News: Church in the Clear
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 8, 2008 10:49 pm

Following tonight’s game, Ryan Church told reporters that he has been cleared by doctors to begin a minor-league rehab assignment.

He will workout with the team tomorrow in NewYork, after which he will travel to St. Lucie where he will prepare to hopefully play in this coming week, though he added that there is still no specific timetable for his return.

    Awesome!

    reyes
    murphy
    wright
    delgado
    beltran
    church
    tatis
    schneider
    pitcher

    now thats a lineup!

    • rM teM says:

Why St Lucie? It’s a short subway ride to Brooklyn?

    • thingshappen says:

So I guess you mean that Murphy plays 2nd?

      That makes sense to me.

    • X-Man says:

Castillo will throw a big monket wrench to that great line-up you just posted, unforfunately. You know they will have to play him. If they put him batting second instead of Murphy, I will not watch any games.

  2. Chris the Teacher says:

    personally,

    reyes
    church
    wright
    del
    bel
    tatis
    catcher
    murphy

    • therealsince86 says:

LOL? Why? Murphy will see nothing to hit in the 8 spot.

      • Chris the Teacher says:

need a guy who can be bunted over and who can work counts abd get on base.

        • therealsince86 says:

In the 9 spot? I don’t care if the Cardinals do it, it does not make it right. The only guy on our roster I could see in that spot is Castillo because he has a decent OBP but absolutely no slugging.

Murphy needs to be put in a place he can be successful and #9 is for sure not it. You are taking at least 1 AB away from him every game.

        • JefJarrett says:

He is in the 8th spot in his example here…….

    • MizzIKE says:

Since when is Murphy a 2B?

  3. therealsince86 says:

Guys I hate to tell you but Murphy is not going to play 2nd when Church comes back. Easley and Castillo will be spliting that spot and Murphy and Tatis will be in LF.

  4. Ceetar says:

    I’ve heard this one before..

  5. krispy644 says:

good for Church. progress is in order.

  6. Two-By-Four says:

I am happy for Church and here’s hoping he can pick up from where he left off.

BTW Nady just hit another HR for the Yankees and is on fire.

  7. HarryDoyle says:

No timetable? What about a time horizon?

  8. ilovenysports03 says:

No timetable just means he will start rehab games this week and if all is well he will be up in about 2 weeks. The reason they didn’t give an exact time is due to the fact they are not sure how he’ll respond to playing on the field. They don’t want t say he’ll be back in 2 weeks and he have a relapse or he struggles and then have to start pushing things back even more. It makes sense since anything they get out of him will be great and it almost makes it like you just made a waiver deal for a bat. Here is the line up I see if he comes back along with Castillo.

Reyes, Murphy, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Church, Casto/Schneider, and Castillo, or
Reyes, Castillo, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Church, Tatis, Casto/Schneider its a nice problem to have…to many guys rather than not enough. I just can’t wait to see Church back again. He has been missed.

  9. LIMetfan74 says:

I wouldnt get my hopes up guys. I have a feeling that you will not see him play this season.

  10. Andrew says:

What? Church is on the clear?!

  11. It Works It Works says:

With Murphy and Tatis going the way they are, I say: Take your time, Ryan. Mid-September is plenty of time…

  12. Giuseppe Franco our next GM says:

This is better than putting Marlon Anderson out there

  13. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

im not surprised. i have the utmost confidence that ryan will return to form in a week. anyway, as for the second spot, i think it will be occupied by castillo when he comes back, cuz i am pretty sure you arent benching a 4 year 25 million player, otherwise he would have to be pretty dumb.

though, if he does, manuel wouldnt surprise me

    reyes

santana more time than we needed phillies, phillies, padres, etc

    ……………………………………………………………………..

i dont give him credit at all for carlos delgado. cuz apparently delgado decided not to play the first two and a half months cuz of willie, which is unacceptable, hes playing in a contract year, and you dont drink some potion to get bat speed.

john maine- honestly he wanted to go out there and he refused, LOSA

pedro \- are you kidding me. this is pedro martinez, and he refuses.

LISTEN< JERRY MANUEL LEARN TO TRUST YOUR PLAYERS, CUZ IF YOU DONT MEANING YOU WILL HOPEFULLY NOT BE THE MANAGER OF THE NEW YORK METS>

  14. KL15 says:

Great news! Get well Ryan, hope to see you back in the lineup soon.

  15. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

oh come on, hello, THE REAL RYAN CHURCH, as you said, hit .270 with 15 hr, 70 rbi’s, 40+ doubles in rfk last year

  16. grotesmask says:

My lineup for week beginning Aug. 25:

    Reyes-SS
    Beltran-CF
    Wright 3B
    Delgado 1B
    Church RF
    Murphy LF
    Tatis 2B (capable?)
    Schneider/Castro
    P

    Now, that’s some slugging power!!!

