postGame: Mets 3 Marlins 0
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 8, 2008 9:52 pm

The second-place Mets (61–54) defeated the third-place Marlins (61–55) by the score of 3 to 0 in Shea Stadium.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from tonight’s game, go to SNY.tv.

Oliver Perez took on 26 batters and did not allow a run, while striking out eight through seven innings pitched.  Perez is 3–3 with a 2.70 ERA in the 10 starts since Dan Warthen replaced Rick Peterson as the team’s pitching coach.

David Wright hit a two-run home run in the first inning, while Carlos Delgado hit a solo shot in the fourth, both of which landed in the bleachers.

Dan Murphy is my favorite player on the team.

You were holding your breath, as was I, but Aaron Heilman set down all six batters he faced in relief of Perez, which is great to see.  Frankly, that’s an understatement.  This team needs Heilman, and tonight was a very, very good sign.

The Mets continue their three-game series with the Marlins tomorrow at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm, with Scott Olsen (6-6, 3.87 ERA) taking on Brian Stokes, who will be making his first start of the season and first-ever start for the Mets.

hopefully tomorrow the post game post says the tied for first place defeated the third place marlins. i

  2. MetsFan4Decades says:

Pitching was just great tonight. Kudos to Perez and Heilman.

Wish we could start scoring more runs per game though so we don’t have to hold our breath when the BP comes in.

    Nice win. Crisp baseball.

Woo-Hoo !! Started my weekend off nice.

  3. Andrew says:

    Dan Murphy is hitting .500!

    Move over, Ted Williams!

  4. Prismo says:

Dan(iel) Murphy had another great game. This kid seemed to come out of nowhere this season, and has already made his mark in the majors.

Props to Heilman for the 6 out save. I still don’t understand why Jerry left him in to pitch the 9th - using him two innings in a row almost always backfires. I think it was a dumb call on Jerry’s part, but I guess it worked out alright.

  5. mikepelfreyismyguy says:

ha, i told you aaron heilman would bounce back, no one in partiular. anyway, ha, in your face to every single person that called heilman a bum, eat your words.

  6. BeatWritersSuck says:

um…i didn’t know that we could win a game with no score…cool

  7. metmanb says:

daniel murphey is insane. the last time i got giddy when a rookie got to the plate was when david was a rook. it seems that every at bat murphey has there are more than 6 pitches

    • DavidDog says:

in that case, why might wanna work on spelling his last name

    • gomets6091 says:

you weren’t giddy when Mike Jacobs hit 11 homers in his first 100 at bats? I am liking Murphy a lot too, and I hope he can keep it up, but I’m not expecting him to become a superstar or anything. There have been too many flashes in the pan for that (Benny Agbayani, Timo Perez, Shane Spencer, etc.)….I’m just gonna enjoy watching him ride this wave, however long it lasts, and hopefully it’s enough to help the Mets get into the playoffs this year, like Benny in ‘99 or Timo in 2000.

  8. AngryFan says:

    Any word on Church?

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Had extensive medical tests in NY today. No results yet.
Took batting practice today. If test results are good, he’ll do rehab games in the minors and could possibly be back 9-10 days. (so they said on the pre game show).

  9. DavidDog says:

“The second-place Mets (61–54) defeated the third-place Marlins (61–55) by the score of 0 to 0 in Shea Stadium”

Hey! we’re one game back, that’s the same score the pirates just defeated the phils by…

  10. Chris the Teacher says:

my season ticket package went from 16k to over 40k today. lets go citi.

  11. Chris the Teacher says:

i have 3 partners for 4 seats, but its almost impossible to do. i promised my dad i would keep these at all costs…i didnt know all costs would be so much money

    • KinersKornerman says:

You are a good son and a good fan.
      LGM

      • Chris the Teacher says:

haha good fan yes, but i was not a good son! i sell about 80% of my games *at face value* to make ends meet, its like a second job. thanks though pal

    • Tidewater says:

Teachers really ought to know the meaning of “at all cost.”

