postGame: Mets 3 Marlins 0
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 8, 2008 9:52 pm

The second-place Mets (61–54) defeated the third-place Marlins (61–55) by the score of 3 to 0 in Shea Stadium.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from tonight’s game, go to SNY.tv.

Oliver Perez took on 26 batters and did not allow a run, while striking out eight through seven innings pitched.  Perez is 3–3 with a 2.70 ERA in the 10 starts since Dan Warthen replaced Rick Peterson as the team’s pitching coach.

David Wright hit a two-run home run in the first inning, while Carlos Delgado hit a solo shot in the fourth, both of which landed in the bleachers.

Dan Murphy is my favorite player on the team.

You were holding your breath, as was I, but Aaron Heilman set down all six batters he faced in relief of Perez, which is great to see.  Frankly, that’s an understatement.  This team needs Heilman, and tonight was a very, very good sign.

The Mets continue their three-game series with the Marlins tomorrow at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm, with Scott Olsen (6-6, 3.87 ERA) taking on Brian Stokes, who will be making his first start of the season and first-ever start for the Mets.

Pitching was just great tonight. Kudos to Perez and Heilman.

Wish we could start scoring more runs per game though so we don’t have to hold our breath when the BP comes in.

    Nice win. Crisp baseball.

Woo-Hoo !! Started my weekend off nice.

    Dan Murphy is hitting .500!

    Move over, Ted Williams!

  4. Prismo says:

Dan(iel) Murphy had another great game. This kid seemed to come out of nowhere this season, and has already made his mark in the majors.

Props to Heilman for the 6 out save. I still don’t understand why Jerry left him in to pitch the 9th - using him two innings in a row almost always backfires. I think it was a dumb call on Jerry’s part, but I guess it worked out alright.

ha, i told you aaron heilman would bounce back, no one in partiular. anyway, ha, in your face to every single person that called heilman a bum, eat your words.

daniel murphey is insane. the last time i got giddy when a rookie got to the plate was when david was a rook. it seems that every at bat murphey has there are more than 6 pitches

    • DavidDog says:

in that case, why might wanna work on spelling his last name

    • gomets6091 says:

you weren’t giddy when Mike Jacobs hit 11 homers in his first 100 at bats? I am liking Murphy a lot too, and I hope he can keep it up, but I’m not expecting him to become a superstar or anything. There have been too many flashes in the pan for that (Benny Agbayani, Timo Perez, Shane Spencer, etc.)….I’m just gonna enjoy watching him ride this wave, however long it lasts, and hopefully it’s enough to help the Mets get into the playoffs this year, like Benny in ‘99 or Timo in 2000.

    Any word on Church?

Had extensive medical tests in NY today. No results yet.
Took batting practice today. If test results are good, he’ll do rehab games in the minors and could possibly be back 9-10 days. (so they said on the pre game show).

    what you guys think?

    • KinersKornerman says:

upgrade to Garland or Sheets. Ollie is my third choice. He’ll want 4yrs/$50MM

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

      I agree. It’s going to cost though….

      • KinersKornerman says:

With Johan, Maine and Pelf for next year, you want a solid #2 and a steady #5. IMHO, Garland or Sheets are solid #2 guys. Not sure about OP for that role. And he’s too expensive to be a #5.

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

My friend, Garland is no #2. He’s had one full year with less than 4 ERA in his career. Ben Sheets isn’t steady with his injury history.

Oliver Perez has way more potential than Garland, and can stay healthy better than Sheets. A 30 year old Garland is probably closer to a steady 5 rather than a solid 2.

        • therealsince86 says:

Although not a 2 he is closer to a 2 than a five. Garland is at least Maine with more innings. He is a solid 3 on most rotations. He is the 200 inning man. His ERA does float in the 4’s but his WHIP is solid enough and he has had something like 7 seasons of 190 innings or more.
He’s better than Carlos Silva and much more consistant than Perez. He is only 28 but does not have the lights out potential that Perez has.
He, however, would be a great pick up for the rotation because of the amount of stress he takes off the pen.

    • Two-By-Four says:

Randy Johnson threw 98-99 mph consistently.
