News: Shea Selling Seats for $869
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 5, 2008 11:00 am

The Mets recently sent out the following e-mail to Season Ticket, Combo and Weekday Plan Holders:

“We have received a number of inquiries regarding the dismantling of Shea following the 2008 season and access to purchase memorabilia from Shea.  We are pleased to advise that the Mets - in partnership with the City of New York which owns and operates Shea Stadium - are offering you the first opportunity to purchase a pair of YOUR seats from Shea Stadium.

“The cost of the pairs of seats is $869 during this limited-time, exclusive offer.

“Proceeds from the Mets’ share of net revenues generated through the sale of seat pairs will be donated to the Mets Foundation, which will distribute the funds to various charities.”

i assume the established price is a combination of the numbers 86 and 69, as in 1986 and 1969, the two seasons during which the Mets won a World Series…very clever

…i do not own any sort of season ticket plan, so i do not have an opinion on whether this is a good price, bad price, whether it’s fair, etc., and so i am curious to see what the response is like among people who do and who wanted to own an actual seat as memorabilia

    $434.5 per seat. That’s fine.

    • zer09 says:

Ofcourse they could have also said that it’s $86.69 per seat or would that be too low?

  2. metsdude13 says:

$869 for two broken, sh*tty seats? That’s almost as bad as $9 Bud Lights.

What a joke this organization is becoming.

    Are they joking with this?

    • chaseh says:

It doesn’t go into their pockets. Why the attitude? It’s nice that it’s available for those who want it, and the money goes to charity.

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Wouldn’t this be a considered a tax write off?

      • iamatwork says:

The portion that is donated would be deductible IF you itemize your deductions. Since like 94% of Americans didn’t itemize in 2006 (2007 numbers aren’t out yet), the answer will be, as short as possible, no.

Plus, $869 is insane. How about $50/seat? They’ll be paying $ to dump them otherwise. Absurd!

        • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Thanks iamatwork…Either way, it’s not worth it. I do understand the money will go to charity. In some parts that money doesn’t cover rent. Let alone an old worn out seat from Shea!

        • iamatwork says:

I agree with you. Plus, you know, GREAT HAIR!

        • zer09 says:

“The portion that is donated would be deductible IF you itemize your deductions. Since like 94% of Americans didn’t itemize in 2006 (2007 numbers aren’t out yet), the answer will be, as short as possible, no.”

You should just stop after the first sentence. The question was whether it would be considered a tax write off - to which the answer is “yes”. It’s a considerable enough amount to claim separately on the return (unless you’re making a ton of money). Whether the person is smart enough to claim it is a whole other story…

  3. molder says:

I was really hoping to buy a seat, but I don’t think I can justify spending $400+ for a single seat

  4. Cactus says:

I would say the $869 price is a combination of “ridiculous” and “absurd”.

    • ksuth says:

agreed, however, i wonder how many lunatics are actually buying these up

      • Cactus says:

Well is is cheaper than the cost of a family of four to go to a game at Citifield next year.

        • mrose says:

ok now that people are able to buy tickets, you should probably eat crow.

My tickets were CHEAPER for next year than this year and i’m closer..
so please, lets stop with that crap

        • Andrew says:

When field level tickets start at $125, when the current field level, first base-side tickets (for Saturdays) that my dad and I have are like $80, how exactly are you getting off cheaper?

        • mrose says:

I just got a call and paid for Promenade seats , closer to home plate, row 5 and i’m paying about $5 less per ticket. And no offense bro, but I somehow don’t believe your current tickets are $80

        • shea1012 says:

Agreed. I have a pair in Mezz Reserved and were offered promenade reserved for $25 per ticket - much cheaper than my average ticket this year.

Also - I am definitely buying the seats.

Lastly - is anyone interested in splitting my seasons with me next year? I can’t swing the whole lot - we will split playoff games also.

          john . bluemke @gmail .com

        • Andrew says:

Right, mrose, because I have a reason to lie here about the price I pay for tickets.

        • Cactus says:

The prices at the new stadium remain overall disgusting despite keeping some upper deck seats around 2007 levels so it looks like they are making seats “cheaper” to get the Met apologists on their side.

That is of course after huge price increases after 2006 and 2007. So “cheaper” is a dupe to begin with.

Of course if you don’t buy season tickets or a package you won’t have access to those “cheaper” upper deck seats since 500 thousand people will be going for them as they are the only reasonably priced tickets. ($75 minimum per seat to sit anywhere else)

For seasons, 4 box seats have gone from 17k in 2006, to 20k in 2007, to 24k in 2008, to 57k in the new stadium. Loge box seats have gone from 9k to 11k to 13k to 28k in the new stadium.

