Quote: Cancel was Brain Dead

by Matthew Cerrone on August 4th, 2008 at 7:32 am

Yesterday, with the Mets down by just one run in the third inning, Robinson Cancel was thrown out trying to steal third base, with David Wright at the plate facing a left-handed pitcher, against whom Wright is batting .387.

Jerry Maunel, on Cancel, while speaking to reporters following yesterday’s game:

“He was brain dead or something, something was wrong with him right there.  He’s probably one of our more intelligent players, and, like I said, he’s brain something got crossed up there and he decided to take off.  But, he’s a better player than that and he knows that’s not a good situation to run in.”

it happens…it shouldn’t, but it does…this was basically just one example, though glaring, of the lack of execution and focus that ran rampant among the team the entire weekend, whether at the plate, in the bullpen or on the base paths

Note: The Mets and Baseball Bats

by Matthew Cerrone on August 4th, 2008 at 7:20 am

In yesterday’s loss to the Astros, the Mets left 11 men on base, while leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth inning.

Jerry Manuel, on the team’s lack of production, while talking to reporters following yesterday’s game:

“Yeah, I mean, you know, in a ball park such as this, we definitely had some opportunities and we really didn’t take advantage of them.  I feel very confident, though, that we’re gonna be able to turn this around and start swinging the bats like we’re capable of…

“I’m hoping it’s a bump (in the road), not a hill, you know.  If it’s a bump, we should be okay.  You know, some of the guys, I don’t want to say are pressing, but in those situations where we need to get that hit it’s just not coming right now…We just gotta do better…We need to get back home, get out early, do some work and get our stuff together.”

David Wright, on Sunday’s struggles, following the game:

“It was just poor execution the entire game.  You know, we made some mental mistakes, we couldn’t get anything done with runners in scoring position and we didn’t make the pitches when we needed to make the pitches so, just a poor day of execution all around.”

The Mets have not scored a run in their last 16 innings.
