postGame: Mets 2 Pirates 1
By Mike Nichols - Aug 15, 2008 9:47 pm

The first place Mets (66–56) defeated the Pirates (55–67) by the score of 2 to 1 tonight in PNC Park.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from tonight’s game, go to SNY.tv.

Mike Pelfrey was stellar tonight scattering seven hits over seven scoreless inning, while not walking a batter for the third time this season, to become the Mets first 11-game winner this season.

Duaner Sanchez started the eighth inning giving up a lead-off homerun to Jack Wilson.  However, Pedro Feliciano picked him up to keep the Mets in the lead.

Aaron Heilman got the job done to pick up the save in the ninth, but I’m starting to get confused by what Jerry Manuel says and then does.  Earlier this week, he said he needed to find a better situation than the ninth inning to pitch Aaron Heilman, but then pitches him the ninth inning again tonight.

Speaking of which, has anyone seen Eddie Kunz lately or was he placed in witness protection?  It’s pointless to keep him on the roster if you’re not going to pitch him.

After getting off to a good start in the first inning by scoring two runs on two well executed hit and runs, the Mets offense went to sleep in typical fashion the rest of the game.

Interesting to know Keith Hernandez is a Collective Soul fan.  I expected him to be toe-tapping to Huey Lewis and the News.

Not sure what the second base umpire was looking at when Jose Reyes was caught stealing with one out in the fifth.  Looked as if the umpire was a bit out of position.  Good to see Jerry Manuel come out an protect Reyes from getting ejected.  I’m thinking the former manager would have sat on his hands in that spot.

Beautiful throw by Carlos Beltran to gun down Adam LaRoche at home plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.  For all the grief Beltran receives for his streakiness offensively, it’s pretty clear he is the best center fielder in the National League.

What was the “Hello, My Name Is” name tag looking patch the Pirates were wearing on the jerseys tonight?

Speaking of the Pirates, I don’t what it is, but games against the Pirates in Pittsburgh always bore me.  Perhaps it’s because they haven’t been relevant for 16 years.

The Mets continue their four game set with the Pirates in Pittsburgh tomorrow at 7:10 with Pedro Martinez (3-3) facing off against Zach Duke (4-10).

    • QnsNative718 says:

A win is a win but I still have more confidence in Stevie Wonder as my dentist than Heilman saving a game. People are so funny to say “Well arent you eating your words now?” No. He is SUPPOSSED to succeed in that opportunity. The odds and numbers are in his favor. Someone made the comment that this save by Heilman doesnt change anything because he’ll win one then blow the next two. Its simple, Heilman DOES NOT have the mental guts to be put in those sort of situations. I know what his numbers were like last yr and the yr before that, but guess what, things change. Players eventually lose their touch. I really hope this “faith and confidence” in Heilman by Jerry does not bite us in the a$$ down the road.. Call me Debbie Downer but remember I am a Life long Met fan and this is New York. Misery is my middle name. No its not, its really Alexander but you get the point..

      • Ellen says:

And what was Duaner “suppossed” to do in his opportunity tonite? Not succeed? He did well, then.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

Well said, Ellen. All relievers *are* supposed to hold leads but, as we’ve become all too familiar with, it doesn’t always happen. Heilman wasn’t perfect tonight–that 4-pitch walk was ridiculous–but he got the job done, and with relative ease. He deserves credit for that. Especially under the circumstances–he’s been struggling, this very team just beat the snot out of him, he’s probably overworked, and he is not typically a closer.

        • QnsNative718 says:

I heard Jerry’s reasoning behind throwing in Heilman and I have to say Jerry is a smart baseball man. Where Willie wouldve gone with a “feeling”, Jerry went with the numbers and determined Heilman was the best fit given the batters he was going to face. I stand corrected. Thats not to say I wont have my barf bag ready every time #48 comes out the pen..