          It’s disgusting.

        • mrose says:

well, one “met apologist” could argue that people who need to spend that kind of money on field level even in past years are ticket snobs. I’ve always been more than comfy in the upper deck, obviously I jump at a chance to sit field level from time to time, but why not take a look at prices around baseball, specifically new stadiums and their increases over time before you single out the mets as being disgusting. How about , mlb being successful being disgusting? or a business being a business being disgusting.

And Andrew, see, I prefaced my comments with “no offense”, but apparently you’d still like to get your panties in a bunch. That is simply my opinion

        • Cactus says:

so basically the argument is everyone else is disgusting so don’t single out the poor mets, despite there being available reasonably priced tickets in every new stadium except this one and the new dump in the bronx.

btw, this business won’t remain successful if it prices out too many of its supporters. i am sure i am not alone that after going to 10-15 games a year at shea i have no desire to pay the prices to go to this new stadium. and that’s just ticket prices…i can only imagine what parking and concessions will cost.

        • batsinthepelfrey says:

and mrose, the middle field box seats are 80 per. outer field and loge boxes are 54. don’t know why that is so hard to believe or you would have an “opinion” on that when you can simply look on the mets site and check it out.

the ticket price increases from 80 to 125 and from 54 -80 for field level are ridiculous. and so is 869 for 2 seats. only way i’ll plunk down the money for them is if somehow i can be confident i can resell them for a profit and start paying down my bill for next year.

        • Andrew says:

I’m not offended, mrose, despite the fact that you’re trying to offend me (panties in a bunch, eh?).

But here’s a ticket from this year:

Mets vs. Cardinals, game 52. July 26. A gold game, according to my schedule. Field box 235, section C, seat 5. $89.

So, you know, extrapolate down for the bronze, silver and value-priced games. I believe they go down as far as $72 for the bronze, but I don’t know about the value because no Saturday games are ever value-priced.

      • Steviefan84 says:

I’m not shelling out anymore money than I have to. I’m a huge Mets fan but I don’t want Shea seats even if they were around $50. The economy is bad enough with everything on the rise, so buying this stuff just makes it unnecessary. Now if they were offering these seats which would pay bills that might be another story. lol

    • pezao says:

I love the scoff thinly veiled in a semi-plausible conjecture.

  5. mrose says:

how bout $86.69 that works MUCH better or $69.86

  6. Larry_Bowa says:

I have the Shea Goodbye seven-pack this year and I didn’t get an E-mail about seats.

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

you have to be a full season ticket holder…and those of you that are complaining about the price…remember that the proceeds are going to charity!

      • metsdude13 says:

If I wanted to donate a thousand bucks to charity, I’d feel a lot better choosing my own charity, thank you very much.

        • metinDC23 says:

But then you wouldn’t get a broken, beer stained seat!

        • pezao says:

yes, a broken, beer stained seat that would otherwise find its way to a landfill….

        • chaseh says:

“If I wanted to donate a thousand bucks to charity, I’d feel a lot better choosing my own charity, thank you very much.”

          That’s a BIG if!

        • Steviefan84 says:

I wouldn’t want a broken stained seat that someone spat on or worse. lol

        • batsinthepelfrey says:

“Proceeds from the Mets’ share of net revenues generated through the sale of seat pairs will be donated to the Mets Foundation, which will distribute the funds to various charities”

the city owns the seats, i am guessing that the majority of the money goes to them. deductions will be minimal and the price is ridiculous.

      • Felix the Cat says:

I’m a full season ticket holder and didn’t get the email either. This is the first I’ve heard of it.

  7. metsdude13 says:

Hm…42″ Plasma TV, or two broken, paint-chipped chairs from Shea Stadium whose seat falls through if anyone over 100 punds sits on them…..

I think I’ll take the Plasma.

  8. the_other_matt says:

“…i do not own any sort of season ticket plan - never have, never will”

Matt I think you meant to say “…I do not own any sort of season ticket plan — I don’t own anything about it.”

  9. mrmustseetv says:

“i do not own any sort of season ticket plan - never have, never will…..”

Matt, I thought you were going to pull a Guisseppe Franco and say “Well, I don’t own a season ticket plan. I don’t own anything about it.” :)

    • the_other_matt says:

      that’s creepy…look above.

      • mrmustseetv says:

GET OUT OF MY THOUGHTS! :)

      • GravediggerHebner says:

This creepiness suggests that either Procede needs to make a new commercial or SNY needs to find a new sponsor. Either one would make me happy.

        • mrmustseetv says:

They should hire Guissepe Franco in Kevin Burkhardt’s place and have him walk around the stadium commenting on people’s hair or trying to hock Procede during games.

