Quote: Cancel was Brain Dead

by Matthew Cerrone

Yesterday, with the Mets down by just one run in the third inning, Robinson Cancel was thrown out trying to steal third base, with David Wright at the plate facing a left-handed pitcher, against whom Wright is batting .387.

Jerry Maunel, on Cancel, while speaking to reporters following yesterday’s game:

“He was brain dead or something, something was wrong with him right there.  He’s probably one of our more intelligent players, and, like I said, he’s brain something got crossed up there and he decided to take off.  But, he’s a better player than that and he knows that’s not a good situation to run in.”

it happens…it shouldn’t, but it does…this was basically just one example, though glaring, of the lack of execution and focus that ran rampant among the team the entire weekend, whether at the plate, in the bullpen or on the base paths

“But he’s a better player than that.”

That’s news to me.

MetsLv31 August 4, 2008 at 8:18 am

Saying he’s a better player than one who runs with 2 outs and your #3 hitter at the plate isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement…Although I like that he called him “brain dead”

ToastyJoe August 4, 2008 at 10:38 am

Me, too.

npanzeca August 4, 2008 at 8:33 am

He has no business being on this team.

SadClownGoodMets August 4, 2008 at 8:34 am

First Cancel made the smart baserunning decision during the Phillies game to avoid the double play on Chavez’s lineout and he was given a little praise.

Now he messes up terribly and he’s chastised.

Ups and downs. I think he’ll live to see another day :)

SadClownGoodMets August 4, 2008 at 8:39 am

“…as i wrote yesterday, the heads up base running by cancel in that play in the ninth should not be understated…he’s a smart player…he could so easily have anticipated endy’s liner going by the pitcher, and leaning towards third, which would had led to him being picked off and ending the inning with a double play…instead, he stayed poised, paused and hopped right back to second allowing the inning to continue, so delgado could drive home the go-ahead runs…”

That’s one man’s opinion from the 3-1 game against the Phillies. Just goes to show that you’re only as good as your last game.

stearnsfan12 August 4, 2008 at 8:35 am

You are on a losing streak, and in danger of being swept and 3 games back in the division. Is anyone else wondering why this guy is even playing in front of Castro and Schneider? He’s another of these guys(muniz, evans, cancel) that I wonder how they even are on the roster at this point.

RodKanehl August 4, 2008 at 9:05 am

If you missed iyt Castro was hurt and Schneider shouldn’t be wearing a big league uniform the way he hits and runs. And while he can throw well to second, he misses too many balls and his game calling is nothing special.

NYMBosco August 4, 2008 at 9:06 am

I agree 100%. Schneider should be playing if castro is hurt. I don’t think Jerry Manual likes Schneider since it seems he has reduced him to a part time player. Schneider may not have much of a bat but he is a better defensive catcher and he calls a good game for the pitchers. Jerry needs to reconsider putting in a third string catcher in a pennant race!

the Straw August 4, 2008 at 9:09 am

Schneider should NOT be playing against a left-handed pitcher. Cancel was the right guy yesterday, considering Castro was hurting.

NickA33 August 4, 2008 at 8:37 am

I realize these players are all of major league talen (arguable I know) but shouldn’t all players be given the sign to steal instead of stealing on their own? In my opinion the only players who should be able to steal on their own are Reyes, Beltran and Wright.

And even the above list is debatable. I’ll even narrow it down to Reyes, simply because of his speed.

When you’re in a situation where you’re in scoring postion, with Wright at the plate, what on Earth would posses you to attempt to steal 3rd base? Seriously.

das2ble August 4, 2008 at 8:45 am

it is obvious that cancel does not know anything about baserunning. He would not have scored against the reds if they did not make the error and the mets would have had him on 3rd with two out.

he got really lucky in the phillies game – i personally do not think he did anything special but he got praise because he did not mess up as bad as they had thought he would have.

And yesterday was the exact proof of that. Someone has to take him aside and explain how baseball works.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING THAT EVERYONE ELSE KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON IN 99% OF THE SITUATIONS AND YET THE PLAYERS DO NOT!!