    • X-Man says:

You keep forgetting about Castillo. Castillo will throw a big monkey wrench to any “Power” Line-up you guys come up with. You know they will have to play him. I also prefer to have a “REAL” hitter in the 2nd spot like Beltran or Murphy (love Murphy in the 2-hole). If Castillo has to play, he’s no better than a 8th place hitter on this team, period.

I know there are many Castillo supporters on here but he is not the player he used to be. Right now we have much better options than him. I don’t see how you move a guy (Murphy) that’s batting .500 and sees at least 5 pitches in every AB. I would only platoon Castillo and Easley at 2nd and bat Castillo no higher than 8th. On days where Schneider and Castillo both play, that weakens the bottom order of the line-up so Manuel will have to figgure out something there.

No matter how you slice it, Castillo coming back does not allow us to put our BEST offensive line-up out there on a consistant basis.

      • grotesmask says:

Hmm…but didn’t Manuel say something to the effect that Castillo regularly starting upon his return was no guarantee?

I’ll be convinced they will play him b/c of his contract over the desire to win when I see it.

        • X-Man says:

I hope you’re right and I hope Manuel keep his word that he will go with the “Hot Hand” and not play Castillo b/c of contact considerations.

        • mikepelfreyismyguy says:

manuel is a friggin turncoat. he makes the excuse that if johan asked for the ball, he would give it to him. yeah right, it was his responsibility as the manager, not johan

do you honestly believe anything that manuel said.

luis castillo has a 4 year cotract

no one is gonna take him

the mets are going to play him

          one way or another

and i think that when healthy

          we will see

the same hitter who hit .301 last year

  17. 911nafstem says:

Ryan Church will not play another inning for the NY Mets this season.

  18. jetsmets says:

First of all….Dan Murphy is a Dave Magadan type player. No power, might hit a little bit. He will be a career bench player. The Mets will not give him an opportunity to play his natural position (3b). The Mets have turned him into a utility player (2b,lf,1b). They will never allow him to be a full time player. They will go out and sign a proven player with numbers. Not that I agree with this, but he is not a Fmart with all the hype.

I would love nothing better than to move him to 2b and leave him there for 10 years…..Saves money for Pitching (castillo should be traded and we have to eat half the contract.) However, that will not happen……

Next year outfield is Fmart , Beltran and Church GUARANTEED…take that to the bank……..Delgado will be at 1b,,,,Murphy will be a bench player along with chavez and tatis(May platoon with fmart)….

They will spend money on bullpen and starting pitching….Which I agree with…..Fix the bullpen,,,sign ollie to 4 years and 55 mill…..

Pitching staff will be santana, maine, perez, pelf, neise and pedro……..

They can sign pedro for the same money as he has made for two years….Sign ollie for an additional 6 mill a year….REup delgado for 6 mill less……Lose salary from alou, elduqu, and other scrubs……….They save a ton of money next year………

There will be no big FA next year…..Take it to the bank!!!!!!!

    • Wright88 says:

I guarantee FMart is not starting next year.

      • jetsmets says:

If you dont think he is the starting LF’er next year, you are delusional!! with a Capital “D”!!!

If that were the case, and he was not in their plans to start next year, he would have been traded for bay or ramerez., or some freakin pitching.

        GUARANTEED starting Left Fielder..case closed…

Omar will be crucified if Fmart is not the starter.. I will be bet my house that is is there next year..

Dont be so stupid..Have some commen sense before saying something stupid like that!

        • grotesmask says:

Yeah, I mean he kind of has to be unless they acquire some blockbuster OFer via free agency, or trade FMart for someone, which I don’t see happening.

They are not going to have him develop/moulder in the minors for another year.

        • Koko says:

But that doesn’t mean he is going to start the season in LF next year. His minor league numbers aren’t that good this year. He is injury prone and still only 19. Letthing him actually put up good numbers for at least half a minor league season would be wise and probably more realistic than him being the starting LF when the season opens.

If that was true, why didn’t they just call him up now? Because he ain’t ready and he won’t be ready when the season starts next year.

Reason he wasn’t traded for a Manny type? Because he still is in the Mets plans in the near future, but that doesn’t mean the start of next season.

Unless Martinez completely matures in 9 months into a dominant OF in the minors, winter ball, and spring training, just don’t see it.

If Church is healthy and they either keep Delgado or get a true 1B, they can make do with a LF combo of a group of players until Martinez is ready. And I’m sure the Mets will sign an OF either as a backup/spot starter or a permanent starter.

