argenis in the 2 hole can stop. he can’t hit at the MLB level, at least not right now. i understand that easley needs days off every now and again, so playing reyes is necessary, but he can’t hit 2nd.

tough break for pelfrey. got burned on some off-speed stuff, then started to lose it. slider looked better though and his change is coming around, even if it was hit a couple of times.

    • Gina says:

I agree, if they’re going to start Reyes in needs to be somewhere in the bottom of the line-up.

      • hyperion4 says:

I can understand not wanting to have Schneider-Endy-A. Reyes-pitcher as the second half of your lineup.

        • Gina says:

But why insert an offensive blackhole into the productive part of the order? I’d rather be top heavy and weak on the bottom them mediocre through-out.

  2. J0eSmiTh says:

yeah. more and more id rather have Castillo as option #2.

Argenis gave us a nice jolt, but he cant hit consistently.

  3. KinersKornerman says:

I have no problem rotating that job around to Castillo, Murphy, Endy, Beltran, Church, or whoever is hot at the time.

We disliked Willie Randolph’s stubborness. Why not do something different?

  4. nyj01827 says:

I wouldn’t mind seeing Daniel Murphy get a start or two at 2B. By doing that, you’re allowing Endy Chavez to play. Either one of them are capable of hitting second. I want to see what Murphy has at 2B though. For right now he’s doing a good job eating up one of the corner’s in the OF, but when F-Mart eventually takes that spot and Church is healthy next season the only long term options seem to be 2B and 1B. Delgado’s option will likely be picked up though. They’ll always manage to find ways to get him at bat’s if he keeps hitting well.

Castillo should play better now that he was given a month off to get his body back, but it’s hard to expect a lot out of him. He’ll get on base and be a mediocre 2 hitter, but his defensive range is limited. Argenis Reyes shouldn’t have batted second. It didn’t make sense with Endy Chavez and Daniel Murphy in the starting line up on the same day. Argenis is a lot like Gotay, except faster and better defensively. He’s probably not this team’s future second basemen, just like Nick Evans isn’t our future 1B. Both of these guy’s do have potential to develop role playing bench roles though.

  5. nyj01827 says:

Some things don’t make as much sense like the Marlins rocking Pelfrey when ever he’s out there, just like Heilman doing really well against them. With Luis Castillo coming back, he’ll take some of the pressure off of Easley. If Easley plays every day until the end of the season, he’ll probably burn out. Castillo can start the 2-3 days a week when A. Reyes was so Argenis Reyes is more of a pinch hitting/pinch-hittingdefensive replacement option late in games. Hopefully, A. Reyes is able to stay on the roster after the Mets activate Maine, Wagner, Luis Castillo and possibly Marlon Anderson (they’ll probably wait until Sept on him).

  6. Two-By-Four says:

I have noticed that as fast as some of people here will rip a player having a hard time of it they will just as fast proclaim greatness for players going through a hot streak. If you listened to Gary today you would have heard him list the players in the Mets past that have gotten off to starts similar to the one Murphy is enjoying right now. The vast majority of them turned out to be wash outs. Now this doesn’t mean that Murphy will not be a great hitter, he may very well turn out to be one. But let’s keep things in perspective and enjoy the performance he’s putting up now without expectations.

  7. nyj01827 says:

    1. Reyes. 2. Chavez 3. Wright 4. Delgado 5.Beltran 6. Murphy (2B) 7. Tatis 8. Schneider/Castro

    Or 1. Reyes 2. Castillo 3. Wright 4. Delgado 5. Beltran 6. Murphy 7. Tatis 8. Schneider/Castro

    Or 1. Reyes 2. Murphy 3. Wright 4. Delgado 5. Beltran 6. Tatis 7. Easley 8. Schneider/Castro

The one thing the Mets should make a priority is to not bat Brian Schneider (Cancel while Castro’s hurt) 7th. That’d mean we’re actually depending on him. Castro’s a better hetter though. Schneider’s numbers remind me a lot of Rey Ordonez. Similar amount of home runs, around .250 batting average and great defense. I don’t think we would have batted Rey 7th. It suprised me they didn’t bat Hampton ahead of him in 00′.

