says:

Sorry, but when you spend the 1st part of the season “having a bad week” (or 8) and need a 10 game streak just to get back into it, you’ve pretty much used your “bad week” allotment

      • therealsince86 says:

Ok so if you are playing so poorly over the corse of 100 games then how does 10% of those games change the season so much?

        • Two-By-Four says:

It actually can happen if the team plays .500 baseball over 90% of the season and wins 16 games over the other 10%. It can also happen if the teams above you are as bad as you are. Remember 1973.

Losing 2 of 3 to the Marlins didn’t bother me since the Marlins are at least as good as the Mets. Now being swept by the woebegone Astros is a horse of another color.

  14. lindro says:

to the mets fan who bought his tickets during the ten game win streak, maybe you can call the mets front office and ask if they will buy the tickets back from you, then what you should do is pick a new team to root for, the team doesnt need fair weather fans

    • Two-By-Four says:

Strange as that may seem to you, yes they do. The revenue brought in by the so called fair weather fans helps pay for the talent that puts a winning team in your building.

  15. maybealittlemoredelgado says:

    Fire Omar?
    Maybe.

    Fire Cancel?
    Definitely.

    • ToastyJoe says:

He should have been cut on the spot for that attempted steal of third. He should’ve walked off the field, into the dugout, gone directly into the clubhouse and cleaned out his locker, and taken a cab to the airport, and hopped a flight to whereever it is that he lives. I’m not even joking.

      • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

And what a stupid look on his face afterwards! Simply infuriating.

      • ahingo says:

lol, why the hell is a catcher stealing. I know he has decent wheels for his position but he’s still well below average in speed. And who steals 3rd with 2 outs, you’re already in scoring position.

  16. ToastyJoe says:

    “The Mets are off tomorrow…”

    Thank GOD.

  17. BigPelf4prez says:

    Must sweep the dreadful padres.

  18. MetfaninFL says:

This was a terrible road trip but lets have some perspective here. Worst case scenario we are down 3 games to the Phils after tonight. We are going home where statiscally we play a lot better. FLA and PHI are playing this week our games against the Padres instantly become huge. We will be rested with the off day. We have Pelfrey and Santana going in the series who are our two most reliable pitchers right now. I looked on MLB.com and we aren’t facing Peavy in any of the first 2 games so if he pitches it will be against Santana which will automatically keep us in the game. The Padre pitchers don’t look like world beaters in the series. I know everyone is going to say that we don’t beat crappy teams but since Jerry took over we took care of business at home. My point is that I’m not worrying until we lose at home to a bad team.

    • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

“our games against the Padres instantly become huge”

      Thats what Im afraid of.

    • scottykick says:

Santana pitching is not something to look foward to, unless he pitches 9 innings it will be lost to the Pen

    • 2008mets19 says:

ye but even if santana pitches aginst peavy he need 2 pitch a complete game 2 get a win it seems like tha bullpen is terrible wen he pitches

      • ahingo says:

complete game would be nice, but 8 innings is crucial cause they don’t have a solid 8th inning guy. Kunz can close but other than that they got nothin’

  19. metsguppy says:

This team is a joke. They cry for every excuse they can come up with without taking ANY effort to play. The offense is a joke, the defense is a joke, the pitching is a joke. If any one of those actually somehow works the other two screw the game over anyways. How many times have they left the bases loaded and scored NO runs? Jerry needs to kick some players in the head and get them to actually try. Wright needs to sit a few games too because he has not done anything to help. Getting 0-2 at every at bat is not going to help the team. This team will end up in 3rd place on the season because they have gone back to not trying. This is the same exact team that didn’t work under Willie and its still playing like it too.

    • letz_go_metz says:

“Jerry needs to kick some players in the head and get them to actually try.” – good one!

That’s pretty much it. Same problem Willie had; big league players with guaranteed contracts who basically don’t show up for a lot of big at bats. I think Jerry has done a better job than Willie in terms of motivating guys like Delgado. As a team they’re slipping back into that mediocrity again. I think a manager has to be awfully good and lucky to get his guys to perform at times like this. It’s just weird the way they approach an at bat. If there’s an opposite of “eye of the tiger” these guys seem to have it.

I love seeing Kunz up here. He’s going to have to learn how to field the bunt though! I want to see Bobby Parnell up too. The bullpen is worn out and needs some fresh arms. Good guys in our pen, but overused and toasted around the edges. Don’t know if Duaner will ever be back to where he was, it may take quite a while.

WIth guys like Evans, Kunz, Murphy and Parnell (maybe Niese too) the team gets much younger. Young guys have a lot to prove. They hustle and that can motivate the veterans to put out more effort.

To those who think we should have traded all these young guys for one outfield bat, I ask you, who do we get to fill in the inevitable holes when guys like Wagner go down with injury?

      • ahingo says:

Evans is useless. And I’d almost say that this is a transition year for the mets. Next season they lose pedro and delgado. Unfortunatly Castillo’s still here but they can gradually bring in young guys and build a new team.

  20. Genesis Does says:

If only we were able to match the four pieces of trash that the Yankees sent over to the Pirates. Now I have to hear Michael Kay gush about OUR right fielder and his SIX rbis today, while our bullpen is in shambles. Im sure they’ll pull out of it. There’s no way the team can collapse for 8 weeks. But the back end of the bullpen needs to seriously be reconsidered in the offseason. Start with giving K-rod the contract that he wants.

    • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

NO! look at what happens to pitchers after a season with an obscene amount of saves. there’s a track record, and it’s not pretty.

    • kd bart says:

The great Yankee bullpen blew an 8-5 lead in the eighth by giving up 4 runs. The great Angel bullpen in turn blew the one run lead by giving up 6 in the bottom of the eighth.

    • casey s. says:

I don’t know what stung more: watching Nady have his “signature” welcome to the Yankees moment or Ron Darling gushing about it on TBS (I refuse to watch al Yankazera and the Mets weren’t on DirecTV MLB EI today).

      • nrmax88 says:

I am happy for X. I think we have to stop as a whole, rooting so hard against the Yankees. It cannot be good for karma. Besides, I am glad we didnt give up any thing too valuable for nady because I dont think he value will ever be higher then it is this year.

  21. BigPelf4prez says:

We face young baek and banks

  22. kd bart says:

The week could’ve been worse. You could be the Brewers. Went into last Sunday tied for first with four with the Cubs upcoming at home. Get swept by the Cubs and are noe 5 out.

    • ahingo says:

yeah but the Brewers still lead the wild card. They could care less about the division. Mets need the division

  23. metsflip says:

Why were the Mets good in 06?
A rock solid bullpen and the tremondous extra bats of Paul Lo Duca and ecspecially Jose Valentin
    Thats what made it happen
And thats why its not happening now

  24. Gary Busey says:

the Astros jumped out to a four-run lead that they never relinquished

    Wait, teams can do that?

  25. AzMetsFan says:

Originally i was complaining that the game wasn’t on DirecTV’s Extra Inning, but I think they did me a favor today.

At least Kunz looked okay, from what I hear anyway

  26. Fiya Minaya says:

An intelligence-challenged team. I almost feel bad at how dumb a lot of these players are..

    • metsflip says:

No offense to anyone but of is the Hispanics who are usually making the mental mistakes and get into the slumps…
And thats 90% of the team

    • The Slider says:

Exactly which ones? (maybealittlemoredelgado wants to know who you are referring to.)

      • metsflip says:

Beltran, Feliciano, Castillo, cancel, Reyes (only on defense), Perez, Sanchez..

        • The Slider says:

Reyes on the base paths can be a bit of an adventure too. Remember, Friday night (I think) – Reyes almost got picked off twice at first before ultimately being thrown out trying to steel third base?

I think Reyes has been thrown out like 12 times already this year.

