News: Stokes to Start Saturday for Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 7, 2008 3:46 pm

The Mets have announced that Brian Stokes will be called up from Triple-A New Orleans to start for the Mets on Saturday.

This will be his first start for the Mets, who acquired Stokes in an off-season trade in exchange for cash.

…nothing against stokes, but i am a little disappointed, in that i had hoped that Jon Niese would get the call

In 22 starts in Triple-A this season, the 28–year-old Stokes is 10–8 with a 4.41 ERA.

    Why?

    • WozzyBear says:

After seeing what the kids contributed toay (Evans and Murphy), you’d think giving another kid, Niese, a shot would make sense.

      Ugggh.

      • Tidewater says:

Because two kids having some success on one given day means all kids will likely do well?

Beltran did well today. We should give all outfielders with moles by their ears a shot.

      • shytownmet says:

lets keep in mind WHO we are facing this wknd….we dont need a lefty in there right now w/ 0 experience… its a percentages play. no reason to be angry…. let it ride out…

then you (everyone) can be the guy that said “TOLD YOU SO” afterwards. hope its not the case, but thats how everyone’s been.

  2. GravediggerHebner says:

    I’m Stoked?

  3. backinbusiness says:

SWEET, I’ve been waiting to break out my Stokes jersey.
    ???

  4. mrose says:

    what are his stats?

  5. Nails says:

What did Claudio Vargas ever do to Minaya?

Does anyone know if Vargas were to come up and be sent down again, would he be exposed to waivers again? If yes, then I can understand this move. Otherwise … I don’t know.

    • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

i read that vargas had some sort of arm trouble after his last start. he’s not gonna miss any time, but the thinking seems to be that vargas is too risky becuase he might not be able to last too long, or something.

    • DjDeF says:

The main reason Niese is not being used is he is lefty and the marlins are a righty dominated line-up this could probably be considered true for the main reason Vargas wasn’t chosen

      • therealsince86 says:

You are thinking of the wrong Vargas. Claudio is RH.

        • ravi3 says:

I’m guessing he meant Niese, as he is the subject of the rest of the post.

As for Vargas, he was lifted early out of his most recent start. I originally thought that was due to him being the for Saturday, but obviously it could have been injury related as well.

        • DjDeF says:

I totally screwed that up I was going to make the point. Niese is not being pitched because he is lefty, Vargas was the word for some time in the past few days but word got out that he was grabbing at his arm in his last start. Haven’t heard anything official though

      • The Marlins hit better against righties than they do against lefties. We had this discussion in a post the other day.

Niese should be pitching. Stokes is gonna a get bombed. Not that I hope for it, but it seems like Brandon Knight all over again.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed and root, but I really think Niese has earned the shot at it.

      • Gina says:

The Marlins are much worse against left handed pitching than right handed this year. I think their OPS is like .100 points lower.

    • RodKanehl says:

He would have to be DFAd again.

  6. npanzeca says:

Just the guy i want in a game vs a division rival (eyes rolling)

  7. The Stork says:

    why?

  8. ksuth says:

    Who’s pitching Sunday?

  9. adenzeno says:

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! on the decision makers- GO STOKES!!

  10. chaseh says:

They must have picked a name out of a hat or something.

  11. LL says:

wtf….Stokes? why not Vargas? How about Niese? I understand not wanting to bring Niese up just to send him back down…but I’d bring him up anyway. We need wins!!!!

  12. lewchr says:

Vargas would be exposed to waivers if he were to be sent back down.

    • egnirc says:

Isn’t it once you clear waivers in a season your free and clear to be moved up and down?

  13. dwright012 says:

I honestly think its cause Niese is so hyped right now… they dont want him in a big game a week after he wasnt traded for much needed help

    just my 2 cents

    • Blue_n_Orange says:

I totally agree. I also think this team has a bad habit of rushing its prospects to the major league level and watching their value (and confidence) suffer as a result. I’m happy with what the young guys up now with the team are doing, but it doesn’t mean that everyone called up will be as good.