  12. Chris the Teacher says:

did you gave 2 seats confused or 4?

    • Confused says:

just the 2 in loge reserve

      • Chris the Teacher says:

sorry to bother buddy, but where did they move you to in citi and when. some of my friends are still waiting.

        • Confused says:

once they said 18k i really stopped listening. but im behind home at shea, and the tickets they want to give me are on the first base side in citi.

  13. dominicanboy08 says:

the mets need to sign ollie, he has randy johnson stuff when he is on.he is lefty, young and can b3at the phillies, braves and yankees. with this new wind up he finally seems under control and with command of his pitches.

    what you guys think?

    • KinersKornerman says:

upgrade to Garland or Sheets. Ollie is my third choice. He’ll want 4yrs/$50MM

      • dominicanboy08 says:

but i think perez has better stuff than garland, sheets is a true ace but he will cost a lot

      • The crazy thing is that he’ll probably get it - or at least get very close.

        • That’s not to say that he doesn’t or won’t deserve it, but it is crazy just because of the salaries involved. If Gil Meche gets 11 mil a year and Ted Lilly gets 10 mil a year, Ollie should command at least 12.

        • KinersKornerman says:

The Ollie that pitched today is worth more than $12MM. The one that showed up San Francisco for less than an inning is worth muchless. The rip on Ollie is the lack of consistency. I hope he gets it together and gets tha money.

        • therealsince86 says:

You guys are crazy. Ollie’s going to ask for 4/60. We will be lucky to get him for 4/52. Sheets will get something like 4/64.

        • KinersKornerman says:

TRS, you want to pay OP $13-15MM per year, and you call ME crazy? :)

It all depends on how well any of these guys go down the stretch. They are pitching for their next contracts.

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Oliver Can only command 12.5 mil a year, if I’m correct, or was arbitration last offseason?

        • yeah he’s gonna be a free agent and will command whatever the market determines he’s worth

        • therealsince86 says:

Yup, he’s a freebe. He will ask for 4/60. Again I think the best option is to strike early with him and see what happens.

        • therealsince86 says:

Oh and not to mention that he for sure will be offered arbitration by us. That way if he leaves we get the picks.

        • ravi3 says:

problem with offering arbitration however is this: Boras as we all know, loves to drag out the negotiations. If we were to offer arbitration, The deadline for Ollie to either accept or reject arbitratio is December 1st I think.

If Ollie rejects arbitration, then the Mets can’t negotiate with him until May 1st, and he certainly won’t accept it. It gives Boras much more leverage over the Mets, so that 4/60 could potentially be higher. Hopefully Perez can think for himself somewhat, and realize how much his career was revitalized upon coming to Queens.

        • Tidewater says:

They changed the rules about negotiating with your own players, didn’t they?

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

      I agree. It’s going to cost though….

      • KinersKornerman says:

With Johan, Maine and Pelf for next year, you want a solid #2 and a steady #5. IMHO, Garland or Sheets are solid #2 guys. Not sure about OP for that role. And he’s too expensive to be a #5.

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

My friend, Garland is no #2. He’s had one full year with less than 4 ERA in his career. Ben Sheets isn’t steady with his injury history.

Oliver Perez has way more potential than Garland, and can stay healthy better than Sheets. A 30 year old Garland is probably closer to a steady 5 rather than a solid 2.

        • therealsince86 says:

Although not a 2 he is closer to a 2 than a five. Garland is at least Maine with more innings. He is a solid 3 on most rotations. He is the 200 inning man. His ERA does float in the 4’s but his WHIP is solid enough and he has had something like 7 seasons of 190 innings or more.
He’s better than Carlos Silva and much more consistant than Perez. He is only 28 but does not have the lights out potential that Perez has.
He, however, would be a great pick up for the rotation because of the amount of stress he takes off the pen.

    • Two-By-Four says:

Randy Johnson threw 98-99 mph consistently.