  2. Gary Busey says:

I’m thinking the former manager would have sat on his hands in that spot.

lol, not using his name makes me imagine willie as voldemort.

    • khmustache says:

      gary busey reads harry potter?!!

    • signupcall says:

In any case, I would have to beg to differ – Willie 100% would have come out to argue that call, but wouldn’t have gotten thrown out of course… This was an unnecessary cheap shot.

      • MetsFan1976 says:

I disagree. It was extremely rare for Willie to come out and argue–whether he just disagreed with the call, or was trying to protect his players (the latter of which practically never happened). It was precisely that sort of lifelessness that infected the entire clubhouse.

        • JavaJoe says:

He would have come out for that just to save Jose. Not to argue the call…..he never argues the call he walks out and has that look on his face, the frown and asks..”You sure?” which extracts the reply “Yes”.

          End of argument.

Take note of the players from now on. If they feel wronged by a called strike they look into the dugout. Previously they were on their own now Jerry has their back. Right wrong or indifferent Jerry will come out of the dugout and blast the ump.

      • m00kie says:

“unnecessary cheap shot” is what I was thinking too. Willie would frequently come out to defend his players, he just drew the line before he got tossed from the game. He had a lot of flaws, so use one of the true ones, please. Nichols seemed a little surly through the whole recap, in fact (I guess because of the boring pirates?). A little too surly for a 4 game winning streak, I’d say.

this comment too “but I’m starting to get confused by what Jerry Manuel says and then does” is a strawman. Another thing he said was that he wasn’t going to throw Kunz out for his first save in a one run game that puts him in a position to choke it up.

I’m still trying to figure out the Huey Lewis comment.

        • ridethesnake says:

You are completing his thought — to say he came out frequently but then did less to protect his players than Manuel does is the same thing as figuratively sitting on his hands — because he would not have argued, he would have come out and separated them, looked around, and not argued, making the player look like he had no business arguing. Jerry makes the player feel like he is not the only one who thought maybe the call was wrong.

Willie claimed he didn’t see Delgado’s HR vs the Yanks and thus didn’t argue, which made the players that argued feel on an island. Luckily Willie’s bench coach stood up for them.

        • m00kie says:

did jerry get thrown out last night?

        • ridethesnake says:

Nope. Good point. There was no need for it, he just defended his player with some gusto. Willie was always looked very uncomfortable ‘arguing’ with umps to defend his players, and it just came across as less, to me at least. I can understand a player feeling more defended by last night than by the past. I respect if you feel differently, and I’m sure there are some players on the team that played just as hard for both managers too.

        • m00kie says:

willie looked uncomfortable doing lots of things. I was a staunch Willie supporter, but have jumped, full body onto the jerry manuel bandwagon!!

      • ghobot says:

yeah i agree, that was unnecessary. the broadcast booth has been doing crap like that too much lately too. we get it, you didnt like randolph, MOVE ON.

  3. khmustache says:

    whew…boring game for 8 innings

    • PedroMANIA says:

if you thought the game was boring trying watching the Pirates telecast… I swear they were asleep half the time.

I suppose that is the nature of being a terrible ballclub for a long time however.

One thing is for sure – nobody beats the boys at SNY

    • TheIcon says:

How is that game boring? I’ll take a game like that than a 12-11 game any day.

      • PedroMANIA says:

Yeah I actually thought it was a good game too though the Pittsburg announcers tried to ruin the fun

      • MetsFan1976 says:

I prefer a pitcher’s duel to a slugfest, too, but I also felt this game was fairly boring until the end. For whatever reason, it seemed like the low scoring was due to poor hitting, not good pitching. Although, I must say, there was some awfully good defense tonight…that was fun to watch!

  4. MetsFan4Decades says:

Nice defense, BP got it done, good outing my Pelfrey.
Not much offense but it got the jog done. We’ll take it !

  7. Nightlife says:

    ……..waiting for that heilmansux guy.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

He’s still trying to get his foot out of his mouth….

