I'd rather Barry Bonds. He's everything Gary Sheffield is now but can still hit.

Guy is washed up, and he's always been a malcontent. Next.

Brandon,

I like to harp on the fact that the Mets are a big market team and can take on high priced guys, but taking on Sheffield is probably a bad idea. He can't play the outfield at all anymore, he's physically unable to throw. Every time they put him out there he gets hurt and has to go back to the DH route. Tack on the fact that he would cost $14 mil next year which is enough it might screw us from going after someone else. He has almost as much baggage as Bonds (jerk, steroids, etc).

He has hit a homer while I was typing this, but it doesn't change much. The Tigers would have to chip in ~$15 mil for this year and next for the Mets to have any interest at all. If the Tigers helped that much he would be a nice bat to come off the bench, but that's about it.

They may as well just bring in Bonds who would need a deal extending into 2009.

Yep, none of his teams ever went to the playoffs. He is a cancer. Now let’s all hold hands and sing Kumbaya.

If he’s physically done the Mets should not touch him. Any other reason is silly.

and if anyone's keeping score, that's two awful ideas posted by the writers of Mets Blog today. maybe we can pick up sheffield and use him as our first inning reliever.

i don't care about "clubhouse poison" or the history of steroid use. the guy shouldn't be on the team because he cannot, CANNOT, contribute. he's old and broken. he is not even fit to DH this year. possibly after some rehabilitation he will have some value, but not for the stretch run.

I don’t know if Sheff is done or not. At his age it’s possible that the incredible bat speed is no longer there. And if that’s the case the Mets shouldn’t touch him. But I do notice that you place more emphasis on image and personality than winning. I guess none of Sheff’s teams ever went to the playoffs. Would you be happier if the Mets signed the Mormon Tabernacle Choir?

Are you out of your mind? Sheffield? You want a disgruntled, selfish player, who has another $14M left to be brought into this team? Oh, plus he s**ks to boot.

If we didn't want Manny on this team AND HE'S STILL GOOD, why would we want Sheffield. Looks, left field is not an issue right now. Murphy is raking, Evans is helping. Church will be back next week, which allows Tatis to also play left.

We are trying to get rid of old player with bad contracts. Why take on another one?