  14. Chris the Teacher says:

    ayayay!!!! church is cleared woohooO!!!

  15. As an aside… the Marlins signed Paul LoDuca to a minor league deal and claimed Brad Ausmus off of waivers from Houston. If they work out a trade or salary dump with Houston, that worries me, because Ausmus, while not great, is tough, and could provide the veteran presence and leadership behind the plate that the fish really need. We all know these fish are tough, and anything they do to improve should be taken note of by Omar so that he can at least look into improving our team in a similar manner.

    • KinersKornerman says:

Dan Murphy is a better addition to a team that either of those two fire hydrants.

      • Dan Murphy has been great - no argument. But keep in mind he’s a rookie and rooks often start out very hot only to cool off when their scouting reports get around.

My only point was that the Marlins have played us very tough and either or both of these guys, particularly Ausmus, could really improve their ballclub.

        • KinersKornerman says:

I agree with you with regards to his defense and dealing with the young pitchers. He isn’t much of a bat, tho.

The thing that amazes about the Marlins is how they have scored (546) fewer run than they allowed (568), and are still in a race. You would think this would eventually catch up with them.

        • It probably will. But I’ve been saying that all year and I’ve still got a face full of crow, so what the heII do I know?

    • Ellen says:

Exactly. We are so focused on the Phils but the Fish have been spoilers before and are poised to be spoilers again. I would always keep an equal eye on the Fish as I do on the Phils.

    • Tidewater says:

Ausmus is a joke right now. He’s an instant out. If Brad Ausmus has you worried, I cannot imagine how you possibly sleep at night, with real things of concern in the world like space aliens, Y2K and the fluoridization of the water supply.

  16. Two-By-Four says:

One down and two to go for the sweep.

  17. Prismo says:

If Church comes back (knock on wood), I hope Jerry gives Murphy a chance to start at second. He deserves it.

    • therealsince86 says:

I am guessing that he and Tatis will platoon in LF. Besides I don’t expect Church to play more than 2 games in a row for a while. Castillo and Easley will split 2nd. The kid needs more time at 2nd over the offseason. He looks natural in LF.

In fact, I hope the Mets give him and Evans the chance to earn/ platoon LF next season. Do that and bring back Delgado for 1st and you have a TON of money to spend on pitching.

      • TheIcon says:

Very much agree with sticking it out with Delgado for another season and saving the money for pitching. Go after Sheets, Sabathia and any other potentially big and effective names on the market.

        • therealsince86 says:

It just makes sense. All of our close to ready prospects can play 1B/LF from Murphy, Evans, Carp, and even Fmart I am sure could play some 1st.

However, we don’t have a lot of pitching besides Niese.

The market is much deeper in impact pitchers than it is in 1B or LF.

Go get Krod, Perez/Garland and a 10 million dollar guy :) (35-40 million)

Trade Wagner to an AL team that needs a closer like Cleveland.

I know our offense has not been great this season but I just don’t think there is that much out there to upgrade it with.

        • KinersKornerman says:

Wait. I thought Delgado’s contract is up after this season. If so he’s gonna want a multi-year deal. Am I mistaken?

        • therealsince86 says:

Has an option year for 12 million with a 4 million buyout. Had this discussion so the money police please on jump on me but if you look at it the right way we won’t find anyone with Delgado’s production that only cost us 8 million.

        • KinersKornerman says:

I understand. thank you for the clarity.

        • mikepelfreyismyguy says:

actually, last i checked, wasnt it a 16 million dollar with a 4 million dollar buy out

  18. TheIcon says:

I’m probably one of the few people tonight who didn’t panic when Heilman came in. For as shaky as he’s been this year, I’ve still got confidence in the guy, mostly based off past performance. We all know what he can do when he’s on and he was on tonight. Good outing for him.

  19. therealsince86 says:

Come on situational hitting Pirates. Man on 3rd 1 out.