    • BlueCapsOnly says:

I’m not him but Heilman sucks..when you blow 2 out of every 3 you suck

      • Nightlife says:

Yes. But, wanting a guy to fail is a whole different thing.

      • TheIcon says:

He’s only had 4 chances!!! I’d like to see you try and do his job.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

As silly as the “Heilman sucks” comments are, the “I’d like to see you do better” argument is not an effective response. Unless somebody here is a professional pitcher, there is no reason to expect them to do well as a pitcher in an MLB game. Heilman, on the other hand, is a well-paid professional who we have every reason to expect to do well against MLB hitters.

        • Mingo says:

I’d like to see Heilman try to do my job.

          That’s a stupid argument.

        • m00kie says:

          I still say heilman sucks.

I’m glad he got the job done, but in a sleepy city like Pittsburgh, he still lost his composure when it came down to 1 out left, he got wild walked a guy on 4 nowhere near close pitches and was a good meatball from blowing it.

Let’s see him in a game vs the phillies, or a game at shea before we pronounce him “clutch”.

      • MetsFan1976 says:

Heilman certainly doesn’t suck, but he *is* inconsistent. Keep in mind, in June and most of July, he was practically unhittable–no blowing 2 out of every 3 games then.

I wasn’t comfortable with him pitching in the ninth, either, though. It was very nice of Manuel to give him that vote of confidence, but it wasn’t the right time for it. Thankfully, it all worked out well.

  9. zwnyr11 says:

did anyone else notice that pelf was only throwing high 80s and up to about 91 tonight. he was still very effective but he has been in the 93-95 range almost all season. his fastball didn’t seem to have as much life on it today. I am thrilled with the results….that is just an observation

    • therealsince86 says:

It’s going to happen. It’s the rookie wall. Get ready for a few bad outings and then he will be fine.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

I didn’t hear everything that was said, but in the post-game show, they spoke to Pelf, and he said something about not being able to strike people out today. For those who caught everything, was he talking about trying to let them hit the ball, because he didn’t feel he had the strikeout working for him today? If so, maybe that would explain a decrease in velocity–perhaps he was just taking something off, so they would put the ball in play.

  10. BlueCapsOnly says:

Kerry Wood isn’t making it look easy in Miami

  11. D-Day says:

great win tonight. would have liked to see our offense continue from the nats series but whatever, way to go pelf for holding it down!. sorta like us playing early and the phillies playing later. it puts the ball in there court and the pressure on them after they know we won! LETS GO METS!!!

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Definitely a great job by Big Pelf and the pen to hold the lead (though I could’ve done without Duaner giving me a scare like he did). Still, the pitchers can’t be expected to give up 0 or 1 runs every night. The offense needs to be able to score more than 2 runs against the likes of Jason Davis, John Grabow, and Craig Hansen. More often than not, that will come back to haunt you.

  12. Nate W. says:

    Luis Castillo in AA… 0-3, 2 K’s , 1 Error.

we just cant wait for his return…

    • D-Day says:

      4 years well spent omar!

    • khmustache says:

especially with how poorly argenis played tonight

    • BlueCapsOnly says:

If we put him on waivers do you think the Dbacks would take him if we offered to pay half his salary?

      • MetsFan1976 says:

I doubt it. As gimpy as Luis is, they probably believe that he won’t be as helpful as their current options. Between missing games with injuries, and having his play hindered because of injuries, they are probably right.

    • X-Man says:

What’s he like, 1-27? In A ball and AA!! LOL.

Can wait for the “Savior” to come up and save the season for us with his ‘Slappy” hitting and lazy fielding. YAAA!

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Well, at least the Mets seem to be waiting to bring Luis and Marlon back on September 1st, so they don’t have to send anyone down to open up roster spots. I wonder if Luis actually had a “family emergency”? Even if he did, the Mets certainly seem to be taking advantage of it, and using it as an excuse to keep him off the active roster as long as possible.

