Read: Chipper Will Miss Shea
By Regis Courtemanche - Aug 19, 2008 4:12 pm

In an article for the New York Times, Ray Glier interviews Chipper Jones on how he feels about the destruction of his “home away from home”, Shea Stadium.

Chipper, as quoted by Glier:

“I always thought it was a good hitter’s background there, a park that kind of plays to my strengths. Obviously, having to deal with the Mets year in and year out, all those games that were so important, the history of the love-hate relationship, the passion of their fans, it makes it special to go there.”

“I might be the only one that is sad to see the place go.”

It’s hard to tell whether or not Larry is “sad” because he likes the park, or just likes hitting there. Chances are it’s the latter.

As much as I respect Chipper, I can’t help but cringe anytime I see his name, anytime, anywhere.

The Mets should invite Chipper over when they blow the place up. He could even be the guest of honor, right in the middle of everything when they push the plunger down.

  2. Tidewater says:

What you have to respect about Chipper, too, is that he gets it. He gets the heat of the Mets-Braves rivalry. He gets that he is a hated figure here, and kind of admires the fans for being so vicious and vociferous.

I hate Chipper Jones. But I like him too.

I hate Chipper Jones, and then I hate him some more.

It’s more of a hate with respect thing. A lot of other rivals garner hate and despise. I’ll mention no names, but initials that come to mind are Rollins….

      • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

for me, a lifetime of hating chipper was sealed during the last series of ‘98. HATE!

      • Tidewater says:

That’s it, you hate him because he kills us, and does so with a smile. But the man helped make the rivalry what it was. (Frustrating too, but that’s part of the game.)

        • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

can’t you just let me have my wildly irrational rant in peace?
          ;-)

Of course. I’m sorry. I did the same thing about the bullpen last week. Carry on!

  3. Nightlife says:

Cheer up Larry! Who knows, they might even put a Hooters in Shea’s place.

  4. Hating chipper jones is written into the met fan’s constitution. But He is a great player

It would be nice to take it to this depleted Braves team. Along with the San Diego sweep, the Braves sweeping us 4 games was one of the lowest points in the season (plus that is where we lost Church). Time to get a little payback–I just hope our players treat it as such.

  9. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

So Schneider hits 50% of his HR total for the season last week and he rides the pine? Just kidding, I know it’s a lefty. But I read somewhere that they were considering giving Delgado a breather and playing Evans at 1B. I still think you could put Murphy in the lineup. He might not have that much experience against LHP, but he can hit to all fields.

As for Chipper it’s easier to treat him with a bit of nostalgia since the Braves teams that tormented us throughout the mid 90’s through mid 00’s are essentially dead. I think if he was still hitting backbreaking doubles in games that decided the division between us and the Bravos the “Larry” chants would be as loud as ever.

    • maybealittlemoredelgado says:

i wish they’d flip easley and castro in the batting order. i think gary brought this up on the broadcast yesterday, but we should be trying to get castro better pitches to hit since he can crush the ball.

say what you will about Larry, the reason you hate him is that he delivered time and again in the biggest spots when the two teams were battling it out from 1997 through 2001.

Unlike a lot of players from his generation, while I might not like him, I have the utmost respect for his game.

    • 911nafstem says:

I’d rather have a good player like Jones play well against the Mets than some clown like Pat Burrell.

  11. bkfitz says:

    Question to everyone.

If you knew Chipper would retire at the end of the season, would you give Chipper a standing ovation in his last AB here in NY?

  12. naps920 says:

I’d seriously lead the standing O at his last game at Shea. I’ve loved to hate him and he’s earned my respect by playing the game the right way.

I just would never let him know that until the last possible second at Shea Stadium. And…it’d be followed by a Larry chant if he acknowledged the stading O.

    • sincekindergarten says:

And, he’d probably laugh . . . then do his damndest to hit one out. And if he did, I’d want to high-five the guy, because he played the game the right way.

Another question for us–if he said, “I’d like to play my last year as a Met,” how many of you would want him? I think that his presence on the bench alone would inspire Reyes to play with a maturity that would stun us (not having temper tantrums). Also, I think that David Wright would welcome him–then ask him to take a 1B glove.