  20. nsr says:

i wouldnt touch sheets because of his past injury problems and i wouldnt touch sabathia because he probably hasnt seen his toes in 5 years so he is probably going to be prone to injury soon.

    • KinersKornerman says:

would you touch Garland or Dempster?

    • therealsince86 says:

Eh, CC is a stud. He won’t get 7 years but I would sign him for 5/100 any day.
Sheets is injury prone but that is why I would take a chance in signing him. He has ace like potential but may not get ace money. Something like 4/60 may get him.

You saying those things are just like saying I would not get Perez because he could go back to the old Perez.

  21. jimmyk456 says:

    PIRATES FINALLY SCORE. GO BUCS

  22. nsr says:

    pirates 1-0 in twelfth

  23. nsr says:

i would definately go after dempster and keep ollie and then you have a rotation of santana, dempster, pelf, ollie, and maine as 5th starter

    • It’s not gonna be a simple as “keep Oliie.” I’d love to bring him back too, but they’re gonna have to pay.

And I think they will be prepared to shell out some money to field the best team possible for Citifield… Probably not CC money, but a fair share of bucks will be spent.

      • therealsince86 says:

Yup, I wish they could have finalized something before the end of the season. Now you almost have to lump him in with everyone else.
If Garland, Perez, Sheets, and Burnett are all out there I would offer all of them the same contract and see who bit first.

Of course I would love to have CC but you are right about the money. A lot depends on the RSox and Yankees. Do they go for Tex? That is why I want no part of Tex. A guy like CC is worth so much more than Tex to the Mets.

        • Tex is nice, but no way do I want the Mets to even try to get him. He’s gonna command huge money and many years, and I don’t think he’s worth either - not for the Mets at least.

It will be interesting to see what Kennedy and Hughes give the Yankees down the stretch because that will have a direct bearing on what they offer to guys like CC and perhaps even Ollie Perez. They may go after Burnett too because he kills them.

Garland is intriguing to me… good pitcher that I think for some reason might not be on some people’s radar. For that reason, he may not cost as much as expected.

Anwyay, lets go Mets! Maybe Brian Stokes surprises us and throws a great game.

        • KinersKornerman says:

I’m figuring CC goes to the Yanks for Johan-level money. They are desperate for pitching. Angels now need to keep Tex since they gave up Kotchman for him. BoSox, Cards and Philly will be chasing the other starters. So I think we have a shot at one of Garland, Sheets, Burnett, or Dempster only if Omar moves quickly, but if so, we will lose out on Ollie.

Also should consider than if Mets sign an “A” free agent, they could lose their #1 pick, so letting Ollie go could get a pick back from somebody.

        • To hell with the pick, we’re gonna need Ollie back. Pay the man. Let’s not forget how young he is.

The other guys are nice, but it might be most reasonable to expect the Mets to resign Perez rather than to spend Johan type money on CC or 65-70 mil on Sheets.

        • nsr says:

i WOULD NOT go after tex because a guy name albert pujols is right around the corner in the winter of ‘09/’10

    • therealsince86 says:

Dempster is going to get 3/30 and he has only had one good season in 7 years and 2 in his career. He is also 31 years old. If you could get him on a 2 year 16-20 million dollar contract then sure.

  24. Who knows if I would feel this way if the Mets lost tonite, but can we all give up some props for baseball, the greatest game on the planet!

    I love this game!

  25. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

    2-0 Pirates

  26. nsr says:

is anyone watching the phills game? im following on gamecast. what is with the infield hits?

    • MetsFan1989 says:

right it seems this year more than ever. infield hits r happening a bunch of times each game

  27. el_giacomo says:

    Let’s Go Pirates!

  28. TheIcon says:

Come Hansen, don’t let a fellow St. John’s graduate down! Though I don’t think he has his degree yet.

  29. therealsince86 says:

Rollins at 1B with the big boys coming up. Down 2, 1 out.

