What does the bullpen have against Santana?

    • egnirc says:

      Dumb theory:

Seems like maybe the Front Office told them to blow games so that he doesn”t vest any win related performance bonuses.

    • theperfectgame says:

He pays more in taxes than they make in salary?

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

I like the fact DW came through, but honestly, was that really necessary? As Jova1931 said, “What does the bullpen have against Santana?” Poor guy!

      • Xavier22 says:

That’s the 6th game the bullpen has blown for Santana in the 23 games he’s pitched for the Mets.

    • milo says:

Have any starters thrown more than 115 pitches in a game thi s year? Every game Santana comes out with 100 pitches and then the bullpen blows it. Can’t they sometimes stretch it out to 120 pitches?

      • danlx13 says:

I remember when jerry manual was named manager and during his press conference he said that one thing he wanted to do was let his pitchers go deeper…he said he felt they could throw 120 pitches

    • Steve in DC says:

“Santana, just 9-7 in his first season with the Mets, left with a 3-1 lead in the eighth. It was the sixth time in 24 starts this season that the bullpen cost him a potential win, and in five of those the collapse came in the ninth inning. He has eight no-decisions, and in seven of those allowed two runs or fewer.”

Awful. He may have to pitch a complete game every. time. out.

  2. Ryn05 says:

    We’re now 28-30 against teams under .500!

    Time to party.

    • Bucknerfan says:

Party til the next game that the bullpen blows up in. OMAR MUST GO!

    • theperfectgame says:

It’s a real shame if you can’t enjoy the wins…

      • Ryn05 says:

I was enjoying it until the 9th inning.

        • theperfectgame says:

What, do you have Santana on your fantasy team or something? Wright hit a walkoff homer in the 9th inning. You didn’t enjoy that?

        • Ryn05 says:

          I actually do.

I enjoyed the walk-off, but I’m more worried about the bullpen with 7 weeks to go.

I like to see Santana get his dues, if for no other reason to stop the inevitable “Santana was a huge disappointment” articles that are sure to flow off the presses once the season is over from moronic sports writers.

        • slangon says:

you know how normally, when a huge contract is signed and the player doesn’t live up to expectations, like barry zito, lets say? the giants would be saying to themselves, “Damn, we just payed this dude $1,000,000,000 and he really sucks.”

Do you think johan is doing the same thing, only opposite?

        • m00kie says:

he’s on my team too, and yes I”m pissed for not getting the win ;)

also happy the mets won and that outweighs other concerns at this point.

        • davenappy says:

Hes on my fantasy team also, and I was annoyed as hell, but at this point in this season I was not terribly surprised that Johan did not get the win. this bullpen is killing us. I hope the Mets at least tried to put a claim in on Chad Bradford today.

  3. Ryn05 says:

    In other news,

“Here is a summary bit of information about that data, with Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) in parentheses. ”

“The best defensive team thus far has been the Phillies (+34), and they are above average at every position, which is impressive. The Phils division lead can be summed up in this, as the Mets (-12) and the Marlins (-20) are well behind them. “.

  4. bigvito22 says:

This is so bittersweet, it really is.

I’m ecstatic the offense bounced back and I’m thrilled for D-Wright…but UGH this bullpen really puts a damper on any hope.

I think we should clone Johan Santana 10 times over and we’ll be set. Santana could get the win every game!

    • pezao says:

Of course Johan would get every win if he was cloned 10 times. He’d also get every loss, every K, every IP…

  5. metsdude13 says:

The fans on this blog really don’t deserve this win.

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

And why not? They are stating the obvious…I know a win is a win…but honestly, the inconsistency of this bullpen really has to make you think about the race to the division title and the playoffs!

      • metsdude13 says:

So worry about that. But if you’re not going to be happy with a win, what’s the point of watching the game?

It’s August. Sanchez has a dead arm. Wagner’s hurt.

This bullpen has plenty of solid arms – it was unhittable just a few weeks ago. It’s going through a bad stretch. Stop overreacting.

        • Ryn05 says:

We watch with the hopes to catch a glimpse of a team that’s playing good baseball.

Little things, like getting Reyes home with 1 out from 3rd. Or maybe not blowing a save in the 9th to a AAAA player, getting a bunt down to move a runner over in the 9th.