        • nrmax88 says:

Reyes has also been by far our best player and is a gold glove type shortstop. He will be fine. I am more worried about Wright and his new tendency of trying to hit a homerun every single time he gets an at bat.

        • Gina says:

Because Wagner, Wright, Heilman, Schneider, Maine and Pelfrey and Scho, at least early, have been perfect? Everyone on the team is struggling, it probably just seems like it’s mostly hispanic players because we have mostly hispanic players.

        • mylegshurt says:

I need this settled once and for all — is Schneider Hispanic?

        • erkifish26 says:

          No, he’s from Kenya.

        • ahingo says:

Reyes has been the Mets best player. And Wright keeps striking out in big spots. And what about Wagner and Heilman. The blame is on everyone regardless of race. And almost all teams are heavily hispanic now.

  27. AngryFan says:

This team is fatally flawed. Fire Omar, hire Buck, and allow him to rebuild teh franchise into a winner.

Dealing Slumpingtran would be a nice jump-start to the process

    • metsflip says:

I almost agree for the Beltran thing, but no trade clause

      • AngryFan says:

He’ll happily waive it to get out of here. GUARANTEED

        • nrmax88 says:

you guys are nuts. You don’t realize how good Beltran is. You will miss him terribly when he is gone.

        • nrmax88 says:

I know he is frustrating to watch offensively, but just step back, be rational, and think about it for a second. Beltran is in a down offensive year. But still, look around the league and tell me what NL CF’s have out produced Carlos Beltran this year? 2 come to mind for me, Rick Ankiel and Nate Mclouth. And that is in a down offensive year for Carlos. He has been well above average offensively with a 117 OPS+. And I promise he will heatup, he always does. And we know he gives you top tier defense and he is probably a top 5 baserunner in the MLB. He is so important.

        • metsflip says:

          Well said

        • nrmax88 says:

Thank you, and just remember Yankee fans learned this lesson. They had Bernie for ever, took him for granted, and now have to watch Melky play everyday. Even at the worst of times, Beltran is an above average offensive player for his position and gives you top tier everything else. His numbers last year on this day look eerily similar to his numbers right now also. Last year he got hot in mid august and surged through the rest of the season. He will be okay. I long to see David Wright roping linedrives all over the field like he used to, instead of swinign for homeruns everytime. I am a little worried about David.

      • 2008mets19 says:

i wud love 2 trade beltran cept even if he did waive his no trade clause not 2 many teams wud be willing 2 pik up his contract

    • hi5wright says:

You want to get rid of BELTRAN? Why, so we could have just ONE outfielder?

  28. The Slider says:

I can’t believe I have to go into the office tomorrow (I live in Philadelphia) and take a bunch of grief from Phillies fans. Why oh why do I put myself through this.

Thank you to our 2008 NY Mets.

  29. The Slider says:

On the plus side, I left y’all after the 5th inning, so my Sunday was not a complete waste – like my Friday and Saturday nights were.

  30. ABklyndude says:

Remember Rick Peterson, after he got fired? This is what he said in one of his interviews:

“More than anything,” Peterson said, “I feel good about the fact that we never had any pitchers go down with arm injuries.”

I can’t help but think that somehow The Jacket, as much we raked him over the coals, had a better sense of a pitcher’s overall health… Under Warthen: two pitchers down?

    • Gina says:

Did he miss Pedro in 06?

      • ABklyndude says:

Good point, but that’s also “Pedro being Pedro.” He’s always been delicate. I have to say, I feel like Maine (and he may be the only one, I’ll allow) has suffered a bit from not having Peterson around.

        • Koko says:

Why. He was mediocre with Peterson and mediocre without him this year.

He’s always thrown a lot of pitches in few innings. Warthen and Manuel haven’t increased his workload at all. And unless allowing Maine to throw a curveball once in every 20 or so pitches is the reason he is hurt (which would be ludicrious), Maine is just hurt.

        • KL15 says:

This is absolutely hysterical. Rick Peterson is also the same guy who said “I can fix Victor Zambrano in ten minutes.” And because of that little pearl of wisdom from “the jacket” Scott Kazmir is now a star for the Rays.

        • Gina says:

Peterson said that after the trade.

        • KL15 says:

Very well then. How’s Vitctor Zambrano’s number for the Mets?

        • nrmax88 says:

Kazmir is indredibly talented, but also slightly overated. He is a better version of John Maine for his career so far. He strikes out a ton of guys, doesnt allow a lot of hits or runs, but walks alot, gets into deep counts and throws a ton of pitches, which has made him into a 5/6 inning pitcher at this point in his career. Kazmir will not be a star until he figures out how to stay healthy and pitch deep into games. Just saying.

    • metsflip says:

      Whoa thats weird

    • ToastyJoe says:

Wait, didn’t Zambrano go down with an arm injury?

  31. dominicanboy08 says:

I will feel much better if the philies lose tonight

  32. kjmcc0729 says:

Have we seen enough of Evans yet? The guy is completely overmatched at the plate. He needs to be sent back down and play every day. The MLB roster is no place for him right now.

If they need a right handed bat to platoon with Murphy, why not let A. Reyes play 2nd some more and use Easley in left? Evans killed us looking at 3 strikes with his bat on his shoulder and the bases loaded!

    • KL15 says:

He may do well with some time in AAA. But this is the only course the team has at this point.

      • Gina says:

Basically, him, murphy and kunz wouldn’t be up here if we had other options.

        • kjmcc0729 says:

Understood, but anything has got to be a better option at this point. what about my suggestion? you can try A reyes at 2nd and slide easley to LF? Evans is an automatic out right now, and they aren’t even productive outs.

    • ahingo says:

yeah Evans isn’t even a top prospect. Bring up Fernando

  33. ou812jay8 says:

A lot of people want Omar’s head right now, but I really like what he did at the deadline. He didn’t make a Scott Kazmirish panic trade, he didn’t mortgage any of the future for an imediate fix right now at prices that were according to everyone’s opinion, very high. You don’t want to be the team that trades Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson. This team really is not old. Look at every position.

    C-Castro/Schneider aren’t too bad
1B-Delgado is old, but he is playing pretty young right now.
2B-Castillo is 32, but I really don’t anticipate he will be around next year. Omar will do something.
    3B-Wright
    SS-Reyes
    RF-Church
    CF-Beltran
    LF-Murphy/Evans

    SP-Santana
    SP-Maine
    SP-Pelfrey
    SP-Niese
    SP-Perez(if they resign him)

CL-Wagner is old, but still is fairly effective
    SU-Kunz
    RH-Heilman
    RH-Smith
    LH-Feliciano
    RH-Sanchez

I can even see Castillo being traded for a reliever and Murphy being inserted at 2B. There is a youth movement going on right now and the Mets are still contending. They might not make the playoffs this year, but if they stay the course, I feel really good about the long term future of this club. Stop relying on the Alou’s and El Duque’s of the world and stick with the young, healthy, cheap kids. Think about it, both of those guys and Pedro(maybe even Delgado) are all coming off the books after this season. That’s a lot of money to spend on a Sabathia or Teixeira. Maybe Sabathia gets signed and Niese gets brought in slowly as a longman next year. I’m excited about this team and anything they do this year is gravy.

    • nrmax88 says:

Great post. One of the best I have seen on Metsblog. I agree, but unfortunately I dont think you and I are in the majority. A lot of these guys only became fans a couple of years ago, and even of the ones that are true fans, for the most part they all want to win now and would gladly sacrifice the future for now. Of course, those will be the same people bashing the trades they were advertsising for all along.

    • Gina says:

Why would anyone trade for Castillo? Or at least trade anything of value.

Also I think it’s a little early to say Murphy can be slotted in 2B.

    • dominicanboy08 says:

yes, mets should trade castillo in the off-season

    • AngryFan says:

They’re not getting either, and they’re 100% not going after CC.