  30. nsr says:

is shane victorino the greatest player in the history of baseball or is it just me?

    • He’s quite good, despite the bad rep he has around here. They were right let Rowand go - Victorino is just as good.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I feel the same way about Jayson Werth. Every time he comes to the plate, I expect nothing other than a hit.

      • I hate to give Phillies props, but Werth is an animal. They have some really good players over there, outside of the starts like Utley, Rollins and Howard. If only they had some pitching.

        • phillygalfan says:

It’s not the pitching - we’ve had some great outings from Blanton, Kendrick, and Moyer. They need to bench Rollins, seriously for lack of effort, and Howard needs to rethink his swing, since most pitchers have learned how to pitch to him…… We don’t deserve anything at this point, unless they connect the darn bat w/ the ball…..

  31. el_giacomo says:

just can’t have a stress-free night of baseball, can we?

  32. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Heartbreaking loss for Phils. Utley robbed of an extra base hit and Victorino was doubled off.

  33. el_giacomo says:

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Thank you Ace Chutley! ‘Preciate that double play. :D

  34. KinersKornerman says:

Good job Pirates!!! Gotta go give some love to a Pirate blog now.

  35. mr.gee21 says:

One game out. And to think, a Philly co-worker of mine was talking smack a few days ago about the season being over…

    • To be fair, Mets fans talked quite a bit of smack when we last beat the Phills, so what goes around…

      • KinersKornerman says:

yeah, but as bad as the Mets have been, we cannot lay claim to 10,000 losses.

        • Preach on brotherman.

Here’s to less than 10,000 losses!

        • Tidewater says:

With our history, if we’d been around as long as the Phillies we surely would lay claim to 10,000 losses.

That’s like saying Nick Esasky is a better hitter than Pujols because he has more career homers (that’s a random out of my a– example — Pujols might have more homers than Esasky, but you get my point. I hope.)

  36. nsr says:

to go back to next year i WOULD NOT go after tex because albert pujols is available the offseason after next, so if we can pick up gado’s option for next year, then we’re coming into next season with a great chance to get pujols, the best 1st baseman in baseball

    • KinersKornerman says:

you don’t think the Cards will pay him before he goes to FA?

      • nsr says:

i think hes gonna want to come into FA

        • KinersKornerman says:

from what I’ve seen of how the fans in St. Louis love their players unconditionally, why would any sane player opt to come to NY and be subjected to the boo’s and ridicule of lunatic Mets fans?

        • nsr says:

i think around 140 million reasons would be good enough for him

        • therealsince86 says:

And why would St. Louis let him leave? Besides this guy needs to get his facts straight, he won’t be a FA until after the 2011 season as he has a club option for 2011. The Cardinals will end up extending his contract WAY before then.

        • krispy644 says:

NO WAY IN H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS IS PUJOLS GOING TO SIGN ANYWHERE ELSE BUT ST LOUIS.

Mets need to go after Tex, however I’m hearing that Torri Hunter is influencing him to stay in LA.

          haha

        • therealsince86 says:

I can’t believe I wasted this much time debating something that was false to start with. Do you guys not fact check at all before you make a post like this? How do you say that Pujols is a FA after 2009 without even checking this? You missed it by 2 years. LOL. Way to really be thinking ahead. If Delgado can ONLY hold out for 3 more years, LOL.

        • KinersKornerman says:

Welcome to Metsblog (presented by Geico), where facts are optional and nobody knows how to type “google”. So simple, even a caveman could post here.

    • nsr says:

      ***season after next***

    • therealsince86 says:

With an injury on every part of his body. He’s breaking down already. One of the best hitters of our generation but I still think our best focus should be on pitching.
Get Krod, 1 of the top 4 pitchers and a veteran guy like Lowe.

    • Tidewater says:

I see little chance that guy will ever play for anyone but St. Loo. They have that draw on players for some reason.