          The little things.

        • metsdude13 says:

          Nick Evans having 2 RBI?

Dan Murphy going 2 for 4?

Murphy and Cancel perfectly executing a hit and run?

Johan pitching another 7 solid innings?

          The team winning?

        • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Agreed Ryn05. And it is what got the Mets close to the World Series in 06. They are below average…and yes, I am glad they won…but honestly, they are lacking good arms.

    • Tidewater says:

      You’re on this blog.

  6. Metsfan309 says:

    They won.
it doesnt matter how they did it. Now i just want them to do the same against the division.

    • Gina says:

Meh, I can understand what you’re saying but it’s hard to gain confidence in this team’s chances to make the post season when they can’t even hold leads against one of the worst offensive teams in baseball.

      • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Good point Gina. The dramatic home run shouldn’t have occurred.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

But what about their record against the better teams in baseball? Pretty good right?

      • gameball says:

True — there are wins and there are wins. Taking two out of three from SD is fine, but you would like to do it with less of a struggle.

I’ll be a bit more excited if we can take 2 of 3 this weekend.

  7. CitizenSnips says:

While it’s great to see David slowly emerging from his slump I feel bad for Santana who is pitching amazing yet getting little results. Guess that means no Cy Young this year.

    • Tidewater says:

I guess Brandon Webb means no Cy Young this year. But you know what the Cy Young is? A sports-writer award. Nobody on the ‘86 team won Cy Young, MVP, ROY, Fireman of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, etc.

Awards are nice. Like my cousin Gladys. She’s, you know, nice.

  8. Jova1931 says:

Did you hear that stat? The Mets have blown 6 potential Santana wins in 23 starts, while the Twins bullpen blew 6 potential wins in 100 starts for Santana. That is incredible.

  9. Danny says:

Amazing by David. That was a good slide even.

Just a great piece of hitting and we needed that in the WORST way.

  10. stillin1st says:

why cant Kunz just get a chance to close the game? Does every single other releiver get a chance to blow a game before he gets a shot?

    • Gina says:

Probably because they’re waiting for him to settle in. He hasn’t really been lights out in the 2 innings he’s pitched.

    • I’m with you. He’s got the mentality and gives up few home runs (yesterday not included) due to the devastating sinker.

      • giuseppe franco_procede says:

I know this is far ahead…but K-Rod? I know he is going to cost a lot…and I know Wagner will refuse to be the set-up man. What do the Mets do? Buy him out? Trade him a team not listed on the no-trade clause? What to do about this damn bullpen.

        • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

k rod is a bad idea, way too many miles on the odometer

        • Gina says:

The problem is K-rod isn’t going to solve our bullpen problems, he’ll just supplant Wagner, we’ll still have the same problems we have now when Wagner’s available.

There’s also the fact the Angels are going to use the hell out of his arm before the end of the season. Who knows what shape it will be in.

        • therealsince86 says:

He’s pitched about the same amount of innings as Wagner and less than Homerun Heilman.

        • Nails says:

But he’ll cost 15 million…too much for a guy with a funky delivery.

        • Gina says:

I’m pretty sure he’s altered his delivery.

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

when he proves he can pitch the 8th, then i will let him close

    • Tidewater says:

He gave up a dinger last night, too.

      • Mr. Bananagrabber says:

Did you hear Cohen’s stat last night – that Kunz hadn’t given up a HR since his freshman year? That’s bananas.

And then not more than like 5 pitches later he does.

  11. MetfaninFL says:

So in the end there was complaining, there was moaning, there was the gnashing of teeth but we still took 2 of 3 against one of the easy teams on our schedule. The “unclutch” golden boy hit the big HR. The “overrated” CF had a big day. Our stopper Starting pitcher did his job. Except for the bullpen it was pretty much a big “shut the hell up” to all the critics on Metsblog.

    • Gina says:

Yeah. How dare they look at our team objectively.

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

when it comes to calling Dwright “unclutch” …you are not being objective, but just plain silly…please check his career numbers – late close/RISP/RISP with two outs….then you will see how wrong people are here about him

        • Tidewater says:

Calling him clutch or unclutch is silly. There’s almost no evidence to suggest that people are better or worse in clutch situations.

