Of all the big names traded at the deadline, Casey Kotchman played the worst for his new team. That changed Friday night with a three for three performance against the Diamondbacks. That raised his batting average with the Braves over the Mendoza line to .216. Chipper Jones returned to the lineup with a two for four night, including a mamoth home run.
Jason Bergmann‘s stretch of nine starts with seven good performances improves his chances of becoming a part of the Nationals rotation in 2009.
The Marlins took out an insurance policy, signing Paul Lo Duca to a minor league contract. Paul played for the Marlins in 2004-2005. The Nationals released him as they decided to go with their young players.
Brett Myers pitches for the Phillies Saturday night. He’s pitched much better at home, allowing 10 fewer hits than innings pitched in Philadelphia, but 20 more hits than innings pitched on the road.

John Maine tossed a 61–pitch, three-inning
simulated game yesterday afternoon.
Jerry Manuel, on Maine, speaking to reporters yesterday:
“(Saturday) probably will be a big day. We’ll see how he recovers from (the simulated game), if he feels good and normal stiffness and that type of thing, he should be fine for his start on Wednesday.”
The Mets play the Nationals on Wednesday in Washington, DC.