    • Mingo says:

Remember, this was one of Willie’s guys.
I don’t think you necessarily need to blame Omar entirely for the Castillo signing. Willie wanted him.
And also, Willie had Marlon Anderson playing where the rookies are playing. At least Jerry has the confidence in young guys to give them a shot.

  17. ravin108 says:

You are bored by Pittsburgh because their is no attitude from the fans nor the ball park. The fans don’t scare anyone.. in fact the minor league game I was at last night had more attitude with 160 dogs in the stadium for a promotion but to go along with that, the park is more your fan friendly central park-like type of place than the scary, intimidating fenway park

    • FlyingDadBomb34 says:

Not to mention how monotonous, mind-dulling, and shamefully homer the team’s announcers are. I’m surprised Matt that you haven’t gotten into that at all.

  18. X-Man says:

What’s wrong next year going with………..

    Santana
    Maine
    Pelfrey
    Perez
    Neise?

Everyone seems to think Perez is automatically out of here but I’m not so sure even if his agent is Borus.

    • therealsince86 says:

I don’t like depending on Niese for next season. I want innings. It’s a big help for the pen. Go get Perez and Garland or get a cheap innings guy. If Niese comes up and is ready then great. Can’t have too much pitching.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

It’s no guarantee that Ollie is gone next year, but it’s no lock he is back, either. Boras is notorious for getting his clients signed for the biggest contract, even if it isn’t the best situation for them–no hometown discounts, or the like. Plus, Boras or not, many players feel obligated, as union members, to go for the biggest deal, to push the numbers up for the colleagues–again, no hometown discounts, or the like.

      • MudvilleNine says:

Thats why I love Marty Brodeur and Scott Stevens. They signed for a lot less to stay at a place they loved to play and had a chance to win every year. They didnt care what the union said, and the union said quite a bit. They were not happy with them whatsoever.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

Keep in mind, though, that no other sport’s union is as strong as MLB’s. If they were, every sport would have astronomical salaries, guaranteed contracts, and no salary cap.

        • Mingo says:

Yeah, the NBA has crappy salaries.

        • mjg283 says:

Actually, the NBA has below-market value salaries. Which is precisely why LeBron might end up in Europe in 2010.

    • Nate W. says:

The only problem I have with Niese as your 5th starter is that there is no one to back them up anywhere in the organization. Unless you think we can somehow bring back Figgy, Armas, and Vargas and rely on them like this year, then they will be looking at Parnell as the only real call up option for next year. They need more depth. Niese in AAA would make great depth. Otherwise I think he would be fine as the 5th starter.

They also need a new pen, this one has gone rotten.

Dont know about anyone else, but I’m, just about ready to turn over 1B and LF to the kids and Tatis, no FA’s required for the starting 8. Lets the new GM concentrate on pitching only…

  19. Metsfan309 says:

this is a “bit” off-topic but remember those replica jerseys by Majestic that looked like the real deal? Where have they disappeared to? I’m trying to get a Pelfrey jersey but I don’t want to spend $250 and I don’t want to get the replica jersey.

    • khmustache says:

look on ebay dude…i found a really good beltran one for 45 bucks

    • BlueCapsOnly says:

what do you mean by “real deal” did they have the sleeve patch and proper lettering instead of the plain single layer blue crap?

      • Metsfan309 says:

they didn’t have the patch but they had the correct lettering.

      • BlueCapsOnly says:

Those probably come from the stadium, or the little stands around the stadium.

        • Metsfan309 says:

They used to have something similar online on majestic’s website but they disappeared…

        • BlueCapsOnly says:

I found a black Pelfrey one on Ebay, but don’t be fooled by what the guy says. What he is selling is a replica jersey that he letters and numbers himself. You can tell because the Majestic logo is on the wrong sleeve and there is no mlb logo on the back.

        • Metsfan309 says:

          I saw that too.

