Buzz: Mets Among 12 Teams to Scout Garcia
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 5, 2008 7:10 am

According to the New York Post, “The Mets are expected to be in the running for veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia,” who will work out in front of teams today at the University of Miami.

Garcia’s agent, Peter Greenberg, told the Post that, while the pitcher is not yet 100 percent, “we expect that after a few minor league appearances he should be able to help somebody in September and in October.”

from what i can gather, up to 12 teams are expected to be in Miami today to check out garcia, including the Mets and Yankees…

Garcia won 14 games in 2005 and 17 games in 2006 for the White Sox, but was just 1–5 with a 5.90 ERA during 11 starts for the Phillies last season.

If the Mets sign Garcia would that mean Pedro to the bulpen?

    • m00kie says:

between maine and pedro, we need another guy around .. who knows what might befall the rest of the staff as well.

    • RodKanehl says:

right guy… Garcia is taking Pedro’s spot in the rotation, even tho he is still damaged goods and hasn’t thrown live in over a year. He’ll be ready when the Mets are eliminated.

      • Steviefan84 says:

At this point, Mets need as many guys they can get. Maine is hurt and Pedro is always a question mark. Garcia will not help but he’ll be there.

        • mikepelfreyismyguy says:

i think that garcia will work out of the bullpen as the long man or a spot starter.

  2. Hellbelly says:

……..in related news, Mets scouts were seen near the grave site of Hall-of-Fame left hander Warren Spahn and are rumored to be thinking about making an offer for the 363 game winner.

  3. Fiya Minaya says:

Not yet 100%? Not a problem with Minaya… he did give a cripple a four year contract. Let’s bid against ourselves and give Garcia a monster contract to entice this mediocre (when healthy) quantity.

  4. ericfromwestchester says:

I’m just really confused… are we going for it or not? A major youth surge combined with a failure to trade at the deadline suggest that we’re not really in it to win it and we’ve got our eyes on the future, while reports like this one suggest otherwise.

    • m00kie says:

not trading for expired superstars, marginal players, or malcontents somehow means we’re not in it to win it? Getting the youth in was an attempt to infuse some energy into this bunch. We’ve got the frame to make this happen. Will the players make it happen? Still remains to be seen. The bullpen has me skeptical that it’s going to happen.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

The “youth surge” was to provide an alternative to either injured (Maine, Wags) or ineffective (Anderson, Chavez) players. It’s not as if the Mets unloaded their high-priced talent.

  5. LIMetfan74 says:

Id rather see them take a shot with Garcia than see them pick up Livan Hernandez. The lesser of two evils I guess.

  6. PhillyMet says:

So, you think there will be a little pressure on Kunz and the rest of these call-ups or what? These guys better produce down the stretch or Minaya will be the next one to go. With that said, I don’t any of the possible trades out there would have dramatically altered this team’s makeup. Our farm is thin, and honestly, who are we kidding. This team does not have the makeup or psyche of a championship-calibre club.

Speaking of trades…Marte is definitely getting a does of NYC pressure now that he’s out of that baseball cesspool in Pittsburgh. Geez, a grand salami last night!

    • starz31 says:

Yea i saw that…he actually pitched out of a huge jam the inning before too, (he was called in, he didnt start the jam)

  7. DLo says:

You’ve got to think they could be looking at this as a move that would be more for helping out with next year. With Pedro and Ollie coming off the books, Garcia could be a relative bargain compared to other FAs if he’s signed for next year now.

Problem is I’m sure he’d be looking to go at a discount only for the remainder of the year and looking to cash in on being healthy and productive for next season. But is he going to be able to make enough starts this year to convince anyone he’s worth a big contract?

  8. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

Tired of the conjecture…I just want to watch a baseball game already, thank god we have 23 straight games…all these lame opinions are getting me very frustrated…nobody knows anything until it happens..and all this bs would stop if the mets swept this pads this week….

    • starz31 says:

i hate off days. I don’t know what to do at night.

But I really dont understand why Billy Wagner had an off day. Wouldn’t you think there would be some incentive to get an MRI as quick as possible? not, lets take monday off and do it tuesday? Even if yesterday was a travel day, which I think they flew back sunday night, it only takes 15 min to get it done. This is a professional sports team we are talking about with millions of dollars at stake. Or maybe they just know he is gonna go to the DL and they just dont need to rush. I dont know, but that sounds odd.

  9. stearnsfan12 says:

If signing Freddy Garcia is the answer, I imagine the question has to be something along the lines of, “How do you know the Mets are out of the race?”

