View: Citi Field Scoreboard, Shea in Space
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 18, 2008 10:45 am

According to the Daily News, “Months after a (Yankees fan) astronaut carried some dirt from Yankee Stadium into orbit, a Mets fan has upped the ante and will take a home plate from Shea into space this October.”

Speaking of stadiums, to check out images of Citi Field, click here and here.

The home plate he took was apparently from the 2007 season, which I guess means it is relatively clean and free of Met cleatmarks.

It will be interesting to see the effect of space radiation on Paul Lo Duca’s DNA.

    • ravi3 says:

Yes, and it is also cursed with by the collapse…

Meanwhile, Ryan Howard is doing an espn chat this afternoon…I’m not suggesting heckling him, but I’m not saying don’t do it…

Did you see that nice corporate private boxes above field level? Makes me think of Arthur Ashe stadium and how the corporatation get all the love and the average fan get the raw deal.

I have mezzanine box seats with a great home plate view at Shea. I will not be happy if I am pushed farther from the field just to accommodate a few levels of corporate boxes.

Who is ready to get mad?! I think I am.

  2. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

Ha ha, Yankee Universe my @#!$.

  3. Ceetar says:

Our relief pitchers have enough trouble finding it at Shea..

I was in town last week and saw the new scoreboard. From the outside, the Citi Field logo is really hard to read. I’m surprised that’s the way it was done. They should put something behind it so it is more legible.

  5. Deadpanwalking says:

Man, I hope this stadium leads somebody to do something about the neighborhood around Shae. It needs something … bars, restaurants, maybe a boardwalk. There’s absolutely nothing to do after the games right now but high-tail it back into civilization.

    OFF TOPIC DISCUSSION
Do you think the Mets make a big effort to resign Ollie after the season? If not, who do you go after in FA?

    • I think they better sign him. They aren’t signing CC. Sheets is a gamble, which I wouldn’t want to take. Let’s see what Pedro does down teh stretch here. He may be signed with Ollie.

    • ravi3 says:

They almost have to, particularly the way he is pitching no? We have seen first hand how important solid starting pitching is, during both of our winning streaks. In addition, the guy simply dominates the Mets immediate competition, and with his big game nature, you can’t take that too lightly.

The kid is a 26yr old flame throwing lefty. His delivery doesn’t seem to be one that can lead to injury, and the guy has never been on the DL (Not entirely sure, but about 90%). If Pelfrey continues to develop, we have a solid 1-3 at the top. The Braves proved how valuable that can be.

With Ollie in the fold, along with Santana, Maine, and Pelfrey, the Mets have a fantastic core of young (youngish with Santana) of starting pitching, which compliments the core of Wright/Reyes/Beltran very well.

WE have seen that it is nearly impossible to acquire a talent like Ollie’s on the trade market, and v ery rarely do these types make it to free agency. Omar must strike this offseason and bring in Perez. I think he priority number one.

      • ksuth says:

Oh, I completely agree, I just wanted to get a sense of what people around here thought. Remember at the beginning of the season people were saying we should deal him and such…

I think our priorities this off season are

        1. Resigning Ollie
        2. Relief Pitching
        3. Corner Outfield

      • Jaded1983 says:

I agree, signing Perez should be priority #1. He has been pitching very well of late and is starting to go deeper into games. Yes we need bullpen help, but we all know that the best way to use a bullpen is to not use them (aka effective starting pitching)

plus i am going to call it right now, you heard it metsblog, aaron heilman will bounce back next year and have an ERA between 3.39 and 3.55

        Lets go Mets!

  7. DAG says:

Great as it looks, is anyone else thinking that Citi Field may play a lot like Petco Park in San Diego?

  8. Blue_n_Orange says:

I have this picture in my head of the bad guys from Superman II floating through space trapped in an album cover. Except in this instance it’s the entire ‘07 team crammed into the plate.

  9. nsr says:

the wilpons are trying to buy out all of the auto shops across from the stadium and make the area into a fun place with bars and stores like in the bronx around yankee stadium

    • Ceetar says:

Not like Yankee Stadium..that’s not exactly a nice place. The plans around Shea look much better than anything you see in the Bronx.

      • nsr says:

i know im just saying that in response to deadpanwalking that its not going to be a dumb around the stadium. there are going to be things to do after and before

    • janss36 says:

The Wilpoins are not buying them out at all… The City is trying to buy out as many as they can… There is a HUGE argument right now over the City potentially seizing the chop shops via Eminent Domain…

      • GeorgeThomas says:

Ultimately the chop shops will be gone and there will be a beautiful new neighborhood with condos, restaurats, bars, parks…

Probably not in time for opening day next year (4/14/09) but eventually.

      • debbiemet says:

“buying them out” is not the same as “eminent domain.”
The latter, in this case, meaning seizing the businesses w/o fair or just compensation from hard working people who have tried to make their livelihood here for many, many years; businesses whose normal municipal services needs were ignored by this city (they pay the same taxes as the rest of us.)

But don’t worry all you happy little Mets fans looking for “somebody to do something about the neighborhood around Shea. “(you mean CITIFIELD, my friend) Mr. Bloomberg and his City Council will get rid of these guys and build your fancy bars, restaurants and playgrounds well before you can say “Play Ball” in 2009!

    • I would say those bars around Yankee stadium have character or whatever. I would not say the bars and stores are fun.

On a lighter note, John Sterling went into his home run call yesterday on what he thought was a Nady home run (my excuse: I was in my buddy’s car and he is a big Yanks fan) He even went into his obnoxious call afterwards. You know, “Giambino”, “Alexander the Great”. Except for Nady, he says “X markes the spot”. Pretty clever, except for the fact that Nady was on deck and the guy that hit the home run was pinch hitting for someone else. Fire Sterling.

  10. janss36 says:

From people who went by this weekend, apparently there were some graphics up on the video boards… Testing, testing…

  11. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

I’d hope for something a little nicer than River Ave. Don’t get me wrong, I like being able to fill up on slightly less than ballpark priced beer as much as the next guy, but those bars are a dump.

I’m surprised that the city never tried to invoke imminent domain on the chop shops in the neighborhood when they decided to build a new tennis center.

I know Rudy G. really fawned over the US Open, claiming that it was the 2nd most lucrative sporting event in the 5 boroughs after the Yankees. I know the tennis center has a lot of things inside the complex itself, but think of the knock-off merchandise kick backs the city is missing without more of a main strip on Roosevelt.

  12. jamie says:

are those pipes for field drainage/sewage? they’re gigantic

  13. BIG17EASY says:

Didn’t Kevin Burkhardt interview the astronaut in Houston a couple weeks ago? This is old news.

  14. SoDakMets says:

The scoreboard(s) that CitiField will be using are from Daktronics, Inc. It is located in South Dakota. Actually, it is in the same town in which I live. They provide display systems to a majority of the MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA. In addition they are subcontracted to provide the displays for the Olympics. They are also the company that has built and designed a great many of the Times Square signs including the large Coca-Cola one.

    • SoDakMets says:

I actually used to work there while going to college. We also built the scoreboards that they use in Philadelphia. It was everythign that I could do to not take a hammer to their displays.

If you go to the Daktronics website you can see all the o
