Health: Tatis Spiked, Castro is Sore

by Matthew Cerrone

In the second inning of yesterday’s game, Fernando Tatis was spiked in the right shin by Argenis Reyes when the two players ran in to one another while chasing a fly ball off the infield.

Though Tatis limped off the field, he finished the game.

Later, Ramon Castro left the game following the fourth inning with a sore right ankle.

He later told reporters that the ankle has been sore all week, and he does not consider it to be serious.

As Adam Rubin points out on his blog for the Daily News, it is the same ankle Castro injured on Saturday in Houston.

Castro played in just 14 games during August and September last season, and just 11 games during August and September in 2006.

ugh.

atlantasnumber1metsfan August 8, 2008 at 8:51 am

I think the Mets will be looking for another C in the offseason.

Chan Ho Parking Lot August 8, 2008 at 8:56 am

Hopefully one that will replace Schneider.

atlantasnumber1metsfan August 8, 2008 at 9:01 am

Agreed. I didn’t mean to replace Castro who is a sufficient 2 day a week player.

NY Sports Dog August 8, 2008 at 8:58 am

Everyone talks about Castro being a full time starter, but the fact is his body can’t handle it.

I’m not saying that he was in any way at fault for the play in which he was barreled into, but he has not historically shown the ability to stay injury free.

Great backup….and that is enough expectation-wise.

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 9:04 am

Someone needs to teach A. Reyes the fundamentals of 2nd base. He makes some nice plays but the routine popups are going to get somoene hurt. What is that, 5 or 6 that he has had trouble with already?

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 9:10 am

Here’s an interesting stat for you.
If Brian Schnieder had enough AB’s to qualify he would be 6th in the majors in OBP for catchers.
There just aren’t many good hitting catchers anymore.

Mets Fan on Wall St. August 8, 2008 at 9:21 am

Good point. In the NL you have Russell Martin, McCann, Sotto and then everyone else in terms of offense. Maybe Mets fans are spoiled because we’ve had Carter and Piazza and of course the juiced up Todd Hundley. Even Lo Duca in 2006 was a decent hitter.

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 9:23 am

Agreed. I think that Schnieder from all reports may call a better game than all of them. How you measure that I have no idea. I am content with Schnieder and Castro for now and then see what happens after next year when both their contracts run out.

Prismo August 8, 2008 at 9:45 am

HEY! Hundley didn’t juic…nah, I can’t even finish that sentence.

krispy644 August 8, 2008 at 9:33 am

its plain and simple to see that other Met fans do not follow baseball.

good point therealsince86! another thing was that he was hitting around .300 going into May. I think Met fans fail to realize the reason why Omar acquired Brian.

Chan Ho Parking Lot August 8, 2008 at 10:17 am

Omar acquired him for his defense and game calling. But has it really made that much of a difference? The game calling is hard to tell, but has he really made a difference in throwing out runners? I can’t think of any instances where he threw out a base stealer in a big crucial spot. Can you?

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 10:22 am

I think you are missing something. Players don’t run on him because of his percentage. For instance last year Loduca gave up 72 steals out of 94.
This year Schnieder has only given up 26 steals out of 42.
To me that says it all.

krispy644 August 8, 2008 at 11:43 am

the Mets are 4th in the NL in pitching believe it or not with a 4.08 .era. and credit defintely goes to Brian and Castro being behind the plate.

and look at the stats therealsince86 put up about opposing base stealers

last year they were 7th in the NL with a 4.26 .era

ENOUGH SAID!!

Gina August 8, 2008 at 12:21 pm

We didn’t have Johan or Pelfrey, performing at this level, last year either.

Chan Ho Parking Lot August 8, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Good point. And we also had Brian Lawrence serving up batting practice for a few starts last year as well. Heck, even I made one start!

krispy644 August 8, 2008 at 2:45 pm

notice that LoDuca was behind the plate last year where the Mets finished 7th in the NL in pitching and that was with Maine and Perez having their best years in a Mets uniform. that was about it. Pelfrey didnt pitch well, Mota was a headache, Glavine was not sharp at all, and Mets have the 5th starter question mark all of that season.

yes while Santana will upgrade any pitching staff, Heilman still has big .era, Scotty pitched better from 2007, Feliciano wasnt better compared to last year and neither was Smith compared to his first half from 2007.

the Mets are 4th in the NL in pitching with Brian and Castro behind the plate and that is with a up and down Maine and Perez, a bad Heilman, and a declining Pedro and great pitching by Pelfrey. think about that. Brian has to be given some credit.

Chan Ho Parking Lot August 8, 2008 at 10:14 am

Yeah, but he is the worst when it comes to slugging percentage. Even Jason Kendall has a higher slugging percentage, and he only has 1 home run!

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 10:23 am

Agreed, but do we really need that much slugging from our 8 hitter? Or is it more important in the NL that he clear’s the pitcher?

Chan Ho Parking Lot August 8, 2008 at 10:43 am

The inconsistency of the offense and its inability to put teams away begs for more offense from the lower end of the lineup, so 2 automatic outs from the 8 and 9 spot is an issue. Would it be an issue if this team hit like they did in 2006? No.

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 10:46 am

How many teams have a #8 hitter in the NL that has a good OPS? Besides we are scoring runs but as you said not consistantly. Think how many MORE runs we would be giving up if a guy like Loduca was catching.