      STOP IT NOW PLEASE

    • KL15 says:

      Here Here!

    • metsgo says:

omar will be fired at the end of the year so we wont have to woory about him anymore his judgment ion building this team were way off he could of fixed this before the year started and even early on
no left feilder all year no long man in releif and on and on
while he did not trade the farm for some one during the deadline which was smart he is still holding the blame for this 138 million dollar pay roll of old players
castillo gets a lot of flke and maybe he deserves it but an old closer in wagner with no one to shore him up ,an old first basemen in delgado with no real back up
an old starting pither in el duke
a realy old left feilder in alou and a questionable backup who got hurt in pagan and now to fix things we bring our presious double a infeilders to play left feild this is embarising these guys ned to stay in the minors to build up there skills not ruin them by bringing them up to fill needs that they were not groomed for

    • ahingo says:

This left feild platoon is retarted Omar needs to go out next year and find a real outfeilder. Maybe Fernando Martinez will be ready, but Nick Evans is not MLB material.

  34. mrosey says:

On a more rational note, it bothers me that Reyes (followed by Beltran, Wright, and Delgado) got on twice and scored 0 times. Then again, there wasnt much that didnt bother me this weekend.

    • nrmax88 says:

Exactly. What ever happened to as Reyes go the Mets go? He was on fire the whole trip and they drop 5 of 6. If Wright isn’t hitting, it doesnt matter what Jose does. Beltran has actually been swigning the bat better during this series, and he always heats up late. Check his numbers from last year right now, very similar to the numbers this year. He surged through september for us last year. And we know he is a streak hitter, he will get hot at some point ans stay hot for a good 2 weeks. He doesnt scare me as much as Wright because Wright has always been so consistent and looks now like an all or nothing type of hitter. I miss the days of Davis Wright linedrives all over the ball park.

      • AngryFan says:

What’s so great about this guy’s post? All I see is him glorifying a roster that’s chronically underachieved for 3 straight years now.

        WOW.

Fire Omar, bring Buck in to dismantle this fatally flawed team. Start with dealing Beltran to jumpstart the program

        • KL15 says:

Because his post is RATIONAL. Unlike your suggestions which would create the largest turnover in MLB. What would you do when it wasn’t working out next year, fire everyone again?

        • AngryFan says:

I’ve seen enough with this team, with this core.

THEY CAN’T GET IT DONE, THEY HAVEN’T GOTTEN IT DONE, THEY WON’T GET IT DONE.

Time to cut bait. Time for Omar to go, and to let a real GM who’s actually proven he can build a winner take over.

        • KL15 says:

I’ll agree with you statement about Omar. But I think the core is better than you’re giving them credit for. The coaching leaves alot to be desired.

        • nrmax88 says:

Exactly. It I just agree with his thoughts on Omar at the deadline. People want to see us trade our future for relief pitchers and fringe outfielders. Its crazy. I dont want Sabathia at the money he will command, and I certainly dont want anything to with Tex. But Omar has done great, and is always killed. Its not a coincidence he has put a team together for 2 years that has been a favorite to win the NL. All he can do is put the team together. The one trade he is always killed for isnt even looking so bad now that Brian Bannister remembered that he isnt a good pitcher. Typing in capital letters sort of just tells people to not take your post seriously, just so you know.

        • Gina says:

Eh, as irrational as angryfan is most of the time I can’t say he’s being ridiculous now. This team has been pretty much the same inconsistent .500ish team since Juny 07.Maybe a big shake up is needed.

But that being said I don’t think we’re in bad enough shape to justify a complete rebuild, just that maybe keeping this core together and trying to add other pieces isn’t the best plan. And of this core the only players it would make sense to move, and who might be able to get serious value back, are Beltran and Wagner. But considering the lack of big names moved at the deadline I’m not sure we could expect to move them now.

        • nrmax88 says:

I move Wright before I move Beltran. You dont replace Beltran in CF. Look around the league, there are no decent replacements. If you want to change up the core, here would have been my move(before the deadline).

          David Wright
          Scott Schoeneweis to LAA

          Juan Rivera
          Chone Figgins
          Nick Adenhart
          Kendry Morales
          Erick Aybar to NYM.

I dont know if LAA pulls the trigger, but I would have to seriously think about it.

          SS Jose Reyes
          3B Chone Figgins
          CF Carlos Beltran
          1B Carlos Delgado
RFJuan Rivera (until Church is back)
          LF Kendry Morales
          2B Easley/ Reyes/ Aybar
          C Schneider

There, I said it. Let the name calling and bashing rain down.

        • Gina says:

I have no rational reason for this but I wouldn’t even consider trading Wright or Reyes.

        • metsflip says:

          WHAT ARE YOU CRAZY??
DAVID IS A MET AND WILL ALWAYS BE!!! THAT IS A STUPID STUPID TRADE!

        • ahingo says:

Yeah wtf is up with you and bringing Chone figgins for wright. That’s retarted and nobody’s picking up Delgado’s option, even though he’s resurging his slow start will not be good enough.

      • garfios says:

Agree, I don’t like this Wright, he wants to pull everything, he use to go with the pitch, not now, he is thinking over the left field wall all the time.

        • KL15 says:

I once again refer back to coaching.

        • nrmax88 says:

Bleh. Big league hitters know how to hit. I dont buy that David Wright stopped hitting because of the coaching. He stopped hitting because he is now a pull hitter trying to hit bombs. Either he will learn from it, and adjust, or he wont. Hopefully he does.

        • KL15 says:

I understand big leauge hitter know how to hit. I also understand that big leauge coaches would pull a guy like David Wright aside and ask him why he’s trying to pull the ball over the left field wall everytime. I agree with what your saying. And big leauge coaches don’t have to tell big leaugers how to hit. They work on mechanics and make suggestions about their approach.

        • nrmax88 says:

          Fair enough.

        • mylegshurt says:

His fixation on pulling the ball reminds me of Howard Johnson.

          whoops . . . .

      • kd bart says:

It was a very poor offensive trip for the Mets. Yes, they hit in the .260s as a team for the week (55-208) but they only scored 19 runs over the six games. Wasted far too many opportunities on this trip. Three runs a game on the road just won’t do in most circumstances.

        • nrmax88 says:

The only team that can beat the Mets is….. the Mets. Ever since 06. We just beat ourselves. No situational hitting. Been the case ever since 2006.

  35. metsgo says:

this team in its current roster is dead and nothing that could be done now can change it ,low impact trades wont work

  36. kd bart says:

I love how a couple of Met losses brings out the rational, level headed and clear thinking Met fan and not the type who just spurt nonsense off the top of their head.

    • KL15 says:

Well eventually we were all going to come to these conclusions. I suppose better now than later.

    • metsgo says:

do you really think that the 10 game streak was the real mets when all year they were a 500 team and thats where they are heading back to

      • KL15 says:

Not sure what you’re saying, probably my fault. I think the Mets are a .500 or slightly better team. Either .500 consistently or hot one week and ice cold the next. They’re a bit too old and a bit under managed IMO.

  37. The Slider says:

I missed Kunz pitching today. How did he look? Was he showing off that 96 mph heater?

    • dominicanboy08 says:

      a 94 mph sinker

      • KL15 says:

I think he’s got a future. What do you think?

        • nrmax88 says:

Cant say after 1 start. That was the strangest inning I have ever seen. Let me recap.

Erstad. Bunt single to lead off.

Quintero. Sac bunt, Kunz makes the worst throw I have ever seen and ball goes over Delgado’s head. Erstad collides with Jose Reyes rounding 2nd. Easley picks the ball up and throws out Erstad going to 3rd.

Newhan. Takes 3 balls, all over the place, none of which were close to the strike zone. Swings 3-0, 6-4-3 DP, tailor made. Strange inning. Kunz throws hard, but he didnt show much else in his 1 inning. Have to see more of him.