Gary: Guissepe, I heard you had an interesting story regarding tonight’s pitcher Mike Pelfrey.

Guisseppe: Yes, he’s balding. I talked to him early and tried to sell him some Procede that I usually sell for $400 in my salon for only $20, because any idiot would realize that the price differential means you’re not getting the same thing.

Keith: Uh, Guissepe anything to comment that is baseball related?

Guissepe: Shut up Keith. You’re hocking your Just for Men let me do my Procede commercial. Besides, “you’re stach is trash.”!

Unlike you I don’t own this company. I don’t own anything about it!

          Gary: Let’s go to commercial.

          Guisseppe: YES MY COMMERCIAL!

  10. ahofstet says:

I’ve bought pairs of seats from other defunct stadiums directly from the teams, and this is almost double the highest price I’ve paid. The Vet was the cheapest, at $280 a pair. $869 is a ripoff to say the least. But I’ll bet the Yankee Stadium seats will go for at least $1,000.

    • starz31 says:

      its NYC…enough said.

    • shortstop says:

I’ve picked up a few seats out of MLB stadiums over the years:

      Crosley Field 1972: $0

Yankee Stadium 1973: $15 (now the most valuable piece of furniture I own.)

      Fulton County Stadium 1995 or 6: $35.

  11. molder says:

You know I always used to think he said “I don’t KNOW anything about it,” think it made it even funnier him promoting a product he knows absolutely nothing about, yet he will put his reputation on the line for it.

And do they really need to make $25 million off JUST selling crappy seats?

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Yes because it will cover Moises Alou’s new 3 year extension
      :-)

      • DjDeF says:

It is going to charity but why would we want to look at facts when complaining. Its what met fans do best.

        • Cactus says:

I’d love to see the books on this charity and how much actually gets donated. You do realize they have to pay salaries and other expenses, then the remaining money goes to charity. If strongly doubt the salary Jeff Wilpon is drawing from the “Met Foundation” is peanuts.

        • batsinthepelfrey says:

its going to the city. only mets portion going to charity. probably just threw that in there so it didnt look like such a money grab

      • fongulalou says:

Now THAT was funny! Truth and Irony.
        BUT PLEASE, Don’t temt Omar/Ownership!
Afterall Moises IS aSolid citizen and good for the
        clubhouses chemistry.

  12. fortleemets says:

There is no chance that they sell the 55,000 seats at that price. Selling all of those seats at that price is $24 million or pure profit.

    • starz31 says:

i dont think they have 55,000 season ticket holders.

Now they may open it to the public though after those holders have their choice.

    • egnirc says:

Not defending the pricing but, realize that theres only going to be less than 22,500 PAIRs of seats.

And being that most of the seats are banged up that brings that number lower. And then to make those seats usable they have to rig up L joints to a platform.

  13. BaysideBillyD says:

I can’t believe that they are asking so much for those seats.
I am a Season Ticket holder, and there is no way in hell I would pay more than $100 per seat.

And by the way, my seats are cheaper next year too!
    Comparable seat too!
    Pretty cool.

    • dcatmets41 says:

mine are cheaper as well, but they are now reserve and not box seats. dont think they are giving anything for free, come on now you should know better than that.

  14. HoJoWright says:

well, if we all switch to Geico we may be able to afford. it takes 15 minutes or less.

  15. DaveSchneck says:

Charity or no, this is just another example of grossly overpriced memorabilia. Why the heck anyone would want to spent that kind of dough on 2, uh, chairs is beyond me.

  16. irish_eagle says:

$869 - Uggh. A few years ago Gaelic Park (2 years ago, I think) o in the Bronx was renovated by the new owners, Manhattan College. Few enough people were aware of this, but Gaelic Park had seats from the old Polo Grounds and the College just dumped them.

If people are willing to pay $800+ for two Shea seats - of which there are 55,000 - what would the price have been for some of the few remaining Polo Grounds seats (I think there were about 100 in Gaelic Park).

Oh well. I was sick when I heard what had happened to those seats, but it was all over before I found out.

  17. fasteddiehearn says:

allow me to nitpick for a moment on citifield:
i know wilpon’s connection to koufax and the brooklyn dodgers and im as excited as anyone else to have a new stadium next year. however, one thing that bothers me a little is that the mets new stadium is a throwback to ebbets field. i was born in the early ’80’s and have no connection whatsoever to the dodgers franchise (as i imagine anyone esle who knows how to post on a site like this one), so far as im concerned, if the dodgers stayed in bk and for some reason the mets still formed in ‘62, id be a huge dodger hater. that said, as much of a dump shea stadium is its home- i wish citifield was more of the “shea 2 k” that i was hoping it would be, with at least some tributes to the cool neon ballplayers on the side and perhaps even painting it blue.