  20. PedroMANIA says:

off topic but the Pirates really need to keep it to one player named A. LaRoche

    • MetsFan1976 says:

I have to say, I really liked the stories Gary, Keith and Kevin were telling about the LaRoche brothers, and how excited they both were to play together for the first time ever. It was nice to hear.

      • PedroMANIA says:

I didn’t get the SNY feed… are these two really brothers?

        • MetsFan1976 says:

Absolutely. Adam is 4 years older than Andy, so they never got a chance to play on the same team at any level until now. Adam was quoted as saying that, when he looks across the diamond at Andy, he feels like he is in the backyard playing whiffleball. I liked that comment.

        • PedroMANIA says:

Oh wow, didn’t know that. I guess they can keep them both is they are related.

          Thanks for the info

  21. mr_crackovich says:

My man A. Reyes playing some good ball. Manuel and I know where it is at. Murphy also got another hit tonight. If the Mets are anything right now it is exciting.

    • The Slider says:

      A. Reyes is the Latino Wally Backman. Pesky.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Quite a heads-up defensive play by Argenis Reyes to start the 9th. Delgado really botched that play, and Argenis really stuck with it and perhaps saved the game. It could’ve been a completely different result if the leadoff runner got on there.

  22. 4eyeJoe says:

well … Pelfrey pitched a pretty good game even though he did not have his stuff tonight. topping out 92 mph, but was able to get ground balls when needed. nice back up play by A. Reyes on the misplay ball by Delgado. the offense went to sleep early again, the mets better avoid this type of thing as much as possible from now on.

  23. The Slider says:

    Anybody watching the Padres-Phillies game?

    • BlueCapsOnly says:

      yes….

P.S. is Maddux the only player you have seen who doesn’t wear a t shirt under his jersey

    • MetsFan1976 says:

By the way, I know the Mets just beat the Padres 2 out of 3 games at Shea, but I still think the Phils owe them for that 4 game sweep in San Diego…they need to beat those Phillies! 0 runs and 3 hits in 7 innings against old man Moyer is pathetic!

  24. MyaGirl says:

Nice win for the Mets tonight! Make it 4 in a row for the amazins.
Our pitching staff 1-5 is the best in the NL.

  25. DFolk18 says:

These guys are winning so I can’t really complain, but something has got to happen with the lack of scoring in late innings. The outline of a typical Mets game involves scoring in the early innings accompanied by good starting pitching, followed by no offense and a shaky bullpen. These types of games won’t win championships. This may work out against the Nationals and Pirates (well, sometimes), but playoff-caliber teams will take advantage.

    • MyaGirl says:

Well we have two major components coming back in the next couple of weeks. Ryan Church and Billy Wagner!!

That should help shouldn’t it? Maybe for the 1st time all season, this team could be 100% healthy.

      • BlueCapsOnly says:

Don’t forget, the longer castillo remains “unhealthy” the healthier the big club will be.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

Marlon Anderson, too. It appears that the Mets are going to at least try to hold off on bringing both of them back until the rosters expand, though. Of course, as good as that sounds, I find it hard to believe that the Mets would just sit Luis on the bench, once he comes back. I have no doubt that he won’t start every day, but it will probably be far too regular. And, no matter what, I hope he doesn’t cause trouble because he is not playing as much as he would like.

      • MetsFan1976 says:

As much as I hope Church is better, and that he can come back and contribute, we cannot count on him. You never known when his post-concussion syndrome will rear its ugly head.

    • gomets6091 says:

while I agree with you, don’t forget that last night they scored 4 runs late to make it a laugher…

      • MetsFan1976 says:

That’s one game, though. They have to tack on runs on a much more consistent basis.

But, for now, I’ll take the win!

  26. SlidingCatch says:

I’m with Mike, is Kunz’s only job on this team to carry the pink bag of candies out to the bullpen? Jerry does know that Kunz is available to pitch does he?