        • KL15 says:

Well some one earlier poo poo’d coaching, but I hope Dan Warthen can work with him and get somewhere.

        • metsgo says:

of course he got a great future look who he will backing up or for now filling in for
lets hope they dont trade him these guys neise and kunz will benifit from this stint in the bigs
I think murphy and evans are being ruined

        • KL15 says:

Really, Murphy and Evans are being ruined…..why?

        • metsgo says:

when a player is not playing his natural position he is out of his comfort zone
evans just started playing left in double a just before he was called up I know these guys got to learn sometime but at the big league level?
Murphy was a third basemen recently converted to second in the last two weeks left feild is supposed to be a easy position but to learn it the hard way just intimidates a person
For a young player early success is important this way when they come bak up its not so intimidating

        • Gina says:

Well it’s to early to say anything about Murphy but with Evans he’s clearly over matched at the plate and he’s not getting enough at bats to really progress. He either needs to be playing everyday somewhere in the minors or getting more regular at bats up here.

        • mylegshurt says:

          Milledge homered last night. Hey, there’s a solar eclipse . . . .

  38. kd bart says:

Why do I even bother coming here? Just a bunch of defeatists who love to whine.

  39. kd bart says:

2 games back with 51 to play on August 3rd and a bunch of you have already thrown in the towel.

    Pathetic.

    • KL15 says:

Look guy, it isn’t looking too good. Alot of guys are getting hurt and the same probelms are starting to rear their head again. I’m sure most of us are going to continue to follow the games. And if we’re wrong then great.

    • metsgo says:

its not that but what level of confidence do have with this team I mean getting to the playoffs we have a chance but getting the real prize I just dont know , all the hype and I feel that this team should be a lot better

    • WrightIsAwesome says:

      fire Omar

    • Two-By-Four says:

      Make it 3 back.

  40. ou812jay8 says:

I’m not complaining! The bullpen is horrid right now, but I love this youth movement that is going on. Kunz could be a major help, Murphy seems like he is a total gamer. Love it. Evans has seemed overmatched, but he really hasn’t had a chance to play on an everyday basis. Can’t wait to see what Niese has to offer. F-Mart is going to be here probably before the end of the year, and then you have guys like Parnell and Carp that could be up in September as well. Think about it, when was the last time the Mets actually had some form of youth movement across the board? 1983-84-85. I think we all can remember what those years started. Be patient people! It’s not too often that teams go young and still compete for a division championship. Granted, that wasn’t Omar’s thinking going into this year, but these are kids that he drafted and he deserves some credit for that. If the Mets finish within 3 or 4 games of the Phillies/Marlins this year(whoever wins), I GUARANTEE that Omar will be back. This team has a definite future and Omar is responsible for that.

    • metsgo says:

unless hes showcasing these guys for a trade then you wont have the same feeling for omar
just remeber last year with humber and gomez

  41. mylegshurt says:

Fan sentiment is moving away from “win now,” especially now that the Yankees aren’t winning championships anymore. This team desperately needs fresh faces — if Omar stays the course, I think he may have something.

The 2008 Mets are not World Series caliber even in their best moment, so what’s the harm?

  42. erkifish26 says:

I had a feeling this was a team to sell at the deadline… I’d love to see these young guys spark something, but we can’t expect anything. Hopefully somebody steps up and takes charge of the team, before this skid turns into a major slump.

  43. The Slider says:

Anybody else see the Bill James episode on 60 Minutes just a minute ago?

Do you think that Omar has read James’ Baseball Almanac?

  44. krispy644 says:

    um…

are you guys at all surprised that Mets were swept today? because I wasn’t.

hey Cancel….GREAT BASERUNNING BY THE WAY!

    METS MENTAL GAME: NEGATIVE ZERO!

    METS=DISAPPOINTMENT AND DIASTER!

    • JohnAnthony says:

Although Tatis has been a pleasant surprise as has Easley with his veteran presence, but when you have Tatis Easley Cancel Evans as your 5-6-7-8 hitters, I dont think the Zephyrs can win with that lineup. Mets need some fresh arms in that bullpen. I hope Wagner gets dl`ed so we can see what Kunz has to offer as our closer. I hope the heilman-show blowups finally allow Manuel to realize to call up some young fresh arms instead of throwing the same bums out every time. Its still funny to me how Heilman wants to be a starter, meanwhile, the guy has trouble getting one out, let alone 7 innings.

      • The Slider says:

Who else is there to bring up? And who would you send down?

I think Kunz is it for now. And judging by his performance today, he’s going to need a little time just to calm his nerves.
And Manuel wants to use him as the closer while Wagner is on the shelf?

        Homey don’t think so.

        • therealsince86 says:

Sanchez to the DL. Bring up Vargas.

        • The Slider says:

I can see that, though I don’t consider Vargas as one of our “young arms.”

Do you know that Sanchez is going on the DL, or do you just surmise it, as I do, that he needs a breather?

        • therealsince86 says:

I just think he needs time off. He is coming back from surgery and hitting 89 on the guns.
As for Vargas, I am thinking fresh arms as much as I am young.

  45. The Slider says:

Anybody watching Phillies v. Cards on ESPN?

    • therealsince86 says:

      I am now, thanks.

    • dominicanboy08 says:

      yes, hoping they lose..lol

      • The Slider says:

Yes, let’s try and salvage a little bit of hope and happiness out of this disastrous weekend.

        Let’s Go Cards!

    • MetfaninFL says:

Ahhh, the Phillies and Joe Morgan. Could ESPN do anything more to make me reconsider my love of baseball.

      • The Slider says:

Still better than Buck and McCarver, IMHO.

        • MetfaninFL says:

At least on Saturday there is hope you might get one of the secondary games without Buck and McCarver. On Sunday night you know your gonna have to deal with Joe Moron.

      • The Slider says:

Great, Joe understand both sides of the Farve situation. Way to not commit yourself Joe. Ugh.

        • MetfaninFL says:

I hate when he tries to understand other sports. He doesn’t know anything about the one he’s paid to talk about.

        • The Slider says:

He certainly covered all bases (no pun intented) on Farve. So, no matter what happens with him, Joe was correct.

  46. dominicanboy08 says:

just checked beerleaguer and phillies fans hate joe morgan and …lol…its not only us, they suck.

if the Phillies don’t outscore the other team, they’ll have problems.
    joe morgan…duh!!

  47. ralphcarlsonjr says:

Maine down, Wagner down, swept by the Astros, and now the team is getting filled wth minor leaguers. This doesn’t look good. Can anyone say 2009?

    • The Slider says:

Ah, we complain a lot here, but I’m not ready to call it in. Shyt, we were up 7 and 1/2 with only 17 to got and . . . well, you get the point.

(My apologies for having to bring “it” up.)

    • MetfaninFL says:

Maybe the kids will spark us to victory. I’ve never seen so much negativity surrounding a team that is over .500. Considering the Phils are only on pace to win 88 or 89 games we aren’t in a hole we can’t get out of.

      • ralphcarlsonjr says:

The Philies dont have our salary either. All be it a lot of it spend on players like 38 year old Castillo in a 4 year deal. I find it hard to think they had to give him such a deal and that other teams would have match’d anywhere near that.

        • Gina says:

We didn’t have to give him the 4th year but Houston was offering the same 3 year deal. And what other option did we have? That’s one of the problems with having to rely on free agent signings, you have less leverage.

        • therealsince86 says:

Atually from what we heard Houston was offering something like 3/21. We did more years to seal the deal.

  48. The Slider says:

Would you guys want the Mets to seriously go after Pat Burrell to play LF for us? He’s putting up very solid numbers again. And we will need a right handed hitting LF next season.

