Note: I Agree with Jimmy Rollins
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 14, 2008 10:40 am

The Mets and Phillies are tied for first place in the National League East, with the exact-same record, with 42 games left to be played.

Jimmy Rollins, when asked if Philadelphia is can be a tough town to play in, during his recent appearance on FOX’s The Best Damn Sports Show Period:

“It can be, yeah.  There are times, like, it’s one of those cities…I might catch some flack for saying this, but, you know, they’re front-runners. When you’re doing good, they’re on your side. When you’re doing bad, they’re completely against you.”

i knew rollins and i would eventually agree on something

Naturally, according to a report on MLB.com, “Radio talk shows (in Philadelphia) have fielded calls from fans offended by the comments, which are similar to previous comments made by Rollins and other athletes about the city’s passionate fans.”

  1. Mr. Bananagrabber says:

Unfortunately, a lot of Mets fans are exactly the same way.

  2. krispy644 says:

hey Phillies fans, you are hearing this from your beloved MVP lol

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      at least he is honest.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

and if you dont believe so…ask delgado this season…cause what rollins said i think applys in ny as well

        • Or ask Heilman any day. He doesn’t even get a chance anymore.

        • Bogar says:

Quite a few boos — yes, boos — rained down on Flushing’s new hope, providing an unaccustomed welcome to what once might have been a grand debut. This, for Santana, did not feel like home.

“If they boo, that’s fine,” Santana said. “That’s a history they got from not being so good, I guess.”

        • I know. He gets booed when he jogs in. Booed when he throws Ball 1. Booed when he exits. Good thing there is no bullpen cam in the stadium. He would get booed every time he walked past it.

          Is booed a word?

        • DjDeF says:

The booing on Santana was way overblown by the papers. Give that up. It was very few that happened to be in the right place to be heard. If you were at that game as many have posted and spoken about on FAN there is no chance he was booed as badly as the papers said.

  3. dave27 says:

Can you be front-runners when your teams are almost never running in front?

  4. robmenna says:

SCUMBAGS, that’s how you sum up Philly fans in 1 word

    • phillygalfan says:

And clearly Matt, your blog isn’t exactly a love-fest when your mets are doing poorly, come on…..

      • giuseppe franco_procede says:

Phillygalfan…but you have to admit while NY is the same exact way…we own up to it. If Philly can’t own up to it then what does that make them? Hypocrites?

      • napes22 says:

Well this blog is a realistic look at the team and how it is performing. But as fans we shouldn’t be booing when the team struggles. That’s called being a front runner.

        • Certain players deserve to be booed. Vince Coleman, Brett Saberhagen, Bobby Bonilla. Not for their lack of performance, but for their lack of hustle. I was disgusted with Mets fans for the relentless booing of Kaz Matsui. At least he tried. There were plenty of other guys on those Mets teams that deserved to be booed off the field, but for whatever reason, he caught the wrath.

Lack of hustle and effort is what deserves the boos. Lack of production, not so much.

        • phillygalfan says:

You know I’m a fan of your posts, and that is the exact reason why Rollins is getting ribbed… I go to most games and this guy has been playing like he’s in a coma this season. His play is inconsistent, his fielding is good, but you have to make a contribution offensively, and he hasn’t. He pretty much slept through last Thursday’s loss to the Marlins…. That’s why his comments are galling.. If it were Victorino making that remark, I don’t know that I’d be as offended, because he busts it up every game.

    • I have to agree with you.

  5. EliPorter says:

    hahahaahaaahhaahhaaaahahah

  6. Prismo says:

    J-Roll is my hero!

  7. metties1 says:

    Waaaaaaaaahhhh!

  8. phillygalfan says:

Ok – so I find the comments interesting coming from a player who is suffering from such offense malaise, that maybe a trade to St. Louis, where the fans are “nicer” may be appropriate. I’m not an obnoxious fan, who berates opposing team’s fans at games. I’m also a fan who sticks w/ their team whether they’re in 1st or last place. What this team needs to do is actually go out there and play allegedly 1st place baseball, and not worry about their fans not being supportive enough, which – by the attendance record at CBP, is clearly not the case…

    • beltran the warrior says:

deal with it even your players think your team is scum, deal with it. now off to bear guzzler with you.