It’s not even so much about the value of our prospects as it is about their perceived value. It doesn’t always matter whether they succeed at the major league level. When trading prospects, a young player lighting it up in AA or AAA will usually net more than a highly regarded prospect that struggled when called up by his team and then made available via trade in the offseason. The term “once highly touted prospect” is a hard bell to un-ring. The things we could have got for Lastings Milledge…Oh well. Good luck Stokes and Go Mets!!

  14. dave27 says:

    I really don’t understand everyone’s reactions here.

Whoever starts is going to be sent right back down - and through waivers. So while this is a big game, it’s also something of a sacrificial lamb.

Bringing up Niese doesn’t make alot of sense, other than to appease everyone who is intrigued with him now that he is an untouchable prospect. Let him keep developing - throwing him into a critical divisional game is not the best idea for that.

As for Vargas, I would hope the Mets are more afraid of exposing him to waivers at this point with so many teams looking for help, and he’s a guy thye will want around when rosters expand.

In any case, it’s a spot start. It’s really not worth getting too worked up over…there’s no right or wrong call here. I don’t love the matchup because from what i’ve heard about him he’s a fastball pitcher and the Marlins do nothing but sit on fastballs…but hopefully a new look works out for us.

    • MealTicket says:

      Valid points, all.

      • Tidewater says:

Not all would go through waivers. Neise wouldn’t. Does Stokes have options left?

        • therealsince86 says:

Does it matter if Stokes does? That is why they are filling the last spot in the pen with guys like Rudy Lugo. No one would claim them any way.

        • Tidewater says:

I’m just responding to “valid points, all” because they are not all valid points.

        • ravi3 says:

I think they are valid points. Sticking Niese in that situation can do more harm then good. To ask a young kid who has made all of 2 starts in AA to start against a division rival in a tight race, at home in front of 50,000 people generally is a recepe for trouble, especially since it is for one start. If Niese had been up earlier in the year and had a few starts under his belt, then maybe.

        • dave27 says:

My point about Niese had nothing to do with waivers…and I think it is valid. Are you too young to remember Buddy tossing Julio Valera out for a critical 1990 game against the Pirates? You don’t take a kid from AA and throw him into his first-ever ML start.

Stokes pobably has no options left…and they probably don’t care if they lose him.

Also, as far as I know, Stokes is on the 40-man and Niese and Vargas are not…a fact people constantly ignore around here.

        • therealsince86 says:

          He’s not.

        • Nate W. says:

Stokes would have to clear waivers, but the Mets have no reason to worry that he wouldnt… no one claimed him in March when every team was looking for more pitching.

Niese is not yet on his option years, so calling him up for this one start and optioning him to the minors would waste a whole option year for one start. That is likely why they are not calling him up right now.

He could be called up in Sept and stay with the Mets while not using up an option year.

        • Tidewater says:

          This is what was written:

“Whoever starts is going to be sent right back down - and through waivers. So while this is a big game, it’s also something of a sacrificial lamb.”

Not everyone would have to go through waivers, ergo, that is not a valid point.

Reinforcing the validity of other points does not increase the validity of the invalid point.

        • jws366 says:

I just want to state that for the record, John Niese has had 2 starts in AAA not AA this year. In those two starts he is 2-0 with 3 ER in 13 IP (2.08 ERA). Prior to being called up to AAA, he had 22 starts with 2 CG, one of which was a CG shutout. His record was a lame 6-7 due to his having the Johan Santana Syndrome - his ERA however was 3.04 during his stay at AA this year. He’s also (only) 21 years old and is having his first notable year considering he had a 3.96 ERA when he was 19 between A and A+ ball. Then when he was 20 he put up an 11-7 record with a 4.29 ERA. You can’t just throw the kid into the fire when he hasn’t even finished his first GOOD season yet.

  15. SheaVendor says:

Can’t you people just root for your team?? What a bunch of whiney babies some fans are!!

    LETS GO METS!!!

  16. maybealittlemoredelgado says:

im a little disappointed, because im probably going to shea on saturday. whatever.

  17. MetsFan1989 says:

stokes can throw pretty hard. if i recall 96 97 in the spring trainging games. need an arm like that in the pen

    • cval says:

He doesn’t throw 96. He also got ripped every time he pitched on TV in the spring, for whatever that is worth.