    • MetfaninFL says:

I really wouldn’t want him. He is a good hitter but is not very good in the field or on the bases. I’m not sure if its because C. Manuel is an idiot or Burrell is slow but I’ve seen both pitchers and Geoff Jenkins Pinch Run for him. All that does is weaken your bench. I think if we are going to overpay for a right handed LF we should go after Manny. That also would make our draft pick go to the Dodgers and not the Phillies. I don’t want to hear this blog if the draft pick we give up for Burrell turns into a HOF player for the Phils.

      • The Slider says:

All good points. Burrell is slow … but Ol’ Cholly is a little bit of a knucklehead too.

  49. The Slider says:

    Ludwick HR.

    Cards 2, Phillies 0

    • MetfaninFL says:

I would like to formally apologize to Ryan Ludwick for questioning his place on the All Star team. He’s paid up in my mind for hitting 4 HR this weekend against the Phils

  50. dominicanboy08 says:

we should sign manny to a 2-3 year deal and tex for 5 years. trade castillo for whatever. make murphy the 2B. trade or release schneider

    reyes
    murphy
    wright
    manny
    tex
    beltran
    church
    sign a new catcher

    sign garland and perez

    santana
    maine
    pelfrey
    garland
    perez

I know this would be difficult to do, but if the mets want to open citifield with a championship they could can do it.

but for now I want this mets team to get to the playoffs, this team is not that great, but you never know what can happen in the postseason

    • therealsince86 says:

LOL, so you want to spend 300 million dollars on Tex and Manny.
Then spend 125 on Garland and Perez. Cut bait with 18 million for Castillo, cut Schnieder at 5 million and sign a new catcher at at least 5 million.
So that brings the total to around 450 MILLION DOLLARS. Wow, you must be a product of the video game generation, huh?

      • MetfaninFL says:

You know Wilpon has it. He’s just so cheap. Its not like he locked down his two best position players to big extensions and has 2 $100 million players on the roster .

    • ahingo says:

      castro should be starting catcher!

  51. MetfaninFL says:

Miller and Morgan are like an 80 year old Husband and wife. They just spend an entire at bat talking about the last time they saw Sandy Kofax. “We saw him at Shea” “I wasn’t there that night” ” He was with Wilpon”.

I just want to tell them that no one cares about where they saw Kofax….. just tell us what Sandy said.

  52. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

listen, i have been saying since the day that manuel took over that the mets werent going to win this divison no matter how much i loved the mets, and the simple reason was that the bullpen was horrible and they could not beat the good teams. the 10 game win streak, and i still commented that i was not impressed simply cuz 7 of the 10 games came against the reds, giants, and the rockies, not your world series teams, huh? now they lose 2 of 3 to the marlins, and 4 straight and 6 of 8. now that wags is down, church is delayed, and the team is being run by role players, unless this team has another 10 game streak is in the future, this team will not go to the playoffs, and i am not being slanderous, cuz deep down ask yourself it is the truth, do you really think this is the team from 06, or a good enough team to beat the cubs, brewers, angels?

    • MetfaninFL says:

I think this team can compete with anyone in the NL. Although we are miles behind anyone in the AL. I really could envision scenarios between finishing in 3rd place and winning the NL pennant. Thats how streaky this team is. I know that we won the 10 games against bad teams but is that our fault? Its like the saying goes “You play who is on your schedule”. We still have a bunch of stretches against teams WORSE than Rox/Giants. Even our toughest series left is at home against the Cubs and they should have wrapped up the division by then so they won’t even be trying. I know I’m pretty blinded by my love of the Mets but I’m not writing this season off. Anything can happen in the NL and we are 2.5 back at the moment and 3.5 back in the WC.

      • MetfaninFL says:

Although I keep hearing Wags is down. Has it been announced that Wagner is going on the DL? If so, then we are in a much deeper hole but not a killer, yet.

  53. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

i mean you do have a point. i was sorta trying to point that out, but to the mets fans, the season is not over, they are 2.5 games back pending phillies game, just that if you are hoping for a WS title, then you are sadly mistaken

    • MetfaninFL says:

I think our problem is outside of the 10 game streak we have stuggled with the Easy teams. I mean we are 5-4 Against WSH but we won 2 of 3 vs LAA. We lost 2 of 3 to SEA but won 4 of 6 vs. NYY. The Braves have pretty much owned us but we destroy the Phillies. Thats why I still hold out hope for this team. Sometimes they show flashes of how good they can be against good teams. I think the Sport pages in the clubhouse should be outlawed so they don’t know if the other team is any good.

      • jimyager says:

Good Call. The Phillies took care of the Nats and when we get our chance we will split and thats not good. We need to pad the standings when we play these sub 500 teams. When you add to that Wags and Maine are out we are in for some troubled times here, With what 50 games to go, we need to get on another HOT streak and put some games between us and the second place team. That way when we slip against these sub 300 teams we have a cushion. I just dont have the confidence in this team that I feel I should. When the going gets tough we will NOT get going and we miss the playoffs by 1 game, again.

        • RodKanehl says:

Before we pad our lead over the second place team wouldn’t it be nice if we weren’t the third place team?

  54. metz1 says:

the season is far from over but with maine hurt it doesnt bode well. But maybe its time to aquire someone like hunter pence or adam lind and couple of young pitchers for delgado.

  55. metz1 says:

love to see beltran in the middle of adam lind and hunter pence.we need to youthen this team. And improve the pitching by trading delgado, castillo and of course let carp, evans or someone to play 1st.

  56. metz1 says:

another option to win now is trying to aquire a good right handed closer if kunz doesnt work out.

  57. MetfaninFL says:

Why is Ron Villone still on a ML roster? I think when the Yankees let go of you and you are LH thats a good sign your career is over.

  58. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

nah, i say resign carlos to a two-three year deal as a stopgap to ike davis, at 1st.

if the mets were patient, they would have long term answers

    1st- ike davis

    2nd- daniel murphy

    shortstop- jose reyes

    third- david wright

    left- fernando martinez

    center- carlos beltran

    right- ryan church

    1st- johan santana

    2nd- john maine

    3nd- my guy big pelf

4th- ollie perez (if not brad holt)

    5th- jonathon niese

    bullpen

9th- brant rustich ( i kno, but this guy has dead great stuff, might be the next papelbon, who was a 6th round selection, ya neva know.

    8th- eddie kunz

7th- aaron heilman (i still trust him) or bobby parnell

    • ralphcarlsonjr says:

wow, you have all those Met prospects working out, that would be like a first in history for any team.

  59. metz1 says:

yep .usually evry team is looking for Lh pitching,

  60. metz1 says:

i agree but ny is win now town. even though i remember th mid eighties mets having a very good farm system.

  61. metz1 says:

i was saying two years ago just wait tampa bay is going to improve.with all the young talent they have they had to.I think its time we found another gooden, darling ,fernandez.

  62. ou812jay8 says:

What the hell is all this “Sky is falling” BS that everyone seems to have? So the Mets got swept in Houston and had a bad road trip. So what. They have played much worse than this this year and has anyone looked at the standings? They are 2 games out! No one is running away with this division! The Phillies had their chance earlier this year and they blew it. Which, if anyone was keeping score at home, the Phils blew the same 71/2 game lead in about the same amount of games that the Mets did last year, but no one says anything because it happened in June/July instead of September. This Phils team isn’t all that great either, folks. I have no idea how the hell the Marlins are still in this thing. The way they play, they must have sold their souls to the devil. The Baseball Gods will catch up with them sooner or later. Might not even be this year, but it will happen. With all the injuries the Mets have had(many more than the Phils or Marlins) they have done quite well. It could be worse, they could be the Braves.

  63. metz1 says:

but i wonder what would have happened if we would have signed francisco cordero to help wags close?

  64. metz1 says:

it would be nice to have a LH with 20 saves and a RH with 20 saves also plus it would take some stress off wags.