Yesterday he stunk up the joint. Today he looked like the Wright we love. Let’s count on more days like today, and fewer like yesterday.

        • Gina says:

When did I, or anyone else in this thread not getting excited about the win, say anything about clutch or unclutch.

    • Two-By-Four says:

If listened to Jerry Manuel after the game and he wasn’t exactly jumping for joy. He was very frustrated and worried by the performance of the bullpen. He doesn’t have the good fortune to live in never-never land and spend his time criticizing other posts on a blog.

  12. Gina says:

I’m excited that the young guys are contributing. I hope they can keep it up.

    • Ryn05 says:

Definitely the bright spot right now.

      • Nails says:

Murphy is going to be good, but I’m seeing a little too much of Nick Evans and A. Reyes for my liking.

As long as he fills the role of Reyes and not Easley, I actually may welcome Castillo back with open arms….

Reyes might play a decent 2b, but he also might get all of our of’s killed.

        • Gina says:

Evans has hit .296 with a .370 obp since he got called up again in July. Obviously he isn’t walking very much and strikes out to much, but I’d say those are respectable numbers for a rookie.

  13. Jova1931 says:

I thought it was hilarious seeing Hairston slide to third when he should have scored.

  14. cousinrk says:

10 starts by Johan in which he’s allowed 2 runs or less and has gotten a ND or Loss. And the team is 3-7 in those starts. And in his last 7 starts he’s 2-0 with 5 ND’s and 4 of which he’s allowed 2 runs or less.

They are allergic to scoring more than 3 runs and the bullpen refuses to let him get a win. Unreal. Much needed win but they still aren’t playing well.

    • Jova1931 says:

Right on. This is Pedro circa 2005.
We need Church back in that lineup. The big picture is our pitching has been good, our bullpen hasn’t but we can minimize our bullpen woes by scoring more runs.

      • Ryn05 says:

        Pedro circa 2005?

Are you watching the same games? I’m watching a Pedro Martinez that allows 22% of his fly balls to go over the wall.

    • CitizenSnips says:

I hate that “And the team is 3-7 in those starts” stat because it makes it seem like Santana is bringing the team down when clearly its the other way around.

  15. therealsince86 says:

I can’t say much because I was in favor of a day off for Wright but to all the Wright haters out there saying he is overrated and unclutch. It’s really not fair the stance you get to have.
If he sucks then you get to go on and on and try and make people believe that you are actually insiteful but if he does well then you just get to not post and be happy about a win. Lets see all those posters saying he is unclutch, come on to this thread and say it and see what kind of a fool you look like.

    • Tidewater says:

      Waaah!!!! It’s not fair!!!! Hmmph.

    • cyclone says:

I’m happy about the win, but I still think Wright is overrated and unclutch.

There, I came back and said it.

Bravo, the Golden Boy has his first hit worth remembering this season. BFD…he’s still not the guy I want up there with the game on the line.

  16. bringbackolerud5 says:

does anyone know when going through waivers in August, does it go by league or overall worst record? As with Chad Bradford, did he go through the AL first? Thanks.

    • therealsince86 says:

It goes bottom to top in your own league first then the same in the opposing league.

  17. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

I may be mistaken but I believe I read a story a while back to this fact: That was David Wright’s first walk-off homerun in his BASEBALL career, meaning going back to high school. Congrats David its been a long time coming!

PS Johan Santana should have 18 wins right now, 18!

  18. bigvito22 says:

Dumb Theory #2: The Mets relievers are irked that Santana gets paid $137.5M to pitch every 5 days….while they get a fraction of that to pitch every day or close to it. <__>

    Shame the Rays claimed Bradford.

    • Jova1931 says:

      lol…keep the theories coming.

    • Jova1931 says:

#3 Santana receives commission from Giuseppe Franco and the Proced commercials??

      • Deadpanwalking says:

Actually, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t known anything about it.

Did you know … Guiseppe Franco received the money to start up his first LA salon with money borrowed from a childhood friend named … Mickey Rourke? Hanging out with Mickey Rourke and Gary Busey? That, my friends, is hardcore. What’s next? Ken Wahl was the best man at his wedding? Jan Michael Vincent is his kids godfather? I’d believe anything at this point.