  37. nsr says:

if we sign ollie and another FA this offseason then are starting pitching will be set for 2010 the we can concentrate on pujols

    • therealsince86 says:

I guess you are as suming that Niese will be a big league pitcher? You don’t think that the RSox and Yankees etc. will be in on Pujols? I wan’t no part in the 25 million dollar 8 year contract that he is going to be looking for. Don’t get me wrong, he is an incredible hitter. As I said the best of our generation but do you really want him until he is 38?

  38. therealsince86 says:

Guys, I keep forgeting about Burnett. He can opt out of his 2 year 24 million dollar contract. Why wouldn’t he? He can command Sheets type money for 4+ years. I don’t think I would get him but he will drive the cost of some of the others down.

  39. krispy644 says:

i was very impressed by Ollie and Heilman’s work today. no further comments.

    PEACE!

  40. kbh218 says:

Dan Murphy is pimp. I normally don’t get too excited about rookie call ups but this guy is something special. I hope the Mets can find a way to dump Castillo and his ridiculous contract so this guy can get some time at 2B next season along with A. Reyes.

    • therealsince86 says:

Why on earth would you want to see Reyes getting real time at 2B? He is not a good hitter. Sorry. Give him enough AB’s and he will bat around .250 with and OBP of less than .300.

As for moving Castillo. I think you could, if he could come back and play decent this season. You could most likely get rid of him by paying about 8 million making the contract 3 years 10 million.

I would not be sure that Murphy can play it however, he has only played a few games there and had some difficulties. I would think right now he is competing for the LF job next season.

      • therealsince86 says:

My bad, I did not realize he is already at .255 and .296. An injured Castillo had an OBP 70 points higher.

        • kbh218 says:

Strictly for defense…similar to Endy Chavez. He has great range. I think a cardboard cut-out has better range than Castillo.

  41. therealsince86 says:

Before you guys start in on me, I am bored and just throwing thoughts out there.
The Padres have no offense what so ever and have good pitching. What if we worked out a trade of Beltran for Peavy? It gives them a great CF to play in that huge ballpark and gives us a pitcher that paired with Santana would be unbelievable.

Again, I don’t want to trade Beltran. I am just thinking out loud.

    • nsr says:

i dont want to trade beltran either but i think you would have to atleast consider it if you were the mets. if they really think that fmart can become a star then i wouldnt mind the move

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Beltran for Peavy? I would say yes.

      • therealsince86 says:

Question is would they? Peavy’s contract is very reasonable to start with but goes up a lot towards the end.

        10:$15M, 11:$16M, 12:$17M, 13: $22M club option ($4M buyout)

Again, they have to get offense, they are terrible and Peavy is doing them no good. I don’t think they would trade Young as his contract is cheaper but they have to trade someone to get some offense. No FA is going to come there, would you commit offensive suicide either? They have to do it by trade and I can’t think they would find a player better for that park than Beltran.

      • West Milly says:

isn’t there a no trade clause?

plus, I wouldn’t trade Beltran for Peavy if I happened to be the GM of the San Diego Camos. He could net them a great deal more prospects wise and they are leaps bounds and claymores away from only needing 1 hitter in their lineup. The be plannin fo the future, as they say in places far from my house.

    • Tina says:

No no no. Beltran saves runs. As far as I’m concerned, he needs to be a met for the duration.

sry i didnt realize when he was a FA. i gues it sounded good in my head while it lasted.. my bad

  43. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Not sure if anyone is following the Yankees, but Ian Kennedy returned to the rotation tonight to fill in for Joba. He hasn’t pitched in the majors in a long time, and tonight they needed him to put up a solid performance. The result?

    2IP, 9H, 5ER (68 pitches)

    • KinersKornerman says:

Can you say “C.C. the Yankee”?

      • therealsince86 says:

        Very possible.