They should have tried getting Giles. Maybe they didn’t because the Padres would have expected too much via trade, but they should still look at Randy Winn too. The Giants may just be happy to get rid of his salary as long as they don’t have to pay. He’s a little above market value, but nothing ridiculous. He’d also provide some insurance until F-Mart’s ready next season or if Church has problems again.

    • Gina says:

Why they didn’t claim him on waivers I don’t know, but regardless Giles would have blocked the trade. He wants to stay in CA.

    • hyperion4 says:

I would prefer Endy or A. Reyes to bat 8th instead of Schneider. I think it’s a good idea to have a guy with speed in front of the pitcher.

    • metsjam says:

I like the third linup. I like having a hitter batting number 2. Chavez doesn’t cut it and I’m still extremely doubtful that Castillo has anything left. I much prefer Easley. I’d like to give Murphy every chance to prove himself. If Church ever makes it back he’d also be a good candidate for the two spot, but I’d still rather see him batting sixth.

  8. nyj01827 says:

You’re right. It’s way too early to tell. No one should expect this kid to be Robin Ventura or who ever people are expecting. Nor should we expect him to be Alex Ochoa either. It’s too early to tell. The main thing is the Mets need to win now and he’s helping us win. Expanding upon his versatility in showing if he can play 2B would both help up now and for the future because it’d less us know if he can do it at the Major League level and it’d keep his hot bat in the line up.

  9. nyj01827 says:

The Mets unwillingness to allow prospect’s to develop is what has caused a lot of them not to develop. They either get impatient with injuries, they trade the guy to early to get a plug-in-the-gap kind of player or they just don’t give a solid chance for a number of months. They gave Joe Smith nearly two whole seasons to show what he’s got. No we know what he’s made of. He’s not a bad pitcher, but he’s not great either. We gave Feliciano a chance. People don’t realize it, but he came out of the Estes trade which came from Shinjo/Relaford. He’s turned out to be very productive for the Mets the last few years.

The Mets gave up on Bannister because of injuries. Last season may have been a fluke, but he has potential to be a decent 3-4 type starting pitcher like Humber or Mulvey. Giving up Humber/Mulvey was worth it for Johan because we knew what we were getting, but Burgos didn’t make any sense. Even if Burgos didn’t get hurt and did alright, it wouldn’t make sense. You don’t trade SP’s for RP’s.

The Mets didn’t allow Heath Bell to develop. The guy threw really hard with us. He had great AAA numbers. They didn’t give Ring a chance either, but I don’t blame them because they had more lefty depth and his stuff didn’t look as good. The best thing you can do sometimes is just not trade your prospects. Even if it can help to get a guy like Manny. It’s just not worth it. You can replace a guy like Manny, but it’ll eventually be with an old Moises Alou/Shawn Green type hitter. Seeing guy’s like Murphy and F-Mart is more refreshing. Youth wins in this game.

    • hyperion4 says:

I disagree on Bannister and Burgos. At the time of the trade, the Mets didn’t think Bannister’s upside was comparable to Maine’s and Pelfrey’s, and right now that judgment is looking OK. Bannister has been battered in just about every game for going on two months now. The Mets saw Burgos as ultimately having closer potential. They may not get anything out of him, so they may have guessed wrong on him. But I don’t think there should be any rule about trading SPs for RPs. It depends on where you have a surplus and where you have a need, and what kind of talents you’re dealing with.

    • gomets6091 says:

so you’re saying that it would have been a bad move to trade Pulsipher or Wilson (or even Izzy) for Mariano Rivera back in 1995? Just checking, since they were highly touted starting prospects, and Rivera was a reliever.