    • Gina says:

How come they don’t hate Pedro? He’s getting paid millions to pitch every other year.

    • It really does suck that the Rays claimed Bradford, because he would have been perfect for this pen. Sinkerballer that doesn’t give up homeruns. Bingo!

I would have liked Omar to have made this happen before the deadline… all the O’s got for him was a player to be named later. We could have given better than that, because PTBNL’s hardly ever work out.

  19. maybealittlemoredelgado says:

well my one day stint of being on wright’s case has concluded.

when the bullpen implodes i tend to blame the offense more. we don’t have a closer at the moment, and we need our stars to step up. today wright did, but we need to get the BP much bigger leads.

    • Gina says:

Closer or no there’s no excuse for a bullpen to not be able to hold leads. It’s not like they’re pitching lights out until we get to the 9th. They’ve been erratic all year.

      • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

i agree with that gina, but it’s gotten to the point where we know they can’t hold leads, and the offense has to pick them up. that’s all i was saying

        • This team’s inability to hit with runners on holds just as much responsibility for the terrible losses that we have had to endure. Yes, the bullpen has been erratic, and needs to improve, but even if and when it does, if the Mets don’t hit with runners on, we’ll be going nowhere.

  20. MetsFan4Decades says:

Say what you want about Billy…..

And for the record TRS6, I was never in the ‘David is overated’ club.

Woo-Hoo! We Won! We Won !!

    • therealsince86 says:

Did I mention you MF4D? If I did I did not mean to as it was to many many posters.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

No, didn’t mean to imply you did. Just wanted to make it clear, I for one, am VERY happy DWright is our 3rd baseman….

  21. AngryFan says:

Thsi team has so many problems and flaws and so little immediate future, it is very hard to get excited about bearly beating a team they should’ve busted up HANDILY.

Will anyone here really be suprised if the Fish come in and slap them around?

Individual wins are meaningless for this team. Throw together a few good weeks then we can maybe get excited.

    • kevinz says:

Why aren’t you complaining at BeerLeaguer’s instead? Where your Phillies team is currently down 3-0.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I understand your frustration, being a life long Met fan myself…
but dude, are you ever happy? Or are you truly ‘Angry Fan’???

      • kevinz says:

Yes, he is truly an “angry fan”. But it should be noted that he is an “angry fan” of the Phillies.

        • therealsince86 says:

Eh, he’s just another one of those “realist” that get to pick every negative and never look at the positive. Then like I said they win either way. We lose and they can act like 4 year olds and say I told you so, we win then they get to be happy. They just get off on bringing down their own team so that way if they lose it won’t hurt as bad.

        • AngryFan says:

          TRS86-

          What “positives” are there exactly?

A team supposed to go to the series instead is in a life and death race just to stay out of 3rd.

Strike up the band, pop the bubbly!

        • MealTicket says:

You’re exactly right, thereal. Very insightful comment.

        • BillyDeeWilliams says:

AngryFan keeps mentioning third place as if the mets aren’t in the hunt for first. As if they weren’t there recently. Keep justifying your miserable demeanor by talking about third place when the team is only 2 out of first.

    • kevinz says:

      “so little immediate future”???

Huh? Is being in a pennant race not worthy of being categorized as “immediate future? Are Wright, Reyes, and Santana mere bluechip prospects for the long haul down the future?

“Will anyone here really be suprised if the Fish come in and slap them around?”

Maybe. Maybe not. At least they’re beating up on the Phillies right now! Which is the team you root for, I believe.

“Individual wins are meaningless for this team. Throw together a few good weeks then we can maybe get excited.”

Did you forget that this team just won 10 games in a row not too long ago?

      • AngryFan says:

How have they been before that flukish streak, and since then?

        Just askin’

And yes, I say “little immediate future” since I have zero faith in this core to ever get the job done.

I have 3 years of results on my side of the argument, you have….homerism?

        • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

you must be furious that it’s a nice day outside today, because eventually it will be winter.