    • iamatwork says:

Yeah but none of you showed up for about a decade, hence trading Schilling and Rolen.

Oh, and you’ve drawn about 500k fewer people than we have – and you have NO competition whatsoever. There is nothing to do in Philly other than go to sporting events. (And don’t say go to the NJ shore – we’re just as close)

      • phillygalfan says:

Again, don’t generalize the fans… Have always shown up and will continue. And yes there is the shore, but we do work here, not just spend the whole day on the blog, lol..

    • I respect you for coming on here and not being obnoxious. I also respect you for speaking of J-Roll’s offensive malaise. That made me happy.

  9. iamatwork says:

2 years ago he said that people in Philly “don’t show a lot of intelligence, sometimes.” He’s not smart at all and he seems to think he is. Good job Jimmy! Last season was an abberation, I hope you have fun in the hall of pretty good!

  10. batsinthepelfrey says:

any team with a high payroll, big expectations and a large fan base can be characterized that way. if only because of a vocal minority that rants and raves when things are going poorly. mets fans who were ready to jump ship all year are as bad as any. unfortunately it makes every one look stupid when they do it.

  11. CaseStreet says:

    I like Rollins.

  12. yukonj88 says:

“Jimmy Rollins, when asked if Philadelphia is can be a tough town to play in…”

I have no idea what that sentence means. Craigslist has a ton of editors for hire.

    • ToastyJoe says:

“I have no idea what that sentence means.”

      I think you do.

    • Prismo says:

Really? You can’t figure it out?

Anyone with average intelligence could deduce that be either removing the word “is” or the words “can be”, the sentence magically makes sense.

Try that next time before you make a whiny sarcastic post.

  13. AngryFan says:

Rollns is right. And that’s how it should be. Everyone calls St Louis the best baseball town, but those people are a bunch of sheep whom I can’t respect.

If you stink, you should be get booed. WInners get cheered, losers get piled on.

    • Bogar says:

Cards fans boo as well. Just less often and not as loud.

    • Boscov says:

Just another example of what’s wrong with this pathetic city of New York. If you stink you should get booed. For a 14 year old I would be fine with it but this is how adult fans act at games and it’s pathetic. These guys go out there and you don’t think they’re trying? They’re playing baseball for a living! I mean seriously it’s fun to go out and play this game and because they don’t get the job done you boo? It’s miserable honestly. A miserable, negative city and I can’t wait to get outta here.

      • Peter says:

Holy crap . . . I must have multiple personality dissorder and posted undar another name. That’s pretty much how I feel!

    • rogasm says:

I am in STL and trust me, these fans are rediculous. The only reason they got the “Best Fans” tag is because the hometown sports magazine (SportingNews) annointed them with it. I am sick of going to games here having to hear about that BS. My inlaws and wife are diehard Cardinals fans, and there are many around here, however they have a so called elitest attitude about them because of that BS article.

      • LongJohnMaine says:

The home crowds at Busch Stadium give me the creeps. It’s like the fans are zombies. I remember how dead they were during the two World Series games when Boston swept them in 2004. I thought to myself, “Cardinals fans are supposed to be the best fans in baseball? Please.”

  14. yukonj88 says:

Thanks for the tip. But which one is it? They each mean something different. My sub-average intelligence just doesn’t let me know these things.

    • khmustache says:

      “reply to this comment”

    • kingman 26 says:

Your post was rude, ridiculous, and completely unnecessary….and learning the purpose of the “reply to this comment” button might be good for you too…..

      • yukonj88 says:

How is it rude, ridiculous and completely unecessary?
Every day I check this site and find sloppy errors. The only reason I say something is because I’m sick of traditional journalists discrediting blogs like this one because of said mistakes. I only say what I say in hopes that someone starts paying more attention to the content being published.