  10. nyj01827 says:

Giles couldn’t have blocked a trade to the Mets. He has 10 teams on his list that he can’t change during the middle of the year. The Mets aren’t on it. Boston was. I don’t know how he wasn’t claimed by the whole National League and most of the AL (it goes worse record to best and NL teams first with him). There must have been something wrong for that many teams to say now. It’s probably because the Padres expect too much in return.

    • Gina says:

Well in that case I really have no idea why we wouldn’t have put a claim in for him.

      • hyperion4 says:

I’m sure Omar knew what the Padres’s trade demands would have been from discussions about Giles before the July 31 deadline. If they were prohibitive, what’s the point of putting in a claim on him. GMs often have gentleman’s agreements about not putting in claims. If you put in claims on everyone, other GMs are not going to be doing you any favors when *you* want to get someone through.

  11. Midtown says:

I know this is off topic, but what’s going on around here? Not only do we not get as many updates as we used to (which is understandable, as not too much may be going on) but lately this site has just been phoning in the postgame summaries, or not writing them at all.

I wouldn’t be whining about it if this site were being run by one or two guys, but you have a whole staff, the backing of a television network, and probably a nice chunk of change coming in from the advertising (which is getting a little ridiculous now, too. What is the Geico lizard doing on the Metsblog banner?)

It’s just sad to see, in my opinion

    • The .500 Club says:

Couldn’t agree more. As someone who has been coming to this site every day for the last 2+ years I am incredibly disappointed in the direction Metsblog has been turning in. I don’t mind the advertisements, but I don’t like how everything is phoned in now.

Why not just change the layout of the page to make it say: For relevant info please see SNY.tv?

    • cyclone says:

Waahhh God forbid these guys have a life on the weekend, I guess giving us updates constantly during the week isn’t enough…ingrates.

  12. metsjam says:

The Mets have an important two weeks coming up. The next 15 games are probably the easiest stretch in their schedule for the entire year. The Phillies have a much tougher go of it. I’d like to see the Mets win 11 or 12 of these games. If the Mets are not up by at least a couple when they face the Phillies it won’t bode well.

  13. stearnsfan12 says:

I know it was in mop up duty but nobody has been able to answer me this question: Why is Carlos Muniz still on a MLB team?

  14. nyj01827 says:

Before this home stretch started, I said to myself the Mets have to win at least 5 of 7 to make a dent after losing 4 in a row. If they win tomorrow, they’ll achieve that.

They should try to get up a couple or at least be tied with the Phillies when they play them. They’ve actually done really well against them this year. I think they’re 9-4. They’ve done well against the Marlins. The good teams aren’t there problems. It’ll probably benefit the Mets to play Marlins and Cubs rather than getting destroyed by teams like Washington or San Diego in the last week.

  15. nyj01827 says:

Because Omar Minaya’s a dope lol He’s probably got in his mind that it was dumb to not give a guy like Heath Bell chances and that he should keep Muniz there until he turns it around. I don’t think that’ll happen though. He’s not a bad pitcher, but with the Mets having Duaner Sanchez, Aaron Heilman and Joe Smith, he’s pretty useless. They’d be much better off holding onto Stokes or calling up Vargas as a long reliever.

  16. nyj01827 says:

Actually with Wagner out, it’d make more sense to gave Collazo up as a third lefty. Even if he did throw mop up, at least he’d expand our depth. The last time they called up Collazo they had 4 lefties (more than right-handers) and didn’t use him. Some stuff they do just doesn’t make sense. Personally, I think Raul Casanova did a better job than Cancel is doing too. But he’s not on the team. It’s like he has favorites and regardless of how good or how well they peform, he’ll leave them on the team.

  17. MetsFan1989 says:

i think with the backend of our lineup as weak as it is. we should put the pitcher 8th/ we really woudlnt notice a difference.

    • Gina says:

If Castillo comes back I can agree with that because we could put him in the 9th spot, but other than him we don’t have a player to put in that spot that would make it effective.

