Because he was the best Catcher in the Fla state
league in '06 At 21, at 20 he was having a fine season and regarded as a top prospect but broke
his hand missing half the season. In his 1st yr in
pro-ball @19 was his teams MVP in Rookie ball.
But Sorry for lumping you to the "We can't trade FMart for anyone" Crowd. The Manny thing really
STILL has me crazy.

When did I say we can't move evan's/murphy's/parnells/nieses of the world? I was a supporter of moving F-mart and/or Niese for Bay. And I don't think Omar is a great gm, I just don't see what things he could have done things much differently.

And Flores was a 22 year old catcher who'd never played above A ball and had a sub .800 ops in a ball, why would anyone expect a team to use a roster spot on him.

Gina,I'm trying! But I'm having a hard time understanding your thinking on all this.
We give up on Milledge@22 after 300ABs,we give
up on Flores@22 for nothing BUT The Evans',Murphys,Nieces and Parnells of the world
we cant deal even if two of them brought us Manny,
Bay,Nady and/or Marte greatly enhancing our chances to win this year THUS justifing the moving
of Mills and losing of flores in the 1st place.
Again,very respectfully I dont understand.
Is it possible that you've made your mind-up that
omars not such a bad GM and you argue to prove
that point? If so,no need to. I was a great Omar
supporter until about the last season when its become clear. He def has biases,is quick to
overpay and wants to impose his will on everything
even things he shouldnt i.e.coaches,interfering w/
players,the clubhouse etc..

Personally, I would have kept Milledge and played Estrada for this year. We could have paid Estrada $3 million for one year to be bad, rather than pay Schneider $10 million for two years to be worse.

This organization got rid of Milledge way too quickly. He was only 22 last year and had a grand total of like 150 ABs in the majors. Of course he was going to struggle. I still say Milledge is going to be an above average outfielder in this league for 10-12 years. Meanwhile, the Mets better hope Havens gets on the fast track to the big leagues as a catcher, and to be honest with you all, I doubt we ever see the Ryan Church of April and May again.

Be creative. Could have signed Kendall to Catch.
He took a one year contract from Mil. We'd still have
Millage flip him for quality and if you can't,keep him and theres your RFer.As for second base,I debated
this all winterand spring(under diff screenname) AND the Castillo signing was,is and will be a disaster for this club. No need to mention,Eckstein,
Gotay or anyone else again. And at the time you dont
think a Kevin Millar type would have been avail to hit
righty for Delgado and play a little left/rightfield?
Or a similar player/ C'mon! Again, Look what a
kenny Williams has done compared to omar and
his job rating is shameful.

I agree about him selling low on Milledge which is why I hated the trade at the time too and still am not a fan of the trade, but at the time Milledge was coming off an injury plagued season and was still struggling in the majors, we had question marks at the corner of spots and catcher. How many choices did he have? Other than throwing in the towel on 08 and proclaiming it a retooling/rebuilding season for 09. Which I wouldn't have had a problem with but I imagine most of the fans wouldn't share my sentiment. When you look at all the holes/question marks we had coming into this season and what we had to work with in terms of trade bait I think Omar did a pretty good job.

Thank you Maine!-When i saw the trade of Millage
along the ESpN crawl and Saw "For C/Scheider
and OF/Church" I Knew I must have missed something i.e. RAuch or Cordero and almost
broke a neck running to my laptop. Still dont believe
thats all we could have got. And like I stated here
during the winter Holidays if that was all Lasto could
bring in then, You keep, give HIM RF and sign Jason
Kendall for a year. But hey omar knows better.
Right?

He should he have signed/brought in? Trading for someone better caliber than Pagan really wasn't an option with the Santana trade. Going into the off-season we had no second basemen, no corner outfielders, no catcher, only two pitchers who could be counted on, as well as a question mark at 1b with whether Delgado would bounce back from a terrible season. He got us a starting catcher and right fielder and Johan Santana, and a second basemen, what more could he have done. Would I have liked him to trade for Quentin or Swisher or someone else? Sure, but what prospects did we have to offer when we were trying to go after Santana? I don't think Omar is a great gm, I think he's good but not amazing or anything, but what else could he have done?