        • AngryFan says:

No way dude. Then we have football ;)

        • mr.gee21 says:

Three years? They were one swing away from the World Series in 2006. One game away from the post-season last year.

I know we are paying a lot of money for the games, but still, those are the kind of results that most teams dream of.

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

      you still suck

    • GravediggerHebner says:

AngryFan, unfortunately for your theory, a few good weeks will simply be comprised of a bunch of meaningless individual wins.

  22. cousinrk says:

CitizenSnips, How is saying the team is 3-7 in 10 starts in which he’s allowed 2 runs or less laying blame at Johans feet? Its just showing that they’ve blown so many opportunities in starts by their ace to win ballgames because of various reasons. You can’t blame him its been an equal effort on the part of the bullpen and offense

  23. bigchart333 says:

why is Jerry Manuel doing his Willie Randolph impression and “goin with my guys and my vets” by parading these guys who aren’t closers out there when we need a closer?

I’ll be the first to admit that Kunz doesnt have ANY experience on the big league level, but we all know he’s a CLOSER, he has that mentality so to speak. GIVE HIM THE CHANCE.
OR, keep joe smith in, the guy threw 4 friggin pitches

I mean, it’s a basic human quality. If what you’re doing isnt working or isnt helping, you change it and do something else. These guys are teh guys blowing it out there, GIVE teh kids some life..i mean jeez, up until wright’s HR, all of our runs were produced by Evans and the Murph. I’m not saying “ride the kids and thats the only way to win” but come on already. If these guys could close, they would’ve already in their MLB careers. NAME KUNZ THE CLOSER. If he blows it, fine…but when it’s proven others cant, go to the unknown

  24. johnrockersucks says:

The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network reports that the Orioles have traded Chad Bradford to the Rays for a player to be named later.

Wheres omar with our bullpen help?

    • bigchart333 says:

he was claimed off waivers from the rays, and i believe it goes bottom to top in ur own league first, then to the next league. I’m sure omar would have at least put in a claim had we had the chance

    • therealsince86 says:

LOL, do you think Omar could have talked the Rays into not selecting Bradfor?

    • Gina says:

We have to have someone to trade for before we can start looking at deals. And we have to have someone to trade.

      • therealsince86 says:

Eh if Bradford could have made it through waivers I am sure we could have gotten him. There will be others like him in the next couple of weeks.

        • Gina says:

I agree about Bradford, I’m talking about bullpen help in general. Most of the, decent, arms available before the deadline had pretty high prices.

      • Come on Gina, we didn’t have someone better than a PTBNL before the deadline? PTBNL’s almost never work out – they’re generally marginal prospects. We could have given them something better than that. I would have given Carp even. Certainly that’s better than a PTBNL.

  25. Jova1931 says:

    Dick Pole>Balsely

  26. MealTicket says:

I do wish the Mets had picked up ChadBrad, though. Kinda sucks that they didn’t.

  27. zigner says:

Is there an over/under on the amount of times Johan says “job” in his post game interviews? If the line is 3, I bet the house on over!

  28. MetsFan4Decades says:

Listening to Johan’s post game interview.
    Kudos to him.
He’s happy with his performance, they won – which is the important thing, he knows he only has 9 wins but it is what it is. He doesn’t blame anyone, doesn’t brood over it, just tries to maintain consistency and help his team win a ball game.

Way to step up to the plate, Johan. Hopefully, we can get you a few more wins before this season is over….

  29. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Humm……Stokes starting Saturday’s game.

  30. johnrockersucks says:

    in other news…brett favre

  31. BigPelf4prez says:

scott eyre to the phils. OMAR IS ASLEEP

  32. Koko says:

Jerry Manuel and Scott Show = Lucky Bastards

  33. hi5wright says:

I’m so excited to listen to Mad Dog kill Santana for only going 7+

  34. Gina says:

I wonder if Santana is wishing he had never been traded.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I like what he says to the media – ‘we got the win, that’s what counts’, but…
he’s only human. I’m sure he’s thinking about all those blown saves. And who can blame him?