        • kingman 26 says:

You said you had no idea what the post means…of course you do, you are just being arrogant and childish for the fun of it.

This blog, in case you did not notice, is not run like a newspaper with one printing a day, or a news program with certain deadlines. Matt posts what he finds out right away, to try and stay current, as new stories keep coming up constantly.

If he held every post for fact-checking and proofreading, other critics would come out and bitch about how he is late with a story.

Sure, he made a little error in a sentence of a story he was surely eager to post. Saying you have no idea what it means when of course you do is silly, and the comment about editors is just rude and comical—start your own extremely successful blog!!

        • yukonj88 says:

I understand your point but a quick re-read should spot most of the silly errors.

I also realize that this is not run like a traditional media outlet. However, once it has SNY and Geico attached to it, it should be held to a higher standard of journalism. I’m those two major corporations have no problem with careless mistakes. Come on now.

        • yukonj88 says:

          I’m sure*

        • ToastyJoe says:

          Isn’t that Matt’s problem?

  15. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

Hey Jimmy, if you ran out a fly ball maybe you wouldn’t get booed..but then again.. this is Philly we are talking about, The Armpit of America

  16. Ceetar says:

“Naturally, according to a report on MLB.com, “Radio talk shows (in Philadelphia) have fielded calls from fans offended by the comments”

..who then wanted to discuss the Eagles chances this year..

  17. Darth Manuel says:

We are not taking the Media into account. The media plays the most important role in this entire situation. When you have talk show programs and tabloid newspapers that constantly spin negative views on everything you tend to get a more negative fan base. If the Mike and Chris didn’t spend 5 hours a day promoting the negative spin and beat writers weren’t constantly looking for the next story, I believe the fans would be more patient. To me it starts with the Media.

    • kingman 26 says:

True, true, and true some more. Nowadays, the 24-hour/zillion channel media cycle is nothing more than a ceaseless fountain of spewing negativity, to try and gain the highest volume of lowest-common-denominator viewers/listeners as possible.

ESPN is the leader—when there is some sort of controversy, it is all they show, nonstop, for days. Sure, some highlights are mixed in, but how many times do we need to hear about the ridiculous Favre situation already? All day, for weeks, in July! Prince Fielder hit his teammate once, and I feel like I have seen it 8000 times.

And yes, talk radio and ridiculous shows like Loudmouths do constantly fire off a stream of know-it-all negativity, which certainly encourages more people to think negatively.

      • beltran the warrior says:

to be honest, i’ve had no problem with francesa the last few days since he’s been solo. he’s been pretty fair regarding the mets and has been killing the yankees especially hankenstein.

  18. DjDeF says:

Philly fans need to pipe down. Chase Utley told a story of FAN a few months back how in his first game in the MLB he hit a grand slam. Later on in the game the Phillies were winning by 10 runs or something crazy like that and he struck out and Utley got booed. I am sorry but if that doesn’t sum up a fan base I do not know what does.

Met fans appreciate the young players and get very easily attached to them. See LMillz who got great ovations when he came up despite struggling.

  19. Darth Manuel says:

Imagine if Tony Larussa was the manager of the Yankees when he was found drunk and asleep at a stop light. It would still be a story. It would always be on the mind of the fans because of how much it is talked about. If Manny played for the Mets and wouldn’t cut his hair or even come late for the ninth inning..

IMO if we ever want sanity in this city we have to start with getting rid of Mike and Chris. Then limit the writers.. We have people so caught up in these talk shows that they manifest issues just to get on these programs.

  20. lewchr says:

with 42 games left, how many wins are people thinking is it going to take to win the division?

  21. I’m gonna say 87-89 total wins will get it done.

    • Then we will get to play Milwaukee in the first round and get CC and Sheets. Ouch.

      • MIlwaukee is gonna be extremely tough in the postseason, as long as their pitching stays healthy. But the Cubs have plenty of pitching too, so that could be a great NLCS.