    • The Slider says:

By carrying the pink bag, Kunzy is contributing to the team in significant ways. If he didn’t carry the pink bag, then another bullpen pitcher would have to carry it, which would make that pitcher a little more tired, which would make him pitch not as effective, which would cause the next bullpen pitcher to have to pitch more, which, in turn, would cause a further strain on the bullpen . . . like a domino effect.

So, you see, Kunz is contributing mightily by carrying the pink bag.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

I agree with Mike about that, too. I thought Kunz was supposed to be the closer until Wagner returned, and I thought that was a good idea, given the bullpen’s recent struggles. But, even if Manuel doesn’t really want to use Kunz as a closer, he can still use him in middle relief!

  27. MyaGirl says:

And can we please get off Carlos Beltran’s back. Think about this, with Melky Cabrera being sent down by the Yankees…
They could have traded him, Kennedy, and Hughes for Johan.

I keep saying this but thank you Brian Cashman!!! Because of you both Carlos Beltran and Johan Santana fell in our laps. Don’t you wish you had both of these guys now?

  28. Dafatone80 says:

Heilman’s 3/4 in save opportunities since Billy went down, right?

    That’s not bad.

Now yes, Heilman is not having a good season. But 3/4 isn’t terrible. It’s too small a sample to tell if he can actually close or not.

    • The Slider says:

Aaron has had an uneven season, but when asked to take on more responsibility, he’s now done ok (3/4 as you point out).

We really need Aaron to finish up strong. Sanchez’s arm is still too weak to count on every game or even every other game.

I really would like the Mets to give him a shot at the rotation next year. I think he’ll thrive there.

      • MetsFan1976 says:

There is no reason to think Heilman will succeed as a starter. He has had a good deal of success as a reliever (with significant periods of stinkiness thrown in, granted), but his time as a starter made it pretty clear that, 2 or 3 times through the lineup, and he will lose his effectiveness. He just cannot pitch to the same hitters so many times consecutively.

        • The Slider says:

When he first was a starter, he came from “over the top,” which was not the way he pitched in college (which was 3/4, like he does now). Peterson, in one of his “successes,” got Heilman to go back to 3/4 at spring training ‘06 (I believe – he and Bannister competed for the 5th spot in the rotation, and while they both pitched great that spring, Heilman pitched better even though Bannister was given the 5 spot).

So, for the above reasons, I think Heilman could succeed as a starter. He has great stuff – 94-96 mph on the fastball; a very good change; and a decent slider. As a no. 5 starter, he would be great.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

He pitched well in spring because he never had to go deep in a game. Once he had to regularly face a lineup 3 times in the same game, it would be a different story. It always was when he was a starter. And, for the record, he did pitch in the “Don Drysdale” 3/4 style as a starter in the majors. That’s how he was able to pitch halfway decently enough to stick around in the first place. And then they moved him to the bullpen because he couldn’t succeed facing batters multiple times in a game–certainly not 3 or 4 times a game–and he finally found success. Even *he* has accepted this at this point.

Periodic struggles, or not, Heilman has found his niche as a set-up man. Everybody needs to stop trying to make him into something he is not.

The Phillies scored their run on a homer…in Petco! I thought that was illegal or something.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

I had a similar thought. I hate those freaking Padres. Why can’t they score off Moyer and the Phils’ pen AT ALL?!?!

    • Dafatone80 says:

Burrell’s like, 2 for his last 68 (okay not really, but he’s cold.)

So I bench him on my fantasy team, and what does he do? A homer! Every time I bench him, he has a big game.

Clearly, the Mets are more important than my fantasy team. Guess I should play him every day, watch him suck, and be happy?

      • MetsFan1976 says:

In all pathetic seriousness, I *never* bench Phillies players in fantasy baseball for that very reason. And when I need a spot starter, it generally is a Phillie, even though their starters (aside from Hammels) generally suck. Yesterday I used Myers. Tonight…Moyer. I often use Kendrick, too. Using Eaton was typically a bit too much to ask.