  18. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Problem with Castillo right now is that in his rehab games, he’s been playing really badly so far (according to the reports). I don’t know if he’s had a hit yet, and I believe he’s made a couple of defensive errors as well.

Maybe he just needs to get back in gear. I hope that’s the case, anyway. I find it interesting to see so many people here hanging at least a limited amount of hope on his return now, seeing as how so many of us couldn’t stand him when he was playing regularly. And, for what it’s worth, I was always one of Castillo’s defenders (no, he wasn’t a slugger, but his OBP was quite good), but now I’m not in much of a hurry to see him come back, at least not until his numbers improve.

  19. KL15 says:

I’m curious how Castillo will act when he comes off the DL. I have a bad feeling that he will expect to be the starter. If he continues to play as horribly as he has and sulks when he gets pulled then there is only one descision to made, he has to go. In the off-season he has to be sent elsewhere and the Mets are just going to have to eat his contract or at least half of it. Regardless of what they get out of him. I, like most of you do not know what in the h#!! Omar Minya was thinking when he gave this washed up piece of never was to begin with a four year deal at his age.

  20. el_giacomo says:

Bad loss, it stinks, but we can still feel good about taking the series from a team hot on our tail in the standings.

Non-Mets, but what an amazing finish in the Men’s 4×100 freestyle relay tonight!!! Lezak had me goin’ NUTS those last 25 meters or so! Didn’t think there was any way we’d catch the French on the last leg…..GO TEAM USA!!! Wow…ridin’ a serious high from that race! Love the Mets to death, but my Olympic Fever has officially set in!

  21. MetsFanInVegas says:

I’m disappointed. A year from now when the UFL starts the New York team is going to be playing on Citi Field. The season lasts through Thanksgiving. With that said, the Mets are going to be playing on a field chewed up from football during the last few months of the season.

    • MetfaninFL says:

UFL? When will people learn that there is no room for inferior football in this country. Why would people pay to watch football worse than college and the NFL? Its a shame our field has to be subjected to this.

      • ericfromwestchester says:

That’s ridiculous- who cares about UFL football? Why do they get to destroy CitiField?

  22. lindro says:

Ahhh nice to see the baseball super scouts in here have now decided argenis reyes cant hit major league pitching. .. same super scouts who last week were hoping luis castillo would take his time on the d.l.

    • Bogar says:

Just as there were plenty of ‘em who wanted to DFA Delgado earlier this season.

    • Gina says:

As far as I know major league scouts have the same opinion, hence why he was like 25 and still in the minors despite our second base needs.

    • nobeers says:

Its really true, ive never seen people flip flop the way people on this blog do. I mean, just a few months ago people on here wanted to release Perez, now he is the second coming. Three days ago people wanted to have Castillo stay in the minor leagues or whatever but now that Reyes is slumping a little they are open to the fact that Castillo is going to come back, even though he is hitting worse now in his rehab starts than he ever hit before going down. I dont get it.

Personally, id rather watch young players stink because you can at least justify it based on the fact that they are learning.

  23. The Flash Man says:

how about we trade Castillo to the D’Backs for a reliever like Micah Owings? He could be our long man/middle guy. They need a 2B since the O-Dog is out for the year, right?

Why is no one suggesting this trade?

  24. nyj01827 says:

The best idea I heard was from Gary Cohen and the other announcers which is to start Johan Santana in the 3rd inning. Or basically, after whenever the pitcher comes up. It’s a good strategy because you’d be able to use a pinch hitter (especially with the luxury of 3 catchers) to start the game. Than from there, you’re basically guaranteeing Johan would have the stuff to get through the following 6 or 7 innings. You could bat Endy Chavez or Luis Castillo ninth and use them as a like a bonus lead off hitter while leaving Brian Schneider/Ramon Castro batting 8th. The Mets wouldn’t have to depend on the bullpen to get them through games as much. The strategy also works out better than with most pitcher’s because Johan’s a decent hitter for a pitcher and is lefty and will see mostly right-hander’s.
