Buzz: Mets Did Not put Claim in for Livan
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 7, 2008 10:13 am

Yesterday, upon reporting that Livan Hernandez had been claimed from waivers by the Rockies, Ken Rosenthal wrote at FoxSports.com, ‘The Rockies beat out another NL team with a better record.’

i think most people, including myself, assumed the mystery team from the NL had to be the Mets…

However, according to Peter Gammons at his blog for ESPN.com, “The Mets did not put in a claim for Hernandez because they believe John Maine will be back, and they’re willing to try Jon Niese if necessary.”

…speaking of niese, there is a lot of mixed buzz about whether he will start on Saturday, in place of maine…i have heard people suggest it will certainly go to Claudio Vargas, while others believe the Mets are waiting until the last minute to make announcement because it will be niese, meanwhile others assume it will be Brian Stokes, because he was pulled early from his last start in Triple-A

…i am still hoping for niese, as i believe most fans are

  1. Now the he’s a Rock, it really doesn’t matter – but I am glad to hear that Omar didn’t jump at this guy.

  2. Zoe says:

Matty, that first home wkend of spring training, was it that Dodger game we went to that Niese pitched? Or am I remembering another outing that weekend? He was surprisingly awesome.

  3. starz31 says:

I heard it might be Brian Stokes, who was scratched from his AAA start last night.

  4. Gil says:

Adam Rubin reports that Brian Stokes was pulled from his AAA start, indicating that he’s the Saturday starter. Rubin says that Vargas was grabbing his elbow following his last start, and that Niese is not expected to be used against the predominantly right-handed hitting Marlins.

Wow the injury bug isn’t only limited to the big league club, it’s spreading through the minors too.

  5. Steviefan84 says:

Most of the time I believe the media believes every baseball player that’s latino Omar “loves” especially from the expos. I don’t think Omar had much interest in Livan to begin with.

    • Tidewater says:

I was going to say something similar. Next time someone complains that Omar is latino-crazy, let us all remember that he did not pursue Livan when he easily could have. And thank goodness he didn’t!

      • Steviefan84 says:

Remember Sammy Sosa too, everyone said he wanted Sosa when Cliff Floyd was with the Mets. If Omar wanted him, he would of went after him hard like he did Santana and Delgado.

      • therealsince86 says:

Nor did he give up a big package for Manny who we “know” he has been in love with for years.

  6. Knuckles99 says:

Favre throwing first pitch at Shea today?

    • therealsince86 says:

Much rather him be throwing the last one today.

      • Knuckles99 says:

Woah! Someone is feeling witty today. Nice. hahaha

      • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Nah. Brett will more than likely join the team in a non-playing role in Cleveland tonight!

        • starz31 says:

he is supposed to be in NYC this morning though for a helicopter tour of NY and you never know, anythings possible. But yes, he will also join the Jets tonight in Cleveland. He will throw out a first pitch sometime this season I bet.

  7. gamblor says:

I bet it was the Astros that put in a claim for him. A team like Houston that’s poised to make a big run needs a good veteran innings-eater like Livan to bolster the rotation.

    • Steviefan84 says:

Livan is going to take the Rockies FAR … Actually more like other teams are going to take Livan far out of the ballpark. lol

    • LongJohnMaine says:

I wouldn’t doubt that. The stupidity of Ed Wade knows no boundaries.

  8. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Anyone notice on mlbtraderumors.com that both Sanchez and Showy cleared waivers? I doubt anything will happen there but still interesting to see.

  9. Steviefan84 says:

I didn’t even know they were on waivers. I would think someone would want Sho

    • Gina says:

Same here. I’m really surprised Scho cleared.

    • dwright012 says:

3.5 million is a lot of dough for a lefty specialist

      • Steviefan84 says:

True however he’s still better than most lefty relievers out there, Scho is holding lefties under .200 and that’s pretty good even if he makes a chunk of change.

        • dwright012 says:

If we all agree his stats are good.. then obviously its his pay check that allowed him to clear waivers.. that’s all I’m saying…

        • Steviefan84 says:

I’m actually glad Scho did, while Wagner is out, Mets will need him. Feliciano hasn’t been lights out either and it’s good to have another lefty in the pen’.

  10. Gina says:

Ugh my comments keep disappearing and I don’t know why.

But anyway, I hope him getting the call, if he does, over Niese has nothing to do with the righty lefty thing. Since anyone with the internet can look up the marlins numbers and see they’ve been much worse against lefty.

    • dwright012 says:

May have to do with putting Niese in a very tough spot… Everyone knows who he is now.. he was the guy not traded for alot of differnet players that could of plugged some holes.. and now you’re asking him to start against the team you’re chasing..

They may very well just want to avoid that circus

    • Steviefan84 says:

Some of my comments don’t appear and I really don’t say anything half as bad as I’ve seen from other posters that call others names. It seems everytime I post more than 2 paragraphs, it doesn’t appear. Oh well.

      • Gina says:

I don’t even think you have to say anything bad, there are just random words/names that trigger it. Like ch*e*e*se and Gr*i*f*f*ey Jr. It’s odd.

  11. Both Duaner Sanchez and Scott Schoeneweis cleared waivers.

  12. Gasface77 says:

Any news on the Giusseppe Franco interview. I saw him interviewed on SNY last night and it was hysterical!!! Beningo was loving it.

  13. since1964 says:

All we are saying is give Niese a chance

    • therealsince86 says:

He’s 21 he will get plenty of chances. Just no need for that to be against the Marlins in a very important series.

      • since1964 says:

Sorry, you are correct. I just liked the line, has a nice ring to it. As a matter of fact, it’s been stuck in my head for about fifteen minutes now.

    • BITHED420 says:

      since 1964 nice beatles reference