I liked him when he was healthy. He was great when he was in Chicago. I suppose it would not cost much to sign him and see if he can get healthy for us. good fortune owes us one with all the injuries lately so why not?

  10. Jaded1983 says:

I know this is NY and all, and being in the largest market in the country comes the pressure to win now, win tomorrow, and win the next day, but obviously that is not reality.

As you all know, teams take years to build, 2006 was our year and it didnt happen. Now those FA signings are coming to the end of their tenure and usefullness, isnt it apparent that the Mets are in a rebuilding phase?

The team is capable of making the post season, but I just don’t see them going that far. (although who knows, the post season is a cr*p shoot)

that said, we are in a “rebuilding phase,” imo and still contenders. Garcia would add depth and if 100% could be pedro’s replacement next year. a potential rotation of Santana, Maine, Ollie, Pelfrey, Garcia would leave money and time to be spent on other needs the mets have. (the bullpen for one)

I can take not winning this year IF and i stress IF, that means a large amount of youth is put into this team, whether that is via trade or through our farm then i will be happy.

our farm guys may not be superstars, but i want to root for them and i want them to win and be succesful. i know a lot of you, my fellow met fans, like to call a spade a spade, but i want to see the murphy’s, the carps, the evans, the nieses, the a. reyes’, etc in the line up. to me it makes the team dynamic and fun to watch. even though they may not be ready, or the best, they run and play very hard (ie murphys catch the other day)

that sort of thing is exciting and makes for great baseball. basically what im saying is lets be positive guys, lets root for our team, for our guys, and realize that we are seeing the beggining of a great team.

    Lets go Mets!

    • starz31 says:

I hear what your saying. I wouldn’t call it a real rebuilding phase, more like a transitional period. We have the talent to win games, and we have shown that we can go on a streak, but we’re just way too inconsistent. But overall, we have a solid core of experienced young players (Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Pelfrey, Johan, Maine).

The thing about winning the world series though, is that its a crapshoot. Once you get to the playoffs, anything can happen. Teams can come from behind 3-0 in the ALCS, or teams can be the worst team ever to win the W.S. (Cardinals). We have the talent to hit a winning streak in the playoffs and win it all, no question. I would like a lil more confidence with the bullpen to do so, but we have the talent to take control. The real underlining layer here, in order to enter this free for all, is that we have to get to the playoffs. And with this current team, anything is up in the air.

  11. iamatwork says:

Maybe they should call up Val Pascucci to pitch! He’s super good OMG! AAAA All-Star! (Extra A intentional).

What does it hurt to watch him throw?

    • starz31 says:

it really couldn’t hurt. I mean if a guy like Nick Evans is playing in the big leagues, then why can’t the italian stallion?

      • Gina says:

Because Nick Evans is 21 year old prospect .And Pascucci is a 30 year old career AAAA player?

        • starz31 says:

right but Nick Evans is not going to be an everyday player for this team…ever. I dont see why not bring a guy who, ok yea he is a career AAAA guy, but he’s been hitting the ball well, so give him a chance. COuld he really be much worse than nick evans? And you never know what could happen. I mean Tatis hasn’t played at all the past few years and he’s been raking it,(for the most part of the season)

  12. ksuth says:

Does anyone think we’ll resign Ollie?

    • Gina says:

I hope we do. I really can’t think of many reasons not too.

      • starz31 says:

maybe 5 years and 75 million $ . id say thats a reason not too. Less than that, and I am all ears. But he’s gonna be seeking multi years and alot of money. Scott Boras is his agent.

        • Gina says:

What pitching free agent is just as effective of a pitcher and going to be asking less. When you factor in talent, contract demands, and age/injury risk IMO Perez is the best choice on the free agent market.

    • Jaded1983 says:

i have a good feeling we will.

      • Coolpapabell says:

I hope we resign Ollie. I also think the Garcia makes sense in that he shores up the back end of the rotation next year, and if falters then Niese can come and take his spot, or fill in for injuries. Boy would Ben Sheets look good in a three year deal though. I think Ollie is a priority though.

I also think Orlando Hudson should be in blue and orange next year on a four year deal. Admit a mistake was made with Castillo eat a good deal of the contract and trade him for middle relief.