        • Dafatone80 says:

Well, their offense is normally huge. But they’re in Petco, they haven’t been hitting, and Burrell’s been cold. It was him or Milton Bradley.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

What you decided was the logical decision. I typically go with the cynical, somewhat superstitious Mets fan decision. :)

  31. Flushing_is_Burning says:

    phillies won…

  32. HangingSlider says:

So on a completely different note – i just saw that the Yankees werent able to sign Gerrit Cole, the pitcher alot of guys on this board wanted and were calling for Omar’s head on a platter when he chose Reese Havens over him instead – and took Holt with their final pick.

I remember reading something about Holt being garbage, aka the next Mike Pelfrey. Well Mike Pelfrey is turning heads and so is Holt for now

What a long long season its been.

  33. J0eSmiTh says:

yeah wow, how do they not sign cole

The Nats didnt sign their top pick Aaron Crowe either.

everyone else signed, beckham alonso hosmer alvarez posey et al

padres are a disgrace btw. cant even get 1 off Jamie Moyer

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Cole and his family decided that he was going to college no matter what–it never got to the point of the Yankees trying to win him over. At least that’s what I’ve heard.

  34. anrst says:

this team is going nowhere if we have to relie on Sanchez and Heilman in big spots… not developing or at least kicking the tires on Kunz now is a huge mistake … manuel has no clue.

  35. RodKanehl says:

“Speaking of the Pirates, I don’t what it is, but games against the Pirates in Pittsburgh always bore me. Perhaps it’s because they haven’t been relevant for 16 years.”

What a stupid babyish comment. Your team is ina pennant race and in a one run game you are bored because of whom they are playing. Grow up and learn to report on the game. You are now owned by a professional company and sponsored by a professional company. Start acting professional yourself

And by the way, the “former manager” has a name try using it., despite what you think of his managerial abilities, try using it. A little profesionalism might not hurt.

    • m00kie says:

it wasn’t matt posting, but I agree…As I alluded above, the entire recap seemed petulant and petty. Nichols must have had a rough night.

  36. bvaz says:

people do realize that Billy Wagner is on the DL, right? people do realize that bullpens do blow games, right? people do realize that as bad as that loss was on Monday, if they can get through the weekend without another blown save, they fared pretty well with their closer on the DL.

people say that this team won’t go anywhere with this bullpen. bullpens can eb streaky. before the HR last night, how many runs had the bullpen given up since Monday? how did the bullpen pitch during the 10 game winning streak?
I think some fans just like to complain and will not be happy unless they have something to complain about.

keep complaining while I enjoy the last 40 games of a pennant race.

    • gomets6091 says:

you can’t honestly tell me you have confidence in this bullpen on a nightly basis? This is the bullpen that put the Phillies in the playoffs last year, and this is the bullpen that has prevented us from opening a 5 or 6 game lead this year. Fact is, it’s not a very good bullpen. Obviously, they’re not going to blow every game, nor even half the games, but they’ve blown too many already. I’m going to enjoy this pennant race (hopefully), and I hope the starters and offense carry us to the playoffs, but it won’t be b/c of the bullpen if we get there.

    • beltran the warrior says:

did you enjoy the last 40 games of last year’s pennant race? the bullpen is worrisome. it’s that nice that heilman got the save but 3/4 is 75%, that’s a horrible save pct. sorry i have little faith in the bullpen. there is no one who you can name and you feel absolutely confident is going to shut a team down for an inning or two. there simply isn’t. the point is we’ve yet to see any consistency.

the games are dwindling down but the trend is still there. i’m sorry i’m going to continue worrying about the pen until game 162 ends and the word “mets” is at the tope of the nl east.

then i’ll worry throughout the playoffs.

      • DAK442 says:

        “3/4 is 75%, that’s a horrible save pct.”