  65. ou812jay8 says:

I would bet anything that the Mets go after K-Rod this offseason. Use Wagner to setup. Or do a dual closer thing like Orosco/McDowell or the Nasty Boys in Cincy back in the early 90s

    • RodKanehl says:

Wagner is poison now. If you try to make him a part time closer or set up man, he will totally destroy your clubhouse. He needs to go far away and never come back.

  66. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

i always wanted to know this. does team payroll mean anything at all anymore. i mean the yankees always have a 200 million payroll and are in the playoffs, but the mariners, tigers, and the blue jays have high payrolls and are horrible, cept the tigers on a lower degree.

  67. metz1 says:

i wonder if houston is still interested in castillo? Id take a young pitcher from them.

    • The Slider says:

“Still interested”???? What the f are we waiting for? I mean, the Stros don’t have to give us anything back. Just take him and his contract.

  68. metz1 says:

i just wish we had a stronger farm system.

  69. danlx13 says:

    When does church come back????

  70. metz1 says:

and maybe if we trade castillo and delgado we can aquire a couple of young pitchers

  71. The Slider says:

Braves announcer Skip Carrey past away.

He was a very good baseball (and basketball) announcer. R.I.P.

  72. metz1 says:

    hopefully soon.

  73. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

metsz, it will be better when like say next year, when they are in baseball’s top 100 prospects, niese will be there, havens yes, and davis, iffy, i really like brad holt though. so yeah, it is strong, just not enough value just yet, they are building their way up, if only they could develop talent. and danix, your guess is as good as mine, i would say if everything goes as planned, august 10-15 at the earliest.

  74. ou812jay8 says:

Probably the best bet in dealing Castillo would be Colorado, Arizona(if Hudson leaves), Cubs, White Sox(if they trade Cabrera and move Ramirez to short), Indians, Dodgers(if Kent retires), or San Diego(if they view themselves as contenders next year). There are some options, but the Mets will have to eat some salary and not expect a lot in return. A mid-level prospect or some uninspiring reliever. Not one of Omar’s finer moves, I must say.

  75. ou812jay8 says:

Delgado is not going to be traded!!! He is the best hitter right now on a team that is only 2 games out of first place. He can become a free agent after this season if the Mets do not pick up his option. As of right now, I think they will, but they won’t pick it up to trade him.

  76. The Slider says:

Crap. Phillies tie Cards. Burrell knocks in Utley with a two–out single. Utley scores from 2B.

  77. The Slider says:

Shane Victorino just hit a 3 run HR. Phillies 5, Cards 2.

    : (

  78. BigPelf4prez says:

    phillies win

  79. The Slider says:

Friggen LaRussa, GET SPRINGER OUT OF THERE!!

    Fire LaRussa.

  80. J0eSmiTh says:

were 3 back. playing like crap. not looking good.

  81. MetfaninFL says:

Anyone who complains about the Mets bullpen hasn’t watched the Cardinals much. So many retreads from bad teams. Plus they don’t even have a real closer at the back end.

    • mets8669 says:

yess but they have a high powereed offense that makes up for it usually on a consistent basis and if we stuck the cards in the nl east theyd be in first place

    • mets8669 says:

And i’m not saying that we dont have a high powered offense but our offense doesn’t perform on a consistent basis like the cardinals usually do.

  82. hi5wright says:

Well are bullpen isnt’ the only bullpen that sucks.

  83. RodKanehl says:

So when we get to 7.5 back will Omar get rid of the interim clown and will Wilpon get rid of the GM clown?

  84. amazin92 says:

    gecko is 0-3 now

  85. hi5wright says:

Brightest part of my day is to see Rollins go 0-5 and his average dip down to .263.

  86. adam900 says:

To be honest I think we can turn it around at Shea against the Pads and Marlins. We tend to do very well at home lately, if we keep this losing streak up and lose the series to the Pads and Marlins, I lost hope for this year.

  87. KL15 says:

The St Louis Cardinals, possibly the only team with less heart than the Mets.

  88. mets8669 says:

this is wat annoys me about the mets. they come into this series with a good chance to bulk up on a struggling team and gain ground in the division while philadelphia has to battle it out in st louis. but no they get swept by arguably one of the worst and disfunctional teams in the league. sooo no thx to the struggling offense and the unrealibale bullpen we have goten swept by the houston astros and depending on whether philly wins it tonight, we r 2 or 3 games back

  89. The Slider says:

Jon Miller just said that “Lidge has not blown a save yet this season.” I hope he just jinxed him.

  90. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

    hit batsmen

  91. The Slider says:

    Lucky us. Nick Stananoha? Ugh.

  92. The Slider says:

Joe Mather? Who the hell is he? Jesus.

  93. mets8669 says:

    Yeah.

  94. The Slider says:

    3 games back.

  95. MetfaninFL says:

Apparently Plate Discipline is not preached at AAA Memphis

  96. LIMetfan74 says:

3 games back! Way to show up Mets!

  97. KL15 says:

Like I said, no heart. I understood in Little Leauge and in Babe Ruth ball that when the bases are loaded with one out, he has to get you out, you don’t have to get a hit, I guess the Mets made a stop on the flight back from Houston to screw up the rest of the day as well. The sad fact is Philadelphia wins these type of games, the Mets do not.

  98. KL15 says:

The Met bullpen does not blow leads. The same one that was in Houston Saturday?

  99. 2008mets19 says:

who else wnts 2 get tha phillies fans pissd go 2 beerleaguer.com u dnt have 2 register or anything u jus type wat u wnt i alredy commented ova there

  101. AngryFan says:

    Lidge >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WAGNER

    • nymfan1218 says:

No reason to be worried. The Mets are 18-4 in games I’ve attended this year and I’m going to all 3 Pads games

    • MetfaninFL says:

You remember that one time in April when everyone said Lidge would suck because he played at CPB? Yeah, I think our feet have met our mouth on that one. Race isn’t over yet though people. Phils still gotta make another trip out west which as we’ve seen with the Mets can kill a team’s momentum. Huge series with the Friars this week. If we can find a way to win the series we are gonna pick up ground on someone with FLA vs. PHI.

    • KinersKornerman says:

      Ham Sandwich >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WAGNER

      • MetfaninFL says:

You know everyone who rags on Wagner needs to ask themself: Who is a better closer? Right now I can only think of a few: (not in any order)

        1.Rivera
        2. Papelbon
        3. K-Rod
        4. Lidge
        5. Nathan
Those 5 are definites (most of them are in the AL) and during any given stretch of games you might be able to make a case for maybe Cordero of CIN or Valverde of HOU but I think Wagner is still one of the top closers in the NL

I know Wagner isn’t hot right now but that doesn’t make him terrible. Would you rather have Kevin Gregg? C.J. Wilson maybe? While Wagner cost us a few games this year we would not even be sniffing this race without him.

        • 2008mets19 says:

ur rite without wagner wed be close 2 10 games out nd the game against tha phillies proved how hard it is 2 pitch in tha 9th inning it takes a lot 2 get those final 3 outs sanchez proved he cudnt do it

        • MetfaninFL says:

I think it was Darling who said “swimming in the swimming hole by your house and swimming in shark infested waters. Both are swimming but one is a whole heck of a lot harder”.

        • KinersKornerman says:

yes, you make a good point. The ham sandwich thing was joke borne out of frustration.

You can add Soria, Sherril, Lidge and maybe Brian Wilson to you list if it’s for 2008 closers.

And yes, it is a tough job, but the man signed up for it, so he’s gotta take the heat.

        • MetfaninFL says:

True, I guess if he’s gonna get paid all that money you have the right to hold him accountable.

        • KL15 says:

You know, I’m sure if you asked Billy Wagner he’d tell you that everyone has the right to hold him accountable too. To me that counts for something.

        • MetfaninFL says:

I agree, At least he’s a stand up guy.

        • therealsince86 says:

Wagner is a “stand up guy”? Come on.