      • Gina says:

Not just the wins, but the state of the team itself. He said he wanted to go somewhere to win but at this point the Twins probably have a better chance of making the post-season than we do. Or about an even chance.

im also pretty sure he’s not complaining of his bi-wekly check

but no, im pretty sure it bothers us more than him, that’s really a non-issue (Hamels could say the same), the true issue is how the mets are gonna get through two wagner-less weeks. offense better heat up… good signs from beltran and wright though, of course delgado (not surprising, streak hitter) and tatis are cooling. but today just showed how youth can invigorate the team and the fans… when do we call up Carp and Niese?

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

i cant think of 137, 000, 000 reasons why he isnt

  35. Chris Russo is infuriating.

  36. sbenzkofer says:

I’m confused… did Manuel say blown save by committee or bullpen by committee when Wagner went on the DL?

  37. I really don’t like sending Reyes up there to bunt with Chavez on in the 9th. He’s not a great bunter and you take the bat out of his hand when he could put one in the gap and win the game right there. It worked out eventually, but I don’t like that move.

Anyone else have thoughts on it?

    • npanzeca says:

      Not my favorite play.

    • johnrockersucks says:

agreed, but u havta expect reyes to be able to get that bunt down theres no reason he shouldve popped out like that

    • therealsince86 says:

Terrible play, then you let Hideous Reyes hit.

      • Hideous? The dude’s hitting .305 and on base at a .368 clip, slugging .496. What’s hideous? He;’s got great gap power, let him hit a double and Chavez scores.

        No?

        • mr.gee21 says:

I am pretty sure he was talking about A. Reyes, whose first name kind of rhymes with “hideous.”

    • Nails says:

He’s a better bunter than you give him credit for, today notwithstanding, but I do agree with you that bunting Chavez over for A. Reyes is just silly. I have much more faith in Jose to get an extra-base hit than I do for Argenis to get a single. I know the stats don’t back it up, but in a big spot, I just do.

  38. ImissPiazza says:

    The mets won.

    Does anybody realize it?

    don’t think so.

  39. milhouse says:

This win was pure Giuseppe Karma

  40. Knuckles99 says:

    Fish beat the Phils.

  41. maybealittlemoredelgado says:

    philthies lose.

    • Bogar says:

      Yeah, but Marlins win.

      • mr.gee21 says:

Well, can’t have it both ways on that one. Might as well root against the guys in first place, and then take care of the Fish when we see them next.

  42. UpstateDave says:

Wow, Shoeinweis owes Wright a steak dinner after that one…

So, it looks like we’ve crossed Heilman and Shoeinweis off the “spot closer” list. Who’s next? If everything goes according to plan, every member of the bullpen will blow a ninth-inning lead, at which poing Wagner can return from the DL.

  43. LeftCoastMetsFan says:

Well, it was really GREAT to beat Heath Bell. I really cant stand that guy.

  44. SinceSterns says:

Thank you Nick Evans for making a spectacular play on a poorly thrown ball by Jose to turn the DP with the bases juiced. I was at the game so I couldn’t tell whether the ump made the right call or not, i.e., whether Evans’ foot came off the bag, but he made an outstanding stretching scoop on the ball. Nice play by Argenis as well. Black and I think the pitching coach were tossed in between innings shortly thereafter, though it looked there was an argument over the double switch.

  45. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

i mean he has 10 starts, think of it, dont you think that with a mediocre bullpen, with the 6 wins, with the 15 total wins, with the strikeouts, with the top 5 in era, with 10 starts to go, he could have been well over 20 wins, but even so, he still has a shot to get 15 wins maybe even 17.

  46. Giuseppe Franco our next GM says:

U can hear from a far Willie laughing in shame

  47. mylegshurt says:

Mike & the Mad Dog = Goofus & Gallant

  48. ditas says:

A win’s a win, but no one should be happy about how the Mets won this game.

And by the way is Omar even alive? Not that these would be great pickups but in the last two days, Hernandez goes to the Rockies, and today Giles is about to be traded to the Red Sox, Eyre signed with the Phillies and Chad Bradford got traded to the Rays.

These are players that would give us depth in positions we are seriously lacking. I don’t know maybe the players didn’t get to us on the waiver wire, but come on man wake up.

And Saturday Stokes is starting instead of Niese. Stokes is a proven mediocre pitcher in the majors while Niese could give this team a shot in the arm.
