Buzz: Aubrey Huff free to be Traded
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 18, 2008 10:00 am

For those who still think the Mets should acquire an outfielder, know that, according to the Baltimore Sun, OF Aubrey Huff has cleared revocable ‘trade’ waivers, meaning he can be traded to any team at any time.

Huff is hitting .300 with 25 HR in 117 games for the Orioles this season.

Huff will earn $8 million next season, after which he is eligible to be a free agent.

    wow.

  2. Peter says:

Holy crap . . . he could be a nice addition.

    • napes22 says:

Only if Church is done for the year. Otherwise, why do we need him?

Only thing I could see is using him to replace Delgado, as Huff did play some 1B in Tampa.

      • returnoftheewm says:

Why do need him? He’s a proven hitter… why don’t we need him?

He can spell Delgado, and is great insurance for when Murphy comes back down to earth, and given Church has played in only 57 games this season.. this is a friggen blessing.

        Go get this guy!

  3. jamie says:

well, if church doesn’t make it back…

  4. ksuth says:

Doesn’t this mean that the Mets already passed up picking him up if he has cleared waivers?

  5. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

Wow.. he would be great….still going to take a good player to get him though

  6. beltran the warrior says:

andy mcphail is not going to let this guy go for anything less than prospects who can replace him next year. look how he fleeced the mariners on bedard and how he gave the cubs the hand for brian roberts in the offseason.

    doubtful huff is a met.

    • ravi3 says:

hmm ya never know…I’m sure they would mind clearing the payroll either…

      • ravi3 says:

        *wouldn’t mind

      • beltran the warrior says:

that didn’t stop him from holding out for top dollar on brian roberts or eric bedard. not saying it’s impossible but just looking at how he handled chicago should be a strong indicator of how he will handle the potential trade of aubrey huff

        • therealsince86 says:

Don’t you think that those guys are a little different than an aging veteran with an expensive contract for this season and next? The would save over 10 million. The only reason they would keep him is for the picks so if they can get them now AND save money they would do it. Besides they are going to need all the money they can get to go after Tex like it has been rumored.

        • beltran the warrior says:

i don’t think it’s different at all. he knew he would need to unload roberts but wouldn’t take junk back from chicago. he didn’t like who they were offering so he figured he’ll keep roberts for a better deal or take the picks.

same with bedard all while knowing how much bedard wanted to leave and already stated he would leave as a free agent. he found a sucker in bill bavasi and gave him a bounty for an overrated bum.

what gives any indication he’s going to act different with aubrey huff? what’s to stop him from simply going for the picks if he doesn’t get HIS deal?

        • therealsince86 says:

The 10 million dollars needed for Tex. Bedard and Roberts are CHEAP. They would net more players because they are under team control and young(er). Do you honestly think that he can get more than what the value of 2 draft picks would be for him? His value is more right now with another year on his contract in a pennant race than it will be in the offseason.
I think right now he could get a top pitching prospect, in the fall he may not get anything more than the 2 net of 2 picks/

  7. Depends on the asking price. He would be a very nice addition to the lineup, especially if Church comes back. Could you imagine a lineup in September of: Reyes, Beltran, Wright, Delgado, Church, Huff, Castro/Easley, Schneider/Castillo?

    Would be pretty darn good.

  8. Jaded1983 says:

I doubt he will become a met either. on the one hand he’d be a great addition and would make for a great OF with Beltran and a healthy Church/Tatis. on the other i want to continue seeing Evans and Murphy do their thing out there.

tough call to make if the opportunity presented itself

  9. Prismo says:

I *really* wish we knew if Church is coming back or not. It makes all the difference in the world.

  10. patrick says:

I would like to clarify, I am not exactly advocating adding him, I am shocked that he cleared waivers, I could see Tampa Bay considering adding him.

    • McPhail would want David Price and then some, since they reside in the same division, and the Rays know this, so why would they bother even making a claim on Huff?

      • MetLifer says:

They make claims to block other teams from getting them even if they don’t want them.. Say the Yanks or the Sox..

  11. Obviously, and as other have said, he would be a nice addition to the lineup, but at what cost? McPhail is tough to deal with.

    Don’t expect this to happen.

  12. Jaded1983 says:

would the phillies or the fish take a stab at him?

  13. Peter says:

It looks like he played most of his games at first. Would Carp get it done?

  14. grotesmask says:

Trade Evans, Heilman, Castillo, Schoenweiss, Muniz, Cancel, etc. and get him.

  15. randytate says:

Mets Magic number down to 39!

  16. nysportsfan16 says:

I say go out and get him

  17. nysportsfan16 says:

I believe he plays first as well, so he could start there next year while giving Carp or someone else more time to develop

  18. Big Lou says:

Does anyone remember the O’s don’t wanna deal with us because they feel they got fleeced with the Maine trade?

  19. GravediggerHebner says:

He’s a very productive hitter, that I cannot argue, but for this post to call him “OF Aubrey Huff” is kind of funny, it should really read “DH/1B Aubrey Huff.”

    • therealsince86 says:

Eh, he can play a little OF. Did in 06 and was a RF, not a left. He can also play a little 3B. He would be a LH version of Tatis. Remember if you get him now we can still have Evans and Murphy up Setember 1. Then you can spend all of September figuring out your playoff roster.

