Buzz: Mets are Interested in Rich Aurilia
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 6, 2008 1:20 pm

According to MLB.com, citing a ‘source,’ the Mets are interested in acquiring veteran infielder Rich Aurilia from the Giants.

Earlier this week, according to the San Jose Mercury, “A Mets official is following the Giants and has submitted a recommendation to acquire Aurilia.”

In 96 games for the Giants this season, the Brooklyn-born Aurilia, 36, is batting .281 with eight HR and 37 RBI.

Aurilia has played every position on the infield, but never the outfield, during his 11–year career.

    ???????????????????

    • nostradamus says:

ridiculous. another oldster who would not make a bit of difference in the standings.

    • BigDaddyKirk says:

      Sign Bonds

      • MetsFan234 says:

If Barry Bonds is not wanted by every MLB team, including the mets, what makes you think the Mets want to go out there and sign Barry Bonds. Even they don’t want him.

        • BigDaddyKirk says:

Well, we obviously need another outfielder, and Bonds would only cost money. He can hit better than any available player, and it will not cost Fernando Martinez to get him. But that’s okay. Let’s waste time trying to get Aurilia. That’s a much better plan.

        • rM teM says:

there’s no DH in the NL.

        • BigDaddyKirk says:

I am aware of that. I thought it was obvious that he would be signed to play the outfield, as he has done for his entire career. Perhaps I should be more clear in the future.

  2. dwright012 says:

Ugh.. unless he can catch I don’t want him on this team

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Forget catching…If he can pitch, I don’t want him on this team! :-D

  3. therealsince86 says:

Didn’t we already do this exact same post?

  4. mundo says:

WHY????? Don’t we already have enough infielders playing the outfield?

  5. Genesis Does says:

    Another infielder?

  6. mundo says:

It just dawned on me…he can be our closer!

  7. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

    why not????

anyway, i thought tatis carried the mets offense yesterday

  8. Nice hitter, but it doesn’t seem as if there is a place for him. Unless they were to cut Easley, which is not going to happen, or send Argenis down, which I’d prefer not to do right now.

  9. GeorgeThomas says:

He actually wouldn’t be a bad addition to the bench. He could back up Delgado and Wright. I like him better than Marlon Anderson.

    • I was just going to suggest him as a replacement for Marlon Anderson. But then again, he’s probably not much of an upgrade and I happen to like Marlon.

    • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

bingo. we can haggle over who he’d replace, Id vote for cancel, but the point is we have a 3rd rate bench and aurilia would help shore it up.

  10. MealTicket says:

    To play devil’s advocate here:

    He’s quite strong against lefties.

He can spell CD at first.

He allows Easley to move to the OF and give a strong righty platoon at second against lefties.

Evans can go to AAA and play every day.

    • I like the energy that the kids have brought to the team, so I’d really rather keep Evans on the club.

Tell ya what, I’ll take Aurilia over Castillo every darn day of the week though.

      • Tidewater says:

Has Evans (with that sour puss) really brought energy here? Murphy maybe, A. Reyes, maybe. But Evans?

  11. Darth Manuel says:

Ambiorix Burgos had his first minor league appearance of the season! Hopefully he can progress quickly and help our pen in September.

  12. Rich in Milford says:

Great. We collect catchers and infielders, when we need outfilders and pitchers.

  13. stumped1 says:

i can see a guy like him for the bench. why let a guy like evans sit on the bench when he should be playin everyday in the minors to improve his game.

  14. bigchart333 says:

yeah i tend to agree with the people on here that are saying OK to getting aurillia.

Yes, we probably need an OF, but wouldn’t you rather have Aurillia on this team than Cancel? Or even Nick Evans (even though he came up big last night and is hitting .300 over his last 9 games)….

it’s all a matter of who u give up. If it’s no one, Aurillia can’t hurt. He’s also one of the good guys. U can’t root against a guy like him. He plays the game the right way and is a model teammate.

Now im just about ready for another Adam Dunn or Matt Holiday post, thank u

    • Nate W. says:

      not particurally, no.

when Castillo comes back in a few days (like it or not) Damion Easley will turn into Rich Aurilia.

      This move makes no sense.

I want Evans and Murphy up so long as Church is out.

      • therealsince86 says:

Hopefully if Church is not back then Easley goes to the OF when Castillo is in the lineup.

        • Nate W. says:

do they really need another IF in the OF? I know he can handle LF/RF but I like his bench bat. They need someone(S) who can PH.

Unless we are for sending Evans and Murphy to the minors for Castillo and Aurilia I dont much sense in the move.

  15. MetsFan1989 says:

i was at the game last night and when tatis hit the home run the place exploded.

  16. mex84 says:

I live out here by San Fran and Aurilla is probably just as, if not more banged up then Castillo. He can barely run the basepaths anymore as evident by his runs scored this year. No thanks.

    • tomterrific says:

What’s the big deal? The rosters expand to 40 in September anyway and it gives us another veteran for depth during the stretch run month. Besides, I’d rather have Aurilia than Nick Evans right now.

      • mex84 says:

Whats he gonna cost though? If they send a nobody for him fine. I think we need to get Murphy alot of AB’s anyway. He seems like the real deal.
