Read: Sheffield Put On Waivers
By Brandon Eddy - Aug 12, 2008 5:49 pm

According to ESPN.com, ‘a major league source’ is reporting that the Tigers have placed Gary Sheffield on waivers.

Teams have until Thursday afternoon to claim Sheffield, or if he clears waivers, he can be traded to any of the other 29 teams.

Sheffield, who is batting .219 with 10 HR and 33 RBI in 76 games, has one year remaining on his contract at $14 million.

…i know sheffield is not the middle relief help the Mets need right now but he is definitely the right-handed outfield bat we need in the lineup…if there is a time to pick up sheffield, it is when he has something to prove and i say take a shot…although the following year price tag worries me…

This would be playing with fire.

The man seems done to me.

If this were the last year on his contract, it might be worth the gamble…but no way do we want to deal with this ahole next year.

He is now on the verge of whining his way out of an unprecedented 7th city…Milwaukee, San Diego, Florida, Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, and Detroit. Congrats, Gary.

I don’t know if Sheff is done or not. At his age it’s possible that the incredible bat speed is no longer there. And if that’s the case the Mets shouldn’t touch him. But I do notice that you place more emphasis on image and personality than winning. I guess none of Sheff’s teams ever went to the playoffs. Would you be happier if the Mets signed the Mormon Tabernacle Choir?

What? where did I put “emphasis” on anything?

Guy is washed up, and he’s always been a malcontent. Next.

    .219 10 HRs 33 RBI.. YES… We need another washed up outfielder…..

  4. stickguy says:

there was a piece in the Phila. paper today on Sheffield. Supposedly he is incapable of playing the OF since he can’t throw at all due to his shoulder. So bascially, he is 100% DH, or an emergency OF at best.

At 39…he’s a baby compared to Alou, so you know Omar is monitoring this situation…..

  6. 911nafstem says:

He dissed the Mets last time there was a rumor the Yanks might trade him here and threatened not to play. Fck this guy

  7. ASod1975 says:

And I also recall a time where he wanted to come to the Mets (I’m thinking it’s when he ended up in Atlanta when he was disgruntled with the Dodgers). He’s Doc Gooden’s nephew, blah blah blah…The guy talks out of both sides of his mouth all the time.

    Thank you , but no.

  9. D in Ben Lomond says:

    rather have bonds…

There’s really no difference between the two. Both took steroids and lied about it. Both are self made martyrs. Both treat others like crap and then cry foul when they have to deal with the consequences from that behavior.

  10. Giuseppe Franco our next GM says:

I rather have felipe alou out there

  11. Absolutely not. By no means. No way. Uh-uh. NO!!!

Are you out of your mind? Sheffield? You want a disgruntled, selfish player, who has another $14M left to be brought into this team? Oh, plus he s**ks to boot.

If we didn’t want Manny on this team AND HE’S STILL GOOD, why would we want Sheffield. Looks, left field is not an issue right now. Murphy is raking, Evans is helping. Church will be back next week, which allows Tatis to also play left.

We are trying to get rid of old player with bad contracts. Why take on another one?

  13. Prince Ollie says:

i don’t care about “clubhouse poison” or the history of steroid use. the guy shouldn’t be on the team because he cannot, CANNOT, contribute. he’s old and broken. he is not even fit to DH this year. possibly after some rehabilitation he will have some value, but not for the stretch run.

  14. Prince Ollie says:

and if anyone’s keeping score, that’s two awful ideas posted by the writers of Mets Blog today. maybe we can pick up sheffield and use him as our first inning reliever.

  15. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

    Brandon,

I like to harp on the fact that the Mets are a big market team and can take on high priced guys, but taking on Sheffield is probably a bad idea. He can’t play the outfield at all anymore, he’s physically unable to throw. Every time they put him out there he gets hurt and has to go back to the DH route. Tack on the fact that he would cost $14 mil next year which is enough it might screw us from going after someone else. He has almost as much baggage as Bonds (jerk, steroids, etc).

He has hit a homer while I was typing this, but it doesn’t change much. The Tigers would have to chip in ~$15 mil for this year and next for the Mets to have any interest at all. If the Tigers helped that much he would be a nice bat to come off the bench, but that’s about it.

They may as well just bring in Bonds who would need a deal extending into 2009.

  16. bkfitz says:

I’d rather Barry Bonds. He’s everything Gary Sheffield is now but can still hit.