        • MetfaninFL says:

I don’t live in NY so I don’t get the local paper story so if that makes my statement untrue I apologize, However after Wagner blows a save I have never seen him dodge the media. He always has a quote the next day in the paper.

  102. adam900 says:

It feels like the 10 game win streak never happened to be honest.

    • KL15 says:

Well it did and it was great. Maybe it can happen again. Maybe not, but either way at the very least the Mets are trying to put something together for the future.

  103. therealsince86 says:

Convince Wagner to accept a trade to Cleveland and sign FRod.
I figure Cleveland as he would want to stay in his hometown area, close and have a shot at contending. Cleveland has no closer and will be competitive again next season after all the injuries are gone and they have money to spend.

    • fongulalou says:

Homey, I thought Wags was from Virginia.

      • therealsince86 says:

He is, I was just trying to think of any team within the area that would be competing next year and would need a closer.

        • fongulalou says:

Wags isn’t and hasn’t been the problem w/this team
the last two seasons. Inability to put opponents away and SP which nightly needs help by the 6th inning thus wearing out the pen have been our probs.

        • therealsince86 says:

True enough but Wagner has blown 7 saves this year and is clearly not healthy. Frod won’t be around after 2009.

  104. fongulalou says:

great!-comforting to know we’re building for the future!
especially comforting to long-time fans like myself who’ve
supported this team(in every way) for 35yrs & have seen one
championship!-Good thing we didnt need to go get Manny for
next to nothing or do anything else so help this yrs team!
But we’ve always got the furture. Right?!

    • fongulalou says:

metfaninfla,When does this apply to Bel-Tron???

    • therealsince86 says:

Manny for next to nothing? Matchup those two prospects to what we have. Go ahead.

      • fongulalou says:

Please sir stop with the talkin out of your arse.
neither laruche nor morris are big-time,cant-miss prospect and boston wanted him out. This team for 2 yrs has lacked a top-tier corner OF RBI guy and the Best
one of his generation becomes not just available but on
the cheap and we have no interest? I’ve been through alot of ups and downs w/this club since’73 and I’ve grown tired of excuses. Hope you have fun watching the likes of evans&murphy. These pitching probs wouldnt be as glaring if we wer able to tack on runs.

        • therealsince86 says:

Again, please match up those 2 prospects to ANY of ours. I am waiting. I will be here long enough for you to actually do ANY research.

        • therealsince86 says:

And what exactly is a Laruche?

        • fongulalou says:

Not a whole lot needed since i’ve actually seen
most of the player who have gone thru Binghampton the last 3 seasons. I would have sent
anty 2 prospect the bucs wanted to get Manny in this
line-up for a chance to win it all this year.

        • therealsince86 says:

So you would have traded Fmart and Niese for a CHANCE to win this season? If so then this arguement is over. You are not worth my time.

And whether or not you liked LAROCHE the Pirates did enough to make him their starting 3rd baseman. Who do we have that could have walked into a starting position?

        • therealsince86 says:

Answer the question. You are wasting my time.

        • fongulalou says:

I guess the coversation is over then as its apparent
you havent suffered enough w/ this team.Very
doubtful either of those 2 would have been required
to make the deal sine laroche wasn’t a top5 LA prospect nor was the pitcher anymore.Add’l the Bucs furture 3B is still in their system just converted
from Catching so laroche may not even be looked
at as their long-yerm answer BUT w/them who knows?because they obviously dont. With that however yes if need,I’d have given them the 2 you mentioned Since we really have no idea what they
are/will be and the Goal is to win a championship.

        • therealsince86 says:

Here, being that you won’t do research.

“Entering 2008, LaRoche held an APR of #20 overall and was the consensus #2 prospect in the Dodgers organization ”
Earlier today, the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired Andy LaRoche as the key piece in the three way trade in which Jason Bay and Manny Ramirez changed addresses. Along with LaRoche, the Pirates received three other prospects, but none whose status approaches that of the former Dodger farmhand.

  105. therealsince86 says:

Trade Castillo and prospects to Baltimore with 8 million for Roberts. They get a cheap 2nd baseman for 3 years at the same price of 1 year of Roberts. (Next season of course).

    • fongulalou says:

Never happened!–Castillo is here atleast through next yr.
his signing and that of Alou are the most obvious but still
true measures of omars bias and poor judgement.
No backup plan. No vet righty bat for corner OF/1B and
no backup INF to give wright/reyer a day off OR if as
      expected Castillo starts to break-down.

      • therealsince86 says:

I am telling you that some team would take a chance on him for 3 million a season. Especially if he can come back and contribute this season.
Besides, it’s not like Castillo would not have been here if the contract had been shorter. If he had signed a 2 year contract, he would still be here. We have plenty of backup IF’s to give days off. And it appears that Tatis was a pretty good backup plan for a RH bat that can play 1B/OF.

        • fongulalou says:

Exactly, as I’ve stated for months omar bidding against himself for this guy and giving him 4 yrs
would be and is becoming crippling to ths club.
I ask you,who would want this guy? Its not like a Delgado situation if he hannot gotten healthly and
started hitting where w/a potentially expiring contract
some AL contender could justify to themselves paying him big bucks hoping he’d give them ashot
in the arm if they neede a Lefty DH.

        • fongulalou says:

your comments about Tatis are complete nonsense
because if he was a backup plan why wasn’t he
here in April or MAy the 1st 2X moises was hurt
          thid year?

        • therealsince86 says:

He was bidding against Houston and should have let him go but there were no other 2B options. Houston was rumored to be offering 3/21.
Again, at 6 million a year for 3 years and injuries not many.
Pay 9 million of that (which I think Omar planned on all along) and he becomes a 3 year 9 million basically risk free.

        • therealsince86 says:

So is your nonsense. Omar not signing the 1B/OF has not hurt us at all.
Pagan was signed to backup Alou with Chavez.

        • fongulalou says:

Great no backup to Delgado and insurance Righty
for Alou BUT he got us Angel Pagan. He of no power, never proven to even be a serious MLBer
and then theres Endy the glorified jayson Tyner.
As stated, No backup plan for the inevitable.
Kinda like the knuckleheads in N.O.w/katrina
But atleast they had the evil bush and his weather
machine to blame. Again, keep on defending omar.

        • therealsince86 says:

This can go on and on. Could Anderson and Easley play 1B? Can Tatis play 1B?
The holes were there because Omar did not want to block our prospects with guys not worth the contracts they were getting. Who was out there that was better than Alou that did not want a 4+ year contract? Who was out there for 2nd base?
Pagan was not a great plan but between him and Chavez they could have been enough to get by IF Church had not gone down.
Again, instead of 2nd guessing his every move, stick your neck out and tell what you would have done so we can do the same to you.

      • ou812jay8 says:

I thought Easley was the backup IF?

        • therealsince86 says:

He is, the guy is speaking out of his “arse”.

        • fongulalou says:

Can Easley play Short anymore? What would have/
will happen if Jose misses 2/3 wks w/an injury?
And you mean to tell me given his age and last yrs terrible ankle injury Easly was a sure thing?
Ya know, now I’m wasting my time. Keep on
defending omar despite his record. He sure is doing
          a great job,don’t ya think?

        • therealsince86 says:

If Jose misses 2/3 wks with an injury then you have to call someone up from AAA. How many teams have a starter for every position on the bench?

Where were we when Omar took over? I would say he and the Wilpons are doing much better.

        • fongulalou says:

How many teams have spent half a Billion on player
payroll the last 4 seasons and b/t/w re:our fairly
poor prospect count:Isn’t 4 years long enough to developsome serious ones? This way we can go get oh,say a Manny at the deadline when he(that type of player)becomes available? And isnt this where we started and hr ago?