Delgado Castillo Reyes Wright Schnider Huff Beltran Tatis

      Easley Murphy Castro Endy

Wagner, Sanchez, Feliciano, Ayala, Show, Heilman, Stokes
      Johan, Maine, Perez, Pedro, Pelfrey

      • GravediggerHebner says:

He’s mediocre at 3B and rotten in the OF though, he has a .953 fielding percentage at 3B this season which would place him 18th in the majors if he qualified, and his last season in the OF, 2006, had the exact same percentage in RF.

        • therealsince86 says:

Who cares about his overall stats at 3B? Can he give Wright a day off? As for his numbers in RF, would he be worse than Tatis?

        • GravediggerHebner says:

I stand by and feel that I have appropriately backed up my original point that calling him “OF Aubrey Huff” is laughable.

Can he give Wright a day off? Sure. Is that a reason to acquire someone?

Would Huff be worse than Tatis in RF, or worse than Murphy in left, because that is really who he’d be replacing, not Tatis? Possibly. Is that a reason to acquire someone?

        • therealsince86 says:

Fair enough but I think there is room for Huff and Murphy on the team. Who is our LHPH on the bench? Endy Chavez? Having Tatis, Murphy, Huff and Easley being on the team gives it a lot of options on offense for sure.

      • Tidewater says:

Your ability to list simply amazes.

        • therealsince86 says:

Thanks, I thought you might like it. I really care what you think and took time from my job to accomodate you.

        • Tidewater says:

I appreciate it. But please, don’t get behind at work on my account.

      • JohnGreatOneNJ says:

Uh, hello. Did you just say:
“Then you can spend all of September figuring out your playoff roster.’

Can we have more than a, oh say, 2 game lead w/ about 40 to play before we start thinking like this?

God forbid they lose a lead to the Pirates in a few hours because the bullpen chokes again, and you’ll be screaming like the world is ending.

Go with your young guys, forget Huff. I agree that he’s a good hitter, but lets try to win it with our pitching, and see what you have in Murphy and Evans. We will need a corner OF next year. If they show they’re worth anything, added to F-Mart, suddenly you have depth, and maybe even a trade chip. We still have “ultra 4th OF Endy Chavez” as well…

        • therealsince86 says:

Yes you can figure that out in a pennant race because these guys are still going to need breaks. Also, you need to figure out who is good in PH situations, etc. So yes you can do both.

  20. The Slider says:

Other teams may not be willing to take on Huff’s contract. And the Orioles, if really in rebuilding mode, may be just looking to shed money.

I’m sure we can come up with a decent package, but you guys would have to reconsider your collective infatuation with guys like Mike Carp or, dare I say it, Danny Murphy (who I love!). Fact is, is that you win with veterans.

I would strongly consider making deal for Huff.

    • rogasm says:

      It’s Daniel, not Danny.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I would say you win with a majority of veterans yes, but the 2007 Red Sox with Pedroia, Ellsbury, Okajima, Lester, Delcarmen and Matsuzaka show that some young players can contribute too.

      • The Slider says:

Oh, no doubt. And, as I said above, I love DANIEL Murphy. But who would you prefer to be staring in left field in the WS – Murphy or Huff. I’m not saying that DANIEL can’t help us, but if we can get Huff for a reasonable price, I say we do it.

  21. Justin4383 says:

I am amazed no one would claim him, hes having a great year and would help every club.

I would love to see him here but don’t think we can make a trade with baltimore unless tey are apt to take back something along the lines of Evans, Carp, Heilman, and Muniz

    • therealsince86 says:

It would most likely be Niese and others NOT on the 40 man. Most of those players you mentioned would not clear.

    • kistics says:

Even though Heilman has been shaky and flat out scary at times, I think he still is an essential part of the Mets bullpen. Unless the Mets get someone to replace him or someone step up and be reliable, he’s not going to be traded.

  22. SuicideWatch says:

Another lefty bat……remember the days when the Mets couldn’t find a lefty bat to save their lives (or season)??

    • therealsince86 says:

Well really at this point with no Church what LH do we have? Especially on the bench? Endy?

      • The Slider says:

None. And what happens if Church has a recurrence of symptoms and has to be shut down?

  23. kistics says:

It looks like Duaner and Shoe cleared the waivers too

    • therealsince86 says:

Yes they did last week. No one wanted Shows salary and evidently were affraid of Sanchez.

      • kistics says:

I’m not sure what this means for Mets’ trading activity, but at least they have some chips to work with.. maybe..

        • therealsince86 says:

True but at this point could you afford to trade them for anything else but another bullpen arm? And would that new arm be any better than they are?

  24. Andrew says:

Definitely gotta go get Huff if the price is right (Carp + Evans, or maybe a pitcher like Collazo?).

  25. F-Tatis17 says:

eh i don’t think the mets need him

  26. christian warrior says:

    Umm…

He isn’t on his way to Shea yet why?

  27. cdinero says:

wow, oddly enuff i had a dream last week the mets got audbrey huff…hopefully i’m clairvoyant (in addition to being odd for having met dreams)
