News: Shea Selling Seats for $869

by Matthew Cerrone on August 5th, 2008 at 11:00 am

The Mets recently sent out the following e-mail to Season Ticket, Combo and Weekday Plan Holders:

“We have received a number of inquiries regarding the dismantling of Shea following the 2008 season and access to purchase memorabilia from Shea.  We are pleased to advise that the Mets – in partnership with the City of New York which owns and operates Shea Stadium – are offering you the first opportunity to purchase a pair of YOUR seats from Shea Stadium.

“The cost of the pairs of seats is $869 during this limited-time, exclusive offer.

“Proceeds from the Mets’ share of net revenues generated through the sale of seat pairs will be donated to the Mets Foundation, which will distribute the funds to various charities.”

i assume the established price is a combination of the numbers 86 and 69, as in 1986 and 1969, the two seasons during which the Mets won a World Series…very clever

…i do not own any sort of season ticket plan, so i do not have an opinion on whether this is a good price, bad price, whether it’s fair, etc., and so i am curious to see what the response is like among people who do and who wanted to own an actual seat as memorabilia

Note: Niese, Parnell or Vargas

by Matthew Cerrone on August 5th, 2008 at 9:44 am

Last night for Triple-A New Orleans, Mets LHP Jon Niese let up two runs and six hits in six innings.

The 21–year-old Niese is 2–0 with a 2.08 ERA in two starts at Triple-A.

i was hoping to see niese start for the Mets at Shea Stadium this weekend against the Marlins, filling in for the missing John Maine…the buzz around the team seems to suggest either niese, Claudio Vargas or Robert Parnell will be called upon to pitch either Friday or Saturday, depending on whether Oliver Perez is given an extra day of rest

For what it’s worth, according to Toby Hyde from Mets Minor League Blog, Mets GM Omar Minaya was in New Britain this past weekend to watch Parnell’s last start.

In 23 starts for Double-A Binghamton this season, the 23-year-old Parnell is 10–6 with a 4.33 ERA, while striking out 87 batters and walking 56 in 122 innings pitched.

Read: How Manny moved to LA

by Matthew Cerrone on August 5th, 2008 at 9:06 am

In a recent report for SI.com, Jon Heyman takes a closer look at how Manny Ramirez ended up being traded to the Dodgers.

Regarding the Mets and GM Omar Minaya, Heyman writes:

“Sources say that the Mets didn’t want to risk bringing Ramirez and all his baggage into their clubhouse.  But strangely, after the Mets had stood pat at the deadline, Minaya suggested on a conference call that the reason they couldn’t make a deal for Ramirez was that Boston had requested a big-league outfielder back.  That claim must have come from Minaya’s very vivid imagination and appears to have been an attempt to cover for the Mets or possibly refrain from exposing their true feelings about a Ramirez trade.  In reality the Red Sox had called the Mets and were told no, and that was the end of that.”

…Boston did want a big-league outfielder back, and got one in bay…also, why would the Mets have investigated a three-way deal to get manny, when, if such a deal was even possible for minaya, he likely would have wanted bay for himself

…also, yes, i am willing to bet minaya is mostly keeping his current feeling about ramirez quiet, out of respect for the player and out of fear of the player’s union, which is probably the more prudent thing to do

Buzz: Mets Among 12 Teams to Scout Garcia

by Matthew Cerrone on August 5th, 2008 at 7:10 am

According to the New York Post, “The Mets are expected to be in the running for veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia,” who will work out in front of teams today at the University of Miami.

Garcia’s agent, Peter Greenberg, told the Post that, while the pitcher is not yet 100 percent, “we expect that after a few minor league appearances he should be able to help somebody in September and in October.”

from what i can gather, up to 12 teams are expected to be in Miami today to check out garcia, including the Mets and Yankees…

Garcia won 14 games in 2005 and 17 games in 2006 for the White Sox, but was just 1–5 with a 5.90 ERA during 11 starts for the Phillies last season.