Lets hope the Mets put a crinkle in that though.

    • murdertron3000 says:

PECOTA projections have the NL East winner averaging 89.6 games, so I will go out on a statistical limb and say it will take 89 or 90.

  22. nysportsfan16 says:

I agree with Long John Maine. 90 doesn’t seem that far away. That would mean playing 619 ball the rest of the way

  23. Phillies in NYC says:

How can Philly fans be front-runners when the teams they love and support continually let them down, most notably the phillies who ave ONE championship in 125 years of existence…..time for Rollins to hit the road after this heinous comment……Mets fans have NO ROOM to speak on being front-runners

    As always….Let’s Go Phils!

    • LongJohnMaine says:

Hahaha I love it when Philly fans turn on their own players. I’d say good luck in September but the Giants are going to mop the floor with the doormats of the NFC East.

    • therealsince86 says:

Because of that losing culture you are by nature a front runner. It’s Phillies are winning yay, Oh wait never mind when’s FB start. For true Mets fans they are wearing Mets Jersey’s to the Jets games.

    • DjDeF says:

      shut up

    • Dirtysanchez says:

well at least you are making rollins point..

    • mouserdz says:

Front-runners grow up to be Yankee fans.

  24. Phillies in NYC says:

I would also like to say to atlantasnumber1metsfan that Queens very well could be the armpit (cesspool ?sp) of America……Guess that’s why you’re in Atlanta, huh

  25. phillygalfan says:

Ok, let’s not stoop to the low level… I have some very good friends in Queens.. the nimrod that made that statement obviously goes to philly less frequently than he does the shower, hence his confusion on the stench…

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

All i’m saying is that all the new stadiums in the world couldnt make Philly resemble anything close to NY or even ATL…

  26. metsfan1 says:

Amazing how last year they loved when Rollins made his “we are the team to beat” comment. Now they hate him for telling it as it is. As a former Philly college student, I can tell you that the only team that the city supports year in and out are the Eagles. If the Phillies fall off, CBB will be empty.

  27. therealsince86 says:

HA, LOL, The Phillies are blaming the Allstar game on Lidge sucking since the break. Don’t you think it might be that he is returning to his norm?

  28. ToastyJoe says:

Cardinals fans who blindly cheer anything their team does are considered the “best fans”? That’s like saying Americans who don’t question their own government are the best citizens. (Although sadly, there are people who believe that).

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

      Well said Toasty

    • LongJohnMaine says:

I’ll copy and paste my post from above:

The home crowds at Busch Stadium give me the creeps. It’s like the fans are zombies. I remember how dead they were during the two World Series games when Boston swept them in 2004. I thought to myself, “Cardinals fans are supposed to be the best fans in baseball? Please.”

I’m telling you, the home crowds at Busch Stadium are like 50,000 on Prozac. It’s bizarre, and creepy.

  29. Doctor Suarez says:

I lived in Philly for four years when I was in college, and I’ll give Philly fans this: They may get on their team’s back when the team is underperforming, but Philly fans show up. No matter how bad, hopeless, or downright crummy their team is, they show up every year and pack the house. I’ll take them over the Atlanta No-Shows any day of the year.

  30. Joebaby says:

    Oh ‘F’ Jimmy Rollins.

  31. krispy644 says:

    now everyone likes Rollins now?

    bandwagons!! lol

Rollins is an amazing player, but I cant stand him (part of the reason being he is on the Phillies lol). but I love his talent and leadership as a player. this year he is just lost.

  32. MauiMetsFan says:

Rollins, like so many other players and fans just does not get it. This front runner term is so misunderstood. God forbid we turn in Mid west fans who come to games and cheer for their team no matter what. Like those suckers on the north side of Chicago.
I will always be a Mets fan. However, if the Mets stink I will not go to as many games and when I do go to games I will tell them they stink.
To me supporting a losing team, is telling ownership that we don’t care if you win or lose. As long as you try. What incentive does that give ownership to change. The is the only recourse a fan has is to hit them in there wallet.
