News: Wagner’s Simulated Inning, Back to NYC
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 16, 2008 5:28 pm

Billy Wagner threw a one simulated inning on the mound today in Pittsburgh’s PNC Park.

Wagner told reporters that, while his forearm feels good, his elbow is not yet to ready to pitch on back-to-back days, meaning he may be unable to return from the disabled list, on time, as expected, on Monday.

Update6:30 pm

Wagner is being sent back to New York and will not be activated on Monday, where he may be re-examined by a doctor.

To hear from Wagner, check out SNY’s Pre-Game Show.

Frankly, I have about as much faith in Wagner in a big spot as any other member of this bullpen.

  2. Maineiac says:

    Sign K-rod

    • bvaz says:

well, last season’s top priority was an ace. depending on what happens with delgado’s option and whether they can sign ollie, the bullpen needs a lot of attention this offseason.
they don’t think kunz is ready obviously. wags seems like he will be breaking down next year so I think a closer or back up closer is a very high priority so let’s see what the market demands for krod. his innings so far in his career scare me though for a long term deal.

    • MetsFan1989 says:

u kidding me.. he is not doing as agood and is going to have arm problems soon. he is only thorwing 89-92 now. before 95.

      • Nate W. says:

And the Angels have no problem abusing him because they arent going to resign him. Bad combo…

Not sure there are other options out there. Do we want to let the Twins raid the farm again for Joe Nathan? Everyone else is basically as much a risk as Kunz or Heilman.

  3. bvaz says:

back to back days or not, I think they should activate him when he can pitch one game.
send cancel down for a week and a half until sept. 1st. I think we need whatever billy we can get right now.

  4. Tim in LA says:

Wagner every other day is better than Kunz every other week.

  5. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

willie randolph has kidnapped eddie kunz

  6. Nate W. says:

This pen could use an every other day policy anyway… Alternate Heilman and Wagner keeping them both fresh and shart.

While they are at it they could try to not use some of the other guys every single day as well…

  7. Nate W. says:

    another MRI?

Are we sure Wagner is having just one problem, or are they looking at new areas of his arm? Seems weird to need 4 or 5 MRI’s in less than two months…

  8. MetsFan4Decades says:

Heard Wagner’s comments on the pre-game. He’s not 100%, more like 80-85%, with elbow stiffness. Said right now, he’s not going to be able to go out and throw 95 mph and frankly ‘I’m not that good to be a finesse pitcher’. Said he might not be 100% rest of the year.

So….while he’ll be back eventually, time to find that back up closer.

  9. mookie says:

the good news is that a lot of teams will be focused on signing sabathia sheets, texiera, etc. I think we should put all are focus on K- rod. Do we have billy wagner signed for the next season. If so I think wagner just has to accept that he will be a great eigth inninng man.

    • Nate W. says:

yup, 10.5m next year, and a 8.0m club op w/buy out of 1.0m for 2010. Not sure if the option year vests, but it is still a huge chuck of change to be paying a ‘lefty specialist’ With Schoeneweis and Feliciano not going anywhere I think they would have to talk Wagner into waiving the no trade clause and fine someone willing to take him.

The D’Backs could use and afford a closer, right?

      • stickguy says:

don’t sount on Feliciano or Schoe being here next year.

Regardless of how 2008 ends up, I expect the BP to be hugely renovated for next year. And those guys may not be back.

    • Frankly, I don’t think Wagner will mind that much if he has to share closing duties with someone or take a back seat entirely. In 2006, he told Willie and Rick to give Bell some closing opportunities, I think to give himself a break. They didn’t listen to him. He realizes he can’t be a fulltime closer anymore. Question is, do the Mets realize it?

I agree they should go after K-Rod. And have a backup plan if he signs elsewhere. They need a closer bad, and to reinforce their bullpen. What happened to Santana this year can’t happen in the future.

Forget about Teixeira. Forget about Delgado too. He’s too risky. Just concentrate on Ollie (or a replacement for him) and a closer.

  10. stickguy says:

They might just have to break down and let Kunz have a shot at pitching a few innings. Att least as a set up guy.

Hopefully they can hold together until 9/1, then activae every live arm they can. Wagner on restricted duty with expanded rosters would be OK, but this is starting to sound like something serious, as in out for the year and frankly it wouldn’t surprise me if he needs surgery at some point.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I agree with let’s see what Kunz can do, and the expanded roster better included several arms for that BP……

  11. LIMetfan74 says:

Yep thats the sound of the other shoe falling.

  12. mookie says:

How about bringing up Holt from doubel AA ball. Not as a closer, but as a one inning pitcher. He has a wicked fastball, and if developes that curve ball a bitt to keep hitters honest he might be able to work an inning here and there.

  13. 911nafstem says:

Make Heilman the closer, he’s historically responded well when given more responsibility. Yes, it scares the crap out of me, but I think he’d be the best choice.

    • das2ble says:

      lmao……..that was hysterical

    • Giuseppe Franco for GM says:

Heilman as a closer?? Seriously??? Two reliable pitches and the propensity to walk batters combined with the long balls he gives up???? That pucker puss and far away look he gets drive me crazy. He does, however, back up 3rd and home plate very well–back-pedaling into position after releasing a pitch almost seems like part of his delivery.

    • ridethesnake says:

I opt for a closer that does not scare the crap out of me, thanks.

  14. khmustache says:

    pregame?

  15. das2ble says:

    The Kiss of Death:

“… being sent back to New York and will not be activated on Monday, where he may see a re-examined by a doctor.”

How many times have we heard that this season?

  16. mikeyrad says:

Kunz still seems to be afraid to throw strikes. He may not be ready.

  17. bkfitz says:

Elbow problems are VERY bad. It could mean TJ which. Considering Wagner’s age, it’d be the end for him at least as a closer.
