Read: Today, In the NL East
By David Pinto - Aug 8, 2008 3:07 pm

The Marlins played just finished a three-game series in Philadelphia without hitting a home run.  It’s the first time this season they failed to homer in a three-game series and also the first time since June of 2007.  Florida dropped to third in the majors in team home runs.

The Phillies acquired Scott Eyre to add another lefty to the bullpen.  Eyre owns a 7.15 ERA despite excellent strikeout, walk and home run numbers.  He’s allowed 15 hits, seven for extra bases.

Chipper Jones comes off the disabled list today.  He wants to play Friday night, but Bobby Cox may use him as a pinch hitter at first.

Emilio Bonifacio played seven games since joining the Nationals on August 1st.  He knocked out multiple hits in five of those games for a total of 12, seven for extra bases.  With Emilio in the lineup, the Nationals are 6-1 in August.

  1. I hope the Phillies lose tonight….and tomorrow….and Sunday. That should help them build up some real momentum going into the west coast swing.

    Pause not.

I don’t think you have to wish for that my friend – if you saw the travesty that I had to watch in person yesterday, it’s not very far fetched!!

      • Haha…see that? I’m glad you extended the handshake and called me friend. I’ll extend mine back, so long as you don’t pull yours back quickly and run it through your hair while saying and overly exaggerated long version of the word “syyych”.

of course not – may have to borrow your screen name because it’s seriously looking that way

        • no way. this is probably going to be a fight to the bitter end. makes it all the better. to quote an ex-mlb manager, “the champagne will taste that much sweeter”. you have a 1.5 game lead in the division. i wouldn’t throw in the towel just yet.

but, in the event that we do have to switch names, can i call myself phillyguyfan, to keep a little dignity?

also, i am just keeping it real with this name. christened it when the mets were at their low point. i think that was wags’ blown save in san diego.

Ok, show of hands for anyone who thought back in April that we’d be saying “this early August series against the Marlins is going to be critical for us to stay within striking distance of first place”.

At this point I’m more worried about going against the Fish than the Phillies. The Phillies seem to go through similar problems as us when it comes to their offense taking nights and even whole series off. The Fish however just have so many guys that seem to get those backbreaking hits, such as Cody Ross, against us. Their hitting though doesn’t come as much of a surprise as much as the fact that their starting pitching hasn’t slumped to the extent that puts them out of the race and their BP is pretty solid as well.

Maybe their inexperienced staff starts to falter during the dog days and the final stretch, but making sure we take at least 2 of 3 this series is about as necessary as it comes for this time of year.

If the Marlins can play the toughest schedule in the majors for the 2nd half and win the division then they deserve it. I just don’t see it.

    • Cody Ross, Josh Willingham, Reynel Pinto, (insert catcher here). They all kill us. I can see Ricky Nolasco with 8IP, 3H, 2K, BB tonight.

It’s hard to maintain a bragging right w/ the lead and the way we’ve been playing – but your correct – will be a fun/painful ride through Sept!! You are absolutely allowed to tag the screen name – we have a T-ball league that’s looking pretty good down the street – lol!!

I’ve been reading this blog for quite some time now but have yet to make a comment. I feel the need now because for a while I’ve been noticing small mistypes and other mistakes in many posts. I love the work done on this blog but really wish the editorial process was kicked up a notch. This is becoming a serious place for baseball news and should be proofread accordingly. Again, I love the work here but it’s almost as sloppy as the New York Times.

It was a joke. And no I don’t need a comment in my first sentence. And yes, you can start a sentence with and.

    • stumped1 says:

actually 3 times you should have put a comma before but, but i really dont give a hoot about grammer and punctuation, as you can well see.

      • Gina says:

You don’t have to put commas before conjunctions. In the case of the first sentence he was joining and independent clause and a dependent clause, so a comma isn’t necessary.

    Crap, butchered that one.