    • ericfromwestchester says:

Most of the original Mets fans were the Dodgers fans who didn’t want to cross over to the Yankees (a bitter rival) after their team left town. I guess CitiField is just a tribute to that. I’m sure a lot of Mets fans can trace their Mets roots to that switch (people who have grandfathers and fathers that were converted Dodgers fans who then raised them as Mets fans).

  18. cousinrk says:

I’d love to get a seat from the big Shea, but no way can I justify paying that much for it. Its just insane. But I bet they’ll sell a ton, no doubt and then years down the road you’ll start seeing them pop up on Ebay. Probably not that far down the road but after the stadium is gone for a few years people will want to buy a seat I’m sure

    • molder says:

Yep and its not like theres little supply, with 55k seats out there they wont sky rocket to 869 PER seat….though I still think you will never see them cheaper than what the Mets will sell them directly to you for.

  19. Kevin Elster says:

If they sold all the seats it would almost cover the construction cost of Shea stadium.

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

That might be the most grossly idiotic statement ive ever heard…it’s called a calculator! Theres a big difference between 800 million and 21.725 mil…Just figured you should know that.

  20. makeitallwright says:

I wonder if they will contact past season ticket holders. My dad had tickets in 86 - the early 90s… he would love one of his seats!

    • ksuth says:

maybe if he was a former Brooklyn Dodger season ticket holder, but Mets history doesn’t mean much around Shea.

  21. Justin4383 says:

My father has a seat from the 1973 Yankee Stadium renovation. does anyone know what that would be worth today?

  22. RodKanehl says:

Yes, that seat is worthless just like the Yankees are.

  23. Hernandez_1B says:

Since everyone is talking about Citi Field, I have a Sunday ticket plan and have had it for the past 6 years. Do you guys think the Mets are gonna screw me along with other countless ticket plan holders by not offering us seats next year at Citi Field?? I personally thought all along that the Mets were using a ploy to get more people to buy full season tickets by offering them priority seating for Citi Field next year. What do you guys think?

  24. espo33 says:

They basically want to give away to charity for tax purposes. They collect money from people and use it to give to charities (of course promoting that they give back to the community) and get the tax refund to help them.

The price of the seats is BS.

    • boozermetsfan says:

anyone know who’s pitching tommorow? i got offered a free ticket to the game. what about saturday?

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

As an accountant..I can tell you that statement is wrong. The Mets do not get the tax writeoff on these seats, because they have already been depreciated to zero value.

  25. Jmiles says:

can I buy one of the urinals in the beautiful Shea bathrooms. The way the Mets are playing and everything that surrounds this team makes me believe that this could be the most valuable piece of memorabilia from Shea

  26. robrader1226 says:

Hold on… proceeds from the Mets share goes to charity. Not the whole amount. So when you take away what the company that is selling the seats makes (likely Steiner Sports) how much do you really think is goign to charity? Read the fine print boys and don’t give the Mets so much credit.

    • batsinthepelfrey says:

the city is getting the majority of the $ since they own the seats, that’s not charity. i’d guess maybe 10% is deductible and going to charity, simply for show.

  27. I wonder if they’re offering discounts for a package including a brick and seat? You know, kinda like the 2 for 1 beer stands they have at Shea right now.

  28. GeorgeThomas says:

If you click on the link in the email to actually purchase the seats you go to a web page that states “The Mets will donate their portion of the net proceeds to the Mets Foundation”. Does that mean that NY City will be keeping its chunk of the proceeds?

The page also has a banner that reads:

“Please note: Seat arm rests will be stripped and repainted
in their original color to meet standards for indoor use.”

    That’s a relief!

  29. AngryFan says:

Can I buy Mo Vaughn’s locker?

    • Justin4383 says:

That might cost alot. He would have needed a huge locker. Its prob bigger than my apartment

  30. fedas18 says:

I have the sunday package and was wondering if I am going to be able to purchase the seats? If any season ticket holder would be kind enough to bless me with his seats if they do not come available that would be oh so appreciated.

    edstein18@gmail.com

  31. twassel says:

I envy those whose tickets are cheaper. My group has seats in Loge section four, behind home plate (not boxes). We’ve been offered something in the Excelsior level, close to third base. Our ticket prices will go from an average of 46 dollars per seat to 115 dollars per seat. More than twice as much. I’m not happy.

  32. gradeck says:

Maybe you *should* have an opinion on this, Matt.

That you have turned being a Mets fan into a profession is remarkable (and admirable), but speaking up against the Mets’ escalating prices (even if you don’t pay them yourself) wouldn’t be a bad thing to do.