        • Gina says:

If Orlando Hudson’s contract demands are close to what’s being reported, 17 per. Then I’d rather have Castillo, at least we can eat the last few years of Castillo’s contract. Hudson’s defense isn’t better, he’s the same age, and his bat in my opinion would be an upgrade but not a difference maker in this line-up. I’d rather spend that money on pitching and going after a power bat like Dunn, or Tex depending on the contract demands, or trading for one. If they fill the holes in the rotation with free agents then they can afford to trade guys like Niese or Parnell for a big bat IMO.

        • Coolpapabell says:

I must admit that I am surprised that o-dog would seriously ask for such $17M. I have read that he wants something in the $14-15M range. I also read that he was looking towards the Mets and was willing to give the a discount. I believe that was from Jayson Stark.

I would give O-dog a $10-11M over three to four years. O-dogs range is way better than Castillo’s is a this point in their careers. I don’t think Dunn’s glove will play at Citi and Tex is going to the Yankees.

I say go the Defense and Pitching route. With a healthy Church in right, We can get by with a platoon situation in LF if we have solid enough pitching. Niese is to valuable but I feel that Parnell should go.

I feel it might be worth our while to wait for the 2010 off seawson with Holiday.

        • krispy644 says:

you see how Omar doesnt think? desperate to fill a hole at second base but he didnt need to sign Castillo to that dumb contract. and with Hudson (back-to-back gold glove years, hitting .300) going to be a free agent it appears Omar was too impatient!!

  13. Gina says:

Unless there are no teams that would be willing to give him a starting job I’m not sure why he would choose to sign with us. And unless we’re planning on using him as a long-man or moving someone else out of the rotation to that spot I’m not sure how much help he’ll be.

Also I don’t think rebuilding is the right word. More like retooling. Rebuilding usually involves selling, which we didn’t do either. If Beltran or Wagner get moved in the off-season, and with Wagner if we don’t go after K-rod, then I’d say we’re rebuilding. Right now I think Omar just thinks there were too many holes to fill at the deadline.

    • npanzeca says:

Isn’t the fact we have too many holes to fill have some to do with the way our GM has handled the last 2 years?

      • starz31 says:

I agree. Yes we traded away 4 prospects for JOhan, but even so, Omar has not taken the steps to provide depth at the ML level. Last year included. We have these unproven AA kids, and I love watching them, but there should have been more steps taken to have depth. Did he really think ALou wasn’t gonna go down? We had Pagan, who would have had a great year (think Dejesus quality) so I cant fault him for him or Church getting hurt. But the bench is supposed to be just that…the bench. They provide spot starts, defensive replacements, and pinch hits. They are not supposed to be relied on for long periods of time.

        • AngryFan says:

How about the neglect of the farm? crappy college relievers and 16 yr old Dominican kids = nothing helpful

        • AngryFan says:

PS- Stop with Pagan please. He was back to stinking up the joint before he got hurt. He’s a career baseball nonentity. All of a sudden he was going to have a year like a useful DeJesus???!?

        • starz31 says:

Yes…I think he has the talent to do so. He had a great offseason playing and winning in several leagues. Dejesus and Pagan are comparable in talents.. They both resemble a lesser Beltran. I think Pagan had turned the corner in his career, he is young and relatively inexperienced (think Nady when we got him). So yes, I stand by my proclamation.

      • Gina says:

It might be because instead of making smaller deals to fill those holes he made one big move to get Santana. What else could he have done?

  14. dave27 says:

Signing Garcia will be a smart move….by September the daily injury updates might be waning, so some “fresh” blood will be nice.

  15. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

i think you know, signing ollie would be the smartest move that omar would make, if he was still the general manager, the thing is, that im hoping that it is somewhere along the line of 5 years 60 mil, bargain and i think ollie found it, really, i mean he pitched out of jams in houston, it was tough luck. do you know that scott boras refused to save a kid that was drowning cuz he couldnt swim until his grandmother payed 30 mill, then he bargained and said pay 10 mil and the rest later, then he was rescued by a tuna boat. true story, that guy makes me sick

  16. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

in other news, FREDDIE GARCIA IS OVERRATED>. HE IS LIKE CARL PAVANO.

  17. X-Man says:

Well, based on the contract the Mets were willing to give Castillo, Garcia must be licking his chops. I read a post on this blog at a different thread that Castillo’s salary next year is higher than DWight’s and Jose Reyes? If that’s true (Too lazy to look it up) then it’s a total joke. A Gimpy, Pre-Maturely over the hill “slap” hitter making more than two ALL-STARs? Unbelievable……………………………… Speachless.

  18. Elastic says:

    Scraper meet barrel

  19. adenzeno says:

Bottom of barrel!! Just bring up the youngsters and see if they can do it!