        • therealsince86 says:

Did you forget the Johan trade? That took 4 of our top 10 prospects. Maybe top 8.
This is the same arguement over and over. Omar gets no credit for doing well because we spent money but gets all the blame when something goes wrong.

        • therealsince86 says:

          Last thing I will say.
          If our farm system had
Fmart, Gomez, Mulvey, Humber, Niese, Guerra, Kunz, Parnell, and all the young guys it has now
would it be considered a weak system?
Do you honestly think at that point we would have not traded something like Gomez and Mulvey for Manny?

Omar has wanted Manny the ENTIRE time he has been here. It had to be that they wanted too much or nothing we had.

        • fongulalou says:

Humber wasn’t even his pick and so o.k. we gave
up Gomez(who I really like) but can easily see being
          a 2nd Roberto Kelly,Mulvey(a 2nd Bobby Jones) &
Guerra whos still a kid and who knows-kinda like
the Pitching version of “FMart” teenager, furtues game etc. Again, My Point, you dont do this
to get Manny? The Santana was a great move and I
posted Here As is forgiven omar But remember too
there were no other suitors for Santana. So its not like then Gary Carter trade yrs ago which came out of nowhere and once we foundout he was available
did whatever had to be done to get him. Santana fell
in Omars lap since the sox and yanks had no interest.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think they had interest but you are right we had more.

But, because of Santana you can’t do this for 1 year of Manny. And please don’t mention the options. There is no way I want Manny for 20 million a season.

You can’t lose your top 6 prospects in the same season and only have 1 player to show for it.

        • therealsince86 says:

That being said, watch Omar go out and sign him for 4 years 72 million.
Enough, LOL I give for tonight.
I don’t think Omar is perfect by any means. I just give him SOME of the credit for making this conversation even relevant. Before Omar and big money we would not even be having this conversation as we would be 20 games out by now. I think the biggest fault he had is that he gave into the WIN NOW crowd and relied too much on those type players. It’s kinda nice that he is not doing that right now, we will see in the offseason when he signs Manny, Pedro, Alou, Elduque and Julio Franco.

        • fongulalou says:

Biggest part of manny oking deal was team
agreeing not to p.u. the options.thats way LA got him cheap.Well we can agree to disagree.I believe
it wouldnt have cost FMart,Niece or Parnell(who b/t/w I’ve seen 4x and like more) but who knows.
even if it would have carried theat price tag,I’d have
done it because we just dont know what if anything
they(prospects)will be. For every Kazmir there are
ten Grant Roberts. For every FMart there are ten Alex
Escobars.Plus the whole point of the Draft and Minor League system is you bring in new kids every
year BUT there is only one 2007 Met team in or
very close to 1st place at the end of July with an
available Manny Ramirez, the most dangerous and clutch Righty hitter of his day available to be
acquired for a legit championship run.

        • therealsince86 says:

Truce, I would have traded Parnell and Evans by the way but I still think Omar would have too. I think it had to be Fmart and Niese or Omar would have made the trade. You know how much he loves Manny. It had to kill him not to pull the trigger. In fact, I still wonder if he did not get turned down by the Wilpons.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think the one we missed on was Nady and Marte. Think we could have gotten them for Parnell, Kunz and Evans?

        • fongulalou says:

Yeah, Thats exactly what I think.the Wilpns put
the kabash on a Manny deal because I always thought/heard omar loves him.I’m all for having a
team of solid citizens but ya know at this point i
wanna see us win a championship. Lord knows
those phoney yankee fans root for anyone if they help them win.I know also thewilpons and maybe omar wer worried about”chemistry” but c’mon
I’m sure I dont have to go into the history of teams the won and couldnt stant each other starting with
          teams I remember as a kid,the mid70s A’s and
late70s Yankees. I think in the end the combo of
both not having fresh reliable arm(s) in the pen
and having to wheel out lineups which include
too many holes 5thru8 will leave us 3/4 games
short to the Phillies and out of the playoffs since
looks like 2 teams are comin’out of the Central.

        • fongulalou says:

Ya know,I’m not sure if we could have got Nady/Marte although that would have been huge.
seems like given what the pirates took for them we
could have offered a better deal. But see THATS what drives me crazy about omar. After the fact he says as much. Dude, isn’t the what you’re paid for?
To know what’s goin’ on within the trade market coming up to the deadline? But yeah, those two would have been ideal.

  106. ou812jay8 says:

You know, people keep talking about the bullpen, but if the Mets could actually get a hit with the bases loaded, they would probably have about three more wins this year(and be tied with Philly).

    • therealsince86 says:

If we did not blow saves we would have about 15 more.
The pressing issue is still the pen. We are 3rd in the league in runs scored.

      • fongulalou says:

stats can mean anything you want them to.The other poster is correct. I watched Mcreynolds here his whole
careerand never saw a guy during that period drive in more unimportant runs.

        • therealsince86 says:

          True about McReynolds.
Point still is that our bullpen is much more responsible for our problems than another corner OF. IF Tatis had not came in and shocked everyone then I would agree. But then again we would be about 8 games out and we would not care then.

        • fongulalou says:

Hey,I’m happy with/for Tatis and you are right w/the
pen But thats my point alloffseason to upgrade and
we end up w/Wise and a prayer Sanchez would be
          back?What are we the Pirates,The Royals,hoping
and Praying ’cause we can only spend 40Mil on player salary?

        • therealsince86 says:

I agree, I wanted bullpen help but there weren’t many names out there or spots to fill.
Besides Matt Wise’s spot, (who knows what he would have given if healthy, not much but none the less) who were you going to get rid of? Show and his contract? Heilman I would have traded but it’s not like he had not been a stable force in the pen. Feliciano?

        • fongulalou says:

The problem is theres no out of the box thinking
w/our front office. For all the wilpons love of everything
dodger blue why do we not go the old Dodger route
and bring up a prospect Starter and have him in the pen for a yr getting his feet wet while getting a few outs at the time. Putting them in positive matchup situations. These Veteran RPs for the most part
cant be trusted as they’re 1 yr good,1 yr bad with of
course the exception of schoenweiss whos never had any good seasons. another reason to give him a 3 yr deal. No?

        • therealsince86 says:

Right on Show, bad signing. Omar misjudged the market on relievers and got stuck with him. At least he has trade value evidently.

But you do have to give him credit for using Smith. I guess he could bring up Niese but that would have been a big jump.

I would imagine that if Humber and Mulvey had not been traded they would both be on the roster in some form either pen or starting.

        • fongulalou says:

Def Mulvey although he hasnt been great for the
twinkies inAAA. But Ireally think Humber is gonna
be a wash out. He just has never regained his stuff after his surgery of what 3 yrs ago now. And Smith
was a good pick. Still dont understand how he got buried last year.

        • therealsince86 says:

Smith hit a wall last season. He seems to be doing the same this year.
Humber would have been in the pen here. I think he will be a decent middle reliever similar to Heilman.

        • therealsince86 says:

Well, it was fun. Come back when you want to lose a debate again, ;)

        • fongulalou says:

Yeah, theres always tomorrow and who knows
if we get hot, a week from now could all be sunshine
and Lollipops. Have a Good night!

  107. jectalo says:

What about how we get crapped on by mark loretta, jeff blum, kaz matsui, ty wigginton, and darin erstadt? This is just not a fun team to watch and make a part of your life. Same as last year. If you had told me in 2004 that we’d have johan and beltran and delgado i would have been ecstatic. i know you can’t win every game but this team finds new and disgusting ways to lose. They are really pathetic.

    • MetfaninFL says:

Finds new disgusting ways to lose? I’m pretty sure we’ve seen these all before:

Heilman serves up winning GS: 4/24 vs. WSH
Wagner Blows Save: Your choice of : 5/23 @ COL, 6/8 @ SD, 6/12 vs. AZ
Perez gets Hammered, Offense takes day off: 6/24 vs. SEA

Its like this team works on a script.