Isn’t that Billy’s save percentage, too? Aaron’s performing at Wagner Replacement Level.

    • 911nafstem says:

Get a clue dude, this bullpen has been HORRIBLE. They have the worst ERA in the majors since the all-star break. It’s amazing how some fans just refuse to criticize their team.

      • bvaz says:

and yet the Mets are in first place.
I’m going to answer all 3 posts in one. last year sucked. but it was not only the bullpen that sucked. and last year is over. I don;t give a rat’s a** what happened last year right now. it’s mid august and it is a tight division. live for this year.

I love people’s comebacks. “get a clue.” here si my clue. why do we watch baseball? there are 40 games left and the division lead is one game. this is what it is about. if you can’t enjoy this, you can’t enjoy baseball. if that makes me clueless, then so be it.

as for the pen, wagner is back monday. like him or not, he is our best closer and better than anythign we have now. maybe burgos helps in september. maybe sanchez has enouigh to get it done in the 8th inning.

I do criticize the team. but the point is that THIS team is in 1st place. if they fail to make the postseason again this year, I will be the first one criticizing them, but while they are still in first place, I am going to enjoy watching them play.

I stand by my view. if you can;t enjoy a postseason race like this, I don’t kow why you even bother tyo watch baseball.

        • mjg283 says:

I’m confused. People who accurately point out that this bullpen (especially without Wagner) intimidates nobody can’t enjoy a pennant race? Huh??

          >>I do criticize the team. but the point is that THIS team is in 1st place. if they fail to make the postseason again this year, I will be the first one criticizing them, but while they are still in first place, I am going to enjoy watching them play.<<

In other words, you’re telling us you ignore festering problems until it’s too late to do anything about them. The time to make improvements and experiments is when you’re in first place and have margin for error (albeit 1 game here).

        • bvaz says:

how are they supposed to solve them? it would have been nice ot get marte. fuentes was going no where. arthur rhodes was not the answer. they need to play with what they got.
maybe they should have bought kunz up earlier and let him develop so that he can contribute now. what it comes down to is that sanchez lost his velocity. thatr is what is kiiling the team.
if it was july 29th, I’d be right there with you but right now, they need to play with what they got and hope they escape game sliek they did yesterday.
what I do know is that there are 27 outs in a game. they need 18 to 21 from their starter (hopefully more on some nights). when wagner comes back, hopefully he can lock down the last 3.
between the rest, they need to get on average 3 to 6 outs. right now, I don’t have much confidence in the guys we have but I also know that this is what we are stuck with. nights like last night, the defense helped out with a key out on beltrans throw. reyes made a great play in the 9tth but delgado should have made the play to start.
the goal is to get to the psotseasona nd then hopefully they get hot. right now, I think even with this bullpen, they have enough to get there. I couldn’t watch the game tuesday because I was still upset about monday. I know the holes but what it comes down to is that there are 40 games left and this is what makes sports exciting.

        • gomets6091 says:

look, I’m enjoying this pennant race a lot. I hope to continue enjoying it. But that doesn’t change the fact that this isn’t a good bullpen. It will be better when Wagner gets back, but even then, guys like Heilman and Joe Smith and Schoenweis and Sanchez and Feliciano scare the hell out of me. And Wagner’s been shaky this year too.

Your original post made it sound like everything is just peachy with the bullpen, and even if it’s not, well, that’s just the way things are b/c bullpens are streaky. Bullpen’s are streaky, that’s true, but ours is streakier than most and is bad for longer than most. If you swapped our ‘pen with the Phillies ‘pen, we’d probably have about an 8 or 9 game lead right now. That’s all I’m saying.

  37. LIMetfan74 says:

    Bore you????
We have had to sweat out these last two games. We should be blowing these teams out then it would be boring!!

  38. TobeRinkler says:

Drats! You weren’t supposed to find out about the Kunz thing!

  39. DavidDog says:

    I wanna see more kunz!