  18. maybealittlemoredelgado says:

    phillies lose 3-0

  19. DavidDog says:

i dont think they’re afraid to throw niese into a big spot, in fact, i think they will sometime this year. It’s just that, as the poster above mentions, this means they envision it as a spot start for a guy who will be going right back down (which would imply they feel pretty good about maine). also, i guess stokes is getting rewarded for having been pretty good the last 4 starts… and he does have some big league experience, although i will spare you his numbers from last year in TB, prety brutal, probably WILL NOT stay on as a reinforcement for the ‘pen…

  20. Tidewater says:

    Seems like an odd choice.

  21. therealsince86 says:

It would have been Vargas but he got injured. They wanted someone who could pitch from the pen after the start so they did not have to make another move in between the start and Maine being called up.
Makes perfect sense. He will take Lugo’s spot and stay for another week and be sent down.

  22. 4eyeJoe says:

well Stokes it is……..please do not get bombed and go at least 7 innings.

the marlins really struggle against left hand pitchers especially Han-Ram and Dan Uggla. would have made a lot of sense to bring up Niese.

  23. J0eSmiTh says:

will niese get the spot start Monday v Pirates??

  24. Danny says:

I’d prefer to start Allison Stokke.

  25. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

i think the only reason that niese was not called up was cuz of the righty dominant marlins lineup

yet what befuddles me is that they are batting .246 against lefties, so why not.

and third, i think vargas had arm troubles, so he couldnt pitch like beyond the 5th inning,

as for stokes, look for him to sling it in mid to high 90’s, but if you get 5 or 6 innings, 2-4 runs, just be glad.

  26. therealsince86 says:

Guys I still think the decision was easy.
    A) Bring up Stokes send Lugo down.
    Send Stokes down for Maine.

    B) Bring up Niese for Lugo
    Send down Niese
    Bring up BP guy
Send down bullpen guy for Maine

  27. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

the thing is you just wasted an option on niese, second, well, what if niese bombs, third, i need orange soda.

    • therealsince86 says:

Well you have not wasted an option but you would have started his option clock. It’s based on years and not numbers. Now if they intend on starting him sometime this month then it does not matter but they can keep him for September and call him up when roster’s expand.

What does matter is if we called up a veteran BP guy to replace Niese as then he would be exposed to waivers.

      • Nate W. says:

actually, calling him up doesnt waste options, its the sending him back down.

If they call him up in Sept and he stays on the roster through the end of the season it will not use an option year.

If they call him up now for 1 game and send him back down it will use an option year.

Next year will be an option year for Niese either way so calling him up in Sept and optioning him down next spring is the smart business move. It means they can keep him in the minors three more years if need be…

  28. iamatwork says:

Some fella named Ruth was once traded for cash.

  29. dontstopbelieving says:

What makes the decision a bit more puzzling, if the right-heavy marlins lineup was the reason, is that Niese’s numbers against righties and lefties are almost identical — combining his AA and AAA numbers this year, his BAA for both righties and lefties is identical: .245. His WHIP against righties is actually slightly better than against lefties. So it’s not like he’s a Schoeneweis or a Heilman — he can pitch to both sides.

I’m not gonna get all worked up because it’s just one start, but if the righty/lefty distinction is the reason, it doesn’t seem like a good one.

    • therealsince86 says:

Again, I don’t think it was that at all. It was that they don’t want him in the pen after the start and would have to make a serparate move to bring someone else until Maine was back. This way it’s one move.

  30. mex84 says:

More pressure on Ollie to win friday. Although, Stokes does have ok numbers in AAA. Crappy ERA, but nice HR rate and decent amount of K’s. Maybe looking at a line of 6ip 4er for Saturday. Mets are gonna need to put up some runs!

    • Nate W. says:

Not that I think Stokes is all that good, but his AAA numbers are a little skewed because when he has a bad start he really gives up a bunch of runs. Then he throws two 7 IP shutout games and is 2-1 with a 5.50 ERA in 3 games.

  31. the Straw says:

what happened to gettin FIGGY with it?

  32. matlack says:

    Get Bradford or Giles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  33. Nate W. says:

    Phillies aquire Scott Eyre
    Rays aquire Chad Bradford.

with the way the Mets pen has been lately how did they not claim Eyre?