GravediggerHebner August 4, 2008 at 10:09 am

“IT IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING THAT EVERYONE ELSE KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON IN 99% OF THE SITUATIONS AND YET THE PLAYERS DO NOT!!”

In fairness to Cancel, the ‘deer in the headlights’ syndrome only happens to, well, the deer in the headlights. It’s easy to know what to do under zero pressure sitting in a comfy chair at home with one’s favorites snack.

das2ble August 4, 2008 at 10:57 am

Come on GravediggerHebner…..you have to know the quote from iamatwork below:

“Never, ever, make the first or third out of an inning at third base”

That has nothing to do with sitting on the couch – it has EVERYTHING to do with just plain baseball knowledge, which Cancel lacks!

He has no situational understanding! Even if I was sitting on the couch eating potato chips while on second base with two outs I would know this! It is as simple as that.

iamatwork August 4, 2008 at 9:00 am

Never, ever, make the first or third out of an inning at third base.

Knuckler August 4, 2008 at 9:01 am

What a crummy weekend! I hope home does us some good.

jrs1940 August 4, 2008 at 9:03 am

Can’t we send someone from the Mets organization with a truck down to Home Depot to look for some bullpen help in the parking lot?

foul bunt strikeout August 4, 2008 at 9:10 am

great way to start a monday…

have a philly fan tell me that the season is over and that 3 games is afr too much to make up being that we only have 2 remaining with them.

I told him that it’d be nice for his team top get their first win in the playoffs since 1993 and he quieted down pretty quickly.

please lets give some payback to the padres

foul bunt strikeout August 4, 2008 at 9:11 am

wow please excuse the poor spelling and typos

i blame this on Cancel!

WozzyBear August 4, 2008 at 9:15 am

In the words of the great Steve Sommers: The NY Mets are a team with 3 catchers and 2 outfielders. Enough said.

Gina August 4, 2008 at 9:22 am

Ugh. It’s funny and sad at the same time

BITHED420 August 4, 2008 at 11:00 am

actually steve summers would have said the new york metropolitans

hi5wright August 4, 2008 at 4:24 pm

“I’ll tell you you why you have to love the New York Mets: they are the only team in baseball that has 3 catchers and 2 outfielders”
Gotta love Steve. Listening to him is like therapy (that the Mets have caused me to need)

whynot1 August 4, 2008 at 9:20 am

Although Cancel had no business running, he probably would have been safe except he was looking in at home the whole time and then went into an awful slide by taking a bunch of short choppy steps before he hit the dirt.

And to contrast, when the Astros make a bone-headed baserunning play on Sat. night they luck out, b/c if Loretta scores easily in the ninth as he should have, Castro would have had more time to react and tag Pence without getting plowed over.

WozzyBear August 4, 2008 at 9:44 am

Or Castro could have used his brain and realized that with the bases loaded, the first guy coming home was a force out, so all he had to do was catch the ball and step on the plate.

How Cohen and Hernandez ignored this blatantly obvious fact on the broadcast is beyond me.

METS MENTAL GAME: NEGATIVE ZERO!

90 percent mental….10 percent talent.

Mets only showed their 10 percent of the game.

that equals=a good, not a great club!

ToastyJoe August 4, 2008 at 10:50 am

There is no such thing as negative zero.

krispy644 August 4, 2008 at 10:13 pm

I know that lmao

the point is that they have a very weak mental game.

mikepelfreyismyguy August 4, 2008 at 9:59 am

that was a bad move, but braindead, no, this guy isnt a proven player at all, dont you think that you know manuel was friggin brain dead twice when he didnt let johan go 9 twice against philly?

there is a reason why he was a .500 manager in chicago, and a reason why he was fired, and a reason that he is only interem. dont get comfortable with this guy. bring back BOBBY V

nobeers August 4, 2008 at 10:13 am

Didnt Bobby V say that he didnt want to come back?