        Predictions

        CC: Yankees
        Tex: Angels
        Perez: Mets
        Garland: Phillies
        Sheets: Braves

        • KinersKornerman says:

          I like your list: Add
          Burnett: Orioles
          Manny: Dodgers
          Vlad: White Sox
          Burrell: Cardinals
          Dunn: Rangers
          Pudge: Marlins
          Giambi: Giants

          any other thoughts?

        • mr.gee21 says:

One other thought: if Perez is the only major signing the Mets make next year, there are going to be many many upset comments on this blog.

    • Otm_Shank says:

He is still very young — just remember all the problems Mike Pelfrey had before this year.

I think the most impressive thing with murphy is his last AB vs pinto. I mean your a young kid just called up recently, your lefty on lefty, 3-2 count and david wright is on deck? Surely your getting a fastball to hit. Of course murphy did not, and he took the 3-2 slider (i belive it was) like he knew it was coming.

If murphy keeps hitting like this and church does come back they have to keep murphys bat in the lineup somehow. As for next year i believe he’ll be our second basemen, he’s got the work ethic to learn the position fulltime.

My only question is… and this is premature, lets just say murphy might be our 2nd basemen of the future, and fmart is the left fielder of the future, and church is the right fielder the next couple of years. Aren’t we a little heavy on lefties, especially if we decide to re-sign delgado for a year or two.

I guess it all depends on how the guys hit vs lefties though. Church was doing pretty well vs them, murphy had good number in the minors, delgado is delgado and i’m not sure on fmart.

For now though were only a game out. Lets keep it going.

    • therealsince86 says:

You are way ahead of yourself being that Murphy has played 17 games there and commited 5 errors. I know it’s early and he could learn to play there but it was more at his suggestion. I think he stays in LF. We like it or not have a 2nd baseman and do not have a LF.

About the whole signing Oliver. . . I wouldn’t be dead set against it, but there is a Mr. Hyde hiding in the version of Oliver we are seeing the last month or two.

The only way I’d sign OP to a $12 million per year contract is if that $12 was performance based. Namely innings pitched and ERA. If he turns into the Hyde Perez, his innings and runs will be down and he gets paid less and vice versa. He’ll I’d give him $15 million per if $5 million of it was performance based. If he puts up a 3.50 ERA over 190 innings that is worth $15 million. But a 4.50 ERA over 150 innings, not so much.

I’ve never heard of an ERA clause though.

    • therealsince86 says:

Then you are not getting him.
Ollie is going to get at least 13+ and with this FA market and it’s questions, there will be no major incentive clause on that money.
CC, wants 20+ and is fat
      Sheets, injury history
      Burnett, injury history
      Lowe, Old
Dempster, 1 good season in 10 years.

Ollie and Boras are going to get paid.

  46. jetsmets says:

First of all….Dan Murphy is a Dave Magadan type player. No power, might hit a little bit. He will be a career bench player. The Mets will not give him an opportunity to play his natural position (3b). The Mets have turned him into a utility player (2b,lf,1b). They will never allow him to be a full time player. They will go out and sign a proven player with numbers. Not that I agree with this, but he is not a Fmart with all the hype.

I would love nothing better than to move him to 2b and leave him there for 10 years…..Saves money for Pitching (castillo should be traded and we have to eat half the contract.) However, that will not happen……

Next year outfield is Fmart , Beltran and Church GUARANTEED…take that to the bank……..Delgado will be at 1b,,,,Murphy will be a bench player along with chavez and tatis(May platoon with fmart)….

They will spend money on bullpen and starting pitching….Which I agree with…..Fix the bullpen,,,sign ollie to 4 years and 55 mill…..

Pitching staff will be santana, maine, perez, pelf, neise and pedro……..

They can sign pedro for the same money as he has made for two years….Sign ollie for an additional 6 mill a year….REup delgado for 6 mill less……Lose salary from alou, elduqu, and other scrubs……….They save a ton of money next year………

There will be no big FA next year…..Take it to the bank!!!!!!!

  47. therealsince86 says:

I understand, but I want no part in it. I think we would be better off with 2 pitchers for that price.