    • mex84 says:

I guess other teams are more hard up in the pen then us? Is that possible?

      • Gina says:

We could have claimed him before the Phillies though as far as I know. But Danny is right, he’s a loogy only and has been lit up recently.

    • Danny says:

He kind of sucks, and he’s another specialist.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

Omar is sleeping again…..couldve had a reliever in Eyre or Bradford. I know that AL teams have first claim on Bradford but all they gave up was a player to be named later. Omar probably couldve grabbed him before the deadline. I see Bradford hasnt allowed a run in 15 IP in the playoffs spanning his whole career.

  34. Knuckles99 says:

Why aren’t we using Luggo? He is better than Eyre.

    Can Chad Pennington pitch?

    • Gina says:

I would pay to see that. I bet he’d put the radar guns to sleep.

    • Nate W. says:

He blew out his shoulder throwing a football and you want him to try pitching. I hope he learns to write left handed…

  35. ugbmets21 says:

    HERE IS THE REASON:

    1. THE BULLPEN IS NOT STRONG SO, COULD YOU IMAGINE HOW NIESE WILL TURN OUT AFTER A HARD LOSS?

  36. Giuseppe Franco our next GM says:

Where is victor Zambrano when u need him

  37. 911nafstem says:

Great, another bum. Start Niese for gods sake.

  38. ilovenysports03 says:

I am with the ones who want to see Niese but not in this game against this team. The Marlins are just the type of team to mop the floor with him or Stokes for that matter. They swing at everything, they never give up, and most of um have seen Niese once or twice since they are like 12 years old. If one of these guys is going to be thrown to the wolves it might as well be a guy who’s psyche they don’t care about. If Niese was to get HAMMERED he might get discouraged but if Stokes gets cracked eh…its happened before no big deal. The other thing to consider here is that Niese is not going to be here to make a start and then sit waiting for another turn to pitch. If Stokes performs well he can be used in the pen something the Mets desperately need right now. If Niese pitches its to start and thats it. No reason to take your future supposed lefty ace and have him sit in the pen waiting for a long relief appearance. I agree with the move and lets hope Stokes gets us a win. HOPE.

  39. Pork Chop says:

Brian Stokes….come on….can anybody say Brian Lawrence….the Mets infatuation with these retread veteran pitchers boggles my mind….why is Brian Stokes going to give a better outing tha Niese….or any other young pitcher for that matter? What is his career era? Over 5 I believe, perhaps even over 6….he was brutal on Tampa when they had no pitchers….I would rather see a young pitcher have a bad game, rather than a piece of garbage veteran like this.
An on another note….why wasn’t Eddie Kunz given the chance to close today’s game? Didn’t Manual say that he would get the chance to close? Sorry, I don’t get it…Scott Schoenweis?? Why? Because he got a save the other night, by giving up a bullet to center field? Please….this veteran nonsense with the pitching staff has got to stop.

  40. Wright88 says:

I don’t know where to put this or if its been posted yet, but Show and Duaner cleared waivers and Bradford is going to the Rays.

  41. gipper82475 says:

Only one word sums up this move:

    Meh.

  42. meatloaf says:

Off topic but I live in South Jersey and have never taken public transportation to Shea. Any help with how to get there from Penn Station?

  43. meatloaf says:

Thanks I just saw it on mets.com and was told by a buddy to go to Penn Station and follow all the dudes in Met outfits…….brilliant!

  44. MetsFanTX says:

Niese was the emotional choice, but Stokes makes more sense against the predominantly right-handed Marlins lineup.

  45. Mr. Sunshine says:

Contrary to the garbage I read by you so called fans I am most pleased with the job both Jerry and Omar have done with this ball club. We are only 2 games out of first place even after going through a modest dry spell. I don’t believe you realize just how brilliant our bullpen is. The home run that tied today’s game was obviously a wind blown fly ball that scraped the back side of the fence on the way down. It was a valiant performance by all our pitchers and the game was won by the best 3rd baseman in all of baseball. I feel blessed to be a Mets fan.

  46. Elastic says:

I have watched Stokes pitch in New Orleans. This will be one ugly game on Saturday.