        • Wright88 says:

Way to spell common sense. He is only 19 and hasn’t put up great numbers, why would they bring him up? He still has to mature, if they didn’t bring up Niese because they felt he was too young why would they bring up someone who is younger and hasn’t had nearly the success Niese has. Think about it for a minute, you would bring up a 19 yr old, or 20 next year, who hasn’t dominated the minor leagues and is still considered pretty raw?

        • X-Man says:

Agree. Yes F-Mart will be in LF sometime next season, that’s for sure. But I agree with Koko, he won’t be there on Opening Day, 2009.

    • mikepelfreyismyguy says:

ok, jetsmets, YOU ARE A FRIGGIN STUPID SCRUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what is with you and these moronic and i repeat undisputably MORONIC gurantees.

OOOO, DAN MURPHY IS GONNA BE BENCH PLAYER.

SCOUTS ARE SAYING THAT DAN MURPHY HAS THE BEST PURE BAT AND HITS FOR MORE AVERGE THAN THE OVERHYPED AND OVERRATED FERNANDO MARTINEZ>

HYPE DOESNT RESULT INTO RESULTS LOSER

look at ian kennedy, he couldnt out of the third innings

      melky cabrera, he cant hit

      alex escobar, mets fans know

SO YEAH< BEFORE YOU GO AROUND SAYING THAT THIS AND THAT, BE SURE TO GET YOUR FACTS AND YOUR BRAIN ON STRAIGHT, cuz apparently something broken.

dan murphy, is the future second baseman/ left fielder, of the new york mets. ok got that turd

  19. X-Man says:

jetsmets, you like to “Guarantee” allot. There are no guarantees in this game especially when it comes to a 19-year minor leaugue player. Not you, nor me, nor Omar or the Wilpons know at this strage exactly when F-Mart will be ready to be an everday starting LF at the major league level. Granted, I believe like you that the plan is for F-Mart to play next year in LF and he does sem to be in all future plans for this team, but my best guess is that he’ll play the first month or two in the minors before being called up in 2009, but unlike you, I’m not guaranteeing a thing!

    • jetsmets says:

Another stupid comment…they need a lf’er…they did not traade him when they could have gotten manny or bay…. Put it together moron….They did not trade him bcause he is the LF’er next year….Shut the hell up and think for a change..

  20. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

wow, jetmets, you are the one who is delusional, and i agree with x
man like i usually do, cuz unlike you, he is rational. honestly, i guarantee, there are no guarantees when it comes to baseball. anyhow, i honestly dont think that fernando will be the starter. it is more likely that if he was healthy all year, hed be here now, but next year, i think you are more likely to see manny or something, he will be a september call up or an injury call up, but i can strongly say, barring injuries, that he will the starter of the new york mets come 2010. no guarantees

  21. jetsmets says:

WOW,,what a bunch of clowns you all are…..mikepelfreyismyguy,you want to call me names and blah, blah ,blah, blah….you are the biggest idiot on this board……What I am saying is Fmart IS the LF’er next year!!! If he wasnt, they would have made a big trade with him. They are saving money for the pitching staff. In case your too stupid to know, pitching and defense is what wins. That is why Murphy will NEVER be a starter…no defense!! Future 2b?? Are you an absolute moron? He is NOT a 2bman!! Scouts say he is the best pure hitter? Where, you idiot! Who says hes is the best pure hitter? Best where in Major leagues? Minor leagues? What??? Shut the hell up you stupid ignorant idiot!
You dont have a friggen clue. None of you have an ounce of sense! “SCOUTS ARE SAYING THAT DAN MURPHY HAS THE BEST PURE BAT AND HITS FOR MORE AVERGE THAN THE OVERHYPED AND OVERRATED FERNANDO MARTINEZ” What? You a–hole! I cant believe anyone would make that comment. Shut up!

Yeah, Murphy is gonna be our starting 2bman. and he is the best pure hitter….Those two comments show that you are a BONEHEADED MORON. NOw do yourself a favor and get hte hell off this site!

    • rogasm says:

Wow, you are an angry individual.

Fernando has yet to play a full season in the minors, much less put up consitent numbers. He strikes out WAY too much and isn’t getting on base enough. I would love to see the guy in LF next year, and we just may, but not when this team breaks camp. Just because he wasn’t traded this past July 31 doesn’t mean that is “guaranteed” to be the starter. Corner OF positions are normally the easiest spots on a field to replace. If Omar thinks he can plug LF with someone else for a year, he will. Martinez obviously needs to develop more.

Dan Murphy has had a great first week, just enjoy it. I doubt he will be an impact type plater as well, but I hope I am wrong.

  22. SadClownGoodMets says:

Yea, kind of like Jimmy Rollins, right?