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 10:54 am

To further my point, the NL average for OPS from the 8 spot is .648 Looks like he is right at NL average.

Chan Ho Parking Lot August 8, 2008 at 10:56 am

Well, LoDuca is garbage, but I get the point. I guess you can look at it either way, but I think I would personally prefer an offensive catcher (not LoDuca) than an all defense no hit guy. I would have preferred Omar to have signed Bengie Molina back in 2006 when he was a FA.

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 11:02 am

I think he got ticked that he and Hernandez were wanting such big contracts. He offered them the same deal and both stalled so he got Loduca who was big for us in 2006. He actually played defense that season and was good enough on offense to make up for the runs given up.

Still point is that A) there are not many good hitting catchers. B) There are very few that give up as few SB as Schnieder. C) Schnieder in the 8 spot is average in OPS compared to the rest of the NL.

krispy644 August 8, 2008 at 11:48 am

by the way Chan Ho Park…

where is LoDuca now? oh yea he was released by the Nats!!

Chan Ho Parking Lot August 8, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Read my above post. I said LoDuca was garbage. What does him getting released have to do with anything?

krispy644 August 8, 2008 at 11:44 am

again, you are missing the point about the reason Omar traded for him. HIS DEFENSE, NOT HIS OFFENSE!

Peter August 8, 2008 at 9:31 am

I think Castro needs to bring back the Imperial March. I haven’t heard that this season yet.

Ceetar August 8, 2008 at 6:30 pm

It’s been there. I remember thinking at one point in a game that the Mets had played Indiana Jones, the Imperial March, and the Superman Theme. big shoes to fill.

Jmiles August 8, 2008 at 10:09 am

A Reyes’s fielding really Pisses me off. He’ll make a great play then 3 stinkers.People may like him but he is a very frustrating player to watch.
Yesterday when Beltran made the catch for the 1st out in the 9th inning He was screaming “I got it” like 5 times-It’s good judgement because he knows the Mets have infielders playing the outfield and was watching out for inevitable collision that the Mets are famous for
Good move Carlos
Was that also one of the worst bunts by Jose Reyes iin the history of sac bunts?

GravediggerHebner August 8, 2008 at 10:12 am

Maybe Argenis got some peroxide in his ears ;-)

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 10:26 am

I am not a big fan of A. Reyes in general and will be glad to see Castillo get back.

krispy644 August 8, 2008 at 11:57 am

at this day and age…A.Reyes has better range than Castillo!! Castillo legs are too much of a problem. plus I heard he’s going hitless in the minors!! geesh!!

i’ll still role with Castillo because he is a vet and a career .296 hitter, but he hasnt put the ball in play like he used to this year.

Gina August 8, 2008 at 12:23 pm

The problem is Reyes’s bat is anemic, this offense really can’t afford two bats like that. I’ll gladly trade A. Reyes contract, and high out production for Castillo’s obp.

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 12:24 pm

I think I agree.

Gina August 8, 2008 at 12:31 pm

By contract I mean contact.

krispy644 August 8, 2008 at 12:00 pm

game saving diving double play yesterday? his fielding still stinks? are you paying attention to the game? you’re going to let one little outfield play judge?

the kid is still young and learning but already has made some strides in the bigs

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Did you read our post? We know he is athletic to make the super play but he does not have a clue on fundementals. One little pop up? He had about 3 last night.

mikepelfreyismyguy August 8, 2008 at 10:10 am

the thing with schneider is that even when he was injured for like a couple of days in the beginning of the season, the issue was always whether he could catch, not if he was hitting, honestly, catchers arent supposed to hit .300 with 20 home runs. the only ones with a high average are russel martin who was a third baseman, brian mccann whom i like alot, joe mauer, the 1st overall selection, yadier molina, who is a fluke, and aj pyrzenski to some extent.

Chan Ho Parking Lot August 8, 2008 at 10:20 am

Nobody is asking him to hit .300 with 20 home runs. He should at least put up an OPS above 700 for pete’s sake. .647 is horrible, and his .303 slugging percentage would make Rey Ordonez point and laugh.

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 10:24 am

Again, I don’t care about SLG from my defensive catcher batting 8th.

mikepelfreyismyguy August 8, 2008 at 11:30 am

thank u the real, you and your logic. i mean, you do not need AND SHOULDNT CARE ABOUT HOW YOU SLUG FROM THE 8 SPOT. MY GOD, and he isnt batting .198, he is batting .254, which is pretty respectable

Gina August 8, 2008 at 10:21 am

Unrelated to catchers but I wonder why we didn’t put a claim in on Brian Giles.

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 10:24 am

Good question. Unless they really believe that Evans/Murphy/Tatis can give them just as much?

Gina August 8, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Even if they do it couldn’t hurt to have a guy who’s an actually outfielder.

therealsince86 August 8, 2008 at 12:25 pm

Completely agree. I think that Winn would be a solid pickup if he goes through waivers. Hey we found Shawn Green, there is bound to be someone.

Flushing_is_Burning August 8, 2008 at 10:23 am

does the Mets have their own wing at a Hospital? if not, they should really look into that

mikepelfreyismyguy August 8, 2008 at 11:32 am

giles, no thanks. i mean we dont need an outfielder that can draw walks, hit .300 , hit some home runs, hit doubles, drive in runs, nah, i really dont think we needed that. the reason we didnt, was cuz we had to give up guys.
